Just remembered I can listen to radios from all around the world, and of course I'm tuning in with some radios in the language I'm learning lmao

Finally got around to installing fl studio 21 (yeah I'm pretty late lol) and it was a pretty big upgrade considering I haven't updated since like 2021

Pretty good so far, cursory thoughts

Things I like:

Vfx sequencer is insanely powerful and gonna be fun

Hyper chorus is pretty cool

Multi band delay is cool but intimidating

Kepler is neat

Patcherize button nice

Themes support is nice

I didn't really play with the new file browser but wow it sure is a lot better

Things I don't like:

Kinda wish themes had a hex or color picker color input for primary color and secondary color, where hue sat val knobs are user friendly they make it hard to have a specific color scheme

Where Kepler is cool, as well as the vintage effects, the Skeuomorphic theming is not great for hidpi displays and I find myself squinting and leaning towards the screen to see what I'm doing. I could just be missing a setting though and I don't really care for Skeuomorphism, especially bitmap based ones due to their inability to scale relatively

I'm getting some really bad screen tearing and lag in the piano roll during playback but my computer is old so it's probably just me

Was hoping that I'd see some blender esq node editing improvements in patcher but oh well, maybe in the future

I was having a lot of fun with it though despite these issues and made a fun little trance loop

Doom: The Dark Ages Revealed, And It Hits PlayStation, Xbox, And PC Next Year

Xbox has revealed Doom: The Dark Ages, the third installment in developer ID Software’s modern Doom reboot. And, as the name suggests, it brings Doomguy to a more medieval setting. Revealed during today’s Xbox Games Showcase, The Dark Ages sees the infamous demon defeater shoot and blast his way through a world seemingly inspired by medieval scenery. It will launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC (and Xbox and PC Game Pass) sometime next year. 

Fret not, though. It’s still very much Doom, with plenty of weapons, demons from hell, some fantastic metal music, and a ton of gory first-person shooter action.

As you can see from the trailer above, Doom: The Dark Ages is a visual departure from the rest of the series. The scenery, weaponry, and even the enemies look significantly more medieval than anything else seen in the Doom series. There even appears to be a rideable dragon, too. 

Id Software rebooted the series back in 2016 with Doom, which we loved – read why in Game Informer’s Doom review. The studio followed it up with Doom Eternal in 2019, which we enjoyed even more. Read Game Informer’s Doom Eternal review to find out why we gave it a 9.25 out of 10. 

Interestingly, this is the first Doom game from Id Software and publisher Bethesda Softworks since Microsoft (and Xbox) acquired Bethesda parent company ZeniMax Media in 2020 for $7.5 billion. Many have speculated how Xbox will handle exclusivity with its recent years of acquisitions, including whether future Doom, Call of Duty, and other popular IPs now under the Xbox umbrella will get multiplatform releases. It seems, in Doom’s case at least, it will still come to PlayStation, which makes sense, considering Doom and Doom Eternal were released there as well.

Thinking the unthinkable

On SEPTEMBER 24th, I'll be speaking IN PERSON at the BOSTON PUBLIC LIBRARY!

Time and again, I find myself thinking about radium suppositories: specifically, I get to thinking about the day that the consensus shifted from "radium suppositories are great" to "stop putting radioisotopes up your ass."

The thing is, people really liked radium-based quack remedies. They drank radium-infused water, smeared radium cream on their faces and bodies, and yes, rammed radium suppositories up their assholes:

The fact that this made whatever ailed you sicker didn't deter the radium true believers: if you're getting sicker, then you must need more radium.

When I think about the debate over radium, I imagine that the people who understood that radium was really bad for you must have run up against critics who told them they were being unreasonable. "You can't tell people to stop using radium. Tell them to use suppositories with less radium. Tell them to use them less frequently. But you can't just tell people, 'stop putting radium up your asshole.' They won't take you seriously."

About 20 years ago, I started pitching various institutions that reviewed consumer tech policy on the idea that they should reject any product that had DRM. After all, DRM didn't just restrict how you used a gadget today, it provided a facility for nonconsensually, irreversibly field-updating that gadget to add new restrictions tomorrow. How could a reviewer in good conscience say, "Go ahead and buy this device if you need this feature," if they knew that at any time in the future, the gadget's maker could take that feature away and leave the buyer with no recourse?

Here's the warning I (half-seriously) suggested magazines run alongside such products:

No one took me up on my offer. Over and over again, magazine editors, managers of nonprofit review outlets, and indie gadget reviewers told me that it was unrealistic to publish a roundup of, say, this year's portable music players with the recommendation, "Just don't buy any of these.
