Unironically, thank you for reaching directly into my brain b/c I will never climb out of this hole apparently.

my favorite female character — Nihuang, Nihuang, Nihuang. This show is full of delightful complicated ladies (Consort Jing is fucking fascinating and I could write whole essays on how she works ingeniously in her extremely constrained circumstances to change the fate of the empire), but Mu Nihuang hits my thing for warrior ladies and my thing for tragic love that endures but is not enough, and Liu Tao has the kind of face that writes poems for the camera when you just point it at her. She is strong and tender and temperamental and multifaceted and yeah, have you considered that sometimes the woman is the blorbo.

my favorite male character — Okay, Mei Changsu is my problematic fave but also protect Xiao Jingyan at all costs. This is a harder question because I love both of them, and there's also Yan Yujin and Marquis Yan, the unconquerable father-son conspiracy duo we did not deserve but got anyway, and also Meng Zhi, without whom we would all be even more lost and confused amid all the Schemes. But I am going to say Jingyan, because he's such a Type for me (the repressed yet short-fused Lawful Good character who sticks to his morals but also has to grow beyond his narrow views), and also a Type flawlessly executed in both writing and acting. He suffers beautifully but also I don't want him to.

my favorite book/season/etc — Plot arc, maybe? This is everyone's answer but the Spring Hunt arc is gorgeous and has everything. Nihuang returns! Consort Jing is flawless! There's Strategy and Plotting and Desperate Last Stances! (Everyone gaslights Jingyan to a mildly disturbing degree...) I have too many favourite moments to count, though.

my favorite episode (if its a tv show) — I admit a great fondness for that part where Mei Changsu and Jingyan wait for the rescue team for Wei Zheng to get back. It's functionally just two guys in a room waiting for news, but the incredible tension strung between them and the fact that they're both helpless and can do nothing but wait for time to pass as other people's actions decide their fate make it riveting to me. They are generally characters who always have ways and means, but there, they're at the mercy of time. Together. Something something this scene is the show in a microcosm.

my favorite cast member — Honestly I don't know enough about the actors to say, but they all seem like they had a great time filming the series.

my favorite ship — As anyone with eyes can see, jingsuhuang is where I plant my flag, but I am pretty much a multishipper. The OT3 compels me because both Jingyan and Nihuang have such amazing chemistry with MCS and also because I feel like either of them alone runs the risk of being almost... overwhelmed by his sense of purpose and his stubborn self-denial. It balances better with three. Plus, as a friend perfectly put it, two of them is great but what about the spice (narrative, not merely erotic)? Eh. I could write a novel. I also enjoy Mu Nihuang x Xia Dong, Mei Changsu x Lin Chen, Yan Yujin x Xiao Jingrui (x Gong Yu), and pretty much anything if the writer has put a compelling spin on it. My shipping philosophy in this fandom is that I'll try anything once, and twice if I like it.

a character I’d die defending — Obviously, Consort Jing, but also, protect Xiao Jingyan at all costs. He has, after all, never done anything wrong in his life.

a character I just can’t sympathize with — I don't think there are any in NiF? Many of them do horrible things but the show generally always lets me understand why. Even its villains are written as people. (That said, Xia Jiang is the worst, and the Emperor reaches similar depths of infamy before the end for me.)

a character I grew to love — Lin Chen crept up on me! I think it was the 40-episode absence after the dramatic introduction in ep. 1 that made me feel like he was stealing scenes and intimacy from characters I had spent 40 episodes watching (while they failed in various ways to get close to Mei Changsu). He is also, ah, the kind of comedic that doesn't usually works for me. But rewatching a little, reading some fic, and thinking about it further, he's a vital part of the story and someone that Mei Changsu sorely needs, i.e. a friend he made after the Meiling massacre, who won't always reflect him against the image of Lin Shu but cares for him as he is now.

my anti otp — IDK? There are various awful men in this show that the women around them Do Not Deserve. Poor, poor Consort Jing, working herself into the Emperor's favour. So maybe it's just that some of the canon marriages are really sort of terrible.

Hey @lindonwald I wanted to add a little something to your ot3 Idea and I've come up with this👀 :

Bulgaria and Greece are roommates (omg they were roommates :o), trying to survive college life and one day Greece found kitty Romania on the streets, unknown to him that he's a.... (human, vampire, shape-shifting fantasy thing, idk). He takes the kitten home despite the landlord having a no pet policy to their apartment.

It took some convincing and some belly rubs from the kitten for the Bulgarian to agree to keep the kitten, secretly, at least till they menage a new apartment. Only 3 months has passed and the cat is all grown and healthy, now living in a better home with his owners.

Bul decided to take a trip to Romania since they've been doing a lot better financially to afford a little trip for a week. Which even now still surprises him, because just 3 months ago it felt like him and Greece were stuck in time, too many assignments to finish, too little free time, not finding manageable jobs and having to tolerate an irritable landlord who had a poorly kept apartment to offer, the only one they could afford at the time.

It may sound ridiculous but it felt like ever since they got that cat their luck has been turned around, gotta thank Greece for his obsession with cats if that was the case, cause the bulgarian sure was happy with what they accomplished so far. Just as he was looking for places to visit he saw a funny add from the romanian site, "Did you know that cats are able to ward off bad spirits and unfortunate?"

"Is that another one of those romanian folk sayings?" He wondered and it sounded quite funny at first. But as he keept reading "if a cat suddenly brings happiness to your life there is a chance that it came with a mission. To protect you, as there's gonna be something in your future that could threaten your life, something out of your control, so tell your prayers in case tomorrow may be your last day. Be sure to keep your cat by your side at all costs if you wish that not to be. Meanwhile you can visit our website to find out who can be your future husband and mo-"

He just closed the add by that point, the bulgarian wasn't the one to believe in superstitions such as these, but the coincidence of it... the fact that he was just thinking about it, and what the add said gave him a shiver down his spine. He glanced at the cat who he thought was taking a nap on the couch only to find him staring back to his eyes pretty focused, as if he was listening to what his owner just read.

"You're being creepy, stop staring" the bulgarian ordered, the cat decided to go to the kitchen then with his tail between his legs. Not a good sign. A sigh can be heard as the man lays his back down on the couch. "And I was in such a good mood today" he said to himself before closing the laptop.

do I like them: absolutely!! I love her.

5 good qualities:

Loyal as hell!!! If she's on your side she will fight tooth and nail for you.

She's determined and will stop at nothing to keep Ling, and with him, her people, safe.

She's smart!! The arm trick to lead Bradley away so she and Ling can escape is a brilliant move thought up on the fly while injured and running for her life. She had to put the pieces of that plan together FAST and she did, and once she thought of it, she didn't even hesitate to follow through. (Goes back up to points 1 and 2.)

Though she doesn’t try to be, sometimes she’s kind of silly. It’s very endearing. Despite how mature she acts she is still A Teenager - and a teenager facing things she’s probably never faced before in a country she doesn’t understand, at that.

Her fighting skills are top notch!! We all know this, of course, but she’s so impressive when she fights.

3 bad qualities:

Lan Fan clearly sees her own life and wellbeing as unimportant and that's not a good thing. The arm plan is smart but it also comes at the cost of HER ARM and could have cost her her life as well. She also clearly rushes through automail surgery and recovery in order to get back to protecting Ling as quickly as she can, which probably did more harm than good and also could easily lead to later complications. Lan Fan's determination is admirable, but it also hurts her.

She's so stubborn!! This is the flip side to her being very determined, because once she gets an idea in her head she will not let it go and won’t stop to consider other possibilities.

This isn’t a bad quality really, I just wish she got to be a kid more. She clearly has so much expectation and responsibility weighing her down.

favourite episode/etc: When she cuts her arm off to trick Bradley!! Holy cow!! That part really sucker punched me the first time I read it. Also, when she returns to fight Gluttony!! Truly one of the greatest entrances ever.

otp: I like her with Ling fine, but I can also read their dynamic as completely platonic.

brotp: Ling. Also, I think she and Ed would be great friends even if they act like they hate each other. They’re incredibly similar, and I like to think they bond over both automail AND the feeling of having so much responsibility to protect someone that you are willing to push yourself too hard and sacrifice too much after everything is over. They still argue ALL the time though.

ot3: Greed/Ling/Lan Fan I guess?? But again it’s more a “oh yeah I can vibe with it” than really being super into the ship

in honor of me having a chronic pain flare up so bad i cried during math, i want to talk abt the ot3 and how they hold/cope with their pain.

hardison is the heart of the whole thing, so ofc he tries to make things for his people when he's hurting, to sorta assure himself that he can still be useful/be worth their attention. as much as i rant abt parker and eliot, hardison 100% has inferiority issues that manifest in Making Things. so he makes stuff to subtly convince people to stay.

parker is more of the person to run from their pain. or in their case, literally hide away where no one can find them. at the very least parker will pull away from their boys and almost burrow?? like yk how foxes make tiny dens to hide in?? they do it Like That. when they're ready they'll come back out but i feel like parker needs the security of knowing they can leave.

eliot doesn't acknowledge his pain. he def ignores it until he absolutely has to or until it interferes with a mission/job. it was trained into him to ignore it and now he just does it out of habit. it's canon to me that sophie sat eliot down and made him verbally catalogue everywhere that hurt after seeing him wince just so that he could be Aware of what was going on in his body. eliot is protection-based but he never learned how to protect himself. if that makes sense???

as a spoonie i have a Lot of thoughts abt the ot3 and how they'd handle their pain plus this gives me a distraction

these are SUCH good thoughts...in my heart hardison has adhd so i really like the idea of him being like..."okay well i feel like garbage so lets make somethin cool for my people :) as a distraction :) to cheer me up & not feel like im wasting time etc" except he. the. the executive function button broke and the flare up is getting worse and he cannot stop typing, uh oh, uh oh, and parker has to drag him over to the couch because it's Lie Down Time

parker dropping off the face of the earth to curl up in a comfy tiny space when they're hurting is a Lot and i am Feeling things. it makes them feel safe but also!!! this tracks and im upset about it.

also !!!!!!! yes!!!!!!!! eliot does enough first aid for maintenance (gotta keep the body Functional At All Costs) but long-term stuff gets ignored because like. whats he gonna do. take an advil? what's that gonna do? he'd need enough otc painkillers to shred his stomach lining and the problem'll still be there tomorrow so like. might as well just suck it up

there's a very good fic called Make it look like you don't mean it by andalucite where eliot's in the habit of tuning out injuries, and parker pokes him directly in his busted ribs to Draw His Attention To It and make him take care of himself.... which u may perhaps enjoy :)

who I’m most like: hm well like alfred i’m shy and awkward and am too scared to hurt or kill anything and having a bisexual panic and get made fun of by my elders but like sarah i desperately want more from life which includes getting a hot older vampire to fall in love with me and invite me to his ball to help me get away from my shitty home life and the potential of being turned and getting to be with him for eternity.

who I admire most: sarah chagal. love that the musical said no to the film having her be a damsel in distress and instead she’s taking control of her life and doing what she wants and if what she wants is to return the monsters infections then she will. it’s her choice. i think the kiss in her daydream (die roten stiefel) summarizes her perfectly, krolock kisses her but she then takes over the kiss and pushes him to his knees. what a woman.

who I’d hook up with: i think it would be impossible to have a bad time with herbert

and eliot thrives

he knew what to get sophie. he definitely knew what to get parker. because he listens, he cares. he doesn’t let the little details slide.

when he picks out the fly trap for parker, he smiles to himself because he knows she will like it and it’ll make her happy. and that will make hardison happy.

eliot doesn’t ask for much. he doesn’t think he deserves half of the wonderful life he’s built with his team.

he won’t let himself be happy in the way the couples can, and would never even dream of being with parker and hardison for real, but he can make them happy. and for him, that is enough.

I just binge watched Outer Banks and I am obsessed ??? It has been ages since I watched a Netfilx show that got me so invested in the characters so now I need to vent (spoiler alert):

» JJ, Kie and Pope DESERVE EVERYTHING THEY NEED TO BE PROTECTED AT ALL COST I LOVE THEM THEY’RE MY BABIES.

» Pope is gay and he’s clearly in love with JJ. I know, I know, we are suppose to believe he has feelings for Kie but listen he’s clearly in the closet and he’s projecting on Kie and convincing himself that he likes her in that way. I don’t wanna see him suffer next season pls give him his boyfriend. Also, I loved his relationship with his dad, they’re so pure.

» JJ is a bisexual king and obviously in love with both Kie and Pope. Also, he deserved better. His relationship with his dad, how he craves his approval despite the abuse, really broke my heart. And Rudy is the strongest actor among them, he gave me chills in every scene, the boy has talent.

» Kie is amazing, strong, gentle, compassionate, smart, beautiful, she’s the mom friend and the best friend you could ask for and I love her so much. Also, she clearly feels something for JJ but she’s scared. The “did you tell JJ?” scene was a big ass hint. I also love her dynamic with John B, you can see how clearly she cares about him as a friend and how guilty she feels for not having been there when his dad went missing.

» The 3 of them are amazing characters, they are nuanced, they have weakness and made mistakes but you can see how deeply cared for each others, they are the epitome of “found family”. I really don’t want to see a love triangle\drama between them in season 2, I want them to be happy and healthy in a poly relationship. They’re my OT3.

» John B started as a strong character and I liked him but his boring ass relationship with Sarah ruined the character for me. In the end he was a shitty friend and does not deserve the Pogues. I mean, he wasn’t even able to say a proper goodbye to them and just kept asking for Sarah like ?? dude who fucking care about her these are your people, your family they risked EVERYTHING for you... I really hope he can be redeemed in season 2 and I want to see him interacting more with JJ (like they’re supposed to be best friend ?? but it kind went missing after 3 episodes ??) but I’m hopeless now since him and Sarah are in Nassau he probably will be separated from the Pogues for all next season and this will be definitely the dead of his character. Rip John B.

» Sarah was the worst. I 100% blame the authors for that, the actress is cute and I love to see her interacting with the rest of the cast on social media, but her character is horrible written. Her whole personality is dull, we’re supposed to believe she’s this kind of girl who “pushes people away” coz she’s scared they will see “her real self” but ???? like it makes zero (0) sense... she acts like she has this terrible “dark side” she wants to hide from people but ?? she’s actually not hiding anything ?? She’s an entitled spoilt bitch and she’s not afraid to show it, and everybody love her regardless, she’s the most popular girl at school, her father adores her, she’s got the perfect life... How I am suppose to empathise with her? And don’t let me start ranting about what she did to Kie... she emotionally abused her (yes, ghosting and disappearing from you’re best friend’s life without given a single explanation is emotional abuse and you can see how Kie was affected by that) and for what?? And everything is solved in 5 min and never mentioned again coz the author did not really know how to write complex and nuanced females’ friendship. I really hope she dies in season 2, she really has not purpose beside being John B’s romantic interest and their whole dynamic was super fast with no building whatsoever (also, they literally had sex 72 hours after they realised they like each other ?? what about the “feeling trapped when people get closed to me” conflict?). Her sister Wheezie is far more interest than her and she’s got much more potential.

» Ward Cameron, perfect villain, I loved him. Manipulative, conniving, greedy, I loved how he is firstly presented as the good “american self-made man” archetype and gradually we realise how trash he really is. Moral of the story: there are no such thing as “good rich people”, wealth corrupts you and makes you greedier. Kudos to the writers, I loved that.

» Rafe: my expectation are high now, he has all the potential to be an amazing villain in season 2: rich kid with daddy issue goes psycho is one of my favourite trope (tbh as long as the riches are portrayed as greedy villains I am on board). Also the actor is great, that meltdown scene in ep 9? The "you understand why I did it dad?" scene? That final scene of him screaming? Amazing.

I literally enjoyed every other minor characters (of course I hated Topper and the Kooks and JJ’s dad but I loved how they were written, they felt real and the actors did a great job, kudos to them). Can’t wait for season 2.
