One thing that does irk me about public radio is that there’s always a hard pivot from election coverage to classical music.
So, now that they’ve wrapped up their special coverage of the election, I’m just listening to Mahler symph 7 and refreshing Associated Press every 3 minutes like a crazy person.

When I was a kid, my mom tried going back to school to become a journalist. She finished right when the industry collapsed here in Canada, so the career change never panned out, but she’s told me so many valuable things about how journalism works nowadays and how journalism was taught to her.
Something particularly haunting that she told me recently is that ever since the radio became a major form of entertainment and started covering breaking news, radio stations didn’t have the same regulations as newspapers, so they were able to get away with turning it into a form of entertainment, instead of a way to stay informed.
Which meant that most people started getting their news from the radio, because they made it sound more “interesting”, and print journalism suddenly had to compete with it to stay relevant.
Her professors taught her that in modern journalism, accuracy is everything, but the definition of “accuracy” has been twisted beyond recognition. The events journalists cover still have to be true, they need to have actually happened, but if you have to leave something out to make a more compelling story? Well… “kill your darlings” is pretty common writing advice, eh? Who says we shouldn’t do that, too?
Ever since she told me that, the rise of dis/misinformation online has come into focus. And I don’t know if I like what I see.
Journalism became a form of entertainment in Canada decades ago, when they were forced to compete with radio stations to stay afloat. And now major news stories are being covered by social media outlets, and people rarely read past the headlines, and the best way to get engagement is to make people rage, and argue, and despair.
I… don’t think the problem started with social media, you guys. I think we should all be looking into how industries other than print journalism are regulated when it comes to the news, and if they’re any less than what’s expected of print journalism, we need to be lobbying to hold those industries to the same standards.

Made this gem earlier on Canva, and tbh Alastor's determination (to fuck Vox up lol) is very motivating to get shit done.
Real life me actually has radio broadcasting experience, and I'm finally taking a voice over class from Closing Credits, an online school I 100% rec. To be a voice actor (which I'm also returning to) is to hustle, something Amir Talai (Alastor's VA) talked about in an Instagram post I recently saw from a few years ago, but is still relevant advice all the same.
Obvi I'm making a joke here because it's fitting, but if you become a deer in the headlights and stay stagnant for too long you're gonna get hit. You gotta keep moving, or shit, talking in this case, bc the only one who's going to motivate you is you.
Not the HH post anyone wanted, but still grateful the Radio Demon reminded me, "Hey, I liked doing that. I missed doing that." 😆

National Museum of Broadcasting
National Museum of Broadcasting Plans Begin to Take Shape
The Pittsburgh, PA museum will highlight myriad technologies that have supported electronic media...
A long-imagined dream of building a museum honoring broadcasting and electronic media has just taken another step forward.
Plans are in the works for the creation of the National Museum of Broadcasting in Pittsburgh that will explore the 103-year-old timeline of electronic media, from its humble beginnings in AM radio all the way to our modern era of streaming and social...
“Nov. 2, 1920 is recognized as a significant date in radio’s history and evolution, as most historians agree that it marks the beginning of regular and continuing entertainment and news broadcasts directed exclusively to the general public. Pittsburgh’s KDKA [AM at 1020 MHz], which has now been operating continuously for over 100 years, is recognized for launching broadcasting as we know today that evening, by airing continuing coverage of presidential election returns.”

Today I presented a session on music criticism where I…
- Finished the sideshow in about half the session time (the rest was q&a/discussion format)
- Referenced Marxist musicologist & Frankfurt School critical theorist Theodor Adorno multiple times
- Signed off with “Stop Cop City byeeeeee!”
- Made the slideshow in my hotel room the night before while drinking white claws.
- Got so many good reviews and compliments and people telling me it was the best session of the conference.
Anyways now I’m about to take a 6 hour flight across the country and have an imposter syndrome crisis on the plane! Wonderful!
#I am very proud of myself though#my session absolutely rocked#I really hope I don’t feel too bad of imposter syndrome#theodor adorno#radio broadcasting#radio#music criticism#criticism#vagueposting#critical theory#stop cop city

Aggrieved by UK government insistence it launch a national popular music radio station, the BBC unilaterally created a high culture network : 1945 : BBC Radio 3
In terms of delivering value for money for the Licence Fee payer, ‘Radio 3’ is easily the most expensive of the BBC's five analogue radio networks. My calculations for 2009/10 show it had cost 8.5p per listener hour, compared to 1.7p for ‘Radio 4’, 2.5p for ‘Five Live’, 0.9p for ‘Radio 1’ and 0.6p for ‘Radio 2’.
There may be arguments about the artistic merit of Radio 3 (though I would argue exactly the same for Radios 1 and 2), but there is no denying that, in value for money terms, it is up there with the ‘BBC Asian Network’ [9.0p per listener hour] and ‘Radio Cymru’ [14.6p] on the expensive-ometer.
Remember the network's history. After World War Two, the BBC was 'persuaded' to continue the popular wartime ‘General Forces Programme’ as a new domestic network - the ‘Light Programme’. Until then, the BBC had resisted the notion of a full-time comedy and popular music network as horribly downmarket. At the same time, as a cultural response, the BBC made its own decision to launch the ‘Third Programme’ (renamed ‘Radio 3’ from 1967) on which then Director General WJ Haley promised "operas, plays, discussions, features will be given the fullest time their content needs."
As Sean Street wrote in his excellent account of UK radio from 1922 to 1945, 'Crossing The Ether': "The message for the old guard was clear: taste would not be undermined by change, culture would not be sacrificed for populism."
Radio 3 exists because the section of the BBC that would not be seen dead listening to Radio 2 (as the Light Programme was renamed from 1967) wanted their own high-brow radio station. The question is - should the rest of us still have to pay so highly for them to enjoy that privilege?
There is no doubt that Radio 3 produces some excellent unique programmes. The problem is that too few people ever get to hear them. And, if BBC Asian Network is still on the chopping board for these very reasons, how is it that Radio 3 has always managed to justify its continuing existence as a network that is virtually 'untouchable' when axes fall?
[Published reader comment to 'Radio 3 Is Letting Its Listeners Down', Sarah Spilsbury, The Guardian, 5 Oct 2011]
