Darling Charming and Hair

So @eahcomforttrash brought up in discord that Darling deserves a moment to chop all her hair off as a rejection of her Charming powers, and that thought seized me so hard that I decided to draw her hair journey instead of working on my other projects!

For those who haven't read the books---first off, go do that, @/athena-xox has them all digitally for free on her pinned post---second off, there are a lot of characters that have freaky magic abilities that never come up in the show, including the Charmings. Daring has his physically blinding smile (which is in the show), but Dexter can make girls swoon and faint with his gorgeous eyes (this isn't brought up often because his glasses null the effect), and Darling can slow down time for a few seconds by flicking her hair.

(This also sorta turned into a clothes journey lol).

So! Let's get into it shall we? In depth analysis under the cut, cuz it's gonna get long!

Top Left, Pre Way Too Wonderland Reveal:

I actually really love Darling's hair pouf. It's so impractical and extra and reminiscent of actual European royal's hairstyles, which is PERFECT for someone who is desperately attempting to cover her rebellious activities and dressing extra royal. Darling (in the books) explicitly puts a LOT of time into making her hair be the perfect princess-y style her mother taught her to do, so I think the pouf is very in line.

I am less a fan of the canon colors. In the books, her hair is described as platinum blonde, which is great! But I really really dislike the blue and white combo from the show because I just don't think her parents would LET her use hair dye. How scandalous! How newfangled! How non-traditional! How. . .rebellious. Darling is trying to convince them she's NOT being a rebel, and I don't think she'd be gutsy enough to ask for forgiveness OR permission on this one.

Unnaturally colored hair is actually very important to me in EAH. The only other royals who have dyed hair are Briar (dissatisfied with her destiny, behaves contrary to social norms, will later sympathize with the rebels), Duchess (has her whole thing about not really fitting with the royals and ALSO being dissatisfied with her destiny), Lizzie (from Wonderland and thus has a very different perspective on the whole thing, and also possibly has the red naturally), and Rosabella (who had bad writing all around and didn't exist until quite late in the series, but who I like to think of as more of a Royal in name only).

So giving Darling an unnatural hair color is a good thematic indicator to people who haven't read the books that Darling is actually a rebel (along with her metallic accent being silver like the rebels instead of gold like the royals), but it doesn't make sense diagetically (unless she's washing it out and re-dyeing it every day, and who's got that kind of time). So I tend to draw it without the dye before Way Too Wonderland.

Similarly, the books also describe Darling putting a lot of care into her outfits and makeup to look not just princessy but also TRADITIONAL. She's not willing to do anything risky, even something as small as lipstick instead of a perfect tiny touch of gloss. I think she'd definitely wear the MOST makeup during this period.

I LOVE that the show has her outfit resemble armor, but I do think it's a little too obvious (she's wearing entire PAULDRONS, I think someone's gonna notice). It doesn't show super well from just the bust, but I compromise by SHAPING her outfit identitically to a suit of armor (hence the lace collar area). I also never draw her in anything form-fitting during this time, because she's super buff and doesn't wanna be showing that off.

I also think that Darling and the color pink are important, but I'll save that for another section.

Top Right, Sometime around Dragon Games

I think after her big reveal in Way Too Wonderland, Darling would do a hard turn into being ALL rebel, ALL knightly, no princess ANYTHING allowed AT ALL.

Importantly, I don't think this is who she really is authentically. She is a mix of a princess and a knight and also just herself. But after being forced into SUCH a traditional look for SUCH a long time, I think she'd feel very sick of it all and just jump off in the opposite direction.

This would very importantly include cutting off her hair, and with it, her powers to slow time in a pinch. Darling is really annoyed that she has these powers, but she makes VERY good use of them in the books, including one instance where she literally saves Maddie from banishment. So I think, in her fit of passionately rejecting her destiny, her family, and her role as a princess, she'd cut her hair and dye it all the way. And then she'd slowly start to realize she misses having both her time powers and also just long hair.

During this period, I also don't think she'd wear ANY makeup ever, would wear her armor casually a lot more (partially because she can now, partially to flex what she can manage in full plate, and partially because donning and doffing armor takes a while and she's not that fast at it yet). Her casual outfits would likely be very plain, and extremely masculine.

I think it would take a little bit of being like this before she starts to have some realizations along the lines of "oh wait, I actually DO like these feminine things, just not these ones. Or wait, maybe I did like that, just not the traditional version of it I was forced to do." In my perfect world, this is how she would spend ALL of Dragon Games, and I think the events of that special would give her some time to think about what she actually wants in her personal style now that she has freedom to choose.

Bottom Left, Post Dragon Games, possibly next school year:

This is kind of Darling's fully evolved form to me. I think, at this point, she's spent her time looking like a perfect traditional princess and she's spent her time doing the complete 180 from that, and she's now realized that the place for her is actually somewhere in the middle.

I think she'd grow her hair out longer, but not as long as it used to be. Enough that it can be pulled into a sensible ponytail, occasionallg styled, and flipped for usage of her time powers once again, but not much longer than that. I also think she'd finally reach her colors in the show, putting in blue streaks, but keeping some of her Charming blonde present.

Weirdly enough, I also think this is when her clothing would be closest to the show, with some armor like elements (the casual-wear pauldrons and the. . .battle corset? Thing?), but also lots of casual ones. I think she'd swap fairly frequently between skirts and pants, and would wear some makeup, but it would be less than she used to, and probably more adventurous in color and style when she does.

I also gave her a scarf like her brother Dexter, because I think it's cute <3

Bottom Right, Nightgown/Unstyled pre Way Too Wonderland

This is kinda how I headcanon Darling looking before the reveal, but without styling herself to look extra traditional. This was mostly so I could get a feel for the shape, color, and texture of her hair when it isn't pulled into that pouf, but now is also a good time to talk about the pink.

So, in the books, Darling strongly associates the color pink with a series of really boring classic "princess gets rescued" fairy tales that she was forced to read instead of the adventure type novels she was after. She thinks of the color as a signal for the traditional values she hates. So in her earlier outfits, while blue is still her main color (she is a charming after all), I think she incorporates EVEN more pink than in canon. All accessories, all makeup, all extra layers are gonna be pink (hence the pink sash in her nightgown here).

During her time completely shunning her heritage, she wouldn't wear any pink at all ever. All blues all the time. But Darling is still a Charming princess. She was still born into a royal family with a lot of influence and privilege. She still has Charming magic powers. Her heritage doesn't HAVE to be a marker of oppression. She can take it and use it as a tool for good.

This ties in to my greater agenda about wanting Dexter to have to teach his siblings how to interact with commoners and how to use their privilege to help other people rebel, but I think that during that arc, Darling would slowly reclaim pink as a part of her color pallette. Yeah, it's the princess color, and she's a princess. But that doesn't mean she HAS to be helpless. She's still wearing armor and rescuing folks herself. It IS another tool in her arsenal.

Being a princess means being very persuasive and good at convincing people to listen to you. It means having a lot of money, which never hurts when you're using it to fund a cause. It means having easy access to authority figures and being able to get your ideas to the right people. When you're trying to make BIG change, you need every resource you can get, and there's something very poetic about using the same ones that once imprisoned you to help free so many others.

Anyways, those are my intricate headcanons on Darling's appearance, and there will hopefully be a follow up with the full versions of her outfits!

The Last Battle

I think about this episode a lot.

They are in the middle of the rebellion against the Empire and get pulled into a Clone Wars battle, and we watch as Rex momentarily forgets where he is and calls out for Cody in an attempt to orient himself.

But this isn't the Clone Wars and almost all of Rex's friends are dead. He lost Anakin (I have no idea what he knows about Vader at this point). He lost Obi-Wan. And he eventually lost Ahsoka too (not long before this episode took place).

There are a couple of moments in this episode where Rex snaps at Ezra. ("Battles leave scars. Some you can't see." Kanan used it as a teaching moment for Ezra.) Ezra never fought in the Clone Wars. He was born the day Palpatine executed Order 66. Kanan had limited experience because he was so young when the war ended. Younger than Ahsoka. And Rex remembers having to fight against his own brothers in the end because he knew that Order 66 was wrong.

The war was traumatizing, and Ezra's inexperience mirrored Ahsoka's own inexperience when he first met her on the battlefield, but he met Ahsoka before he experienced all of the horrors of the Clone Wars, and he's meeting Ezra after surviving a war he was meant to die in.

He was used to a Jedi with a blue lightsaber and a Jedi with a green lightsaber leading him into battle together during the war, and once Ezra switched his lightsaber color to green after Malachor, Rex is seeing the same thing with Kanan and Ezra as he's heading into this battle against Kalani (the same droid general that Ahsoka, Saw, Lux, Steela, and the other Onderon rebels fought against during the Clone War...ironically all of the rebels were trained by Anakin and Rex).

And this battle did end in victory, but it was a victory for both sides. Ezra was able to find common ground between both sides. The Republic and the Separatists were both set up to lose and finally understood they had all been nothing more than pawns in a war that didn't make any sense.

This ends up being closure Rex needed. The clones and the droids had been programmed to fight in war and were decommissioned once they served their purpose. They were able to put aside their differences and work together when it mattered the most though.

And Rex lived to fight another day.

I'm re-watching Rebels because Kevin Kiner is a god, and like, beheading the comedy relief characters 13 episodes into a kids show sure is a choice.

Also me, to anyone that will listen: note the use of the taiko drums to bring us back to Ahsoka's samurai/Japanese aesthetic as opposed to the Mandalorian's cowboy/Western aesthetic; the presence of non-Jedi force-users such as loth-wolves and purrgils suggesting Ahsoka's continued journey engaging with the Force beyond the Jedi-Sith binary; the weaving in of historical Star Wars soundtrack motifs such as Where the Sun Sails and the Moon Walks and Burying the Dead; and the exquisite timing & placement of actors' names within the sequence e.g. Natasha Liu Bordizzo when Sabine's theme from Rebels begins to play, David Tennant in the visually busiest and connected section of the star map indicating Huyang's long life and extensive connections, and Eman Esfandi at the visually most lonely part of the star map as the journey line heads into isolation. Also note the intensification of the taiko drums during Sabine's theme, an intriguing juxtaposition of the "Jedi" (/samurai) identity and "Mandalorian" (/cowboy) identity, linking both identities with Sabine, and linking Sabine and Ahsoka in the audience's mind. “Excuse me?” Grounded in the rural town of Shelby Springs, veteran Terry Richmond noticed your own steps moving down this federal corridor.

“Yes?” You've turned around mid-stride when someone catches your attention.

Goodness gracious.

Towering this muscular build as he chose one fitted shirt, veteran Terry Richmond offered unexpected height as his striking gaze reached your direction.

“I left the police station this morning and I don't have representation yet. Do you know anyone available?” His deep yet gentle voice nearly shook up your presence.

“Depending on your case, finding assistance could be difficult. Most of us scramble here with many circumstances.” Clearing your throat, an explanation offered the truth.

“Are you swamped?” Richmond handed out the question for obvious reasons.

“I might as well be.” You sighed while holding this briefcase. “This town is so small that you'll cough and everyone will know about it.”

“I just need help if something goes wrong.” Terry knew better.

“Follow me. Let's speak in private.” You offered this path while heading elsewhere.

“I'm sorry if there's too much going on, but how can I move forward?” Richmond sat across from you while placed in this cramped office.

“No chance in hell.” Struggling with advice, you shook your head after learning Terry Richmond's case. "Just show up on Monday like the Chief said or you've lost an opportunity.”

“He's not very nice.” Richmond settled his frustration regarding Sandy Burne, the arrogant Chief of Police.

“Burne is only tolerable if folks put up with his nonsense.” You say. “Defiance gets your ass kicked out.”

“I'll be gone if everything stays in order.” Terry just wanted to leave this place with his cousin Mike alive.

“Be careful out here.” Your voice cautioned. “The police department has more resources than everyone else.”

“Does Burne know who you are?” Terry still looked out.

“Enough to keep me working.” You almost scoffed behind the desk. “Tight skirts always make money. There's so many perverts that I even collected wedding rings for this side of town.”

Damn. Richmond thought.

“Apologies for wasting time.” Terry stood from the chair and gathered his backpack, ready to go.

“Here's my contact info as a safeguard.” You exchanged phone numbers.

“Thank you, Ma'am.” Terry nodded, leaving this establishment.

“Terry! I heard the news. Where are you?” You picked up this phone in broad daylight.

Reports explained drama that bled from the corrupt police station.

“At the hospital. Medics started helping Summer McBride.” Richmond acknowledged one of the other legal assistants.

“What's the next plan? You can't stay here forever.” Your voice warned again.

“I've figured out a settlement.” Terry explained further. “We locked enough proof to shut everything down.”

“What should I do?” You didn't even know what to think. “Summer's probably knocked off from ailments.”

“Please pick me up from the lobby.” Richmond continued speaking. “I lost my bike and just gave back one of their police cruisers.”

“Okay. Stay there.” You snatched car keys without thinking twice and rushed out of work.

“Terry!” You honked while staying in that driver's seat and Terry jogged outdoors, circled around to meet the passenger side.

“Thank you.” Despite expressing gratitude, Richmond couldn't smile when you punched the gas to avoid more problems.

“Where should we go, Terry?“ Given no other choice, you kept driving. “With Burne still mad, you're better off leaving this place.”

“Come with me.” Richmond pulled his deep voice again.

“What?” Squinting, you nearly pulled the car over right now.

“If I couldn't help Mike and Summer get out of here, maybe there's a chance with us.” Terry offered.

“I….” You've made one turn and led Richmond near the airport.

“No matter what happens, we'll keep looking out for each other. Deal?” His words revealed this vow.

“Deal.” You hurried to park the car before gas would run out and reached Terry's hand while entering that larger terminal.

“No luck?” Terry snuck from behind as you work with your laptop by the kitchen table.

“Stop it!” Laughing, you almost swatted him away as this rare yet adorable smile brightened his face.

“I'm asking.” Richmond pointed to the main screen.

“Working soon.” You grinned while confirming another placement.

“Aight, c'mon…” Hardly responding, Terry lifted your weight and carried you over his shoulder, leading this moment upstairs.

“Wait, put me down!” Your laugh would echo straight through his mind forever.

God though there's something CHILLING about the Eye of Sion.

Like--the realization of what an ISD-sized hyperspace ring means, the inherent propaganda coup of bringing back the fucking Chimera is a bad thing, yeah, but I'm talking immediate emotional impact.

Because the thing, is, right--there's a Trope at play here.

And the Trope is that...this is a top-secret evil space project, you know? This is Morgan Elsbeth's Evil Masterpiece, her refuge-in-audacity strike at the heart of the New Republic, operating in the open under their very noses, etc. This is the 'Eye of Sion', the dark weapon that will restore Thrawn to the galaxy.

So it's just sort of...expected, with the way this kind of story goes, that the Eye of Sion would be a WARSHIP.

That's just the trope, you know? All this time, all thes resources--it's supposed to have impenetrable armor and some kind of fucked-up new atomization weapon and maybe some murderous AI, it's supposed to have bristling firepower and impossible maneuverability and a massive swinging dick--it's supposed to be Thrawn's Newer And Badder Flagship TM, the terror of the galaxy.

It's not.

It's a hyperspace ring.

That's all. It's just a hyperspace ring.

All that time, all those resources, all this secrecy, the death, the sacrifice...And the Eye of Sion is a hyperspace ring. It has token point defense, and they've had nothing but time in which to do some very nice interior decorating (which is, compared to the cost of the ring itself, a nonexistent price tag) but. It's not a battle station. It's not a flagship. It's not even a light cruiser. It's a piece of tech that was already old-fashioned during the Clone Wars.

All those resources went toward a single, solitary purpose. One journey. Two hyperspace jumps. There, and back again.

That's how difficult it is, this thing they're attempting. Those are the stakes. All of the Imperial Remnant's remaining resources went toward this project--and the result is nothing more or less than a single, massive, unprecedented hyperspace ring.

That's all they think they'll need.

It would have been so much less intimidating if she was a warship.
