i always get questions when i do a split gifset, and it's a deceptively simple process so i thought i'd try to show how i do it! i don't know if these types of gifsets have a more universally recognized name, but that's what i call them so that's what i'm going with.

i'm going to write this assuming you have a solid familiarity with photoshop and making gifs, but please feel free to send me an ask if anything is unclear. i use video timeline/smart objects so will be showing that (here's a great general tutorial on giffing with timeline). i will also be talking A LOT about gif dimensions, so first let's briefly go over the limits and theory a little bit.

a 1 column gifset can accommodate gifs 540 pixels wide

2 columns = 268 pixels each with a 4 pixel gutter between

3 columns = 177, 178, 177 pixels with 4 pixel gutters

i'm mostly going to talk about 2 column split gifs here (what i will refer to as 2x1 from now on - 2 across and 1 high), but the process is the same for 3 column (3x1) and so on (1x2, 2x2, etc).

so, why would you even want to make a gifset like this? i mean, let’s face it, generally, bigger is better for gifs on tumblr, and there are obvious incentives to 540 width gifs over 268 or 177/8 width, especially since the upload limit went to 10MB. but even 10MB isn’t much when you’re talking about high quality footage. gif making is a constant balance between quality (whatever that means to you: frame dimensions, sharpening, coloring, etc) and file size. split gifs are a cheat to that limitation >:)

i personally believe an untapped frontier of tumblr gifmaking is playing with dimensions and time. that sentence makes me sound like an old-timey sci-fi villain, but you get the idea: gifmaking is an art and there are many fun and interesting ways of exploring the medium. you can do a lot with 268 pixels! longer frame loops to gif longer scenes unbroken, bolder coloring on a wide shot you don’t want to pare down. and, a shorter x axis means the y axis’s bang goes a lot further on a buck. also just if you have a 2 column set but only 5 gifs so you need to make one take up 2 slots. there's a lot of reasons but the most important one is it's fun :) here are some examples of other split gifs i've made: x, x, x

this isn't so much a limitation, more of a shift in how you think about gifs, but it's important to remember that each gif should ideally be doing something still. when making split gifs, it’s easy to pick a wide scene without thinking about how it’ll be split down the middle, and then you’re left with a lot of something on one side and a lot of incongruous nothing on the other - or you're left with a person cut in half awkwardly in the middle. so while a split gif can still be a whole scene, you shouldn’t ignore the break and what it means to the bigger picture. now this is personal preference, but i like to play with the break and make it a part of the gifset. mirrored movement, subjects trapped on either side but still talking to each other, a bird flying from one side to the other. fun with frames! it can be another way of drawing attention to specific images/moments/feelings happening within the same shot.

SIMPLE SPLIT GIFS

to more narrowly define what i’m calling “simple split gifs,” it’s one set of frames split down the middle into two separate gifs that are meant to play concurrently, side by side.

first thing's first, crop your gif and uncheck delete cropped pixels if it is not already (very important). i'm cropping it to the 1x1 size, in this case 268x350. if you need to see how the full size will look, you can try it out with 536 first. but this one is pretty easy, this is the exact center of the frame (the left boundary of this crop is the center line) and both their heads fit within their respective 1x1 crop.

then color as you normally would. if your scene is very different one side to the other, it might be easier for you to color on a wider crop and then either crop again or copy paste your coloring to the smaller crop version. i do that with the 2x6s, but it's usually not that big a deal to color the 2x1s with just the small crop on your canvas at the time. this scene is very symmetrical, both in movement and colors, so i'm good.

now the fun part! once you've got one side how you want it, save/export as you normally would. at this point i also like to make a mental note of how many frames there are.

so i have 49 frames and it's still only ~3MB! this is just an example that i picked from my rotk fancy set, otherwise i probably would have made this gif longer.

then onto the other side, so i ctrl + z my way back to my smart object video timeline. to get to theoden i just drag and drop the smart object 268 pixels over. since this one is in the exact center of the image, it even helpfully guides me (this can get annoying if you are NOT giffing the center of the image fyi, but you can always manually go pixel by pixel too if you need to with your <- -> keyboard buttons. just always remember where you started and count accurately). i can never move around my smart object without hiding the adjustment layers on top of it, so you'll see me do that in this screen recording.

see how it corrected me when i dragged it a few pixels down by accident, and with all those pink guidelines? sometimes photoshop is good 😌

then make sure you still like the coloring, adjust whatever needs to be adjusted, but watch out! don't make any major changes because it still has to match the other side. and export again.

what we perceive as 1 series of frames chopped down the middle is just 2 separate gifs with the same frame rate. when tumblr loads the images, it will run concurrently in the post (even though it never does in the draft post 🙄). and that's it!

COMPLEX SPLIT GIFS

again i'm making up terms, but i call anything with more than 2 components a complex split gifset. i've tweaked some things in the process as i went along, but this is generally how i did the lotr series. these sets are basically just many split gifs with transitions. and here's where endurance becomes a factor :) there's a lot of prep done blind. but if set up well, it will be fairly easy to pull together by the end.

first i decide on my dimensions, using my upper bounds to determine how big i'm going to go. since lotr has very nice large file sizes, i can go pretty big without sacrificing much in quality. i decided on 3 rows of 350 pixel height gifs and it's worked well for me. that means my biggest gif will have a total height of 1050 pixels - fun! you could also do 8 rows, with two 2x2s or just a series of 2x1s that transition to 1x1s. there really is no limit to this except your imagination and source material.

i cap everything i'm going to use before i even open photoshop, then do all of them at once. uncheck delete cropped pixels, then i make my gifs! this is where i spend 90% of the time on this set. every gif should be the size of the smallest 1x1 gif (268x350 for me). i make all 10 into a fully colored, separate psd. (and then i usually go back through all of them a few times to get the colors to match better 😅) for the bigger ones (2x1: 536x350 and 2x6: 536x1050), i just crop them as if they were 1x1 but always thinking about how they will look when big. this gets tricky when i do the big one :) my lazy workaround for that is to basically make it twice: one cropped as it will be and one full size for me to color. then i copy and paste all the coloring layers onto the small one and voila, i know that the coloring in the upper right slice will also look good on the bottom left slice 1050 pixels away because i saw it on the full size version.

coloring is probably the biggest thing i'm thinking about with this kind of set. the whole idea is that these gifs are using the same colors, more or less, throughout each phase. even with the 1x1s, they're still part of a larger color concept, and they should (🤞) work with each other.

in a pinch, i like to eyedrop a color from one gif and add it as an accent to another. one of my 1x1s had a much more muted color palette originally, but i wanted it to have deeper blues and yellows to complement the 1x1 that would go next to it, so i added some gradients on lower opacity over it, color picked from other gifs i already colored.

i keep my coloring and the smart object in separate folders to help me in the final step of combining everything, and then i trim everything down to my lowest common denominator of frames. you might think you need to keep frames pretty minimal if you're doing 3 phases with transitions like this, but there's more room to work with on a small gif, in terms of file size. i usually do 30-50 frames for each phase, with the assumption that i'll be adding a transition on each side of each gif that will eat up some frames (i usually do 4-6 frame fade transitions). for the rotk set my final frame count was 129 and i never went over 8MB on a gif, so there's plenty of space play around with things :)

and then, combine! whatever order you start with, you are stuck with (unless you're getting even more complicated, but we won't go into that lol). for these sets i go small 1x1 -> medium 2x1 -> big 2x6. i like to think of it in phases from this point on. small is the first phase, then medium, then big. then i put in the fade transitions, chopping up the first phase gif so the last one will fade into it, restarting the whole cycle seamlessly. i'm just doing a quick and dirty fade here, but here's a tutorial if you want more explanation on transitions.

at this point i save this psd as its position, "top left" or whatever (usually it's a psb by this point too 🥲), just in case i need to go back to it. then i export this first gif and move on to the rest.

it's the same concept as a simple split gif: drag and drop the smart object to the new position, but now there are multiple phases to keep track of. folder organization has been key for me to keep everything straight. i move through the gifs in a backwards S, starting with the top left. but you could go any direction, just gotta stick with it and remember your counts. in my case, i'm always thinking of 268 pixels over and, for the 2x6, 350 up/down. it's a tedious process, but it goes quick (apart from waiting for photoshop to load each time you export).

i did this series as a color concept aesthetic kind of thing, so my theory was by using the same-ish colors throughout, that would save me in the end when it came time to export. there's only 256 colors max to work with on a gif, and that's usually what gets me over the 10MB limit. but as i said, i have never even gotten close to the size limit on this series. it's pretty hard to reach the limit on 268 pixels, but not impossible. (i did run into that on the emma set i did, and that was hell. but also not an impossible fix in the end.)

Harvard University has admitted the ugly truth: The left’s long march through its faculty and administration has borne poisonous fruit in the form of blazing Jew-hatred and the overall ruin of its campus climate and curricula.

Don’t take our word for it: Just read the elite Ivy’s own report on the Tentifada that sprang up in support of Hamas after Oct. 7.

The committee tasked with looking into this antisemitic conflagration detailed how over decades what began as a tense, even rancorous zone of disagreement on campus — specifically, over Israel’s efforts to defend itself from terrorist aggression and the national aims of various Palestinian political factions — changed into an “attempt by student activists to drive Israeli students (and Jewish students who feel connected to Israel) out of student life.”

This process was in train well before Oct. 7, and results (to use the words of a faculty member the report cautiously cites) from a“general shift of power from regular faculty and to para-academic administrators” that “has played an outsized role in the politicization and radicalization of academia and its intellectual and reputational decline.”

In short, Harvard has suffered “an ideological effort underway to weaken the post-World War II social consensus that antisemitism is a form of bias” along with “politicized instruction that mainstreams and normalizes” Jew- and Israel-hate (though the school couches this in a dodge: i.e., ��what many Jewish and Israeli students experience as antisemitism and anti-Israeli bias”).

Turns out when you hand the keys to a school over to a cadre of frothy-lipped ideologues, its quality declines.

And it’s not just Jews who suffer: Everyone loses out on the diversity of thought and free exchange of ideas that should characterize life on campus.

Instead of reading the greats or mastering organic chemistry, they get crammed with gutter propaganda and crackpot theory.

That it took a mini-pogrom and months of public scrutiny to get Harvard to admit this glaring fact is beyond insane.

Scathing Harvard reports expose ugly activist culture infecting Ivy League school with antisemitism, Islamophobia

Yet, for all the report’s circumlocutions and efforts to bend over backward for armchair terrorists and the malleable-minded children of the American elite, Harvard has admitted the truth.

Embracing the blood libels of the left around Israel and the academic theories that undergird them and letting radicals abandon teaching for indoctrinating does foundational harm to any university.

Harm that is likely irreparable without (to use a buzzphrase popular among Hamas fellow-travelers) systemic change.

Whether the Trump administration’s rightful cutoff of funding will effect such change is an open question.

But the woke-academic cat is now out of the bag.

And there’s no shoving it back in.

How it works with the job:

So on an operation they can't exactly kiss and tell each other "I love you", and the same thing goes on base since it's fraternization… so they have code words and other stuff!

Since Ghost rarely hydrates because of the mask he has to collect water bottle caps as a "I'm not trying to die of dehydration and I still love you" and gets a kiss from each one of them every night for every cap from a water bottle.

Soap kinda is between gifting grenade pins and just leaning on them. Since he is alredy touch as a person it doesn't look out of place, but leaning in his context is more of a "I know you are solid, I hope you can help me be solid too" rather than just leaning on each of them.

Gaz is a weird one. He has something different for each one of them. He gifts Ghost bullets, sometimes white markers to re-whiten the skeleton fingers on his gloves, and sometimes keeps him steady by grabbing his tac-vest strap and saying close. For Soap it's gifting things like good colouring pencils, brushed, inking pens and other stuff. For price it's about filing the paperwork in record time. Surprisingly it works every time and he get a kiss every time.

Price has to be careful when he gives affection, he is tje captain, he is seen as an estimated figure and the superiors have sharp eyes. Yet if you know where to look you'll notice the hand on Gaz's beack going a little towards his hip, with his leutenant how he brings him food so he doesn't have to show his face in the cantine, for Soap how he lets the rules a little more loose, for Roach how he is always inclined to bending down when he talks to him, almost asking for a kiss. With Nik nobody notices anything, they are usually making out in his room though.

Nik is often overlooked by the superiors, so how he displays affection is a little more obvious. Letting Ghost observe him while he repairs a heli and then hiding inside for a quick kiss, listening to Soap make the weirdest physics calculus he ever heard to explain to him how he could change direction in half a second, helping Gaz program frones and every once in a while steal a kiss, make out on the regular with Price, sharing cool insect facts with Roach and sharing a few cute moments.

Roach is the one that does it the weirdest. He is always near Ghost. You see Ghost alone? No he isn't, Roach is at maximum 50 meters away. Soap is drawing? Roach is hiding behind me drawing a few doodles on the edges of the paper. Gaz is writing a report or doing informatics? He is near him messing around, asking questions (with double meanings obviously) messing with his hair and other stuff. Eating in the chow with Price? They are locking feet under the table. Watching Nik prepare the flight plan? Hugging him from behind.

Still though, his boys like to go all out, it's a plausible way to show their love. Nik likes to give experiences rather than physical items (not like that- get your mind out of the gutter). A helicopter ride to a nice secluded beach is probably the most likely. Both Gaz and Soap like giving joke items. I think the "BLOWJOB QUEEN" ashtray is one of their favorites but they try to improve every year. Ghost likes giving him things he'll know Price will use. Refill of cigars, some nice alcohol, ect. Roach likes to give quality time. Even if it's quiet, he just wants to be around his captain. Bruv spends Price's birthday glued to his side. Or thigh. Or back. Or-

No one knows Nik's birthday :( they do like to help him with stuff tho! Extra hands to help with bird maintenance. That, or maybe the gift of trying a new thing in bed ;)

Ghost-

Another birthday hater. Honestly, the best gift for him? Ignoring the date. He'll be much happier just going about it like a normal day, maybe with a few extra cuddles behind closed doors. Pls give him gifts all year long, not just on his birthday.

Gaz-

Price gives him less paperwork, Ghost takes over recruit training, Nik lets him crash in the garage, ect. Those three show their birthday affection by making his life easier. Soap and Roach though? They're dragging him out for drinks, almost definitely ending in a threesome. They're also all Sargent's together so the fraternization is a bit less of a threat.

Soap-

He. Gets. SO. MANY. Art. Supplies. Everyone gives him stuff for art. Brushes, sketchbooks, pens, fancy pencils, they all give him art supplies. (And a few gag gifts)

Roach-

Roach gets experiences. I think I mentioned this in a different post (I cannot think of which one) but for his birthday, Ghost took him to a closet. It's basically just a day for everyone to give into bug-boys weird demands. Also snacks. So many snacks. I would normally say more skincare products to help with his burns, but they literally give him that kinda stuff all year. So yeah, really it's a day of chaotic Roach demands being met.

Aiden fell first and Ash fell harder. But they are both horrendously down bad for each other 🫠

2. Who is the one who fusses the most? Does their partner mind very much?

They're both kinda fussy in different ways, but Aiden is the one getting hurt more often so Ash is fussing the most. Not that Aiden minds he eats that shit up.

3. What is their love language?

I think I mentioned Ash's is quality time and for Aiden it's physical touch :>

4. Has either ever gotten a hickey off the other? What was their reaction?

I've gotten a hickey from somebody biting me (IN A PLAYFUL WAY get your minds outta the gutter 🤡) so I feel like Ash would get one in the same way?? Like. Aiden just bit her cheek or smth. Cuz he's bitey. And it left a mark. She was really pissed about it 😭 like "Ow wtf man-!"

5. What is something they like to do together?

Oh, they're not picky...Aiden likes doing everything with Ash so he lets her pick. Ash likes doing something calm because she likes seeing him more low energy and relaxed like binging a show or doing a puzzle. If he leans on her she's done. She gone fr.

Aiden would but just for fun and to not repeat myself lets imagine Ash asking 🤡 lowkey would be embarrassed and ask in the tiniest voice ever. Aiden ofc think this is adorable and tells her in great detail how he would get her a huge terrarium with the finest dirt and lots of food and Ash is just staring at him wondering why he put so much thought into it.

Aiden steals the seat, makes a joke about how Ash can sit on his lap, Ash says she would literally rather sit on the floor, Aiden gives up the seat all pouty, then his restless ass spends the rest of the time finding a comfy spot before sitting on the armrest.

10. Who plays with whose hair?

Aiden 1000000% because he's obsessed with it. In the beginning Ash would pinch him whenever he did it, but after he started braiding her hair it didn't bother her as much. Likes fiddling with the tips or whipping the braid around like some weird ass stim toy lol 🤡

11. Who is clingy?

I think they both are in different ways...Aiden more tho, and he's more obvious about it 💀

12. What is something the other does that makes them flustered?

They're both idiots so they get flustered whenever they're soft with each other 🫠 for Ash, the aforementioned forehead kiss + Aiden praising her, and for Aiden it's whenever Ash touches his face really softly or initiates snuggling.

13. What is something they find attractive about each other?

Guessing this means physically?

Aiden: Her freckles. Or her hair. Or her eyes. Don't make him pick 🤡

Aiden isn't big on fighting in gen, he doesn't have the motivation for it. Ash usually just scolds him for his piss poor self preservation skills and he'll sulk about it. Not above picking a fight about smth stupid if it gets her attention tho

Depends what is bothering them. Aiden usually goes for a hug if she allows it and tries to talk to her. Aiden usually prefers being alone if he feels like he's gonna get upset so it's a little hard for Ashlyn to help him, but normally tries to reassure him that she's not leaving, or holds his hands or face to help ground him. She's a very logical person so she tries to think of ways to solve a person's problem if they're upset, but most of aidens problems are internal/emotional.

16. Who is the better caretaker? Does their partner like being taken care of?

Aiden is better with physical injuries because...he's had them all before multiple times and he knows what to do haha. Ash appreciates the help but I wouldn't say she enjoys it. Ash is better with illnesses, which is great because Aiden acts like he's literally dying whenever he gets a cold (forcing him to spend all day In bed?? Just give him a death sentence while you're at it), so yeah he's a little baby that likes being taken care of.

Most of Ash's clothes don't really fit Aiden...Ash steals his jackets/hoodies on accident because Aiden will give them to her (she gets cold easy) and she forgets to give them back (she's also a little weird about it and sleeps with them). He lowkey gets kinda smug when he sees her wearing them lol

Like...the care tire blew out? Ash would probably change it (her parents taught her) and while she's at it she'd show Aiden how to do it too (he's never learned)

Neither of them are afraid of bugs BUT Ash does not like insects partly because she doesn't know how they'll react to smth. Logically tho she knows spiders are useful so she asks Aiden to get a cup and throw them outside.

Depends on the kind, Aiden definitely seeks out Ash's attention more often (like asking her if she wanted to do the puzzle), but he's a little nervous about physical affection, so in the beginning of the relationship that was Ash. Now that he knows it's usually okay he is more touchy, but now Ash looks for his company more often so she will start conversations.

Ashlyn: above all, his own self apathy. She is...really not cool with him hurting himself all the time. She also thinks he's way too impulsive and irresponsible sometimes

Aiden: don't ask him! But sometimes he thinks she's very...cold. and it hurts his feelings.

Aiden, they were already together so he thought he should let her know :P

Pffffff. Aiden definitely. Ash usually doesn't really notice ("he's acting weird...well, he's always weird") unless somebody points it out. She's very pragmatic about it, she just bluntly tells him he's being stupid and that she's not interested in anybody else.

Ash is designated driver because Aiden is an absolute maniac on the road (even tho he says he's a fine driver) and they have a GPS because Aiden gets to distracted to navigate 💀

I think in canon, and even in this theoretical relationship, they're a bit away from being totally open with each other. But they do trust each other.

Aiden's BPD, even after everything, will flare up and he thinks Ash will leave him, especially cuz he's so "annoying and pushy", etc etc. This kinda bleeds into Ash's issue, which is the fact that she's putting so much into this relationship and she still feels like Aiden doesn't really trust her.

Ashlyn: she says Aiden is like a kid, because to cheer him up she just has to hold him. A long cuddle session is in order, and some kisses for good measure :> Then she'll offer to go out tomorrow to do smth fun.

Aiden: she's probably overstimulted and exhausted, so he basically preps her/their room so she can relax to the fullest and does all the chores so she won't need to do anything. Orders takeout/goes to the drive-through so she doesn't need to socialize.

Ashlyn: weirdo adrenaline junkie who doesn't know when to quit...and an idiot. He's still HER idiot tho.

Aiden: his guardian angel, bless her, because he must give her a heart attack per day at least.

Ash doesn't have any exes which is great because Aiden would probably be jealous of that too 🫠 Aiden doesn't have any like, real proper exes either. I guess she would be a little curious about his past relationships tho, just because he doesn't talk about them.

For Aiden, if she couldnt take him anymore...and for Ash, it kinda breaks her heart everyday that Aiden still thinks she'd leave him behind :")

I feel like they would binge watch a reality TV dance competition show or smth along those lines. Order a bunch of junk food, top it off with ice cream...Ash would probably fall asleep on him at like 1am and Aiden would fall asleep a little bit later because he sleeps easier with her next to him :)

They both dance!!! Ash is, ofc, an excellent ballerina and she knows some ballroom dancing. Aiden is better at freestyle and stuff like that, but Ash is better on a technical level.

Ash: for him to leave her alone and to not talk to her again.

Aiden is like a human garbage disposal, he eats the worse trash food humanely possible (and somehow is still not sick); his diet is basically fast food joints, convenience store snacks, and soda 💀 So Ash eats healthier... BUT Ash is the one with a sweet tooth. She really likes stuff like cookies, cakes, and chocolate. Aiden prefers salty and savory snacks (tho he does like candy, ex. gummy worms or lollipops, stuff like that)

Ashlyn: Video games. In general she finds them kinda stressful and loud, but she watches him play for fun (especially horror games)

Aiden: ballet shows. He ADORES watching her dance but like if she's not on stage he's not gonna be into it...

Aiden absolutely spoils Ash, he has cash to burn, so why not on things she wants? :) lowkey Ash finds this a little weird, especially if he gets something really expensive (like this espresso machine he got her one Christmas) but she doesn't really have the heart to complain besides a "You don't need to spend so much on me..."

Ha 💀 Ash genuinely does her best to be level-headed...but deep down they're both feral.

Well, Aiden doesn't really have a problem with it, but Ash is a little reluctant because it tends to draw unnecessary attention to herself and she does not like. Being perceived.

Ash: semi-regular thing she deals with as an adult. He is usually a reckless drunk person so she tends to redirect his attention towards herself (so he will shift into flirty drunk mode lol) and hopes he'll fall asleep soon :p

Aiden: he'd get upset because Ash would never willingly drink enough to get tipsy- lowkey his first thought is that somebody drugged her 🤡 (Ash probably just didn't notice her own limits) she's a pretty quiet drunk tho so she won't cause him too much trouble. Okay, so...like...it's not like Aiden goes for expensive gifts just cuz they're expensive, it's just like. Sometimes he just so happens to get something that is expensive for her! Ash is always kinda nervous about gift shopping because she feels a little...apprehensive about buying people stuff...but she's not bad at it, it just takes her a while.

Idk I feel like they're not big on flowers. Ash doesn't want smth that's gonna die in a few weeks- I feel like the only time they'd give each other flowers is if they were chilling in a meadow or smth. I think Aiden puts daisies in her braids.

Aiden isn't big on reading- Not that Ash is either, but she'll skim the paper and give Aiden the funny strips.

PR's Bio (TW: Character death, unhealthy coping mechanisms, mentioned drug use) This is a LONG text...

History: In PR's world power is everything, you take what you want and protect your own. With the barrier in place the King ordered all efforts focus on boost up military efforts and redirection of resources to the capital. This order was intended for the short term but due to the trouble the scientist had with breaking the barrier it dragged on and the citizens have suffered for it. There are issues with the quality of life monsters turned on each other other, everyone is out for themselves. It is worse for those outside the capital walls. Where there is even less to fight for, this cause a culture shift, the further from the capital you are, the more 'barbaric' the monster was. That is were PR raised up, his earliest memories are of him and his Sans living in Snowdin. Tired of this life, wanting more, frustrated of relying on his brother, PR enlisted in the guard. Despite his brother's protests and the having deal with harassment from the other guards, PR rose above it all and became a Royal Guardsmen, working under Undyne herself. Being able to rise above the challenges and his efforts recognized, PR leaned into his new life. It became less of finding a better life for him and his brother and now a need to prove himself. Resenting who he was and where he was, it caused a lot of tension and fights between the brothers, as he saw his brother as content and lazy living around 'lesser monsters'. He began to lean more on Undyne who seemed to be the one who could understand him and was showing up more. One night PR let it mention that he was to be in the capital the next day, and when his brother went to say something PR snapped pouring all his frustrations before leaving. Go where people appreciated him. The next day he was patrolling around the Capital when he notice a protest, people upset with how the King was ruling. What started peaceful quickly escalated. PR doesn't know when it became a riot but when he was called in he came in to enforce the peace. In the middle of the fight he realized that he found his brother in the crowd. He rushed over to demand why he was here. It was around then the King showed up and the crowd had be subdued. PR's question was answered by King Asgore himself, Sans had been a leader of the opposition. Who they were keeping tabs on through PR's vents to Captain Undyne, they knew he would be here if his brother was, and this was a moment to take him out. Before PR could protest Asgore took out Sans who moved to protect him. As PR rose to avenge him Asgore swung at him with his trident downing him. Without looking at the dusting Asgore left the area to return to his duties. PR was not dusted, he woke up later, his skull cracked and his brother's dust in front of him. He gathered what he could in a pouch he now wears around his neck to keep him near, and fled the capital. For the next few years PR returned to their home in Snowdin, disgraced he did whatever he could to numb himself. Eating hallucinogenic spider treats, drinking, smoking, fighting, waking up in the gutter more times he could count. It was a blur but he gained a reputation of being dangerous and a sorta unoffical leader of Snowdin, more like he would settle the fights- or his reputation scared others off. (Not that he was taking responsibilities..) One day there was reports some townsfolk saw PR stumbling into the basement of his house and was gone for days. Just as people started to wonder if he had died he reappeared, sober and with a tiny skeleton that resembled his late brother.... Notes:

He is a big patron of both Muffet and Grillby for their stronger stuff. He delays payment for Muffet because it is funny and he has a death wish.

With Dakota he is extra protective, believing the kid can't fight a wet paper bag. Has been trying to teach Dakota how to defend but they have magic his bro did that he does not.

Teleporting makes him ill.

He has a weird habit of falling asleep in places you do not expect. Sometimes Dakota really has to look to hunt him down.

Dakota will never replace his sans, no sans will, but watching over the kid he feels he is doing right by him.

That being said he has a problem being soft on other sans he comes across, whether if they come to his AU or Dakota fucked up and landed them else where.

What does social combat actually look like in-game? Do I announce to the ST that I want to insult the harpy, roll Charisma + Etiquette and follow up with an IC response of matching quality? Do I just say stuff IC and then roll to figure out how the NPC reacts? And how do I deal with attacks on player characters? Do I just let the harpy roll to intimidate the player character? How much agency do I give the player, should they be successful?

At first, this question baffled me. I mean, it's just like combat. You say what you want to achieve, roll a bunch of dice, I roll a bunch of dice, we narrate something that reflects those dice rolls.

I suppose the problem is people are really used to "just roleplaying" the social stuff - the rules are for the things you can't pretend your way through. Or they're used to role-then-roll, where you improv-theatre your way through a conversation, and either the Storyteller says you don't need to roll because you've amused them, or the dice say you fail no matter how amazing your roleplaying was, or maybe you actually succeed. That's two potential fail states, if you're counting, and that's assuming you're any good at the improv theatre bit, or aren't playing a character who's more socially adept than you are.

Tangent: ever notice how it's perfectly fine to play a character who's more physically adept than you are, because we have tons of rules for that and we don't generally get up and spar during the session? and it's usually okay to play a character who's more mentally adept than you are, unless your ST is seriously into that "player skill not character stats" mindset that I think of as more of an oldschool D&D thing. It's the poor buggers who want to play social-prime characters as their power fantasy who are told "nope, shape up or ship out, no dice for you."

Anyway, here's how social conflict works in my games.

Generally, it's initiated by a player, who wants their character to achieve something that an SPC doesn't want them to achieve. I fall back on social conflict rules because - well, I share information and try to oblige people, it's how we learn and get things done, and I struggle with the idea that people wouldn't default to doing that. So I need a mechanic for SPCs who aren't going to say yes in improv, as it were.

So I'll say something like "this sounds like you want to initiate social conflict - what does a win look like for you, here?" so everyone involved knows what we're aiming towards. Then we roll, with my usual eccentric approach to dice pools (I got a Charisma + Investigation out the other day, very pleased with that). Because Requiem is always lurking in the back of my head, I usually think of the attribute grid as horizontally split between power, finesse and endurance attributes - so if your character's turning on the raw charm you're probably using Charisma as your base, whereas if they're trying to outwit or ensnare the other party you'll be on Manipulation, and if you're just sticking to your guns and refusing to take no for an answer, that'll be Composure, or maybe Resolve.

Doesn't have to be a social stat, either. Strength plus Persuasion or Intimidation is a classic - that's either implying someone's gonna get beat down, or expressing physical actions with social conflict rules because the outcome is "SPC spills the beans" rather than "SPC is looking for their teeth in the gutter."

Anyway, we put our dice pool together, and it's usually going to involve Etiquette, Intimidation, Leadership, Persuasion or Subterfuge, maybe Investigation - or maybe we'll switch into that in later rounds.

Now we know who's going to come off better in the first exchange, and who's going to take Willpower damage, so we know how to target our roleplay - thus we avoid the "OK that was a great speech but you rolled a 2 on your Bluff check" fail state.

Once we've reached a point in that roleplayed conversation where someone's shown that their character's on the back foot, or wants to make a comeback, we roll again, and then roleplay for a bit longer. Sometimes I might change the dice pools if it feels like the characters have shifted their approach.

I don't formally use the Doors system from Requiem because it's a little bit dry and over-detailed for my taste, but I am often thinking in terms of "your first roll is getting someone to talk at all, your second roll is getting them to talk about what you want them to, and your third roll is getting them to tell you what you need to know."

And then we might do that one more time, unless someone's racking up the aggravated Willpower damage. Once the Willpower tracker is full and we're looping back around, that's normally what "defeat" looks like. Aggravated Willpower damage is no joke to "heal" and that's usually when a player will want to tap out. In the social context this represents a serious loss of face or equilibrium - you realise you're not going to win this argument, you say something that dramatically alienates the other party, or you simply give up under pressure and reveal whatever it is you're trying to conceal.

There's another layer on top of this: Disciplines. I often use social combat when social Disciplines are in play. I think this rewards the people who've gone deep into Presence, or who've picked the willpower-damaging track in Oblivion, or who took Dementation or Scry the Soul. It lets them feel powerful, and describe their characters doing dark and powerful things. It also makes other vampires, especially elders, feel powerful, when I can say "all right, opposed roll, now he's got Fortify the Inner Facade so that's twelve dice, shall I Rouse I wonder?" Using social conflict in these moments reifies the soft power vampires have over mortals, and each other.

It's also a lot "fairer" to telegraph that this is a conflict situation, with Disciplines involved, rather than asking a player to make a resistance roll against Entrancement out of the blue. Social conflict smooths those situations, showing the player that there are rules here, not rails.

Ah, there's the fucker. "Hey, Raffles! I've got beef with you!" Now, strolling up to a scary fell dragon is not something she would usually be all gung-ho about doing, but she had a feeling she was...relatively safe in doing so. Trusting in the Alfred who trusts in her, or whatever. Even if she definitely still thought Alfred was way too open and eager with that. Still, she slides up with all the confidence in the world, hands on her hips, and grins at him like he can't turn into a huge ass dragon that could maybe eat her. "So, you're Alfred's new bestie that I've been hearing so much about." Bestie. Right. "Weeeell, as his other bestie, it only seems right that we get to know each other, yeah?" This is the part she's...way less confident about, but she moves to Rafal's side and links and arm with him. As casually as she can, she pulls on his arm until he leans down and she can casually whisper to him. "You're not as trusting as everyone else to think there's nothing suspicious about those organizers, right?"

'Other bestie?' Near imperceptible but telling all the same, a stormy and involuntary twitch in the dragon's brow. Bombarded with presumptions by one who proclaimed to know him in spite of heinously bastardizing his name; Alfred alongside, regardless the fact he'd never seen this stranger in proximity to the prince. Thirdly and finally topped by the bold proposal to 'get to know each other' without so much as a proper greeting. Base curiosity had no choice but to evolve into outright suspicion.

"You proclaim to be friend to the Firenese prince. Now you wish to know me better while misconstruing my name." Arms locked tightly across chest. If a stare could kill surely this one would find leaping rates of success. "If such behavior encompasses the human vice of swindling for money, then look elsewhere. I don't have any."

Riches Rafal did not have, but sense he most certainly did. His forbidding glare would recede in stages, thunderclouds dissipating, then parted to completion onto a glade of understanding. Such over familiar precursor had been ruse, insurance for the very next question. Equipped with Rafal's ready answer at that.

"Naturally. Only a fool totally bereft of all four senses would miss the trove of suspicious qualities strewn everywhere. Organizers in masks. Unspoken motives. The sensation of being watched. Anyone can suspect there is more to this scene than meets the eye." She had come to him in obvious search of assurance and like minds. Like thoughts. Would his response then be her coveted light at the end of the tunnel? No, far crueler; her hope dangled and snuffed in orderly succession.

". . .But frankly, it pertains little to me."

His patience guttered like a dying flame, or perhaps it was the Fell Heir's trust that hadn't been kindled to begin with. No eager peddler of secrets to those little known, a single effortless tug of draconic might dislodged her grip and with a prim flick of heel that dragon started on his way.

Man its been so long since ive commented on a fic, but damn. At first, i mostly read the fh and scarian TTSBC fics but ive honestly gotten so damn invested in all the characters and their storylines.

Ive never been interested in treebark as a ship before, and honestly this fic (and the others in this series) truly made me reconsider. i still dont think ill go out looking for more treebark fics, but the ones you post are an exception. honest to god, yours is the only series that has gotten me really invested in naturewives, soupgroup, treebark, zedango, papa pix' & his lil fam, and doc/etho. if that doesnt say something about the writing quality of your work, i dont know what does.

The rest of the 'undercity hooligan' friend group, huh? They're a mixed bag, a lot of them do have parents/families, some of them are raised within a clan system that's unique to the under-city or their subspecies, we will get into their individual upbringings as we get to know them all better and worldbuild out the undercity!

As far as the orphanage thing, there is still the wardship program through the undercity lab! Except now that it's under Doc's leadership, it's actually doing what it should've always been doing, which is taking in/supporting/educating abandoned/orphaned kids...that doesn't mean there aren't still a lot of gutter rats, and the labs can't support them all or even manage to round all of them up...it's still pretty rough. As we keep saying, the undercity has claws, and just because the labs are under better leadership doesn't mean everything has changed. 😓

I think Tango is little too busy spontaneously combusting over his new texting buddy Zedaph to consider adaption at this point. Fwhip is still a loose cannon working for the mafia so who knows what he's thinking 😆

Cervinus Wildspace

Past the heady days of world and sphere defining empires, this star hosts the 3 primary life bearing planets of the Sphere. By weight of population and matured biospheres, they tend to have the most influence and economic might. None are fully unified, but they have significant polities that can project power beyond their atmospheres. Trade in organics, food, high quality magical items are all centered around these worlds. The balance of power between the inhabited worlds and their leading nations is sometimes delicate, but tends to keep most serious conflict in the realm of political intrigue and saber rattling, rather than outright war. The major powers each have some modest fleets of military and courier spelljammers for defense and surveying work, with a varying mix of private and mercantile traffic tying them together. While they have a number of outposts and asteroid/lunar settlements, none have much control beyond their orbital volumes.

Stellar Objects:

Cervinus: Typical orange star, Cervinus is the center of this part of Triadspace, around which 10 worlds orbit in steady clockwise rotations.

Elysium: Earth type, Size D, very hot, millions of inhabitants, Tomb World, Altered Humanity (undead)

The Workings that once made this world an eternal summer paradise of endless farms, gardens and noble estates have long since guttered out. What remains now are creeping wastes and deserts, the bones of dead cities swathed in desiccated vegetation clawing at a sweltering sky. Worse yet, the world swarms with undead of all kinds. The cause of such a large scale infestation is unclear, nor is the reason they survive such close proximity to their star. Few scholars have the fortitude to try and uncover the secrets of this world, but there is a persistent trickle of adventuring types who try to brave the harsh surface for a chance at recovering lost wealth, artifacts and other valuables. Spelljamming crews often tell tales warning of getting too close to this planet sized tomb, cautioning that ghost ships still patrol its moribund orbit, flying ancient battle-flags long bleached bone-white.

Anahita: Earth type, Size D, 2 moons, Millions, Ancient Archive, Great Work

Once home to grand research campuses and the collected wisdom of the Sphere, it has long been said that the answer to any question worth asking could be found within the halls of Anahita. The population of this once grand world has dwindled in size and their ability to maintain the knowledge they have inherited. The centuries since the start of the Interregnum have seen the slow retreat of the population to the most important civic centers, leaving abandoned libraries and crumbling halls slowly being reclaimed by the wilds. The magocratic nobility have long since hoarded their fragmented knowledge, leaving critical Workings in disrepair. Some however, seek to reverse this trend, to reclaim lost knowledge and share it freely with the Sphere, and possibly beyond. The Prometheans, as they call themselves, are working to convert a captured asteroid into a spelljamming laboratory, archive and city all in one, some even dreaming of a fleet of such archives sailing the Phlogiston and bringing the light of knowledge to all.

Agathos: Earth type, Size F, 1 moon and a ring of asteroids, Hundreds of Millions, Restrictive Laws, Psionics/Magic Fear

Luddites but for magic. Powerful agrarian culture, breadbasket for the system and they know it.

For centuries the world of Agathos has been lush with the hard earned produce of the land. While very large for an earth class world, the world is not dense and lacks much in the way of tectonic or volcanic activity. Combined with the warm climate, the world is phenomenally agriculturally productive. Relatively few major population centers exist, typically built around a trade nexus, a culturally important site, or a major seat of the nobility. They serve as a major breadbasket for much of the Cervinus system and for the Sphere as a whole.

Cobano: Earth type, Size E, Asteroid belt, colder than normal, Hundreds of Millions, Tyranny, Starforged population

Cobano stands ringed by an asteroid belt, once rich with ores that fueled the expansion and development of the greatest works of the Threefold Empire. Many of the mines have long since been replaced by forges, testing grounds, shipyards, and orbital citadels built using similar techniques used to build traditional dwarven sky-holds. Modern Cobanan nobility holds sway over industrial and trade centers, guild and merchant house having merged with noble family structures over the centuries. The dense population relative to the other Cervinian worlds is in part due to the large population of Starforged automata that serve as the backbone of industrial labor. Strict management of their populations are maintained by the noble class, both to prevent overuse of the expensive materials and magics needed to forge individual units, and to prevent unrest from taking root.

Ilmarinen: Earth type, Size G, water ice ring, Hundreds of thousands, Gold Rush, Refugees

Settlements among the iceteroids, former spacefaring refugee culture formed during the Interregnum that has recently started to put down roots. Rich deposits of [SOMETHING] they have begun to exploit and ship out. Lots of potential for infighting and outsiders muscling in on their new territory.

Alaz, Fire type, Size G, belt, Vacuum (toxic air), none

Not a habitable body, this world is a swirling mix of toxic gases that often combust, putting off quite a bit of heat if one dares to come too close. With no appreciable moons, no easy to exploit resources, and with no land to settle, Alaz does not bring much traffic. The sole exception to this can be found in the lizardfolk of the Cervinus system, who use its tamer and more accessible orbit for their brood-barques. Such flotillas are heavily guarded, though the confluence of lizardfolk clans often leads to trade between the attendant clans and enterprising outsiders, as the heavy patrols serve to discourage otherwise enterprising pirates.

Nammu, Water type, Size C, asteroids in orbit, Millions, Societal Despair, Irradiated world

A small poisoned water world, this planet is home to a slowly dwindling population. It never quite recovered from the decline of the Threefold Empire. The cause of the poisoning of the seas in recent centuries is not certain, but is thought to be magical in nature. The declining population, combined with squabbling and petty wars between noble houses has made for a grim, dying world.

Volos: Earth type, Size F, Spherical, earthen rings, Several Million, Arcane Consulate, Growing Eidolon

Volos is a frozen super-earth world, massive, barren and cold. The world is valuable and settled not on the rocky surface, but in its orbit. The rings around it, likely the remains of a shattered moon, are host to multiple massive asteroids that border on dwarf planets at the largest. The greatest of these, Volos Prime, is host to an Arcane Consulate, and thus attracts much traffic and trade. It serves as a small but independent center of trade and power within the system, and the rings have grown to be populated with many small outposts and settlements that provide services to the consulate, from hollowed out farming or water harvesting asteroids, to mercenary star-forts offering patrol services, to the occasional dwarfhold offering to trade manufactured goods. Merchant convoys (and thus sky-pirates) are a common sight among the rings. Imported or farmed lumber and forged metals feed the shipyards of Volos Prime, making it quite easy, or at least reasonably affordable, to source common spelljammer designs.

Cardea, Air type, Size G, 4 moons Fewer than a million, Storm-Wracked, Floating Islands

Cardea is a distant sparsely populated world. A gas giant that sits quite far from the center of the system, it serves as a valuable stopping point for ships emerging from the Flow. The air is breathable, allowing for refreshing of their air envelopes. A handful of settlements exist on their storm-wracked islands, serving as rest stops and trade posts. Piracy is a concern, and the local militias are often in need of assistance in one form or another.

Chione: Water type, Size F, earthen rings between 1 and 2 million, Quarantined, Secret Masters

Officially not settled, Chione is technically a water world. However, far from the warmth of Cervinus the frozen crust of thick ice prevents easy settlement, though a handful are known to exist built into mountaintops. It is also known that there are a number of settlements that dot the asteroid belt, though no official census exists. It is suspected that these are havens for pirates, criminals and those that wish to disappear from the system at large. Far fetched and often whispered tales speak of some grand conspiracy that uses these supposed outposts to coordinate some task, though what that task may be varies with the teller and the strength of their drink.
