2023 Muppet Year in Review: The Jim Henson's Company's improv comedy show Puppet Up! Uncensored returned for more live performances this year, adding two newly-staged versions of classic sketches originally performed by Jim Henson to its lineup.

At one point, years after Jim's death, Brian Henson was feeling that the Muppet performers (especially the ones who hadn't been with the company from the beginning) were becoming too dependent on sticking to a script and not letting the puppet characters just be themselves. He brought in improv coaches to do workshops with them, and it developed into a decidedly adult live show called Puppet Up! which is still running today. (There are video clips at the linked site, and more can be found online if you look.) The feature film The Happytime Murders was an offshoot of this project, but it died at the box office and reviews weren't kind.

Can you imagine how good life would’ve been of puppets were taken seriously as an art form like Jim Henson wanted? Even Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal weren’t allowed to really be seen as more than just kids movies because nobody can see puppetry as an art form for anyone but children.

you can see that the script originally had ford building an anti-gravity machine for the science fair (which i guess acts as foreshadowing to the portal?), but the sun lightbulb feels like it would've connected to the opening of stanchurian candidate....
