So much was set up, only for it to mean fuck all or barely anything at all.
Looking at you, Quirk Singularity. Humanity and the planet are going to be doomed because Quirks keep evolving? Let's just never mention it again after ShigAFO's hand armour.
And that's just 1 example.
Checkov's gunman was fired before he could pull the trigger.

If you recall, the quirk singularity theory established that quirks will become uncontrollable one day, following the rate at how they were increasing in power and the inability of the body to keep up with such growth. The best example of the veracity of such theory is Tomura Shigaraki and the way his body has morphed in order to accommodate the strength of his quirk, right?
My question is: Have Toga and Dabi breached the quirk singularity point? Could that be the reason why Toga became able to use the quirk of the people she shape-shifts into, the reason why Dabi's alive and his body seems to regenerate a little or at least withstand the rate of destruction he inflicts on himself?

messy ipad sketches this time… featuring spinaraki and my spindabi au (it’s literally spinner being threatened w/ a knife and the mfer’s blushing)…
they’re placeholders considering how busy i am!!!
first one’s my favorite for spinner’s “ZAAMN!!” alone.

#quirk doomsday theory#was created by a shoddy excuse of a scientist and hasn't gone through any actual testing to make it a proper theory#in the scientific sense#there's enough evidence against in in the setting to call it a bunch of croc
#plus also if quirk doomsday theory true (which I don't buy b/c its stupid and I'm a biologist)#then if people continue to be born with more and more powerful quirks that come in earlier and earlier that their bodies cant handle#then quirked people will stop being born after a certain point#if fetuses in utero can't handle the shit or if the pregnant parents end up dying more birthing#uber powerful babies
I'd love to hear more about your thoughts on the quirk singularity theory/quirk doomsday theory from a biologist standpoint! This part of the tags on your quirkless demographics post was so interesting.
Mostly the quirk doomsday theory makes a lot of assumptions that a trend will just accelerate into infinity to an entirely illogical endpoint. Like, it looks really similar to a lot of shit pop cultural takes on evolution in media, and given the mangaka is acting like 20% of a population is a 'dying breed' showing just an astoundingly bad understanding of statistics, I wouldn't be surprised that their understanding of evolution is similarly fucked.
Plus the character who proposed it did so in like the what? 2nd generation of quirks at best? So their information/research was probably very limited given the political climate at the time (which seems to have been a lot of fucking chaos and a semi societal collapse?). (Also the character who coined the theory is clearly biased and a demonstratively shit scientist. And the person who bankrolled the research, assuming any actual research was done, is also biased in favor of the theory.)
Also, the entire existence of vestigial mutations that aren't connected to a quirk is very good evidence against that theory b/c it shows that quirks can weaken to the point of nonfunctionality across generations.
Plus, like, quirks becoming uncontrollable wouldn't lead to the end of humanity. It would more likely lead to people with wild overpowered quirks declining in the population either due to having issues like living, troubles carrying babies to term, quirks that develop too soon in a fetus ending the parent or the fetus, being passed over as partners for multiple reasons and just... wouldn't be the end of humanity. Especially if like every one-in-five people are quirkless. At the very least a decent chunk of the population would survive the so called singularity/doomsday.
(Also so much about the body horror 'singularity' fuckery going on with Shigaraki and AfO is extremely silly to me. Just b/c the mangaka decided that fuckers can pull mass out of thin air and ignore all forms of physical trauma doesn't mean I have to pretend that bodies can do any of that. Like? It takes calories to move that finger forest fuckery that Shigaraki's puppet zombie body does not have and hasn't taken in.)

Really curious about Ben's use of "them" throughout the gas station thing.
Are the attendant's pronouns they/them? Doesn't really come up. Seems pretty he/they.
Were there supposed to be two attendants in the original script? Or a differently-modeled character? I don't think Brock Powell's pronouns are they/them. Maybe Ben's just really general with his pronouns.

Reading a new MHA/BSD crossover fic and thinking about how abilities and quirks will interact... I do like the direction typically taken where abilities are stronger, but in a canonical setting I don't think that'd be the case. Abilities are tied to the soul, while quirks are biology. In a general sense abilities are stronger and rarely have physical repercussions. However, I do think seeing abilities and quirks interact would be interesting, especially with Dazai's ability. Because abilities are tied to the soul, that implies No Longer Human genuinely takes part of an ability user's humanity away. It is because of this I don't think Dazai's ability would work on quirks, and the same goes for Aizawa's quirk on abilities. (However, that also raises the question as to *how* Aizawa's quirk actually works-) With all this said, I don't think quirks can form singularities because quirked people are drained a lot more than ability users when using their powers, so it would just end up a fight of energy rather than the universe not being able to handle the contact and creating a singularity. For example, if Chuuya were to increase the gravity of an object Uraraka is eliminating the gravity on then they'd keep going until Uraraka was too drained to keep the float up, whereas if Uraraka had an unlimited energy supply (like ability users) then it would create a singularity. I do think this would be an interesting path to explore, but I also am too much of a Dazai stan to leave him powerless (╥﹏╥) (Actually, maybe that could open an avenue to Mido and Dazai bonding because Dazai is essentially quirkless, even more so than Aizawa, and he's still integral to the battlefield??) Anyway, enjoy my rant about abilities and quirks; I feel like I'm Deku and Tumblr is my notebook rn-

okay so obviously the bnha ending failed to address quite a few different plot threads but by far the most important one imo has to be the quirk singularity doomsday theory, like???? it was established MULTIPLE times that Dr Garaki was essentially right, and that quirks would continue to develop and mutate until they were uncontrollable????? i feel like thats, idk, KINDA IMPORTANT????????

Okay, Tomura has breached the limit and reached quirk singularity, his body is constantly morphing to adapt to the demands of his own quirk, I know.
It makes me think about the possibilities of Tomura's future.
If he keeps his quirk and gets saved, his body would still be able to shift in that super weird way (a hundred thumbs and fingers flying in an instant, what). The singularity point seems to be irreversible unless the user loses his quirk, so Tomura can always lose decay along with all the quirks AFO collected through the years, but could his body return to what it once was before reaching the singularity? Eri sounds like the key for it, or maybe his body would go back to what it was on his own since it doesn't have the quirk pressure anymore?
If the body changes to accommodate the quirk, but the user loses the quirk, do the changes of the body stay?

houyi ..... i think i love all my bsd ocs on a degree that has me frightened
Tumblr media Tumblr media
#tbd.#zhang linghe the man that you are#the bsd universe is my fav to explore at the moment and singularities are so interesting to me#i like what i did with houyi because as a gravity manipulator is manifests differently and links with his singularity#and his main goal right now is to find and reprimand ability user and singularity host paul verlaine#for his crimes and both because his organisation wants further testing and experimentation because the rumour has spread#that his previous singularity is GONE and he was given ANOTHER#which should not be possible from previous research#and houyis whole thing is he wants to be rid of his singularity or wants a better way to control it#that is completely his own#houyi killed his own original host to establish himself as the “original” being but he knows he isnt and it haunts him#my BABBYYYYYYY#he's the epitome of that “hey thats a nice random quirk youve got there. mind if i mimic it to appear human?”#and the thing is he switches so often between. im human. and IM A GOD.#and i think his original timeline thing stems from wanting to be human and then accepting the fact that he is a god#well. the vessel of one. but it is that it exists WITHIN HIM. but GGRRRFFFF#he doesnt smoke cigarettes but lights them and holds them between his fingers because thats what people do#he wonders that if he likes the colour yellow is that because he likes it? or because the researcher who input his coding#wanted him to like yellow. or did they like yellow.#i love him actually and ive yet to write him but hes there. in my mind. all the time#i think about him sooooo often#he has so many opportunities for threads and plots#gggrrrfff bark bark#will say. as someone who enjoys to a degree that is terridying the blade runner movies#he is very k coded from blade runner 2049 and also. insaaaaanely roy batty#i think i wrote it in his notes that houyi will kill his creator too#like all the rest of them have <3 some indirectly but#houyi makes the choice to kill her after i think a brief discussion on her decision to make him and the fact he always saw her#as more than just his maker#but to her he means so little .... mm roy batty it GIIIIIIVES <3

Ok, I know the theories and claws are flying about Eri running somewhere, and the Rewind Tomura theory, and is she about to get involved and rewind Tomura into Tenko.
But I really think it's not what it looks like because Eri's horn is really small right now. And not too long ago, in the story itself, she rewound Mirio and that used up her built up energy, right?
Even if she is close enough geographically to get to their battle, I don't think she has the energy built up to rewind Tomura ALL the way to a young, Tenko state.

like. i think the metahuman liberation army basically just wants quirks deregulated? which. honestly? i literally do not have enough information about the world to even begin to parse that. are people not allowed to use their quirks without licenses, or is the licensure stuff just for heroes specifically? i had assumed the latter, but do you have to get a permit to be able to use your quirk at all?
if so, i immediately have about ten million questions, but the first that pops to mind is: how would that even work for heteromorphs? like. at that point you literally just are your quirk. is tsuyu using her tongue to grab something technically illegal because it's a facet of her quirk? would hawks not be able to fly without his license? also, was bakugou technically illegally using his quirk when he'd fire off little sparks as a kid to show off?
and if that's not what they're talking about, and people can just use their quirks normally so long as they're not doing anything illegal with them (which is what i'd assumed), then what the hell is the MLA even for?
