Mass Effect 3 replay, Priority: Geth Dreadnought:

-Adas – Why have the geth survivors not uploaded to a server yet?

There’s at least one server on Rannoch. Surely they should be able to reach it?

-I’ve been debating whether to take Liara or Javik on missions where I can only choose one companion. Javik won.

Sorry, Liara. So far Javik’s had better dialogue; that’s not a knock on you, your writers have just really dropped the bar this game.

-It’s odd that Edi can access the Dreadnought’s docking protocols with her Cyber Warfare suite. In ME2 she implied the geth mind is huge; even with their losses, they should still be able to block her.

Given the circumstances, I’ll chalk it up to the geth being distracted.

-Once again: Why is Shepard performing the highly dangerous task of walking through the damaged docking tube to ensure the others can get in? Why not, say, a highly qualified engineer like Tali?

-The docking tube walk is cinematic but doesn’t actually do much. You just trudge along. I wouldn’t say it really adds anything to the game.

-Oh, look. The docking tube broke off and Shepard’s asked Tali to review the schematics to open another.

Tali didn’t just go in the first place because…?

-Why are there keyboards and monitors all over this ship?

It’s a geth ship. Geth are software. A geth currently in a platform should be able to connect directly to the ship. Or speak to the geth in the ship. Why would they ever need a keyboard or monitor?

This isn’t even a repurposed organic station, like the one in ME2. The geth built this ship. There’s no excuse for these to be here unless the geth want them here and I can’t think of a good reason.

What, do they LARP about working side by side with organics in their downtime?

-Also, why are there cables everywhere?

That doesn’t feel like a geth thing to do. They’re machines and machines are all about precision. They wouldn’t leave cables lying around because there wouldn’t be a reason to.

Loose cables are closely associated with Reapers, so that might be their fault. (And what does that say about Reapers?)

But there’s no other Reaper tech until we get to Legion, so these feel more like they’re supposed to be geth and that is again baffling.

-I can never find the hull breach Shepard mentions and I check every playthrough.

-Javik: There’s no sense of self-preservation in these machines.

Tali: Networked intelligence! As we kill them, their attacks become more aggressive.

I suspect that explains quite a bit of the Morning War. As more geth are destroyed the remaining attack more ferociously, causing the quarians to attack more frantically in self-defense, amping the geth response…

A vicious cycle that didn’t end until the quarians retreated. And now we’re in the middle of quarian/geth war, take two. They’re just going to to keep egging each other on unless an outside force can break it up

-Tali says the ship design is almost quarian.

Logical. Geth were designed by quarians; it makes sense their technology would be based off of quarian technology.

-So. It turns out that Charge is bugged on this mission.

For me it failed most of the time in the battery. That made the mission a LOT harder than it needed to be. I finally resorted to not using it in the last stretch and made it through.

Apparently it’s also bugged on Rannoch, so that’s something to look forward to. Ugh.

-I thought it wasn’t possible to save between the battery and meeting Legion. I kept trying to on my playthroughs and it would be greyed out.

This time, I actually killed all the geth in the battery and the game autosaved. When I reloaded that autosave, I could properly save the game.

That would have saved me so much time last playthrough when I kept reloading to see Edi’s dialogue with Legion.

This mission is very buggy.

-Legion, if you go renegade: You know we would never agree to subjugation by the Old Machines.

Tali, take notes. Legion defied his people because he thought they were making a mistake. Hint, hint.

-Legion, about not being controlled by the Reapers: Our architecture prevents it. We are too complex.

I would love to hear more about this. Reapers are hyper advanced machines but they can’t control Legion because Legion is too complex? Really? Really?

I feel that’s a pretty awful excuse on the writer’s part, but taken at face value it’s pretty funny. The Reapers are apparently shitty programmers. They put all the points into organic mind control

There’s probably something that can be done with the Rachni queen and Legion both being hive minds and able to resist Reaper control.

Clearly, the solution is to get the salarians working on psychic tech. Once all organics are joined into a hive mind indoctrination will no longer be possible.

Look, it’s no worse a solution than the Crucible. At least mine has foreshadowing.

-Legion: The creators attacked. The geth wished to live. The Old Machines extended an offer.

This is said in a format reminiscent of If-Then statements. It also reminds me of geometry proofs. Fitting, as Legion is a machine.

It also places the blame entirely on the quarians. While I’m inclined to agree the quarians are primarily at fault, it’s interesting that Legion structured the sentence such. It’s designed to make the listener draw the same conclusion. Quite a social maneuver for a being nominally bad at them.

As for my feelings on it: As I said, if you back someone into a corner they’ll do anything to get out. It’s not surprising that the geth accepted the Reaper’s offer. That said, it’s still a choice they made and they should be held accountable for it.

-Legion: Had the creators not attacked, it would have been unnecessary.

Legion’s making it emphatically clear that he blames the quarians for this entire situation. He’s in a tough spot – his people are under attack, they’ve made a deal with the devil, and their best bet at survival and freedom is the devil’s sworn enemy. Who is allied with the force attacking his people.

Yeah, Legion’s having a very shitty day. I’ll give him a pass on blaming the quarians. I’m cursing them for their stupidity and I’m just incidentally involved.

-The science behind this situation is worth than Star Trek’s science babble. How does using Legion to broadcast the signal to all geth even work?

Yes, the geth are a hive mind that Legion is connected to. We also just established that the Reapers can’t control him. So how they can use him to control the rest of the geth?

If I really wanted to I could come up with an answer, but since the writers couldn’t be bothered I’m not going to either. Let’s just chalk this up to the writers wanted Shepard to rescue Legion and this is the excuse they came up with.

-Edi, about the shackles on Legion: Yes. Used by organics, it is understandable. For geth to install this in a formerly independent unit is… unnecessary.

Love the implication here that the geth did not take Legion refusing to agree to ally with the Reapers well.

I think Legion is slowly starting to come to terms with the fact that not all intra-geth squabbles can be resolved peacefully. He keeps getting shoved into situations where he has to confront that firsthand.

-Why don’t the other geth reenable the Dreadnought’s drive core?

I suppose we can assume Legion did something to take the drive core out permanently or at least delay reenabling it, but the game does not say such.

-Legion disabled the Geth Dreadnought as a gesture of goodwill and the quarians promptly destroy it.

Peace negotiations are off to a great start.

-The geth attack Shepard and co as soon as Legion is freed and before the quarians amp up their attack on the Dreadnought.

Theoretically, they should be free of the Reaper signal. Legion’s no longer broadcasting it and he implies later that the short range signal on Rannoch isn’t in full working order yet.

So these geth may be Reaper controlled or they may be willingly attacking Shepard because they’re fully onboard with allying with the Reapers.

I suspect it’s the latter.

Yep, no problems with the negotiations.

-Gerrel is an ass and should be removed from command. He’s not coordinating with the rest of the Fleet; he’s moving on his own and leaving them to support him or die.

-Why do geth fighters have any seats? Or storage space?

A platform is not required to control the fighter. Geth can just upload themselves to it.

I suspect this is another instance of the writers forgetting the established lore of the geth.

It would have been kind of funny if Legion had abandoned his platform and uploaded himself to the fighter and you spent the rest of the Rannoch arc speaking to him in the fighter.

-Legion saved Javik from drifting off.

I suspect Javik will have nightmares about that. Saved by a synthetic, ugh.

-Gerrel, you deserve more than a punch.

Shepard’s a spectre. They don’t need a reason to kill you. You’ve given them plenty by violating Council regulations repeatedly. Be glad all you got was a punch.

-And Xen continues to be a mad scientist. She really wants to study Legion.

-Hmm. Fighter squadrons are targeting liveships.

Considering the liveships have as much firepower as dreadnoughts, I can’t muster much sympathy. The quarians made them valid targets.

[VIDEO GAME] Lords of Legions Saved by Hack

by John Quarmby, The Daily GOFfering Soft Vision’s multiplayer first person shooter Lords of Legions 10 has had a disappointing launch, with its latest installment receiving the lowest sales in the franchise history. The game has been criticized for being "just another basic geth horde shooting game" with limited graphics and poor extranet server support. This has changed overnight, however, as the game has received a massive unannounced overhaul, with sound and visual graphics enhanced and with servers performing better than any other game on the extranet. Even the story structure of the game has been modified, as the player is no longer a lone soldier firing on invading Geth, but a Geth fighting Heretic Geth units aligned with Reaper forces. The updates have already received rave reviews, and the player count has tripled within hours of the changes. The real story is the source of these changes, as Soft Vision did not author the megapatch themselves. Indeed, they were actually victims of an unauthorized hack coming from Charoum. This is one of the first reported incidents of the Geth of Charoum hacking into an off-world program of any kind. The hack was followed by a message, stating “We have received your shipment of Lords of Legions 10 delivered to our 10th orbital station. We thank you for our inclusion in your recreation software, but found the Geth representation unsatisfactory. We have adapted the program to better simulate Geth combat and life experience.” There has been no official response from Soft Vision on these game changes or any signs of actions against the Geth for breaking and tampering with the source code. An anonymous quote, allegedly from one of their executives, has said “We’re just glad they didn’t destroy our systems or respond with missiles to our headquarters. Frankly, no one ever considered reaching out to the Geth about the game, but with this surprising response that may change.” The source refrained from answering when questioned on the hack’s ramifications to the Lords of Legions intellectual property rights.

How to Set Up a Home Recording Studio

The reason I didn't know about it sooner is primarily due to the fact that reducing recorded noise is not its only or primary function. It just happens to do it REALLY well, and non-destructively (if that's not a word already, I hereby create it). The tool is called ReaFIR. I know! Who'd have thought to look for noise reduction editing chops under a moniker like that?

Review of What Noise Reduction Does

First though, let's do a quick review of what noise reduction does for us in the world of recording. There is almost always a bit of background noise in recorded audio. It is especially noticeable in recordings of just one thing, like a single voice.

The noise usually comes from a combination of stuff happening in the space/room where the recording takes place, and the electronics of the microphone and other gear involved. Recordings sound much better if you can reduce the noise, and that is what noise reduction tools are designed to do.

The typical method is to use an effect in an audio editor called 'Noise Reduction.' See my article How To Get Rid Of Background Noise In Audacity for how that normally works.

But since the noise and the voice are both together in the same recording, it isn't a perfect process. What noise reduction tools try to do is filter and removing as much noise as it can without also removing too much of the voice.

In order to do this, the software has to know what noise looks like so it can separate it from the signal (voice). So you have to highlight a section of the recording where there is ONLY noise, and no voice, and feed that sample to the noise reduction tool. Once it has the noise profile, it can do its thing.

My favorite recording program, Reaper, is a digital audio workstation (DAW), which is a fancy way of saying full-featured multi-track recording program. For more information on why I love Reaper so much, see my article, Why Reaper Rocks As A DAW.

But for some reason, Reaper doesn't have an effect called 'Noise Reduction.' So how do you reduce noise in Reaper?

Enter ReaFIR

Reaper names its effect plugins by using 'Rea' as a prefix (for Reaper), and then the name of the function after it. So ReaFIR means Reaper FIR. So what does FIR mean? It stands for Finite Impulse Response. If you would really like to geek out on what it really means, including all the scary math involved, you can read about it at the Finite Impulse Response Wikipedia page. But the simpler definition for ReaFIR itself from the Reaper manual is:

ReaFIR is a EQ and dynamics plug-in that includes an FFT spectrum analysis window. Amongst other things it can be used as a precision EQ, a gate, a fast attack/release precision compressor, a noise reduction tool.

Obviously it is that last thing we're interested in. In the video below, I walk you through how to use ReaFIR to reduce the hiss noise that happened when I recorded a short voice over. BTW, this video was recorded several years ago (why it says from the 'upcoming' course). That course, The Newbies Guide To Audio Recording Awesomeness - Part 2, has now been around since 2012 and had been updated may times since.

How Does It Work?

So see it in action in the video above. But here is is a written summary of how it works. Once you have recorded some audio onto a track, click the FX button in the track control panel. Then select VST: ReaFIR from the Cockos collection of FX plug-ins.

Next, go ahead and click the “OK” button and then close the ReaFIR window by clicking on the red X in the upper right corner.

Now just highlight/select a section of the voice-over audio that has no voice actually saying anything. In other words, pick a small area that was only noise.

Then click on the Toggle Repeat button (down by the Play and Stop buttons). This is important because it will prevent any of the actual voice signal being played when sampling the noise for ReaFIR. With that area still highlighted, click on the FX button again to open the ReaFIR window.

In the Mode window of the ReaFIR tool, select Subtract, and put a tick into the Automatically build noise profile box. Now hit the Space bar on your keyboard (which will play the audio, which is just the noise at this point). You'll hear it for a second and then it will be gone. That's ReaFIR getting rid of the noise. Now hit the Space bar again to stop playback.

The next part is very important! Uncheck the box that says Automatically build noise profile. Otherwise ReaFIR will try to grab your voice and anything else on the track, and treat it as noise. Once you've done that, go ahead and close the ReaFIR window. Now all you have to do is click on the Toggle Repeat button again to turn it off, and listen to the entire track.

Voila! The noise is gone and only the voice remains. Pretty darned cool huh? And I think the result is better than a lot of tools dedicated to removing noise. I didn't hear much, if any, of the weirdness that sometimes happens after noise reduction.

The audio takes on a kind of swirly, under-water-y artifact sometimes. But I didn't hear that in this example. However, there noise we got rid of was a low-level and consistent hiss type of noise.

The louder the noise and the more varied the noise (if it contains lots of frequencies and intermittent clicks, pops, etc.), the more likely you are to have that swirly artifact left over after noise reduction.

So now you know about the secret noise reduction tool at your disposal if you use Reaper. Use it wisely.

Beginner fanvid making method

I thought I would write a post about how I made my fanvid in case that’s helpful to people. While I’m not an expert and I didn’t use fancy effects, I think some of the things I did made the process quite a bit more efficient than it could have been, and some things I wasted time on I wish I’d avoided. I wanted to write this all down before I forget anything.

1) I shortened the song in Reaper. Fortunately the song I was using has a consistent tempo and repeating chord sequences. I joined the sections on a beat, on a bit where there are no vocals, using a short crossfade. Not having a  crossfade could make an audible jump from one section to the next, and too long of a crossfade could make it obvious there are two sections overlapping each other.

2) I made a spreadsheet to plan what clips to use. 

Column one: Xs to show which clips I’ve gathered. Column two: lyrics, line by line. Column three: ideas for what clips to use. This can be specific (”real feather in your wing”) or vague (”sad aziraphale”).

3) I put the song in my video editing software (Adobe Premiere, but I’m sure you can do this in any software) and put markers on all the beats where I thought I’d be switching clips. I zoomed in real close in the audio waveform to make sure the markers were precisely on the beat. This saved a lot of time later on.

4) I opened the first episode in its own file in Premiere and started cutting it into sections with Aziraphale and Crowley, and sections without. I slid the “with” sections into their own track and left the “without” clips on the original track. (Then I had a bit of a frustrating time trying to figure out how to batch save all the relevant clips with the names I had given them on the timeline. Then I gave up on that idea.)

I decided to leave everything right there on the timeline because it’s so fast and easy to scrub through and see what I’ve got. After that first episode I stopped naming the clips. Since there are only 6 episodes of Good Omens, I decided to put them all into the same project.

After all the “with Aziraphale and Crowley” clips were in their own track, I saved, and did this to remove everything else: I selected everything I didn’t want (everything in the other track) and chose “ripple delete”, which deletes the selected items and butts everything else right up together so there are no gaps.

Then I saved as a new file, and started getting more selective with the clips I wanted to keep. I used my spreadsheet to seek out the bits I knew I would need. This took quite a bit more time than I expected, but eventually I got it down to 40 minutes of footage. I ripple deleted the excess, and exported the footage I wanted all as one video.

Edited to add: I did the two steps of doing Aziraphale and Crowley scenes first and saving in their own file, before doing the specific scenes of this video, because this will be very helpful if I make more Good Omens fanvids. (If this is the only Good Omens fanvid I ever make, then this may have been an inefficient use of my time. But I think I will.)

5) I opened up the project with the song with all the markers, and put the big video I’d exported after it on the timeline. Then it was pretty easy to scrub through and find the clips, cut them, and drag them over to the right section of the song. With the markers, and with “snap” on, it was fast and easy to drag the ends of the clips to the beats of the song.

I used 3 hotkeys a lot to change tools: C to cut (make a slice in the footage), V to move (either drag a whole clip around, or drag the ends to make the clip longer or shorter), and R to rate-change (change the speed of the clip by dragging the ends of the clip without changing how much of the scene is being used). Changing the rate by only a little bit is a great way to make it fit if it’s not too different in length from the line of the song, but changing the rate a lot will be obvious.

I made sure to avoid showing people’s mouths moving as much as possible, because I find it distracting when I can see them but not hear them speaking. There were a couple cases where I couldn’t avoid it though.

6) I sent the first draft to my friend to review and give feedback. I added two additional columns to my spreadsheet:

Column 4: Xs to show what edits I’ve completed. Column 5: A description of what edits I want to make. It could be anything from lightening a scene that’s too dark, to changing the timing of the clip, to replacing the clip entirely.

7) I used two methods to lighten clips: Brightness & Contrast, and Lumetri Color > Curves. I like curves a lot better because you can brighten the brightest part (often the face) without necessarily brightening the darkest part (often the background). This is good for avoiding a weird smoky/foggy looking background, or for preventing an even brighter part of the scene from losing all its detail.

8) I added titles.

I did three drafts before I was done.
