Some commentary:

1. Dragons in WOF are often described as moving around while holding objects like spears and scrolls. This usually looks weird to me in the graphic novels, where they mostly end up doing a strange three-legged walk that I imagine would get tiring after a while. There's also a part in The Lost Heir where Anemone apparently walks around with a lance jammed in her armpit... foreleg-pit... whatever. My headcanon is that this three-legged walk doesn't really happen, and instead the way to walk while holding something is to either hold it with your wing, or (as shown here) walk with your wings and hold it with your forefeet. I think this idea might sound weird and therefore not occur to people because they think that the wing is so thin that it must be too flimsy to walk on, but I feel that if it's strong enough to carry a dragon in flight it must be strong enough for this. Maybe. It makes sense to me anyway.

2. Originally this was sort of inspired by the pose at 0:34 in this video (cw for violence). I wasn't really satisfied with how my attempt looked so I changed the head to be doing something else. I still like that pose though and I might try it again.

3. This was inspired by Spyro sleeping on the deck chair in the remake of Spyro 2. I don't know if they have deck chairs in Pyrrhia. My friend told me the chair is about to get impaled and i guess he's correct. Maybe it's made of a very thick fabric.

4. This is how dragons T-pose.

5. What do dragons do with their legs in flight? This question bedevils me. When I was creating my Minecraft skin (this) I changed how the legs are posed during the flight animation several times, and I'm still not sure it really looks right.

6. Before I got into WOF I mostly only drew anthro characters, so something I want to understand better is how to draw a character standing on two legs without making it look like they have a human skeleton. My headcanon is that dragons can learn to stand and even walk like this, but most don't. You can tell an expert from an amateur because an expert will stand all the way up onto their toes, whereas an amateur will keep their heels on the ground. I think the main students of this technique are circus performers. If you do this in public you will be stared at. The only tribe where a lot of dragons can do it is Rainwings, because they think it's funny. The only major non-Rainwing character who can do it is Qibli.

7. Standing on your forelegs isn't really considered harder than standing on your hind legs, but it is considered a more advanced technique because you're much more likely to snap your neck if you fall over.

8. It's really hard for me to draw a tail curling away from the camera like this. I don't exactly understand what I'm doing wrong. The scales look weirdly skewed to me, like a Playstation game where the polygons are touching the edge of the screen. This happens regularly but I haven't figured out what to do about it.

9. Standing on two legs is a lot easier if you brace the other two up against the wall.

10. Wings look silly here. Wings are the hardest part of these sketches to make look naturalistic I think, probably because I conceptualise dragon bodies as like ... a dog with wings, as opposed to a bat with forelegs. Hopefully if I keep doing this I will be able to develop a holistic understanding of the anatomy of a body plan that does not exist. That's my ambition, anyway.

a mainly drew them to practice more exaggerated design aspects (shown most prominently in Qibli’s tail) but i quite liked how their designs came out, especially Qibli, Kinkajou, and Winter! I’m probably going to change Turtle at a later date but I wanted to share him anyways :)

- cobra-like hood is inherited from his mother and grandfather

- various tattoos including:

—> a scorpion, something most outclaws- especially the youngins- have (placed on his left shoulder)

—> the eye of onyx (placed on his left shoulder, just below the scorpion)

—> a snake wrapped around his left arm

—> three moons placed on his left side, representing the moons Moonwatcher was born under. his right side has the moons Winter was born under!

—> various sketchy-styled tattoos on his tail. they don’t really represent anything, but some of them are from sketches some of the scorpion den dragonets would make. his favorite is a little sun Ostrich drew.

- still wears his armband even though most of the rocks are missing

- talon wing markings, hints of his royal descent

- scroll necklace, similar to that of a portable journal. the jewelry he enchanted to protect his soul.

winter

- the singular horn on his forehead is a thing that specifically occurs in the royal family! he cant really pass it down, though, considering he got exiled. and is considered dead.

- the horn jewelry is on both main/top horns

- he likes to decorate his antlers on special occasions

- his fur is braided, an offense committed by moon (good at braiding hair, learned it from her mother as a part of nightwing culture) and kinkajou (absolute shit). he keeps the braids in despite his many protests.

- large frill!!

- her horns are cooky and going every which way

- she doesn’t wear traditional jewelry often, usually sticking to wearing flowers, but she does have a necklace with the mind-blocking skyfire on it

- as one of the rainwings kidnapped, taken to, and experimented on in the nightwing volcanic island, she has four prominent scars. the first is on her ear (identification tag; ripped off once, hence the split ear), another on her neck (iron ring), and two on her arms. (iron rings).

Okay, I was thinking about the parallels between Alastor and Darkstalker and am now superrr autistic about a Hazbin Hotel/Wings of Fire crossover sort of thing. This is gonna be LONG, so thoughts under the read more.

Sunny is the Charlie of this story, kind of obvious but also, I can entirely see her doing this sort of thing. I think it’d be something like Jade Mountain, but for any dragons that feel like they’re on the wrong path.

I see Tsunami as the Vaggie of this, instead of having the two of them romantically involved, I think it’s more of an older sister-younger sister dynamic between the two of them. I think Tsunami would make a good Vaggie parallel because she also had a violent history that she needs to hide. 

I’m swapping out one of the other Dragonets for Deathbringer to be a sort of Angel parallel. His personality fits it more and he’s a bit closer backstory wise. While obviously he’s nowhere near as fucked up, we’re not getting anything like Angel’s story in WOF and I feel like being an assassin is one of the darker jobs in that series.

Admittedly, it was also so I could get Huskerdust parallels. Not even gonna touch any sort of Glorybringer drama, but Glory and Husk=similar enough in personality, plus similar ship dynamics. 

This part is also going to repeat in the Jade Mountain version, but Alastor and Darkstalker. That’s what got me started on this idea anyway, and…just…yes.

I think Glory ended up under his control during some quest for power he has, and our Niffty character is Whiteout’s reanimated corpse that turned out…well…wrong. Also, I’m going to have the royal characters as stand-ins for overlords, which will become relevant a few points down.

The Exorcists are the IceWings. I think in this version they’re less relevant so I haven’t figured out their part in it as much, but in the Jade Mountain version, there’s way more to it.

Overlords are the royal family. I think Carmilla is probably either Coral or Glacier in this version, haven’t thought much about anyone else.

Rosie is Scarlet and the cannibals are the SkyWings

I would have found a way to get Peril into this, but it would be even more complicated. She was an alternate idea I had for Vaggie’s role.

(This is kind of reading like a play casting now)

(I was very happy to think of this) Now, what three antagonists all have names that start with the same letter and are closely linked to each other? Both the Vees and the SandWing Sisters! (confetti)

Vox is Blister, smart but eventually destroyed by his own ego and pettiness. Velvette is Blaze, because they are both pretty and I had no idea. Val is Burn, frankly an overly violent dumbass. I would personally like to see him get bit by a dragonbite viper and die. 

(This also gave me an idea where Val is Scarlet and Angel is Peril. Goddamn ideas)

Speaking of snakes! This is a place where I can put Peril! Clay is Sir Precious! Peril is Cherri! I take back what I said about not finding able to put Peril in. Yippee.

Lucifer would probably be Thorn? Actually, the duck man will end up being Thorn in both of these because she has a parental relationship with both of our Charlies (the Jade Mountain Charlie is Qibli, spoiler alert)

So, in this, it’s closer to the actual Hazbin canon. Sunny has her idea for this great project to help dragons and Darkstalker shows up and is like “:) i see you need some help!”

Anyway, on to the next one with Jade Mountain. This one, I’ve actually thought about because there are fewer easy parallels, so it should have more plot.

first, main character parallels, getting it over with: Qibli-Charlie, Winter-Vaggie, Kinkajou-Angel (i have explanations for those two), Moon-Husk, and Darkstalker-Alastor with his reanimated Whiteout-Niffty again.

1. Aurelion Sol

My 2 favorite things mixed into one- space and dragons! Not only that but his voice is god-tier! He’s a bastard and I love him!

2. Giratina

My favorite Pokémon- right next to Garchomp. Also doesn’t look like a traditional dragon but I love them anyway!

3. Galaxy Eyes Photon Dragon

My soul card. I got into playing Yugioh in middle school and it’s just stayed with me, this being my favorite card

4. Drogon

A little mainstream but I ADORE him! He’s a such a good boi! Precious baby!

5. Cricket

She is precious and adorable and sweet- her and Blue have to be the best thus far next to Moon, Qibli and Winter (and yes I read Wings of Fire- I even have a few ocs if anyone is interested)

As for my OWN dragons…

1. Methuselah

The bastard dad, he’s been my emotional crutch, my support, my confidant- my everything since middle school. He helped me get through a lot of shit and has to be my most developed character. I love him to absolute bits.

2. Elryk

The old man- I made him in high school and just fell in love. He originally was my ultimate villain and he still is but there’s so much more to him now- my second most developed character.

3. Aurelia Whitehorn

Made her for a DnD campaign that I played with some close friends a year back and she has to be the one I bonded to the most. She’s the daughter of a character I played in the original campaign so she means that much more to me- I miss playing her dearly!

4. Rayla Arkenire

She may not look like it but she’s a blue (lightning) dragon- another DnD character I really bonded with and I’m so happy to be playing her again in Pathfinder. My spicy, sparky baby!

5. Tiamat

Not often to I fall in love with my designs as quickly as I did with her- I adore her! I’m so proud of her personality, her design, her place in the lore- I really outdid myself with her!

do you think peril was in the wrong for burning the scroll? additionally, do you think tui having peril be the one to release darkstalker was the right move?

Okay so, full disclosure, I read Wings of Fire out of order and Escaping Peril was the last book I got right as I lost interest in the franchise. So unlike every other book in my Wings of Fire collection I never properly read it both cause I was losing interest in the series by this point and thought Peril was boring. Now I think she's actually really interesting and I am trying to properly read it. Just know I don't have as much familiarity with Escaping Peril and Peril as a character because of this.

However, Peril Did Nothing Wrong Here's Why-

Okay that's partially a joke but I don't think Peril was wrong for burning the scroll. This is Peril right after going through the animus magic hell train where she was enchanted by her dad and also revealed Ruby to be an enchanted and also having to face Scarlet aka her abuser. Peril has been used and abused for years, groomed to become a killing machine, and after trying so hard to not be that dragon anymore, to recover from her abuse and to move on, she was forced back into the role by animus magic.

Peril had no idea burning the scroll would unleash Darkstalker. No one knew that would happen. Peril only wanted to prevent people from using the scroll to hurt people.

Escaping Peril, page 283

Fighting over power, Peril thought. Like every dragon ever. But it's not there power, it's Darkstalker's, and they want to use it, the same way Scarlet used mine. But that scroll is too dangerous to be in the world. Even if a good dragon controlled it... even if it didn't change that good dragon to have that much power...even if we could somehow guarantee that it would never fall into evil talons...it shouldn't exist. Look how good dragons are fighting over it already. Nobody should be the boss of someone else's magic. And nobody should ever be hurt by that scroll.

Peril actually has a really interesting position her. She's a firescales dragon, one who is painfully familiar with people using her ability for there own gain. She takes the position that even if this could be used for good, even if they could proof it from any possible form of evil...it's still shouldn't exist.

Using the scroll uses the power of someone else, the abilities of someone else, someone else who is still alive, someone who has no control over there own power, someone who can't consent to that use. Even if Darkstalker is an evil murder dragon Peril can't let that happen, she can't let what happened to her happen to someone else. No matter how evil they are.

It's frankly a position I'm inclined to agree with her really, Qibli and Winter are fighting over the greater good ignoring that the thing there using for the greater good is not there's to use. And while I still think this fight feels horribly contrived and out of character in some cases I like Peril in this scene.

Also Qibli and Winter have...not made the greatest impression on her. Qibli and Moon straight up say to her face that Moon can read her mind and Qibli already has plans to kill her which...that's a first impression alright. (and also Moon is just a big jerk in this book, I'm sorry for this tangent but I really like the Moon characterization done in this book and how she makes snap judgements based on other people's minds and how awful she can be because of it, which they kept this trait but it's nice to see)

Qibli also interrogates her, makes her uncomfortable, pokes at her insecurities. It's not a good impression at all.

Winter...Winter rams himself into her, almost dies, and then when he doesn't starts talking about how he did that to save them from her because clearly she's here to kill them.

Now both actions are informed by the "known mass murderer" part of Peril's character but my point is Peril has not had a good impression of them.

She has no reason to believe they would actually use that scroll for good, it's actually pretty nice of her to assume there good dragons. Peril was acting on her emotions right after the animus magic helltrain. She was as wrong as someone who broke a vase without knowing breaking the vase would release the The Devil.

Now if Peril should of released Darkstalker from a writing perspective is a different question, one I'm inclined to say not really...I like what does scene does with Peril's character but I don't like what it does with everyone else's character. And Peril is mostly absent for future books. Not only that Peril doesn't actually have a lot of interesting things to connect herself with Darkstalker, she has magic that's considered evil and was abused and is used to killing but that's so superficial I don't think it's a compelling comparison.

I think any of the other protagonists would have a better choice since they have a more compelling connection with Darkstalker and could actually be un-mindcontrolled. We don't get Peril's feelings about accidentally releasing the murder dragon and I think that's a shame.

favourite character ivy wings of fire i love you so much and i'm so sorry the fandom treats you and your debut book like trash just because you're a human in a dragon book series and i wish you were written better </3 i hope you know that ivy wings of fire was The glorpy of mine before i got into pmtok i had so many aus i'm still so normal about her i want her to be safe and happy and cherished that is all

second favourite character i'll be normal for once and say a dragon character in the dragon book series anyways it's some rando side character named boto. from what i remember he was silly rainforest dragon who just gave me the vibes of worlds shyest even if it was just him being nervous for the sake of plot. he appeared briefly in a few of the books and i think there was only one or two times he was properly called by name. i love this guy (my other pick for this that was more normal was winter he's one of the protags and i'm normal about him i wish he was written better)

least favourite character i was gonna say qibli but honestly i have more grievances with The Fandom's Characterization and Biases(tm) than qibli himself. and with humans like not even heath i genuinely hate i think it's fun to make fun of that guy and also i found that piece of shit interesting to write. but points at blue and cricket I Don't Like Them just by proxy of how i just. dislike how the third arc was handled getting into the specifics of those two would be its own whole essay just know i don't like them. ignoring those two bc it's a third arc thing tsunami annoys me

I plan to draw Carnelian soon because this part got me thinking about the Jade Winglet and I found this one panel from the Moon Rising graphic novel where she’s thinking “I don’t not mumble” and she looks so fucking sad and I love HER <3333333333

ALSO so I thought a lot about who I wanted to draw for each lyric. “It’s a new world” is the DoD because even after the war they’re still figuring out what it’s like to interject with dragons outside of the perfectly clean and sterile environment they grew up in, working out the individual cultures of their tribes. “It’s a new start” is Avalanche and the surviving guardians because Kestrel and Webs were both exiled during the war. Though Kestrel could technically return to the Sky Kingdom now that Ruby is queen, she still deserted her tribe for the sake of her dragonets. Avalanche is trying to nudge Kestrel towards this whole “new start” idea. “It’s alive with the beating of” is Peril and Robin because Peril grew up under the belief that Robin had been drowned, and Robin grew up under the belief that his family had abandoned him because he didn’t have any fire, and finding out that Robin is alive and has a family who didn’t hate him is huge for both of them. And, obviously, “young hearts” is the next generation of world-savers. I wanted to include Carnelian and Bullfrog as well, but didn’t have the space :(

Qibli and Moon have one last conversation before flying to Pantala. Set during the last chapters of The Dangerous Gift

(Posting below tag for those who wanna read it here)

Qibli was both nervous and optimistic. Cautious, yet roaring to go. Such a contradiction in his mind seemed to be the norm at this point. Ever since Darkstalker, he felt like he was on the verge of something. But he never figured out what it was.

It'd been some time since then. It felt like months, and honestly, he couldn't tell anymore. The days flew by, and he was still awash in their tide. At this point, it was better to just live day by day instead of worrying about the future. But that thought process made him even more anxious.

Not that anyone can tell.

The past while was great. No more deadly dragons of nightmares, no prophecies. He'd returned to Queen Thorn's palace and helped. It wasn't the most glamorous way to end his stand off with an ancient and powerful dragon, but he was satisfied. A quiet, uneventful life to return to.

Fate, however, showed up in the form of a beautiful Nightwing named Moonwatcher – or Moon as she preferred - and tore the 'epilogue' down.

"Are you okay?" she asked in that familiar, concerned voice of hers.

Qibli turned his black eyes to her, not realizing that his wings had been fidgeting. Something that had started after his encounter with Darkstalker. Whenever he was stressed, his wingclaws would start shuffling. He couldn't let anyone see his anxiety, especially now.

And yet all Moon had to do was look at her with those big green orbs of hers and he fell apart inside. The instant their eyes met, he couldn't lie to her.

It's why he avoided them so much these days.

"No," Qibli didn't bother lying. Ever since Moon showed up to see him, he promised himself he'd never lie to her. A good boyfriend wouldn't do that.

Well, maybe a white lie or two. Everyone lies, after all. But not anything serious like this.

"I could tell," Moon reached out one of her black wings and touched his with them. The membrane was like a starry sky, and he could get lost in it forever.

"What's wrong?" she asked gently, forcing him to stop.

They had decided to take a small walk around Sanctuary. They should be sleeping, as they had a long flight tomorrow. But Qibli was so restless that he decided to explore this place a little bit, and he'd run into Moon doing so. It was as if she knew he was out and about, too.

She couldn't read his mind, as he still donned the Skyfire. The black rock was attached to an armband, and that was the one thing stopping the psychic Nightwing from reading him like one of her many books. Even still, she was acutely attuned to everyone around her.

"I mean, where to start on this one?" Qibli rolled his eyes sarcastically. "Let's see, we have a bunch of dragons from another continent sharing a roof with us," he held up a talon as if counting, then raised another. "Secondly, giant evil plant. That's never good. And no army to bail us out." Another talon was raised. "Oh, and we just got done with an ancient and powerful evil. That we were thrown into a collision path with right after Scarlet. Which came from an unending war."

Moon winced at his words. He was playing it off as sarcastic and jovial, but his eyes must've looked dead, as she never broke eye contact.

"I suppose when you lay it out like that, it's hard not to lose your mind," Moon laughed nervously. "It does kind of feel like a never-ending cascade of events that just keeps tumbling down, tumbling down, and tumbling down again."

"And every time we breathe a sigh of relief, something happens." Qibli finished her thoughts. He picked up a nearby rock, settling near the river flowing down Sanctuary. Across from them, he saw Silkwings bustling amongst themselves, speaking to the few Leafwings that joined them.

SIlkwings were, admittedly, beautiful. From their iridescent scales to their four wings that resembled moths or dragonflies. Their twitching antennae that swished and swayed with every change in the air. That wasn't even getting to their silk, which strongly resembled a spider. Except it wasn't coming from a horrifying nightmare of legs and eyes.

That wasn't even getting to the Leafwings. They were more like the dragons Qibli knew, but even they had something foreign. Was it their horns that resembled branches? Leafy wings? The fact that they could talk to plants!? Or was it simply their green scales, as that wasn't quite common either.

Honestly, it was anyone's guess.

Qibli couldn't help but stare. Not only were dragons from another world real, but they were here. Right in front of them. And needed their help. And Qibli, without a second thought, rushed in to help them. Because that was what he did.

And yet, I feel like it's just not good enough.

Qibli was very grateful that he wore the Skyfire, as if Moon had heard that intrusive thought, she wouldn't never let it go.

"I do have to question why we're going, though," Moon said, watching the Silkwings and Leafwings work together. Both wanted to help, but it was better not to. They knew what they were doing, and they didn't need to accidentally get jabbed by Qibli's scorpion tail or something.

"What do you mean? They need us," Qibli's yellow scaled face frowned.

"No, I know," Moon's green and black face was contemplative. Her brows were constantly furrowed, as if having the biggest of headaches, but Qibli learned to read beyond that.

"Then, what?"

"Why are we, dragonets, going when there are trained warriors that could?"

Qibli burst out laughing before he could stop himself. A few dragons looked their way, and it was all he could do to hide his face behind his yellow wings.

"What?" Moon looked at him, mouth open slightly. "It's a legitimate question!"

"I know it is, and honestly, I never thought about it until you mentioned it," Qibli said between snickers. "Although, I have a guess."

"Do tell."

"Because the adults realized that they could have dragonets do everything while they can sit back," Qibli grinned widely.

That got a laugh out of Moon.

"Okay, that's probably true," she giggled. Just the sound of her giggling was enough for Qibli's worries to subside. "If I ever have any dragonets, you better believe I'm passing down that logic."

"Same. I'll be resting in the sun, having dragons fan me, and then pass off important duties to the three-year-old. Did wonders for me."

"Did it?" Moon questioned, and Qibli froze.

He never told her about his past. And he never was going to for a long time.

Yet it just slipped out.

"Oh, yes. It's how I got to be the handsome dragon you see before you," he placed a claw over his breast, wings splayed, head turned to a powerful pose. "I even have a nice scar to sell the look!" he ran a talon across the long, jagged scar across his face.

Despite the whole bravado act, Moon didn't buy a single word. She looked at him with a small frown, seeing right through him.

"Do you want to talk about it?" She asked quietly.

"Nothing to say," Qibli shrugged. "Mom was abusive, and Queen Thorn – who I love, mind you – kinda… threw me into the war. That's the long and short of it."

"And yet it still bothers you. I can see it in your eyes," she scooted a bit closer. "Ever since you went on that adventure with Winter, you changed."

"Oh, speaking of Winter, did I tell you that Kinkajou visited Winter here?" Qibli changed the subject. "And she kept coming back, each time looking a bit happier?"

Moon, who's frown had deepened at Qibli's change of topic, now looked at him with a blank expression.

"No," she whispered.

"I know, I said the same thing. And yet…"

"No!" Moon stood up, shaking herself. Again, some of the other dragons looked over. "No way. I refuse to believe it!" Then, she paused. "Wait… I remember reading her mind back when we met. And how she admired his scales… no, no way! That couldn't…."

"Yet, she came all this way – on her own – to meet Mister Grump," Qibli smiled wickedly. "What does that tell you?"

"Yes, but… Kinkajou!"

"I know."

"Winter!"

"His real name is Prince Grumpington."

"Kinkajou!? Winter!?" Moon cupped her palms over her mouth, realizing she was shouting. She settled back down, scales scarlet. "You… you're not pulling my tail, are you?"

"I promised myself I'd never lie to you," Qibli chuckled. "But I understand how difficult it is to believe because I sure didn't at first. Of course, I could be a hundred percent wrong, but…"

The two dragons in question couldn't be any different. Kinkajou was an energetic, feisty little Rainwing that always spoke her mind. Nothing about her was proper or royal or whatever Winter would find remotely appealing.

Winter was legitimately the exact opposite of Kinkajou. A banished prince with a broody face – oh, suddenly things made a little bit more sense, now that Qibli thought about – that couldn't tell a joke to save his life. The Icewing took everything at face value and more than once attempted to kill Qibli. At least, threatened to.

And yet, Qibli never had a closer friend than that sourpuss of a dragon. Glancing to Moon, who was still processing the new information, it was obvious that Winter wanted her. Heck, Qibli was about to let him win. And yet, the light that showed up in Moon's eyes whenever she looked at him…

… Qibli saw the same when Winter looked at him. Oh, it was tiny. Barely noticeable. But ever since he got together with Moon, he recognized the look and remembered.

Suddenly, him making a joke to his mother about the two of them getting married didn't seem as out of left field as it was at the time.

Perhaps if Moon wasn't around, the two of them… well, no point in thinking about 'what ifs'.

"Do you know how?" Moon whispered.

"Kinkajou mentioned the two of them bonding over scav-err, humans. I guess that did it."

If there was one thing that could top the revelation of the two most unlikely dragons, it was the fact that scavengers were called humans. And they were intelligent beings. If Wren was a good example of them, they were dragon-like in intelligence. Qibli didn't think he ever ate a scavenger, but a lot of his memory was scattered in his first three years of life.

"Humans," Moon said. "This past week has been one thing after the other. Pantalan dragons, sentient plants, Winter and Kinkajou, humans…"

"Honestly, I stopped being surprised right around the time Darkstalker showed up," Qibli shrugged.

The massive Nightwing that burst out of Jade Mountain and nearly committed genocide against the Icewings was the tipping point for Qibli. Internally, he threw up his wings and walked away from the world making any form of sense.

Big, scary dragon the size of a boulder? Sure. Humans talking? Why not? Dragons from another land? Yeah, sure, add that to the list.

But just as Moon winced at the name of Darkstalker, so did Qibli in his mind. He vividly remembered the last conversation he had with Darkstalker. How close he was to falling to his temptations. How sincere and genuinely lonely the massive, immortal Nightwing had felt. Had he not been a brutal monster with the heart of a sociopath, Qibli probably would've stood right alongside him.

Their goals were similar; make the world a better place. But the price was not worth it. Darkstalker didn't see it, and that was his end.

And now he was this adorable little dragonet called Peacemaker. Qibli still kept his eye on the dragonet, but even he had to admit that the Rainwing/Nightwing hybrid was endearing. Still, something in the back of his mind said that there was always a chance of a return.

And if Qibli truly did break magic…

"And there it is again," Moon pulled him back to reality. He snapped his head to her, seeing her worried smile. "I hope you realize that I haven't forgotten what I said before my own sense of reality was warped."

"What did you say again?" Qibli pretended to clean his ear.

"That you changed. You seem lighter. Happier. But there's still a weight holding you down. And I understand if you don't want to tell me what it is, but I want you to know that I am willing to listen to anything you have to say."

"Honestly, there's nothing to-"

"Stop. It." Moon gave him a fierce look unlike anything she ever did before. It was like he was staring at another dragon. A faint snarl, a commanding presence. She certainly didn't get it from her mother. Her father? Qibli had no idea who that was, but it was the explanation.

"If you don't want to talk about it, that's okay," she continued. "I understand. There are things I don't talk about either. But you were about to lie to me right after saying you would never do so. If you don't want to discuss it, just tell me. But do not lie to me!"

Qibli stared. Moon never got angry. And right now, she looked like she was ready to cry. He read her face like a book, and saw she was angry at herself for snapping.

But… she was right. He was already about to break that promise.

"I can't tell you," Qibli admitted quietly. "I buried that deep down. And you're right, my little adventure with Winter solved a lot of problems. I got closure to things. But I am still having difficulty uh… processing it all."

"I understand," Moon held his claw in hers. The touch was enough to make his heart leap in his throat. For some reason, tears threatened.

"But I can show you," Qibli stood up. "Not here. Let's find somewhere quiet."

Moon shot him a questioning look but followed him to the outskirts of Sanctuary. Past where the Queens stayed with their tribes. Past Thorn. He briefly considered stopping to see her but moved on. She'd want to know as well, being more of a mother than his biological one. It was already taking every ounce of his willpower to back out of what he was about to do.

"I just hope that when I do this, you can take me off your worry list," Qibli forced an optimistic tone. "Really, I can take care of myself. It's me who has to worry about you!"

"Qibli, you will always be on my worry list," Moon shot him a disapproving look. "And right now, you're at the top."

"Well, I shouldn't be. We have a whole continent to free!"

"And how do you think I'll feel if you're still being wrapped up in what you feel, being unable to do anything? Even if it is just listening. I'll be so concerned about you that I could find it hard to focus. So, even if you can't tell me everything, I just want to understand."

Qibli hadn't thought about that. He cursed himself internally. He had a lot of growing to do if he was going to be a good boyfriend.

Eventually, they reached a small cave overlooking part of the river. Animals scurried out of their sight, and the few dragons paid them little mind. He thought he saw another human, but it may have been a trick of the light.

"Okay," Qibli paced nervously. "Uh… I don't know how to do this. Well, I do, but… well, I'm sure you figured out what I'm going to do."

"I have an idea, but I don't want to presume," Moon nodded. In the faint light, Qibli once more noted the teardrop shaped markings under her eyes. Whenever he quickly glanced, it as if she was constantly crying. Very strange, the markings were. But they added to her looks.

"Right, well… if it gets too much, let me know," Qibli swallowed nervously.

"I will," Moon promised.

Taking a deep breath, Qibli removed the Skyfire band that once shielded his thoughts from her.

And then he pulled up everything he could muster.

First was his time as a hatchling. His lifestyle, a life of constant crime and appeasement issues. He remembered wanting his mother's love, only to have it returned with scorn and disinterest. The day he earned his scar flashed in his mind. He felt his mother's – Cobra's - talons ripping into his scales. The sense of betrayal and hurt. The need to make her love him. How he felt like he was a bad son to earn such a scar.

That wasn't even getting to his siblings, Sirocco and Rattlesnake. He was used to being pushed around by them. Nothing he ever did was good enough for the three of them.

And yet, when Thorn showed up wanting him, he felt like he was betraying them by leaving. He was loved. He was accepted. And it was never enough because it didn't give him what he really wanted.

A life of pleasing others followed. His willingness to give Moon up for her to be happy with Winter. The desire to be needed. Wanted. Even after coming to grips with his family history and moving on from his mother's approval. Vulture, his grandfather, was still out there. His mother, although arrested, was still a threat. And here he was, about to leave his Queen to venture to the unknown.

Where he may never come back to protect the one dragon that gave him a berth.

Then came the feelings about Darkstalker. Again, how similar they were. How tempted he was to accept his aid. The fact that the two of them, indeed, shared wants and interests.

And finally, the future that loomed with himself and Moon. Even after all this time, he felt like he didn't deserve her. And even if he did, where would they go? He certainly couldn't leave Thorn. Not after everything she did for him. But there was no way he'd ask Moon to come live in the desert. Same with her mother. They were in the perfect environment.

And Qibli would never tear that away from them.

Each and every negative thought he felt over the past month or two loomed like a specter. Darkstalker, Vulture and his mother. Moon.

Himself.

They watched him quietly. Waiting to see what he'd do. Would he live up to his promises? Would he be the dragon that deserved the second chance he got? Could he truly move on from his own insecurities and needs? He felt like he did. He knew he'd taken the right step.

But was it enough? He was barely six years old, if he was actually that age. Truthfully, he had no idea how old he was. He just went with what Thorn told him and what he guessed. It never mattered. He'd forgotten his own hatchday. It was never important enough to remember. It was only when someone did that he remembered, only to forget once again.

A startled cry from Moon snapped him from his negativity. His eyes snapped open – he hadn't realized he'd shut them – and saw Moon clutching her head. Her talons looked ready to draw blood, and without thinking, he dashed over and pulled them away.

Tears streamed down her face, and she looked at him as if seeing him for the first time. Before he could react, she threw her arms and wings around him, sobbing into his shoulder.

"I never knew," Moon whispered. "No wonder why you could never tell me…"

"And your pain is why I was so hesitant," Qibli shakily returned the hug.

"My pain comes from what you feel," Moon gripped him tighter. "Moons, how do you even wake up every day?"

"By burying it like everything else," Qibli shrugged. "My wants and feelings aren't as important as the ones I love."

"That is the wrong way to do this, Qibli!" Moon pulled away, looking him in the eye. "You have to talk to others! You can't just hold that all in! I don't know if it's bravado, or if it's how you grew up, but it's not healthy!"

"Me? Healthy? Ha," Qibli chuckled. "You just saw how my entire life wasn't healthy."

"That doesn't mean you should keep at it!" Moon gave him a stern look. "I know you're using sarcasm as a shield, and I get it. I really, really do. But I want to know the real Qibli, whoever that is. That's the Qibli I want to love."

"But Moon… this is me," he answered blankly. Did she just say love?

"It's part of you. And it's part of you that drew me to you," she shook her head. "But it's okay to let the shield down. It's okay to let it all out. You helped lift me from my depression, it's only right I do the same for you. If we want this relationship to work, we have to support each other. One of us can't do the lifting."

Qibli, once again, remained silent. Mutual support? Such a concept was foreign to him. He gave everything for his friends and family. He was never on the same level as Queen Thorn. He was always there for Winter, for Kinkajou, for Moon. And he always had the thought process was their needs overpowering his.

Nobody ever spelled this out for him.

"I can read your mind now, you know," Moon smiled faintly. "But that's okay. You don't have to say a word. I just want you to acknowledge that I'm here for you. That everyone is here for you. That battle inside you doesn't need to be fought alone."

"But I…" Qibli immediately went to make an excuse. To shove her off. "No, you're right." He admitted quietly.

"I'm not expecting you to come to me immediately. I'm not expecting you to be uncomfortable sharing what you don't want to," Moon continued. "But I will repeat myself as much as I need to for it to sink in."

Qibli's mouth was dry. Throat parched, as if he wandered the desert for a week. He felt tears wanting to come, but they never did. He wasn't holding them back, but part of his mind wouldn't accept it.

"And, when the time comes, I'll help you beat Vulture into the sands. After we shove a cactus up his nose."

Qibli snapped his head to her. Her eyes danced with amusement; a smile plastered on her face. And despite himself, he let out a roaring laugh. The first genuine, heartfelt laugh he had in a while.

"That's so unlike you," he finally said through his laughter.

"I know, but I knew it'd get a reaction," she giggled alongside him.

"I needed that," Qibli wiped away a tear. "Moons, you have no idea how much."

"I think I get an idea," Moon winked, giving him back the Skyfire. "Here. I won't pry anymore."

"No," Qibli pushed her claw away. "Not tonight. Tonight, I want to be open with you."

"Alright," she put the Skyfire on a rock next to them.

"Question…" Qibli whipped his head to the cave entrance. No one was around. "Did you uh… mean what you said about… loving me?"

"Um, yes?" Moon said as if it were obvious. "Why do you think I flew to the desert to meet you? I would never cross such a place for anyone else."

"I suppose I should have known that." Qibli blinked a few times. "Well, uh… I guess I… feel the same?"

"That's a D on the confession scale, but it's still a passing grade," she gave him a loving look, leaning closer.

Their lips connected, and Qibli felt a spark unlike any other. Dragons didn't have proper lips, so it was more or less bumping their muzzles together. Yet, it still felt nice. Well, no, nice was too tame a word. He simply couldn't describe it other than how happy he felt in that moment.

The moment ended too quickly, but at some point, they had to breathe.

"I guess we should head back," Qibli said. "They'll be looking for us."

"True, but we're not exactly hard to find," Moon pointed out. "We have so many dragons here, they'll find us easily. Provided we don't wake up before them."

"We wake up?" Qibli turned his head back to her.

"Do you really think I'm going to let you sleep alone after all this?" Moon scowled, her grip tightening around him. Qibli had been so touch deprived that he almost instinctively pulled away. "No, you're staying with me."

"Oh," Qibli managed to say. "I guess that makes sense."

"You guess?" Moon raised an eyebrow.

"I'm not good at this emotional stuff," Qibli averted his gaze.

"It's okay, neither am I. Truthfully, I am just remembering how such things go from scrolls and making it up as I go."

"Well, you're doing a better job than me," Qibli chuckled.

"Only one way to get better."

Qibli smiled softly. She was right. Once again, he glanced at the cave entrance. Still, no one there. Nevertheless, he raised a wing over the two of them.

After all, the rest of the night was between him and her.

I decided to hop into the world of fan-fiction once again, and did something only the boldest of the bold 'bolds would do:

Yeah, that's right. It's Sunday morning, and I had nothing better to do than see why this site is so beloved/feared, as it would be my first time visiting the site.

The first thing I wanted to do, looking at the search bar curiously, was type in "WIngs of Fire". It's a series that I've been wanting to seriously get into for about two years now, and I have a solid idea of what the first two arcs are about. And yes, before anyone asks, I do ship Quinter. Try to tell me they won't be the cutest frickin' couple.

I'm not gonna get into the plot of the first story I read(Mostly because it's a little too spicy for this blog), but I read one comment that just baffled me.

"I don't even know what to comment anymore, this is like going to Burger King and getting a Big Mac."

I don't know if it's because I'm tired, but that really got me to snicker, so I kept looking for more fics, and I came across this beauty:

And when I tell you, this is one of the funniest things I read, oh. My. Lord.

Okay, right, it's about Qibli and his little squad or whatever(Kinkajou, Turtle and Winter) talking about his favorite pastime or so and such. And, with pride that lions envy, Qibli enthusiastically asks to the Winglet if they're down for a round of Yu-Gi-Oh.

Freaking. Yu-Gi-Oh. Oh, and it's specifically 5D's, if you're curious.

That was already a trip, but Peril's there for some reason, and apparently she's a veteran at the game, and she's talking this and that about how she's gonna "destroy. All of you."

Winter basically got dragged in because his Icewing pride is on the line if he declines, and he saying how he's going to wreck everyone with the power of raw spite.

And now, cut to him catching a "massive L" from KINKAJOU. Of ALL DRAGONS.

KINKAJOU.

Reminder, she was introduced to all of this at the same time Turtle, Winter and all the others were. And she just bodied him, just absolutely whipped and nae-naed all over his whole deck. She did him like Vegito did Super Buu, like how Infinite 100% Deku did Chisaki, like how Ash's Greninja did Sawyer's Sceptile, it was embarrassing.

Qibli tells Winter that he can nope outta this, because he kinda felt bad about how disgusting Kinkajou did him(Laughing at him the entire time as the whole room looked at Winter), but the Icewing says, "No... I will run this back. I swear by your gaudy earring I'll crush Kinkajou beneath my talons. She'll know the meaning of a cold day in hell for her bullshit no-skill deck!!"

I'm laughing like a hyena right now as I write this. Please, I beg you, check out this fic sometime, it'll be the funniest thing you've read all day!

-he's the only sane one in his friend group and real laid-back, a lot like qibli except if he wasn't a gigachad -he's gecko's practical brother and knows how gecko can be nonverbal sometimes and is really jittery so he basically protects gecko all the time and also rambles to him -if ever gecko is scared, he'll hide him in his wing and assess the problem with just an entire dragon hidden beneath him its very straining, but he knows how grateful gecko is -downpour is a lot like a brother figure to him, despite him already having a big brother, kelp, and often manatee will come home with star instead of his brother -he loves to fuck with thunder and if she gets mad at star, he'll try to stop her in any way he can. overprotective mf -he shows star dragon creepypastas -he's an animus and he is so bad at it -really, he hates bliss, but he puts up with them because if downpour fired them as their babysitter the sudden change would freak gecko out -really hates being left out of things -to the point where he poked and prodded bliss for info on his injury so much that he got a face full o vemom -that's what ya get ig -that's an excuse to design a cool ghost form for him like i did thunder -also he's aroace -uncommon manatee w

Let's start with Childe! Its the most resent design released by mod Anenome which I Did alter a tiny bit for my brain thoughts. I based the colors off of their drawing but obv it wasn't perfect. I tried to make the tail get lighter in color but I'm not sure if you can really see it all that well lmao. But!! headcannon time!! for Childe as a hybrid I think he's got cold scales like ice wings but like only barely, but it fucks up with his fire, so instead of being able to make flames the closest he can get is like smoke. So mostly it's an intimidation thing, but even if the smoke is Pretty Hot it doesn't do nearly as much damage as fire. Also! about his gauntlet; it was supposed to be black but I forgot to paint part of it and I had already cleaned my desk and put all my stuff away so I just used a silver colored pencil. It is shiny tho!

Next up! Albedo! He was actually the one i drew last, and it was kind of hard to figure out what little bobble from his og clothes to add. (like how childe has the shoulder cauldron and earring) His main visual characteristics (not lore) to me are his hair, his big boots, and his big Ole coat. None of which dragons really Wear. In the end I gave him his little drawing clipboard and the throat diamond. Also, I think we was probably made with animus magic, and studies it. What happened to his tail? I have no idea, but it probably has something to do with never wanting to hide his imperfections. For the bracelet from Klee, I couldn't decide whether it would be a peice of scrap metal she shaped for him, or a some fireproof fabric, but in the end I never had to decide because you can't see it LMAO. pick your favorite ;)

Now Ganyu! Her little blurb is going to be a bit short, mostly bc she was pretty straight forward to draw and I don't know her well enough to have any headcannons haha. Because I didn't color my sketch of her I couldn't do any horn details to make it look more like Ganyu. I had a similar problem to albedos design, because her notable design thing is just her horns. The bell and the rope on her vision were easy to add as accessories but I'm not sure if they really scream Ganyu.

Zhongli is next! I wanted to give him a nightwing scale pattern but a mudwing body shape to look majestic while giving him little glowing bits thst glow amber. I gave him the shiny scale by the eye to imitate his eyeshadow, and I think he has the power of mind reading but is like, sick of it. So the black part of his earing is the rock that blocks nightwing powers (I can't remember if it has an official name lol) I'm unsure about Anenome's world building for their designs but my thoughts on Archons are either that they are animus for each kingdom and they get their powers how Qibli did from enchanted artifacts (the nosis, the spell would be "whoever holds this gets animus powers" or something) or archons are just leaders, where its no longer a queen only world (or zhongli and venti are just queens, i think they can do it) If the archons are just leaders than animus dragons could be in Khaenri'ah, where they're are killed or cursed by the other dragons for their hubris. OR Celestia is the animus dragons. and how do the Pantala dragons fit in? I have no idea. I'm rambling. this au lives in my head rent free.

Okay last but not least Klee! I added her hat first because she needs it. then I wanted to do her backpack but I hit my first dilemma: dragons don't really wear things on their backs. It inhibits their ability to fly properly. But Klee's comically large backpack is a huge part of her charm for me, so I wanted to add it. I decided on big ole saddle bag type things on her haunches. Okay so, elephant in the room, if you've seen the wings-of-impact post about Kler then you know, she has fire scales! So how can she wear clothes? Well I actually just forgot, but I've decided that Tevat! Pyrrhia is actually cooler and sexier and has fireproof stuff for our resident arsonist. For headcannons, I think she has an unhealthy obsession with those cactus bombs and has to constantly be reminded that she Cannot touch them. She's been trying to make her own bombs with limited success, on account of melting the ingredients and not being allowed near gunpowder.

Convoluted Jade Winglet headcanons?

Noble anon and great friend, I am so glad you asked. This post will probably be long so <3 I'll put a tl;dr at the beginning.

Just a warning, in case someone hasn't read them - this will contain spoilers for the Jade Mountain Arc and Legends: Darkstalker!

TL;DR: The Jade Winglet is composed of multiple reincarnations of the Darkstalker: Legends characters. Moonwatcher is the reincarnation of Clearsight; Turtle is the reincarnation of Fathom; Kinkajou is the reincarnation of Indigo; and Qibli is supposed to be the reincarnation of Darkstalker, but Darkstalker never died.

So, this used to be a big theory of mine when the JM arc was still coming out, but I still cling to it as a headcanon. I just see so many parallels between the characters of these arcs and the Legends: Darkstalker characters. It's been a while since I've actually read those books, but I think my knowledge is still sound enough to write this. If not, who cares, I disregard canon anyway /lh. I am referencing pages on the Wings of Fire wiki pretty frequently as I write this, so props to those guys.

The background. Page 14 of Escaping Peril mentions that SkyWings have specific burial rituals, in hopes that the spirit of the dragon will be free and can be reincarnated into a SkyWing. Though this is FAR from being the definitive canon for dragon afterlife, this is the main jumping point for my reincarnation theories. It appears to be at least accepted in the SkyWing tribe that reincarnation is a thing that can happen to the souls of the departed.

Moonwatcher is the reincarnation of Clearsight. Personally, I always found a lot of similarity in their personalities. With Moonwatcher being the first prophetic (and mind-reading, but Clearsight's thing was prophecy) NightWing in centuries, it seems fitting that this is how Clearsight's spirit would return to the world. Her connection with Darkstalker was not like the one he shared with Clearsight (due to the age gap, ofc, and I am NOT a supporter of shipping the two in ANY capacity), but I felt I drew parallels between Moon's genuine trust in Darkstalker and Clearsight's. If I remember correctly, Darkstalker compared Moon's temperament to that of Clearsight a few times, though I can't be completely sure. Furthermore, Moon's evident involvement in Pantala now gives me more ground to support my funny little headcanon. Clearsight, as the """""""Founder"""""""" of Pantala as we know it, might find her spirit drawn to helping save the broken continent. This idea is also lightly supported by her starting a relationship in canon with Qibli but since I don't really care for that relationship, it's... much more of a backseat thing.

Turtle is the reincarnation of Fathom. After all, the first thing Darkstalker did upon emerging from the mountain was call Turtle by the ancient's name and promptly try to beat him up. That would pretty much confirm that they look super similar. Turtle is, of course, an animus and a member of the royal family--big whoop, that doesn't seem too uncommon in SeaWings. But personality-wise? I'd almost assert they're the exact same. Both fear their own power, both are nervous and easily flustered. And both end up challenging Darkstalker. If the wiki's right, they also go through similar arcs of learning that it's ok for them to be happy.

Kinkajou is the reincarnation of Indigo. This one took me the longest to think of and, yes, it is the biggest stretch. Indigo was a SeaWing, while Kinkajou is a RainWing (although, it appears as though the last known location for Indigo was the Rainforest, so... perhaps not as far-fetched?). But Kinkajou is tough--like when Darkstalker attacked Turtle, she jumped in to save him. And Turtle did have a crush on Kinkajou but that whole agitating love spell thing ruined all chances of that being smiled upon fandom-wise for a loooong time (thanks, Anemone :/). Anyway, Indigo always believed Darkstalker was up to no good, and then Kinkajou was the one who damned him to a fate of being a tiny rainbow hybrid dragonet with a singular fruit.

Originally I was going to say here that Winter is the reincarnation of Arctic, but the more I thought about it, the less it fit and the less I could justify it at all. Seems like Winter is either a different or a new soul, after all. Good for him. Anyway,

Qibli, the one who should have had a used soul. This might sound weird, but bear with me. Qibli was not swayed by Darkstalker's promises, and Darkstalker is known to be viciously manipulative and convincing. Qibli turned Darkstalker down, Qibli stood against some of the best manipulation in dragon history. That's striking to me. Only someone who really knows the tricks would be so resistant, I think. And more than just that, Qibli was GIFTED with wording spells and I vividly recall him constantly wishing he were an animus, as though there was just a part of him he felt was missing. Except there was no animus soul to give him, because Darkstalker never died. And perhaps this was so much for the better. Darkstalker and Qibli are both witty, intelligent, and observant, but Qibli didn't end up with an old, dark soul--there was a new one required for his place, one that was able to survive and stay good-hearted in a place as vicious as the Scorpion Den with dragons as heartless as his relatives. A soul so similar to Darkstalker, yet without the treachery, was a key piece in defeating the ancient evil. Though I do headcanon that, had Darkstalker been killed, Qibli would have been the reincarnation of that soul.

So that's basically it, I think? Feel free to call my bluff or burn my crops for this, but I think it's a fun and neat thing to headcanon and think about based on 1 line of SkyWing culture lore that we got, lol. If you wanna ask questions or discuss, I am totally in.

I know a lot of people HATE the ending of Darkness of Dragons, they HATE Peacemaker, so I thought, why don't I rewrite it?

I'm calling this the Stone Darkstalker AU, read to find out about it!

So, I tried to make it where everyone gangs up on him, he DOES realize what he's done, he DOES recognize that he's a horrible genocidal evil dragon murder machine and he realizes that's all he ever was. But of course, being Darkstalker, he can't accept that; he can fix it with his magic! Right?

Nope!

I tried to make a few of the characters represent his past mistakes obviously.

In this version of DoD, Moon got all the animus dragons together (Turtle, Anemone, and Stonemover) because she herself came to terms that he needed to be stopped, or recognize his faults.

They meet in Stonemover's cave to ask if they could take him to the mountain meeting place. Tsunami was there and was apart of the discussion since, uh, her school was under attack! She's gotta be there! Of course, also, she's had experience, and mentions the Orca statue. Stonemover being under a statue enchantment himself, suggests that they turn Darkstalker into a statue as a failsafe.

The original plot line of the strawberry is still there because they wanted to give Darkstalker a choice; he doesn't DESERVE IT, but being the little empathetic dragonets they are (eye roll) they do it for the sake of justice or something; either way, they know though, that justice would happen.

So yea! They all agree to turn him into a statue, but they didn't... mean for the statue to break like it did.

Also, in this ending, I made an easier way for animus magic to be removed from our main characters! Multi tasking! No more epic powerful animus magic to solve issues instantly!

Will not mention anything about Book 14. You know if you've read it what happens THERE. Just pretend that still happens but it doesn't really do anything since.. yea.
