Transcript: “No one ever talks about how difficult it is to be an AAC user. It is exhausting.”
People don’t realise what a huge amount of cognitive energy it requires to use AAC, to think about which words you want, where they’re located, if you have the correct version of the word (e.g I have the word “given” but not “giver”) and there’s a never-ending tension in the back of your mind telling you to hurry up because the other person is waiting for you.
One of the flaws about Proloquo2Go that I hate, is that it can’t handle long sentences. If I try to write something that it decides is too long, it freezes and crashes, and when I reboot it, what I was writing is gone for good.
I had a meltdown this morning because I was putting so much effort into describing the processing speed test I took during my IQ assessment, which was part of my autism evaluation. I had been writing for at least five minutes, and could physically feel the fatigue clouding my brain, then right when I was near the end, the app froze, crashed, and deleted all my hard work. I was livid and exploded. My keyguard does a good job of protecting my screen from blows when I slam my open palm into it repeatedly out of frustration.
Fortunately it was my care staff who I was describing the test to, so she was able to do my deep pressure hold and help me calm down. Communicating shouldn’t have to be this hard.

hi friends I finally have a folder for describing words ( adjectives and adverbs ) that works for me! I do not do well with all the folders Proloquo 2 go comes with. so i took everything out of the folders it came with on this page, and put all the words on one main page that scrolls, which is my first one that does that. if I like it I might make my verb page like this too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
image description : the adjectives folder in proloquo2go 8x14 grid, that is 2 pages vertically, and grouped by topic / similar words, and each group colored. The top 3 rows are template core words and the rest of the 2 images is describing words. for example, the words: little medium big small regular and large, buttons are together and light green. there is folders for colors, shapes, and abstract words. other words on the page include: new, important, clean, wet damp, alive, sweet , wonderful, awful, busy, almost, full, enough, cold, warm, slow , tall, thick, flat, poor, weak, strong, part , first , bright, clear, quiet, harsh, plain, messy, sharp , smelly, fuzzy, open, yummy, nasty, sour, spoiled, fresh, fizzy, crunchy, salty. and many more. End ID.

Kiku's tics are acting up bad right now, have been since yesterday (Kiku just realized this means Kiku is getting better from being sick. Kiku tics less when sick for some reason) and don't know why. Even had a rage attack yesterday. Body is almost allover preminatory urge feeling. Is terrible.
But Kiku is working on a custom pageset in TD Snap inspired by Proloquo and a bit by Proloquo2go and the other apps we use. It's a 5 by 7 grid and high contrast. We made it for when larger grid sizes aren't working and it's going well.
We are also using it to add things to other apps. Our AAC often influences each other.
We have also been working on recording audio onto buttons for stimming and communication. We've been realizing just how much we rely on echolalia and adding buttons with recorded sounds helps.

Was curious how much AAC apps costed so I searched on apple store for proloquo2go, thinking it would be maybe $30-$50? Oh boy was i wrong
FIVE HUNDRED DOLLARS ($500) !!!! For an APP that is NECESSARY to SPEAK
They clearly know theyre the most popular out there and therefore can get away with that price since people have no other choice......
What the actual fuck
Nonverbal and semiverbal people I am so sorry that this app costs so much and your ability to speak is locked behind a paywall. It is so bullshit.
I therefore ask, is there anything one can do (without money unfortunately) to support you and make it easier for you to have access to speech?

Our AAC app, SymboTalk, has once again deleted all of the images including off the cloud save... I'm getting a tablet soon, what AAC apps are there for iPad? Ideally I want Proloquo2go, but I really can't pay that much for it. unless someone has a crack of it or there's some way to piggyback someone else's copy...

Today I edit my Proloquo2go AAC for the first time in a while. It is fun! There is a lot of small improvements I make to try and make it better for my brain.
I haven't used AAC at all for a long-ish period of time. It stopped "clicking" with my brain, stopped working to help very much. Sometimes I have to change things to make it so my brain processes individual buttons rather than just whole pages blur together and process as big "chunk". (Sometimes this is only visual processing issue, sometimes more, I'm not sure 🤷🏻‍♂️).
I hope with combination of new edits and Scottish boy voice now available, I can use AAC again to communicate. I always feel stuck and frustrated and exhausted from relying so much on typing for (more) complex communicate. Basic BSL (British Sign Language) is what I use for day-to-day basic wants/needs and simple interaction. But I have so many more things inside my head that I can't usually get out!
AAC helps by giving a prompt with buttons and symbols to help my brain connect meanings and not having to rely only on fragments of memorised scripts and my "blueprints" for grammar/sentence structure. There is so much steps to go through to get anything out in writing words. It makes a HUGE delay in communicating anything - it takes sometimes months to even make a start on putting a single thought into words, and from that starting point there is so much more work to improve and get more specific and more details and explain in order in a way that makes sense to other people.
Sometimes with AAC I just use to look only at symbols and not labels on the buttons, I just press symbols that seem to connect to the abstract meaning of what I think at that moment. It is always jumbled words in random order, some of them not even relate to the original thought, but that can give a start to making my brain realise what words maybe connect to express it.
I hope this new editing can help to get things out a bit faster. Hope it is worth it because I hyperfocus on it and now tired!!

"In this video, I want to show you what the pre-programmed board for Proloquo2go looks like. I do not like it because so many of the words take so many button presses to access. Many have four or five, some even have six. This is a very inefficient way to organise things."
"Pigtails"
"Slinky"
"Skateboard"
"Worried"
"My board never has more than four presses to get to any specific button, except if I need specific tenses or conjugation."

"Presses"
"I wonder if the proloquo company, called Assistive Ware, had any real AAC users look over their work before publishing it. I do not think so."

Before I didn’t really like Proloquo2go. There was a huge learning curve and finding each word that was in folders and wasn’t on the home page was horrible. Now, as someone who’s been using Proloquo2go for about 2-3 months, I can confidently say that it is one of the best AAC apps that I’ve tried. I’ve tried many aac apps and I think all of them have their benefits and they’re all great! However nothing for me has compared to the level of customization and just being easy for my brain then Proloquo2go.
Sometimes I do struggle with it, and sometimes yes, I hate it because it can be overwhelming. But overall, I enjoy it and recommend it if you can afford it.

Almost 5 years now since nonverbal/nonspeaking…and its gotten to the point where my internal monologue and thoughts are so loud in my head that it almost tricks me into thinking I’ve just spoken for the first time in years so I dart my eyes over to my caregiver only to realize its painfully obvious she didn’t even hear or turn around to see that I had spoken since it was all in my head…hyperphantasia has insanely amplified the internal voice in my own head that my thoughts are almost indistinguishable from me physically audibly hearing it. The thing is…I hear my internal voice as my Scott teenage AAC voice on Proloquo2Go.
TLDR: please please people stop saying you wish you were actually nonverbal…you don’t you really don’t…if you like hearing the butter soft sound of your voice out loud you will miss it. I guarantee it.
Sincerely, and actually fully nonverbal autistic
