It's finally here! My little "demo" of what I've been coding for months little by little in Python, to prepare a base for my AU stories. Master Swatch has a message to tell you, will you listen to his words? 👀
Today ephemeris is my saint (falls on 6th of January), which is also national holiday in my country. What a nice day to release this brainchild 👏
Hope you like this scene I has been crunching since the 1st of January 😁 If you go to watch it on my YouTube channel for the HD version or more commodity -- where I plan to upload all my AU shorts from now on -- consider to [[SUBSCRIBE]] and give a [[LIKE]] to start nudging my channel into the [[BIG-SHOT]] zone 🚀 Here is the [[LINK]] 👇
((like, it asks for 500 subs for starters with the partnership -- the curve is more steep than the road to affiliate on Twitch's apparently, hmm... 🤔))
More to come in the future, as the framework for the fantasy of my AU is working quite well. If you wonder about when the visual-novel game is going to be released, that will be far flung into the future. I need to acquire more economic stability (like getting a job 🙇♂️) before making the game and releasing it into the world. But meanwhile, you'll be able to interact with my characters and see a glimpse about them and their personal stories before the main game is released, which is pretty dope, isn't it? 😋 Take them as a preface to the main story, whenever I'll be able to focus on the main game without scrambling each month to make ends meet (kromer doesn't grow on charred black egg bearing trees, you know?)
Anyway, hope you feel my video enough motivational to usher you into awesome feats for this year 😎 Believe in yourself and remember, little by little, drop by drop, you can fill up a sea! (even if it takes a [[REAL LONG TIME]] to happen). Patience has its rewards, but don't forget to take good care of yourself while at it 😊
Until then, and thanks for all the support, and for enduring with all my impecunious Spamtonian shortcomings 👋

Have you seen that someone (Clint from Clint's Reptiles) target-trained his tegu? I thought it was super cool. I know a lot of tegus can be a bit bitey because they associated human hands with food, so they think it's feeding time, which is why Clint decided to give target-training a try.
(Clint is a zoologist with a YouTube channel for people who aren't familiar)
Idk, tegus are so cool. Reptiles (and a lot of non-mammals tbh) are a lot smarter than a lot of people think and target training is a good demonstration of that (I also know of an animal sanctuary that is target training an alligator, so it's not just tegus)
Short answer: yes, I watched all of Clint's videos about argentine tegus, including the one showing how he target-trained Gus-Gus. These videos helped affirm my interest in adopting a tegu myself, but the one of the largest factors have been posts by @kaijutegu showing how intelligent and rewarding tegus can be as companions.
Before picking up my new friend from her old keepers, I bought a shocking pink dog toy to be our training target. I chose this specific shade because I personally am allergic to pink, and don't own anything of that color, which would make the toy uniquely associated with feeding time.

I stuck it on a stick and have been showing it to her when offering food. Her lack of appetite and desire to just nap (trying to brumate, I guess) make it a bit difficult with the training, since food is the main reward in that system, and if she's not interested in food, the rest just doesn't work.
The flip side of this is that she's not been trying to nibble on my hands as a snack, so there's that.
We're still establishing rapport, though, and having a solid foundation of trust is pretty much a requirement for any enriching interaction between her and me. I'm looking forward to when we get there!
She was being given up because of changes to her temperament, supposedly becoming cage-defensive and bitey, explained by her entering "guberty" (tegu puberty). I haven't seen a lot of that from her, but this may be because I'm a New Person and therefore Scary, I don't know.
She did bite my sleeve once while I was trying to get her from under a sideboard, but that was clearly because she felt cornered (which she was). After being extracted from under the furniture and on the way to the cage, she also scratched my wrist trying to wiggle herself free, but that one time was very different from her typical behavior. Since then the access to underneath the sideboard has been barricaded shut, so as to avoid repeating this situation, as neither of us enjoyed it.
I have been picking her up almost daily without incident since, so she's not quite the anger monster I was expecting.
Note on picking up tegus: My understanding is that the best way to pick them up is kind of like you would a bunny rabbit: the football hold. Scoop your forearm under the tegu's chest, tummy, and pelvic girdle, then gently grip the base of tail with other hand. My new friend hasn't objected to being lifted that way.
PS - This is not a blanket endorsement of all things Clint has ever said and done. I'm highly critical of his support of breeding spider ball pythons, for one, so don't at me. However the vast majority of his videos are filled with good information, and if he manages to prevent people from impulse-buying a venomous snake or a crocodilian, he's doing good.

*screaming*
*continued screaming*
Okay. So. My introductory Visual C# class.
The professor for that class was Alice. Alice was the person who spoke in the introductory video and the person who we were supposed to email if we had any issues.
But all of the assignments, lectures, and quizzes were written and delivered by Bob. On the youtube channel "Bob's programming academy." The quizzes included Bob's name, like "if you do X will it return the string ProfessorBob, Professor, Bob, or Professor.Bob?"
This class was really frustrating for me because it was structured in such a way that you could easily pass the class with zero knowledge of the subject - it was totally based on quizzes that you could take an unlimited number of times and we *had* weekly programming assignments but they weren't graded so there was no incentive to do them (and look, if I wanted to teach myself programming with no incentives I could fail for several years to do that on my own, I don't need to pay fifty bucks a unit for that; the reason I am in a *class* and am not self-taught is because I need external motivation. That's why I sought out a class).
Also when there *was* a problem with an instruction that was unclear in one of the videos for the assignments, or if I thought I'd done something correctly that was very much incorrect, it wasn't Alice who had created the instructions, it was Bob - in 2017 no less - and I didn't really feel like I could ask Alice for help with an ungraded assignment that she hadn't written.
So. Now. My Python class.
Today is the first day of class. Professor is Charles.
I go to the mandatory attendance quiz and it is word-for-word the same mandatory attendance quiz as the C# class, down to the final question "what is your personal email address so I can keep in contact with you after the semester?"
I look at the syllabus.
Class grade is based on quizzes. We have assignments but none of them are graded. There's no textbook, just a series of videos from Professor Bob's Programming Academy.
So I'd been toying with staying at this school and trying to take more CS classes instead of going to another school, just to try to keep my records easier to manage, but since it seems like that *ENTIRE DEPARTMENT* is five Professor Bobs in a trenchcoat, I will probably be going somewhere else (and once again trying to force myself to do projects that I already know are *good for me to do* but *useless for the class and a massive time suck*)
I should drop this class. I should drop this class and apply for the other school so that I can start taking classes there in the spring because if I take this class and then go into the object oriented programming class in the spring and it's another professor bob sock puppet and I end up taking twelve units of programming classes where all I learn is how to google answers in a short time frame (something I already know how to do thanks) I am going to fucking lose it.
Also, again: I have a Bachelor's Degree. I spent five years at a community college when I was getting that degree. I took probably a dozen online classes starting in 2005 and going until 2011 in the process of getting that degree.
THIS bullshit, this "I'm your professor but actually I'm not and all the materials were created by someone else in the department or came directly from the textbook publisher and there is no writing and there are no assignments everything is multiple choice quizzes that are automatically graded" is *dogshit.*
This is NOT how online classes worked back in my day, not even online math classes, and as much as I know adjuncts are getting fucked over by academia in general, this isn't something that these professors should be getting paid as much as they are to do. Alice checked whether or not students turned in a hello world assignment and gave a pass/fail grades for three discussion boards that were responses to youtube videos. Nothing else in the class required her input. If this is the level of instruction that students are getting then the class is already automated and the students shouldn't have to pay for it.
This is crap. This is an incredible level of crap.

phew okay, with some last minute additions and at a reasonable hour of the day, i guess i'll finally post this thing!
Green's YouTube channel archive (as of October 9 2024)
this is a google drive folder with copies of all of green's videos and shorts, text copies of the entire video comment sections (yes i mean the ENTIRE comment sections), screenshots of green's community q&a answers, and some miscellaneous screenshots as well. if anything on the channel (or maybe even the entire channel) gets deleted as part of the influencer arc, like those couple tiktoks already have been, then it should at least be saved here.
while we've still got some time, please tell me if there's anything you think i should add to this and i'll go ahead and do that!
i'm not going to include any of the tiktok or instagram posts in this though because i know absolutely nothing about those websites lol. however there should at least be captures of those posts on the wayback machine, and i'll try to take some myself later (it's down right now).
i learned how to run a python script for this please be proud of me /j

HTTYD Antarctica AU
I have been playing with this AU for a while, it's basically a modern HTTYD AU, but the riders are researchers for a base in antarctica. the base is called "the edge" and they bring their pets with them.
Hiccup is a technician and engineer for the base, he brought toothless with him, who I headcanon as a melanistic Norwegian forest cat. he also has his pilot's license and six different 3D printers, and a clock radio that can somehow run Doom.
I want to say that Astrid is the surveyor and radio operator of the group, she often goes out in the plane to conduct surveys of the weather and land, basically a glorified scout. she is also in charge of the base's safety. she is also Hiccup's right hand man, and I head canon stormfly to be a golden blue macaw.
Snotlout is just there to be with his friends and impress his dad. He does do maintenance work and keep log books. he does have a journal about his time at the base that he plans on publishing titled "how the toilet somehow froze over, and other stories from antarctica.". I think I want hookfang to be a Doberman maybe?
Fishlegs is the medic, he once had to perform surgery on himself after his appendix exploded. he survived the surgery, he also once allowed his nieces and nephews to come visit him and Meatlug (who is a kunekune pig) during the summer months.
Ruffnut and tuffnut are just there for the heck of it, they run their own youtube channel that documents their trip, and Tuffnut is the unofficial cook. like Snotlout, they perform odd jobs around the base. there was an incident where they ran out of food and had to wait a week before a new shipment came, all they had in the fridge were a box of lucky charms cereal, ketchup, mustard, sweet chili sauce, a few tortillas, a half eaten tin of kippers, and one of Hiccup's open can of Monster. they had to somehow make a meal out of that. Barf and Belch are a two headed green tree python.
Heather joins the group later as a way to escape her drug addict brother, Dagur. she later goes undercover on board of an illegal whaling ship run by Viggo and his crew and almost gets killed. Windshear is an african grey parrot.
of course this isn't a lord bunny AU without an OC...
Nott never met the riders before until she signs up for the trip as another medic after Fishleg's appendix went boom. she has albinism and is very light sensitive and is legally blind without her glasses that she choses not to wear for just how thick the lenses are, to her they're like two mason jar lids being held together by a wire. she is mostly active at night and is very shy and quiet and is really only seen with Fishlegs. her pet is an axolotl that glows under a black light named Marauder. basically Marauder is a modern day version of the Flightmare.

How are you hanging in there?
Currently up to 102 job applications sent out. Getting a somewhat steady stream of rejection letters now. Wasn't getting anything at all before, but now every couple days, stuff I applied to two months ago is finally having the decency to say "yeah, sorry, we're going with someone else."
Got a workforce meeting this friday. We're gonna try getting me an education. I actually should ask but since this is a government work program that means they will be paying me to go to school. We picked out five options last friday, between a couple different Adobe classes (learning Premiere and etc.) and a couple of programming classes (learning Javascript or Python). I need to call some schools this week and see which one grabs my fancy, but I'm strong leaning towards Python. I've had a lot of friends push me in that direction to learn it on my own terms.
I also, uh, should probably figure out how much compensation the government is going to give me for this. My caseworker gave me the option to either do education or job site stuff, and suggested the education, so presumably I am also getting paid for that in place of a job. I just, uh, forgot to ask rates.
Besides that, the looming threat of a lot of stuff I'd rather not talk about publicly still exists. Let's hope my roommate doesn't throw me out.
On the bright side, while juggling this stuff, I've almost got all the material collected for the next video for my Youtube channel. Gonna get to editing that soon.

The social lives of reptiles, I feel, is an under explored topic in captive husbandry. Most seasoned keepers will strongly warn against cohabitation, and for good reason! Many enclosures are arguably too small for a single individual, and to add a second or third is a recipe for disaster. Many keepers will start off their reptile journey with the question, "what is the minimum size enclosure for [x]?" And go from there.
However, there is so much to learn from reptiles if we give them as much space, and furnish it as naturally as possible. Multiple hides, textures, elevations, plants, wind, water, and the closest approximation of sunlight available, and natural fluctuations of each, all work together to encourage a wide range of natural behaviors, and likely biological needs that we may not be fully aware of.
One of those behaviors is how these animals might interact with not only members of their own species, but other animals that are native to their natural habitat. No reptile lives in isolation for its entire life, of course it will come together to breed, but what do they do when meeting another individual out of mating season? Is it always a battle for territory? Are they cannibalistic? Or do they learn from each other and share resources like burrows? Do they communicate in ways that we cant see or hear?
The YouTube channel Reptiles and Research has made a few videos on the topic of cohabitation, and I will be the first to admit these videos can have a bit of a argumentative narrative to them. However they are well researched and cite studies on wild individuals as well as those kept in zoos.
Reptiles and Research recently put out a video on cohabitating ball pythons, and if you're curious about the topic, I highly recommend giving it a watch!
