Upon reflecting this past year, I’m reminded of one area as a fandom citizen that i am lacking - reading fic. And so was born an idea to canvas my fandom family and friends to share with me a fic they've written, art they've created, a podfic they've recorded in 2023 of which they are most proud.

This two part 'rec yourself' list is the result.

Part One features Drarry creations (heavily featured since that's my OTP). Part Two (here) includes a kick-ass mix of various HP ships and ships from other fandoms, including Carry On, Check Please!, Good Omens, Teen Wolf, and Stranger Things. Also, and most importantly, each entry presents a smol blurb from the creator about why they chose their particular piece as their 2023 favorite.

For ease in reading, I've also placed all submitted works posted to AO3 into a filterable bookmark collection, Rec Yourself 2023. Be aware that there's a range of ratings and archive/creator tags, so please, take appropriate responsibility for your personal consumption. And please also be sure to shower the creators with kudos and lovely comments.

✩ @pato-roldnart ✩ Quiet as a mouse HP | Viktor Krum x Ron Weasely | ART | G rating | Unleashed!Fest 2023 I'm quite proud of this one, I don't know how I made it, I had never drawn them before! My mind went full "oh yeah ronvik " Also, I like the idea of them bonding over their pets and Ron seeing that Viktor cares about something else that is not Quidditch.

✩ @tontonguetonks ✩ Coffee and a Croissant HP Next Gen | Scorpius x Albus | 903 FIC | G rating There are parts of myself and my lived experience in every story and character I write—how I socialize, how I take my coffee… I can’t help it. In *Coffee and a Croissant*, I put a lot of myself in my ace and autistic Albus. He is very dear to me in this story, and in my Fizzy Lifting Drinks drabble. The fic is just a toe-dip in the Soulmate waters where Albus grapples with what to do if he is someone’s Soulmate, but they’re not his. Parts 2 and 3 are in the works, but there is no timeline on either of them. Maybe in 2024?

✩ @crazybutgood ✩ I Bloom Pink For You HP | Narcissa Malfoy x Pansy Parkinson | 993 FIC + ORIGAMI COMIC | M rating | HP Bodice Ripper Fest 2023 This whole idea came about because I got so excited to fold a corset for hp bodice ripper fest, realised I couldn't just submit that one thing, and started brainstorming more loose ideas. It all clicked together when I was inspired by a fic by @schmem14, whose writing I adore. I was so grateful and even more excited when Em gave permission to make this. From there started the self-indulgent process of folding fancy things with fancier papers for this origami comic, and I couldn't have done it without Em and my lovely support team.

✩ @seekercass ✩ Something Cosmic HP | Cedric x Draco x Harry | 1.7k FIC | M rating | Polyship Week 2022 A self-rec that I am still extremely proud of is a short fic written for Polyshipping Week 2022 called Something Cosmic. It's a small coda to Something Good to Always Keep, another fic that I wrote for Quidditch Fest 2021 that I cherish very much. Even though writing is still hard for me these days, I often think about this 'verse and what life is like for Harry, Draco and Cedric after they graduated from Oxford. These three and slice of life bring me such joy. I hope to write more of them.

✩ @roseharpermaxwell ✩ Sounds Worth It HP | Hermione x Draco | 5k FIC | T rating | D/Hr Advent 2023 Being nominated for d/hr advent was a sweet surprise. It gave me a good excuse to remember how to write and the nudge I needed to create something this year.

✩ @basicallyahedgehog ✩ (They) Keep Me Warm HP | Hermione x Harry x Ron | 5.8k FIC | E rating | HP Trans Fest 2023 This was my transfest fic - I wrote it as a love letter to all my trans and Enby friends and as a way of processing some of my own feelings. It’s my first (and so far only) foray into poly golden trio and I loved playing with their dynamics with that added layer to their relationship.

✩ @lumosatnight ✩ For I Have Found Salvation HP | Harry x Severus | 7.1k FIC | E rating | Snarry AUctoberfest 2023 Although this is a smut fic at its core, I tried really hard to make the pacing flow, bringing in background characters, and creating memorable imagery. I am very proud of how it turned out. However, this is probably my favorite fic from 2023 simply for the fact that I had the most fun writing it!

✩ @sugareey-makes-stuff ✩ Feel You Breathing Teen Wolf | Derek Hale x Stiles Stilinski | 8.4k TEXTING FIC | E rating | 2023 Year of the OTP This is my fav 2023 piece because I learned how to create a custom text message AO3 skin, stylize things for plain text reading, and I wrote a whole story  that had some plot that was told through text messages. Also, I did not know I could achieve so much spiciness and throw in so many bad pick-up lines through this medium, but hey, the more you know! XD

✩ @schmem14 ✩ Mastermind HP | Harry x Ron; Draco x Harry; Ron x Draco | 10.7k FIC | E rating | Dronarry Fest 2023 This is one of the few times a story just flew out of me. Possessive stalker Draco sets out to win over Ron in this creepy thriller, but there’s a catch: Ron is already in love with Draco’s boyfriend, Harry.

✩ @drwhoisginnyholmes & @fledglinger ✩ Not Bad, For A 6000 Year Old Classic! Good Omens | Aziraphale x Crowley | 11.8k FIC + ART | E rating | DIWS Reverse! Reverse! Mini Bang

✩ @sniperjade ✩ The Sounds of Us HP Marauders | Regulus x Remus | 20.4k FIC | M rating | Remus Lupin Fest 2023; HPFC Spring Fling 2023 I've been thinking about this for a couple of days and whilst I would really love to say it was the drarry I wrote for this fest last year my favourite would have to be this moonseeker I wrote for Remus Lupin Fest last year. It's my favourite because I lived this fic. It became the entirety of my personality for a whole month because I desperately needed to get to the chapter where Regulus was riding on Padfoots back, through the forbidden forest, with only the light of the full moon to guide them, just to try and help Remus. It's also just because it's very musical and I'm very musical so that makes me love it all the more.

✩ @ghaniblue ✩ Sleeping With Ghosts HP | Regulus x Draco x Harry | 21.9k FIC | M rating | Harry Potter Rare Pair Fest IV I posted a Regulus/Harry/Draco fic last month that I'm very fond of. I started writing it more than 1 1/2 years ago, before I ever read a single Regulus fic. It's triad fic, and I'm pretty proud of the way the individual relationships develop. That was important to me, and I think I succeeded. Posting the first fic on ao3 with this triad tag doesn't hurt either.

✩ @celilasart & @wolfspurr ✩ Shifted Teen Wolf | Derek Hale x Stiles Stilinski | 25k FIC + ART | T rating | Sterek Reverse Bang This work was created for sterek reverse bang, a collaboration fest where the artists create first and the writers write second. wolfspurr and I just clicked when we talked about my art and the things that it inspired in their writer brain ;D the result is just an amazingly sweet and wholesome fic, that is still set in the teenwolf universe as we know it. but unlike many other fics which are full of violence and danger, this one starts with a bang and then it is a beautifully woven story of two people who just complete each other. also... the working title for my art was: tiny fox & sour wolf.

✩ @orange-peony ✩ At the speed of light Carry On | Basilton Pitch x Simon Snow | 26.3k FIC | E rating I picked [this fic] because I had a lot of fun writing it! It started off as a drabble and ended up 26k because I just had a blast writing it and the fandom support was so lovely. Last but not least, Pato made an absolutely stunning art piece for this fic, and it was the best present ever.

✩ @wynnyfryd ✩ i don’t know, you figure it out Stranger Things | Steve Harrington x Eddie Munson | 35.4k WIP FIC | E rating bragging about yourself is difficult, but i’ll just say it’s my favorite because i’m proud of myself for sticking to one project for this long, i love all the artwork the fic has inspired, and i just think the line “the river styx must taste like pennies” fucks severely lmao.

✩ @decaflondonfog ✩ growing pains Check Please! | Eric Bittle x Kent Parson | 50k FIC | T rating i am not usually a long fic gal, which i think is in part lack of patience, but also how attached i get to a universe if i’m working on it for a longer period of time. i finished writing this back in june but this fic felt very “me” in many ways and i think about them so often still  so it’s definitely my 2023 creation i’m proudest of!

I adore your fic recs, which are always so insightful and creative, from your "five favourite fics" lists to the collaborative rec lists (like this one), both are full of amazing suggestions, and are such a creative way of bringing people together. I also love the way you've practiced new mediums and shared beautiful & unusual work with us through your papercraft, like this one and this one! and readers, you should also check out tacky's brilliant SS rec list here as we overlap somewhat (but not entirely!)

onto a couple of favorite fics:

Both Hands (E, 10k) - this is one of the first SS works I read, and I immediately fell in love with it. I *love* the break up/make-up genre, and this fic's creative back-and-forth with the past and the present is immersive and heart-rending at every word.

Nor All That Glisters (E, 110k) - I don't read very many longfics these days, but this one drew me in and kept me scrolling until I hit the end, desperate to know how they'd pull through together. SS's brilliant writing captures a difficult and emotional story with thoughtful, deft prose.

Crash (Into Me) (T, 14k) - quidditch fest 2021 done brilliantly! i remember getting to read this one in advance of the fest, and I just could not put it down, immersed in the creative idea (a 24 hour quidditch match!) and the incredible depth to the Draco/Harry relationship I felt straight off the bat in this fic.

The One You Feed (T, 10k) - talk about creative use of POV -- SS dove straight into craft with this fic, and each point of view feels so distinct, like we're watching them careen into each other. I read this one as it posted, and was eager every day to get to experience the next chapter, and then the next -- you'll enjoy it now too, even without the eager anticipation!

Obsssesssed (T, 1.5k) - ok, so SS has many brilliant short fics, and I struggled to pick a fifth that I wanted to feature here, but I decided on this one because I think it highlights the incredible range that SS brings to every piece of writing -- the light humour and delightful romance in this fic made me grin ridiculously while reading it, and I know it'll do the same for you.

Today is not only September 1st and time to head back to Hogwarts, but it’s @greenmegsnoham​‘s birthday! Megs is a fellow snek who is a master of many trades, so here’s a custom nameplate and a mix of recs of all her fandomy things! I first started seeing Megs around in the Rare Pairs and Drarry servers, but I didn’t get to know her until fests! She participated in a few fests I signed up for too, and then I claimed her Flintwood prompt for Quidditch Fest 2021 (aka this is what had us gushing about this ship to begin with). She was also one of the first folks to join the Wizarding Creators Den server when I first started it almost a year ago (wow, time flies!). When I heard Megs’ had a HP podcast, I was naturally intrigued, and started listening to episodes since late last summer. I joined the @careofmagicalshippers server, and well, the rest is history! If you don’t know what Care of Magical Shippers is, it’s a Harry Potter ship culture podcast where Megs and co-host Nathan dive into the when, why, and how for various ships! From OTPs to the rarest of the rare, they’ve got you covered. They’re full of giggles, but they also go into some interesting and in-depth ideas and dynamics for all the ships they discuss. Each episode I’ve listened to so far has given me something new to think about. The server community Megs has cultivated for the podcast has been a great place to meet like-minded folk too. It’s inclusive and 1000% embraces fandom etiquette to allow readers and creators to like what they like, feel safe and be their authentic selves. There’s a monthly fic club, as well as a few bingos, Ministry Mayhem (aka crack and chaos) and other creative activities for people to take part in if they fancy it. I’ve never seen a community or a podcast like CoMs before, so it’s really refreshing that Megs has taken the reigns to carve out a space that gives love to pretty much any ship you can think of (yay for all of the rare pairs, tropes and spicy things! 🌶️). It’s obvious Megs is passionate about what she does, and she genuinely appreciates all the people who make up fandom (readers, mods, reccers and creators alike). It shows in the way she screams about a lot people’s creations, shares all of the creator events she knows about, and just the general hype she creates about so many different ships is something you want to join in on. Not to mention, she’s not afraid to be goofy or geeky. We absolutely need more of that humour, especially during such a weird time right now. I really loved how deep Megs and Nathan get when it comes to how their families and general pasts would affect who Ginny and Luna become as people. Also after surviving a war, these two have such a potential to balance each other out because of the genuine trust and honesty they already have as friends, which is wonderful for something more. 🎤 >>> We Fancy Fleurmione 🌸📚 w/ Danni (Hermione Granger/Fleur Delacour)

Summary: This week is all about the Lady Things™ with our special guest, Danni (@danpuff-ao3!) What if Hermione went to the ball with Fleur instead of Krum? Or they do both become advocates post-war for magical creatures, including Veela rights? What better duo than two strong, underestimated women? Sorry, Bill. Sorry, Ron. These ladies were made for each other, and we’re here to tell you why and how!

What a hilarious episode! But also, Megs, Nathan and Danni shine an amazing light on how Hermione and Fleur can bring the best out of each other with their determination and their strengths. They are more than just women. They’re capable women who strive for what they want, who come from different backgrounds where they can learn and benefit from each other, and they’re more than what people stereotype them as (ie. beauty or brains, or whatever else). 🎙️ >>> Flintwood: 🪨 + 🪵 = 🔥 (Marcus Flint/Oliver Wood)

Summary: What happens when Flint meets Wood?? You get FIRE!!! This episode is all about Megs and Nathan’s BestieTP, Flintwood! The ultimate Rivals to Lovers!!

This episode is here, not just because Megs and I have screamed bonded over Flintwood so much, but because there is some good emotional and deep content discussed that we normally wouldn’t pick up right away when we see these two together...until folks dig into all the fic, characterisations and possible backstories that exist. Yes, Marcus and Oliver can get physical, rough and rowdy, and there is so much tension between them, but there are so many reasons why (aka denial of feelings). They may have different personalities, but they’re two sides of the same coin. One of my fav episodes so far. 🎤 >>> Versy Weasley, Lover of Wood 👓🪵 w/ Geoff (Percy Weasley/Oliver Wood)

Summary: Perciver is the ship of choice the week, and the perfect Nerd x Jock pairing! Megs and Nathan are joined again in this episode by Geoff (aka DreamQuaffle)! Fantastic Percy-centric discussion to be had, lots of giggles (obviously), and features ANOTHER fire of a fic by Geoff! Get ready for the SPICE!

I loved how silly this episode was! Yes, I am a Perciver shipper, but what I really appreciate about this episode is how Megs, Nathan and Geoff go more into Percy’s characterisation, how Oliver complements him (and vice versa), and the potential of both of them being on the neurodivergent spectrum. It really does make sense when it comes they’re fanatical and sometimes over-zealous tendencies about anything they’re super passionate about (like each other). If Megs wasn’t already busy enough with the podcast, she’s also a fest mod! She ran @hpshipuary, a daily ship challenge, this past February and she is currently modding @hpcestfest (claiming is still open until Sept. 9th) and @hpfacultyfest (which is still open for claiming, and works start posting today). She does all the graphic design work for everything listed above, she’s an artist (check out her art) AND she writes fic! I have no idea how she has time to do all of these things, but gods, I am so impressed. Honestly, I think Megs must have some ridiculous superpowers to juggle everything. Amazzzing.

Summary: Harry can't escape the press, the fans. His dreams as an Auror shattered, relationships near impossible, Harry finds himself trapped in a life he cannot live. If only someone could set him free. 

I had no idea I needed this ship until I read this?! Gosh, soulmates and the amount of feelings this fic has is pretty mind-blowing. So I’m usually not one for infidelity fics, but this one just worked. It reminded me of my uni days where many people (myself included) were told to find someone ASAP to live happily ever after, and sometimes, that’s not how life works. 6. And If I Had To Choose by flipflop_diva [Hermione/Pansy, 3.7k, M] 🌼 💞 A Pansmione soulmate fic from the very recent @femmefest 2022. This fic is so cute and the interactions between Pansy and Hermione are so in character. It was a delight from start to finish.

7. Shades of Dawn by @corvuscrowned [Lavender/Ginny, 2.6k, E] 💔 🔥 The day I stop rec'ing this fic is the day the world ends because I will NEVER stop sharing this beautiful, amazing, heart-wrenching fic. The conflict and the longing between Lavender and Ginny get me every time I read this. It is absolutely perfect.

8. Elemental by @solar-settings [Katie/Alicia, Katie/Leanne, Katie/Ginny, Katie/Cho, 1.7k, T] 💔 💫 Honestly, this is one of my favorite fics of all time. Katie is so beautifully written, and the way she experiences love at different points in her life is simply stunning.

9. keeping count (losing count) by @oliverwvvd [Marcus/Oliver, 1.2k, T] 🌼 💋 Flintwood has been gradually creeping up into my top ships, and this fic is one of the reasons why. Marcus's anxiety and Oliver's tenderness. Sides of these scared boys that we rarely get to see. So short, yet so memorable.

10. Mourning Myrtle by Contrarian_Hedgehog [Moaning Myrtle, 1.7k, T] 💔 💧 A haunting, dark comedy about Myrtle following her death. The prose is beautiful, and the story is even better. It was instantly one of my favorite gen fics as soon as I read it.

11. Brighten the Dark by @skeptiquewrites [Regulus/Harry, 3.3k, E] 💔 🔥 A young Regulus resurrected from the veil and post-war Harry stuck at Grimmauld Place together? Yes, please. The banter and back and forth between them is glorious. As is the dash of feels and underlying tension of why did Regulus come back but no one else?

12. Take Heed, Dear Heart by @danni-the-puff [Harry/Severus, 3.6k, M] 💔 👀 Genderswapped Snarry! It's dark, it's creepy, and yet, the absolute devotion they have for each other kept me glued to every word. The way every character is written and the story is woven through canon (but not quite canon) is masterful.

13. Height Difference by @thistlecatfics [Sirius/Remus, 437, G] 🌼 😂 This story is pure ridiculousness, and I am in love with it. Remus is tall, like very tall, like very very very tall. We all need a tall Remus in our life XD

14. Lit Match by @phantomato [Alecto/Lily, 1.9k, E] 💔 🔥 The first and only fic I've read with this pairing that instantly converted me. Lily's character is so rich and a little morally ambiguous. Canon compliant, and yes, I could see this as canon because it's so good.

15. turning point by @duplicitywrites [Tom/Voldemort, 8.7k, E] 🔥 👀 A self-cest PWP Tom Riddle fic that is... I don't even have words for how hot and intriguing this fic is. Because we all know that Tom Riddle could only love himself ;)

BONUS FIC (>10k): Miraculous by @liladiurne [Harry/Severus, 15.5k, E] 🌼 🔥 I'm a sucker for escort fics, and this one is fluffy while also being sooo hot. I love this Snape, insecure, cynical, rich. He has the perfect life but still doesn't have what he truly wants — Harry.

I am unbelievably over the moon to finally talk about and share this fic with everyone. Writing this was such an amazing experience, and is possibly one of my favourite fics I've written to date. I feel like I say this every time a new fic gets revealed, but honestly speaking, every time I think about this fic I feel all happy inside.

Now that this fic is revealed, I can finally share that this Several Sentence Sunday post that a lot of people seemed to like is actually the deleted scene from this fic.

I want to thank everyone who helped make this story possible, so without further ado, give it up to all these phenomenal people: My alphas, @manixzen and @fantalf, you are both wonderful and were absolutely integral to this fic. From helping me with the tone and the pacing, and perfecting the events of the story.

To my beta @cam-the-chameleon, I don't even know what to say, because no words seem enough. Without you I don't think this fic would have even be possible. You are so thorough and your suggestions are always genius, some of my all time favourite moments in this fic were from your brilliant mind (WAGGLY, Horny Porker, doesn’t seem so inclined to keep away from big pairs of balls!) -- just to name a few.

Seriously, I am so proud of this story and I hope that everyone who read it enjoyed it as much as I did writing.

To the @quidditchfest mods, thank you for creating such an amazing fest. This was the very first fest I ever signed up to, and all I can say is that I am so glad to have participated.

Finally, to @swisstae. Your comments on every chapter of this fic were amazing, I am truly astonished. Thank you so, so much for all your love on that fic, I can't stop myself from going back and reading your comments... And dying a bit inside.

This fic was a lot of firsts. For one, it went through many, many changes during its infant stage. The time skips and the Prophet Article titles actually came a lot later on in the writing process. I was about half way into the fic when I completely changed the whole timeline, shifted scenes around, and decided to try the time skip headings. It was all a bit experimental, I had no idea if I was going to keep it in the final cut, but at the end of the day I'm so glad I did, because the time skips make Delicious Delirium what it is.

For the first time, I tried my hand at a little more light-hearted humour. Most of the fic is just me trying to make myself giggle with my shitty twelve-year-old humour. I'm so glad that my beta Cam shares this same humour, because we really did bounce off each other perfectly. Re: Horny Porker, doesn’t seem so inclined to keep away from big pairs of balls!

The Prophet Articles were also really entertaining to write, my favourite one is the Lockhart article. If you've read the fic, you know the one. Am I allowed to give myself a pat in the back for coming up with that Lockhart joke? Because I love it, and I was absolutely grinning when a commenter pointed that one out.

When presented with an opportunity to help Draco, Harry rises to the occasion. Unfortunately, so does his dick. Sparks fly and alarms blare… and the Hogwarts Owlz Gossip twitter feed blows up. Or: the one where an inconvenient erection brings them together.

“Ok, well!” Ron claps his hands. “On that note, I gotta run. If I’m tardy again, McGonagall will skin me alive and make a football from my freckled hide. I’ll leave you”—he points at Draco—“in our star quarterback’s capable and rather large hands.” He grabs Harry’s wrist and waves his arm about. “Span of ten inches. Good for palming footballs… and other things.” He winks and departs, answering his ringing phone. “Hi babe! I’m walking in the doors right now…”

(Yes, that’s a Ron quote. I just had to).

It came to my attention that @peachpety has been going through a hard time lately and I thought “how convenient that I just found out one of my favorite QF fics is hers!” so here I am - and by the way, this is a humble single rec but have you checked @sweet-s0rr0w’s fabulous reclist with five of Peach’s amazing works? She posted earlier today and inspired me to follow up on a “Peach appreciation day” train so join us and go check all of those first, then come and scream about this brilliant, hilarious, spicy and sweet AU with me!

It’s funny how I don’t usually indulge AUs in this fandom - I’ve read my fair share of Starker High School AUs in the past and always had a blast which was enough to let me know I genuinely enjoy this trope, but for some reason I feel far too attached to Hogwarts and magic to explore something outside the Wizarding world that often. But I was dead and buried in laughter as soon as I started this gem - I got completely sidetracked by the most perfect High School vibes, the light, sweet and silly atmosphere, the hilarious and adorable characters, the witty and chaotic dialogue! I stg I didn’t know this was Peach’s writing when I first read it and now I wonder how I didn’t realize because she always makes me laugh so much, and so very easily.

I’m utterly smitten with this take on the classic jock x nerd romance, can I just say this nsfw brand of flirting is exactly what I needed and the cutest shit I’ve ever seen? Lastly: some of you know that Ron is a fave of mine and his teasing, good-natured voice is a triumph here (which, again, I’m not surprised - have you guys read Peach’s scandalous Dron yet?? Holy shit, that fic 🙌) but anyhoo, let it be said that this fic has one of my favorite Rons ever, don’t ever let anyone tell you otherwise. He’s great, and I need him in my life just like that.

As pretty much everything Peach writes, this 3.8k endearing gem went straight to my sacred collection of “comfort delights”. This is IMO a mandatory pit-stop whenever you have a shitty day or start feeling down. If only Peach knew how much her writing makes a difference in my life! Thank you for bringing sun and warmth to my rainy days, and for soothing my bruised heart whenever I’ve needed it. Feel better soon, my darling! 💜💜💜

Quintessential Quidditch Confessions (Jilytober Day 24)

Prompt: At a sporting event @jilytoberfest

He was playing terribly, and he knew it. 

He’d fumbled three passes, had dropped the quaffle twice when no one was even around him, and had somehow set off a chain of events that had led to assisting in Slytherin scoring on his own team. 

And it was all because of what Lily Evans had said. 

Or rather, hadn’t said. 

“What are we, Evans?” he asked. 

“What do you mean?” she breathed in between the kisses she pressed against the column of his throat. 

“I mean, what are we doing?” he asked, desperately trying to hold together a train of thought while her body was pressed up against him. It was something that had been bothering him for a while, but every time he worked up the courage to ask she was quick to distract him with her hands. Or mouth. Or both. 

“We’re just having fun. Nothing serious. We talked about this,” she said, clearly exasperated, before returning to the path she was tracing up his neck with her tongue. 

With great effort, he pulled back and pushed her off his lap. He strode quickly to the other side of the classroom, dragging in gasps of air– needing space to breath. She was intoxicating. 

“What the hell, Potter?” 

“I can’t do this anymore,” he managed. 

“What?” 

Was she really that shocked? He’d laid his heart out for her, and she hadn’t said anything. She’d reacted very enthusiastically with her body, but every time he tried to get a verbal answer out of her– she clammed up and quickly shut down that line of questioning. She’d continued to deflect, always quick to distract him when he asked her what their ‘arrangement’ meant to her. But that had been a week ago, and there were only so many excuses James could tell himself about why she wouldn’t give him a straight answer. 

“I told you how I feel. I have feelings for you, Evans! This isn’t just a bit of fun for me, and I can’t keep acting like that’s all it is. I want to be with you. I’m in lo–” 

“Stop,” she cut him off, looking pained.

“This is exactly what I’m talking about! Every time I try to talk to you about us, about being anything more. About how I feel about you– you just shut me down. I can’t keep doing this if you don’t feel the same. I can take a hint, Evans.” He snatched up his discarded robes, and headed for the door. 

“Wait,” she called. 

He turned towards her, hardly daring to let himself hope. 

“I– I– I...” she opened and closed her mouth, no sound coming out. She just stared, and it was clear she wasn’t going to say anything. 

The cold settled in his bones– an ache deep enough to rival the pain in his chest. This was it. He’d given her the out, and she’d taken it. 

“I’m sorry–” she whispered. 

“It’s okay, Evans. I always knew it was likely you wouldn’t feel the same. No hard feelings,” he rushed out the ending, suddenly desperate to escape her presence. 

Something hard hit him in the shoulder, bringing back to the moment. He shook his head, trying to clear it. The ache in his shoulder grew and his left arm hung, useless, at his side. 

“Time out!” Sirius yelled, flying over to his side as Madam Hooch blew her whistle to pause the match. 

“What the hell is wrong with you? Snap out of it,” his friend demanded. 

“I’m trying.” 

“No. You’re not trying. You’re moping. And all you have to show for it is fumbled plays and a dislocated shoulder.” 

“Potter’s off his game today. Maybe Black can knock some sense into him– or just knock him off his broom and take him out of play entirely!” came the voice of the announcer.

James gritted his teeth and gestured with his chin to his useless arm. Sirius rolled his eyes, but brought his broom level with James’ bracing his hands against his chest and shoulder in a practiced move. In quidditch, a dislocated joint was commonplace– a trip to Madam Pomfrey would get you sorted right out. But it also meant being taken out of play. So with Sirius’ help, a month of studying, and a few botched attempts– James had learned how to set his shoulder on the field– without having to be taken out. He grunted as the joint popped back into place. It wasn’t perfect, and the pain in his shoulder was still excruciating, but at least now his shoulder was functionable. 

Sirius flew back to the center of the pitch to take position for Madam Hooch to resume play. He made to follow him, when a voice caught his attention. 

“Potter!” He scanned the crowds, but couldn’t find the owner of the voice. He was just imagining it. “Potter!” the same voice called again. This time he spotted her. Lily Evans, hands planted firmly on her hips, a dangerous scowl across her face. Waiting at the bottom step of the house spectator stands. She gestured for him, and like a dog to a whistle he  flew to her side. 

“What the hell are you doing up there, Potter?” she demanded. 

“I–” 

“No. Don’t even start. Because there is no excuse for quidditch playing that shitty.” 

“I’m sorry I’m a little distracted today, Evans,” he quipped back sarcastically, the aching pain in his shoulder eclipsed by the overwhelming ache in his chest. 

“Oh for Merlin’s sake,” she snapped. “You dropped this huge confession on me, then storm off without letting me get a word in edgewise!” 

 “I waited!” he protested angrily. 

“No. You didn’t!” 

“Potter! We’re not going to wait all day for your teenage melodrama!” bellowed Sirius. James held up a finger in a gesture for one second, and refocused on Lily. 

“You took a pause for breath in the midst of your monologue, and when I didn’t know how to respond– because Merlin forbid I not have thought this possible scenario through yet, and practiced my response– you stormed off like the arrogant prat that you are!” 

“Potter! We will start the match without you!” yelled Madam Hooch, but her threats fell on deaf ears– his attention entirely on Lily. 

“I–” he found himself lost for words. 

“Yeah, not so easy is it? To think of an adequate response when someone’s just hurling accusations?” He didn’t say anything. “If you had waited for me to respond, you would’ve heard me say that of course I have feelings for you, you idiot. How could I have gone on so long if I hadn’t? If you had waited, you would’ve heard me say that I love you! I am in love with you, James Potter!” Lily broke off, gasping for breath after her confession. 

“Really?” he whispered, trying to tamp down his fluttering heart. 

“Yeah, really,” she whispered. “I love you, James Potter, you absolute prat.” With that she leaned in and grabbed him by the front of his quidditch kit, pressing a firm kiss to his lips. His hand immediately came up to the back of her head, lacing his fingers through her hair, pulling her closer. “Mr. Potter, while I am happy for the state of your interpersonal affairs, if you do not return to the pitch I will personally have you removed from the Gryffindor team!” boomed Professor McGonagall across the stadium via the commentator’s microphone. 

Reluctantly, James pulled away from Lily– unable to stop the huge grin from spreading across his face. “Gotta go,” he said quietly. 

“Go,” she encouraged him with a smile. He flew up to take his starting position, his smile not even faltering when she called after him: “You better win, or I’m taking it all back!”
