Ever since the tabloids rumored you have been dating a famous actor, which is completely false, the paparazzi have been following you like a pack of wolves hunting down their prey. So thirsty for the front page and so hungry for the next juiciest scoop.
If only you didn’t accept his offer to buy you a drink of coffee after bumping into each other, then maybe you wouldn’t have gotten yourself into this mess. Now you can’t even go outside of your house without meeting the bright flashing lights blinding you with every step you go.
Luckily, there was this one person who always tried to protect you amid this baseless drama. That was your faithful bodyguard, and your loving boyfriend, Xiao.
Everyone knew your brutish bodyguard who stuck loyally by your side throughout the years. Despite always being seen together almost everywhere, one suspected him of being your boyfriend. Maybe because you kept things way too professional around him when the eyes and ears of the public media constantly observed you like a hawk. What the media didn’t know is that Xiao would do anything for you. He might as well give you the world or burn it if you wish.
He stuck by you for so long that he knew every inch of your body and every detail of your personality like the back of his hand. You are not the type of person to cheat on him with a guy like that. Though that’s what he told himself, Xiao found you always coming home back from work late at night without him.
Anxiety rushed through him and the devil’s sinister voice filled his head with doubts. His mind was filled with Images of another man kissing the very same lips that he craves every single moment of his waking life.
He can’t let you slip away like that so easily.
There you were sleeping soundly next to him. Your hair was disheveled and your soft skin peeked through your thin lace negligee. How Xiao was thankful he gets to see you in such a vulnerable state.
Your uncomparable beauty is something only his eyes are allowed to see. No one is allowed to marvel at you, especially that bastard who thinks he can take you away like that.
The wooden frames creaked as Xiao shifted his weight to your side of the bed. He lifted your silk nightgown to find that you didn’t even wear anything underneath. It’s as if you were telling him you’ve been wanting him to pleasure you in your sleep.
He wondered what kind of scenarios you are having as you lay there. Are you dreaming of him the same you he’s thinking of you? Or is it someone else that’s in your mind?
Xiao will make sure he’s someone you’ll never forget and this is a night to remember.
Calloused fingers circled your clit and his other hand inserted two fingers inside of you. Your pussy immediately coated itself with your arousal. Even in your sleep, he can make you feel this good.
Quiet, hummed moans left your mouth as he pleasured you. Once he felt like you were loose enough for him to fit, Xiao slowly lifted your dress past your soft chests and undid his clothes before he discarded them on the floor.
He towered over you and his hands sensually slithered around your unconscious body. The man grabbed you by the thighs and placed you by his waist to give him unresisting access to your slick pussy.
His hard cock jammed itself in you. Feeling your warmth with this amount of intimacy was all he could ever ask for and he wanted to monopolize it. His greedy heart won’t allow him to share you with anyone else. Even if it's just a silly gossip people made for their own entertainment, he can’t take the risk of being such a fool.
His cock began to pull out of you only for him to go back inside. Deep, throaty groans and the sound of you two colliding multiple times filled the room. Slow and steady thrusts became rougher and his grip on your thighs became tighter.
You felt a strange sensation coming from below you and a harsh impact that rammed inside you over and over again. Your eyes slowly fluttered and it took you a moment for you to realize Xiao was fucking you mindlessly.
He was a sight to see especially with how the soft, dimmed lights brought a more intimate aura to him. Beads of sweat formed on his forehead his flushed contoured body glistened in the night because of the heated sex you were having. Veiny arms held you tight by your waist you swore you’ll get a bruise after this.
Your hands grabbed the white futon covers as you relished the blissful pleasure. Your back arched and your legs wrapped around Xiao’s waist to pull him closer to you.
Shock ran cold through Xiao’s body to see you awake in such a complicated situation yet he didn’t pause for a moment as the scene of you getting high by his throbbing cock only aroused him more. Xiao had his eyes closed most of the time to feel how tight your pussy is for him much better but he opened his eyelids to check that you were awake.
“You know you’re mine right?” He moaned as you two finally made eye contact. “I’m not letting another man steal you away from me.” Xiao picked up his pace, making your head roll back and moan louder.
Knowing you for years, he knew which places you loved being teased on and he knew the exact part of your neck where even the lightest kiss would make you melt. Without hesitation, Xiao dived down to lay on top of you and sucked on the exact spot that made you cry out his name like it was the only word you know.
His lips unlatched itself from your skin and a light purple hickey appeared. The breath of his moans brushed your body and his sound made its way to your ears, giving you an electric shock that ran down your spine.
“I’m so close, fuck,” he whispered in your ears. “Cum for me. You know you want to.”
True enough. You’ve been holding it for so long and the tight knot in your stomach was unbearable and all you could think about is a sweet release.
Xiao’s hips shuddered against you, his cock plunged deep inside you one last time and thick semen filled up inside. You came undone beneath your boyfriend and euphoria washed over your body once you climaxed.
His tired body lay still on top of you with his head resting on your shoulder. As his high went down, Xiao rolled to the side. Strong arms pulled you closer and wrapped themselves around you. He wanted to be this close to you as both of you fell asleep because he never wants to let you go.

52. doesn’t really care for hero merch (unless it’s something like an accessory/something he can wear) but still gets it free from hawks unwillingly
53. he spaces out a lot so everyone in class 1A thinks he’s just being all broody and dark but in actuality he’s either staring at his reflection (if he’s zoning out at a mirror/window) or talking to dark shadow in his mind
54. SO GOOD at arguing and comebacks but doesn’t use that skill often
55. I imagine his parents to be like in a dark gothic gang or something like that (maybe that’s where he got his way of speaking from🤫)

57. LOVES having his feathers stroked (or preened by dark shadow) but doesn’t ask for it or anything usually
58. speaking about his feathers, since they’re all over his face/head that area is warm during the winter and usually overheats in the summer

60. has a massive sweet tooth though not many people would expect him to
61. has a bunch of nicknames like “fumi” “mika” (one that I got from a fanfic) as in like fuMIKAge “toko” and then there’s mina who adds adjectives to the start of tokoyami like that one time she called him angryami!!
62. collects the most obscure things ever
63. once he like settles into UA and gets more confidence he sets up a secret tiktok or whatever account where he does song covers and his own original songs!! (class 1A find out and they go wild)

65. sometimes he wants to dress more gothic but i’ve seen how hard it is to find super cool masculine looking goth clothes☹️

68. has a collection of rings
69. love language is definitely mostly gift giving!! (and all the other ones but mostly gift giving)

74. also loves shopping!!
75. mr aizawa’s favourite student (one of aizawa’s voice actors, english I think, told us this was true!!)

77. can mimic voices and sounds SO easily
78. he only gets really super mad when someone ignores him or goes into his room without permission!
79. can (but probably won’t) argue on why being goth and being emo are different things
80. birds sometimes follow him thinking he’s one of them (he is but would never admit it)
81. HATES quirks that can make people laugh involuntarily (he gets flashbacks into the past with miss joke😖😖)

85. someone once mentioned mating season to him and he still holds a grudge
86. is able to perfectly understand Shakespeare’s texts and speak like him
87. CAN ROLLER SKATE.
88. he can hit really really high notes (like think ballad of Jane doe from ride the cyclone) while singing but refuses to do that front of most people

90. once accidentally flew into a window and hawks will never let him live it down
91. planned to be a writer/journalist when he was younger

94. genuinely likes the taste of birdseed but refuses to let himself enjoy it
95. is always seen with closed eyes because he’s always just naturally tired so this is his way of resting without actually resting!
96. everyone thinks he’s always annoyed or mad or something cuz that’s the way his face looks when he’s just neutral :((
THIS IS A PART 2 OF MY OTHER HEADCANON VIDEO A BIT AGO SO THATS WHY THE NUMBERS ARE ALL WEIRD!! ALSO I LOST MOTIVATION TO DO THIS ONE SO THEY KINDA GOT WORSER EACH TIME😰

Interview with The Telegraph (2023)
Tumblr media
We all know what is meant by McCarthyism. It popularly refers to the first half of the 1950s, when Senator Joseph R McCarthy led a ruthless campaign to hound suspected communists out of the US government. What’s less well-remembered than the Red Menace is the Lavender Scare: by an executive order from President Eisenhower, McCarthyism also targeted gays and lesbians. “If you want to be against McCarthy, boys,” the senator once told the press, “you’ve got to be either a Communist or a c--ksucker.”
Thus gay men and women, living closeted lives as they worked for the state, were targeted by sinister-sounding bodies: the FBI’s Sex Deviance Investigations Unit, Washington DC police’s Sex Perversion Elimination Program and the Department of State’s M Unit. All sought to identify government employees deemed to be security risks vulnerable to blackmail.
Popular culture lost sight of the Lavender Scare until it was brought into the light in the US by Thomas Mallon’s 2007 novel Fellow Travelers. Set mostly in the early 1950s, it told of a tangled romance between two men; Hawkins “Hawk” Fuller, a handsome war veteran and political fixer who steers clear of emotional attachment until he meets Tim Laughlin, a sweet young Catholic newcomer to DC whom he nicknames Skippy and sets up in the office of a Republican senator.
The novel was not published in the UK. But now it has been adapted for television, and one piece of casting in particular feels calculated to get the attention of audiences beyond the US: Laughlin is played by British actor Jonathan Bailey, best known as the Regency heartthrob Anthony, 9th Viscount Bridgerton.
His co-star is the American Matt Bomer, who, like Bailey, professes ignorance of what the New York Times, in its review of the novel, referred to as “the Lavender Hill mob”. “It’s a chapter of LGBTQIA history that I was completely unaware of,” he says.
This is not the first time the novel has been adapted – it was staged as an opera in Cincinnati in 2016. By then it had already caught the attention of Ron Nyswaner, who laboured over bringing the book to the screen for the best part of a decade. Best known for his script for Philadelphia, the 1993 Aids courtroom drama which earned Tom Hanks his first Oscar, it was his stint as a producer of Homeland that persuaded Showtime to fund an expensive eight-part decades-spanning drama. “I’m still in disbelief that we were able to tell this story on the scale that we were able to tell it,” says Bomer, who is also an executive producer on the drama.
The scale is considerable. The period detail of 1950s Washington, in both corridors of power and gay demimonde, is lavishly recreated. And as the story progresses it parts company with the novel, which opens with Hawk looking back at the closure of his career as a diplomat in Tallinn in 1991. Nyswaner’s script expands to take in other pivots in modern US history: the Civil Rights movement, the Vietnam War, and the spread of Aids in the 1980s, when the now-married Hawk and the dying Laughlin meet for a final reckoning.
I met the drama’s two stars in London earlier in the summer, before the actors’ strike in Hollywood put a stop to such encounters. It was the first time they’d seen each other since the end of the shoot. Bomer, though just off the plane and heavily jet-lagged, exudes a chiselled, blue-eyed intensity. Bailey fizzes with puppyish energy. Both are themselves gay and Bailey in particular sees their casting as a sign of progress. “We would not be playing these parts five or 10 years ago,” he says. The highlights of his CV are mix and match. He has played mainly straight characters on television in the likes of Broadchurch, Crashing and W1A, and gay characters on stage in the Sondheim musical Company and Mike Bartlett’s play C--k in the West End.
The career of Bomer, 10 years his senior, looks a little more linear. His most high-profile film role is as an object of ladies’ lust in male-strippers drama Magic Mike and its sequel. But in 2014 he won a Golden Globe playing a closeted journalist in HBO’s adaptation of Larry Kramer’s play The Normal Heart. In 2018, he made his Broadway debut as part of an exclusively gay cast reviving The Boys in the Band, a portrait of gay life in 1960s New York.
Earlier on the day we met, Stanley Tucci had said on Desert Island Discs that he doesn’t see why straight actors shouldn’t play gay characters. “I think it’s incredibly complicated and nuanced,” says Bailey with a sigh. “You just want to make sure that everyone feels there’s enough space at the table. Everyone who is panicking that they’re never going to be able to play outside their own experience is wasting their energy.”
Bomer counters that it ought to cut both ways, that gay actors should be allowed to play straight. He speaks darkly of movie producers who “wouldn’t hire me because of who I was”, of gay actors who “weren’t even given a shot. A lot of it boils down to opportunity. Was everyone given the opportunity for the role? There is something about seeing the most authentic version of who you are represented on screen. It gives you hope.”
In Fellow Travelers that authenticity is portrayed most unswervingly in the bedroom, which the plot requires Hawk and Laughlin to visit often. “I haven’t necessarily really seen gay intimacy in a way that I would want to,” says Bailey. I gently remind him of Linus Roache, who plays a senator in Fellow Travelers but, back in 1994, starred in Jimmy McGovern’s Priest as a Catholic priest struggling with his sexuality – graphically so in a central scene with Robert Carlyle. “Oh yeah, that’s true,” he says. “I looked to that a lot.”
As is on trend for male actors nowadays, both leads look impeccable with their shirts off in low honeyed lighting. “Hawk is ex-military and he also wants to appeal to people in bathroom stalls,” reasons Bomer, who did period-appropriate Royal Canadian Air Force drills and looks no less pneumatic than he did in Magic Mike.
Bailey concedes that Laughlin, who orders milk the first time we meet him, boasts the body of a Greek god for the simple reason that the shoot overlapped with Bridgerton (yes, he confirms, the newly married Anthony is back for the third season). “There’s no way Tim would have had a Bridgerton body, but what can you do if you’re commuting? I was like, I really want to lose weight to tell Tim’s story, but I lost fat and just got really ripped.”
How resonant is the history portrayed in Fellow Travelers to today? It’s easy to play six degrees of separation between now and then. For instance, McCarthy’s closeted sidekick Roy Cohn is a lead character (played here by Will Brill). A ferocious prosecutor of both communists and gays, he would go on to be Donald Trump’s lawyer, before dying of complications from Aids. It was Trump’s three appointees to the Supreme Court who this summer enabled a 6-3 ruling releasing businesses and organisations from the obligation to treat same-sex couples equally. The landmark ruling occurred just days before I met the actors, and has been widely interpreted as a profound attack on LGBT rights.
“There is an entire generation of men and women who suffered and struggled and loved under a government that felt that its morals were more important than their personal freedoms,” says Bomer. “And that’s exactly what we see happening today. Whether it’s McCarthy or the current Supreme Court justices, are morals more important than freedoms?”

boys’ primary social media & internet forums of choice:
cartman -- 4chan. self-explanatory. his favorite boards are /cm/, /pol/, but is also partial to /toy/ and /gif/. /Lgbt/ lurker firmly of the position that traps aren't gay.
kenny -- youtube. watches a lot of fail compilations, conspiracy theories, and doomsday preppers. occasionally he plays three hour long sigma male motivation and philosophy videos on the nature of evil in the background while huffing computer duster.
stan -- snapchat. the guy that makes a bunch of annoying black background 2 am “anyone up” snaps all the time and then is upset when no one is. Mostly watches others' stories and does not post incredibly often but is easily tricked into sending shirtless pics to girls from school despite better judgement then minorly freaks out when notified a screenshot was taken (for the purpose of light mockery at the girls' slumber parties) to Kyle who chides him for his low self-esteem.
kyle -- reddit. super annoying about it too. is a mod for 2-3 midsize subs where everyone hates him because he takes it far too seriously and is constantly making pinned posts reminding everyone of sub rules. always making snarky comments like “not sure why i’m being downvoted...” that are then in turn downvoted. Bitches to Stan about mod drama who gives it the good ol college try pretending he cares about the power struggle between him and mod u/PoohDonkey420
butters -- split between Pinterest and TikTok. likes a lot of paper craft and seasonal decorating ideas on Pinterest and then makes videos of his attempts to recreate them on TikTok; becomes a minor celebrity subject to many conspiratorial YouTube documentaries about his living situation given how often Stephen interrupts a video to yell at him that butters is not tech savvy enough to cut out in their entirety.
craig -- also 4chan. almost exclusively sticks to /co/ and /mu/ but likes to pop-in to /lgbt/ to remind everyone on board (see: Cartman) that traps are indeed gay.
clyde -- twitter. Gets no engagement whatsoever but is posting all day every day. Is always direct messaging chicks with onlyfans links in bio to see if he can sweet talk them into nudes for free. Never does. cries to Craig about it who then calls him pathetic.
tolkien -- instagram. gym thirst traps and pictures of expensive family vacations. Super into grindset posting about no days off and aspirational graphics, power of positive thinking type shit. falls victim to the charms of hot women hawking tummy tea.
jimmy -- also reddit. master of fake-post-as-creative-writing-exercise posting. Frequents r/TIFU and r/jokes, then cross-posts his r/jokes post into r/standupcomedy to ask “is this anything?” and receives maybe two comments, three if it’s a good day. is the “you sir win the internet have my upvote” guy.
tweek -- tiktok, but it's a love-hate relationship. the never-ending stream of short videos is the perfect time-wasting relaxation pit due to his severe ADHD but induces extreme paranoia about what exactly the algorithm *does*. never posts, just favorites funny and/or cute videos to show craig later; Craig laughs at maybe every fifth one.

hii three questions in one ask for fun. who r ur favorite charas, what r ur fav arcs and what r ur fav subplots in mha :}} big fan of the todofam sideplot and the endeavor agency arc… bkdk third wheeling family drama. hilarious… 😁😁
genuinely HOW could you do this to me, I am so indecisive and I have so many favorite things </3 Also get ready for the sheer volume of words I am about to throw at you :D
SO, favorite characters. Obv there are So Many Characters in this show, but I still feel like I can count the ones I don't like on one hand and have fingers left over. I definitely have some obvious favorites (Aizawa, Mic, Shinsou) and some only-slightly-less obvious ones (Shigaraki, All Might, Hawks), but there are also some faves I don't yap about as much like Kirishima, Jirou, Miruko, and VLAD KING the LOVE of my LIFE. I queued a post recently about Inasa being an underrated fave, which is still true, but Vlad King is truly the king (haHA) of underrated faves. I love that man a ridiculous amount. THE TL;DR HERE IS THAT I LOVE 98% OF THE CHARACTERS IN THIS SHOW SM IT'S UNREAL.
Arcs & subplots under the keep reading bc my main personality trait (never shutting up) struck again ! The short answer is Sports Festival & Todorokis, Shinsou, Rooftop gang for anyone who doesn't want to stare at that wall of text 😭
Favorite arcs: I have almost as many favorite arcs as I do favorite characters LMAO. You are SO RIGHT about the Endeavor Agency arc; usually people are forced to witness Midoriya & Bakugou's drama but oh, how the tables have turned. I also love Fuyumi and Natsuo and am always delighted to see them, even if they <3 punching me directly in the feelings :(
The USJ arc is, imo, a perfectly executed plot point, so from a writing perspective I really love USJ. It's got action, it's got character spotlights, but most importantly, it ties together the plot/character/worldbuilding threads of the first season so perfectly. Like. It's seamless. It was a writing school level moment. No notes.
The Hideout Raid arc (specifically All Might vs AFO) and Paranormal Liberation War gave me grays at 25. Joint Training is always a delight. But if I had to pick One Arc to Rule Them All it might honestly be Sports Festival?? It features all of my top three favorite characters for more than one (1) scene each and it is just. Such a wild time.
There is so much to unpack about this arc but it has a very special place in my heart bc the first time I ever watched it (so, like, 5+ years ago) my sister and I for some reason decided to treat it like people who care about the Super Bowl treat the Super Bowl. It was our Olympics except the team we were rooting for changed depending on the episode. To this day I remember my sister turning on a DIME from hating Bakugou since Season 1 Episode 1 to CHAMPIONING him with her whole chest bc Monoma pissed her off so much when he stole Bakugou's headbands. And now he's like her second favorite character in the entire series so?? Origin story moment ig.
Last but not least, favorite subplots!!
TODOROKIS. YEAH. Their entire plotline was one of the major factors that motivated me to catch up on the show. I was like what do you mean they're trying to give superhero Fire Lord Ozai a redemption arc? What do you mean that other fire guy was actually a Todoroki? Like... you have to remember that where I left off w this show, Endeavor seemed to exist solely to give Shouto a backstory, and honestly I remembered like nothing about Dabi. If getting back into MHA was a pit of quicksand the Todorokis truly walked me right up to the edge of it. It was like that part of TAZ where Taako is like 'okay that's weird enough that I'm gonna go in there.'
I've said it before and I'll say it again: Shinsou's off-screen character arc is EVERYTHING to me. I could write a thesis on this side character who appears like. Three times in the entire show. Shinsou really said 'I will be a mirror character AND undo the First Great Contradiction of this series AND have tangible, believable character growth, all while being given less screen time than Mineta' and I love that for him.
The rooftop gang... I'm not going to say much on this one for manga reasons but it's definitely a subplot I find very compelling. I'm still ruminating on its execution so far but I Did Cry over the Reveal in season 5. It re-contextualized so much, not just about Aizawa and Mic, but about UA and the lives of hero students. Ack.
TYSM FOR THIS ASK, this week has been three weeks long but I had so much fun writing this exhausted ramble <3

Last post about this and then I'm cutting myself off.
The reason I'm obsessing over this show so much is that I can see the story that it's trying to tell, or at least what I'm imagining that it's trying to tell, and I love that story so much! I really really want to watch it. So much about parents and obligations and class and grief and first love that should have me—that I wish had me—gripping me heart, but instead all I feel is annoyed.
And I go into the tags and see people analyzing it with all these fascinating insights about characters and themes, and I feel envious that y'all are seeing a version of the story that actually contains those things. And I'm glad for everyone who's getting the story that I think should be there, but sad that I'm not. And also confused about what it is that I'm missing that it works for so many of you.
Also, in trying to analyze what's not working for me I end up watching like a hawk, and then I start getting even more judgmental about everyone's acting, and that feels mean, and also I can't tell whether or not my judgments are accurate.
In the meta I just reblogged about this show (I don't want to tag anyone in my temper tantrum, but you'll see it if you scroll back) she talked about how Jojo is also trying to make a gangster lakorn as a BL, and that he's not that interested the beats of a capital R Romance story. unfortunately, the gangster part works even less for me than the romance part :-( Maybe there every storyline got compromised for every other one, and nothing remained at full strength? I hypothesized earlier, with four screenwriters and a director, maybe too many cooks in the kitchen.
But since most people seem to be seeing what I'm looking for, maybe it's just me. Maybe I've forgotten how to watch high drama soapy Thai bl and need to retune my expectations.
And sometimes things just don't work for people. And I need to get over that and move on with my life. Just wanted to whine one last time before I do so.
(But also seriously if you had a similar reaction I would love to hear because I'm feeling a little insane right now.)

One of the most original time-travel thrillers since 12 Monkeys. A brilliant subversion of the Time Paradox trope, with enough plot twists to keep you entertained until well after the movie is finished. Predestination is an amazing movie with great performances from Ethan Hawke and Sarah Snook. It’s a movie that will feel like Inception, when it comes to messing with your mind and barely anyone has heard of it. It is highly underrated and unknown, sadly.

A zombie virus breaks out and catches up with a father as he is taking his daughter from Seoul to Busan, South Korea’s second-largest city. Watch them trying to survive to reach their destination, a purported safe zone.
The acting is spot-on; the set pieces are particularly well choreographed. You’ll care about the characters. You’ll feel for the father as he struggles to keep his humanity in the bleakest of scenarios.
It’s a refreshingly thrilling disaster movie, a perfect specimen of the genre.

Serenity is a futuristic sci-fi film that serves as a feature-length continuation of the story-line from the TV program Firefly (2002–2003). The story revolves around the captain (Nathan Fillion) and crew of the titular space vessel that operate as space outlaws, running cargo and smuggling missions throughout the galaxy. They take on a mysterious young psychic girl and her brother, the girl carrying secrets detrimental to the intergalactic government, and soon find themselves being hunted by a nefarious assassin (Chiwetel Ejiofor). The first feature-length film from Joss Whedon (The Avengers), Serenity is a lively and enjoyable adventure, replete with large-scale action sequences, strong characterizations and just the right touch of wry humor. An enjoyable viewing experience that stands alone without demanding that you have familiarity with the original program beforehand.
2. Sorry to Bother You (2018)
Genre: Comedy, Fantasy, Science Fiction
Actor: Armie Hammer, Danny Glover, David Cross, Ed Moy, Forest Whitaker, James D. Weston II, Jermaine Fowler, John Ozuna, Kate Berlant, Lakeith Stanfield, Lily James, Marcella Bragio, Michael X. Sommers, Molly Brady, Omari Hardwick, Patton Oswalt, Robert Longstreet, Rosario Dawson, Steven Yeun, Teresa Navarro, Terry Crews, Tessa Thompson, Tom Woodruff Jr., Tony Toste, W. Kamau Bell
Director: Boots Riley

In the year of the Netflix TV Show Maniac, another absurdist title stole critics’ hearts. Sorry to Bother You is a movie set in an alternate reality, where capitalism and greed are accentuated. Lakeith Stanfield (Atlanta) is a guy called Cassius who struggles to pay his bills. However, when at a tele-marketing job an old-timer tells him to use a “white voice”, he starts moving up the ranks of his bizarre society. A really smart movie that will be mostly enjoyed by those who watch it for its entertaining value, and not so much for its commentary. It is like a Black Mirror episode stretched into a movie.
1. Ex Machina (2015)

Actor: Alex Garland, Alicia Vikander, Chelsea Li, Claire Selby, Corey Johnson, Domhnall Gleeson, Elina Alminas, Gana Bayarsaikhan, Oscar Isaac, Sonoya Mizuno, Symara A. Templeman, Symara Templeman, Tiffany Pisani
Director: Alex Garland

Ex Machina is the directorial debut of Alex Garland, the writer of 28 Days Later (and 28 Weeks Later). It tells the story of Caleb (Domhnall Gleeson from About Time), an IT developer who is invited by a billionaire CEO to participate in a groundbreaking experiment — administering a Turing test to a humanoid robot called Ava (Alicia Vikander). Meeting the robot with feelings of superiority at first, questions of trust and ethics soon collide with the protagonist’s personal views. While this dazzling film does not rely on them, the visual effects and the overall look-feel of Ex Machina are absolutely stunning and were rightly picked for an Academy Award. They make Ex Machina feel just as casually futuristic as the equally stylish Her and, like Joaquin Phoenix, Gleeson aka Caleb must confront the feelings he develops towards a machine, despite his full awareness that ‘she’ is just that. This is possibly as close to Kubrick as anyone got in the 21st century. Ex Machina is clever, thrilling, and packed with engaging ideas.
