5. Sickly / Sweet (x) (983 words)

Etho flips an egg. It's. It's not working. It's not. It's not the eggs fault that it won't cook right or the pan's fault that it won't cook even or the carton's fault for having three eggs that refuse to cook right. But he can't. The egg is too hard. There's a short breath caught in Etho's chest. He’s not. He’s not frustrated with this. It’s fine. So he puts the egg on another plate. And he cracks another one. There are three eggs on the plate. Bdubs will eat them. Ren will not, but he will be glad they’re made for Bdubs. It’s fine.

He burns his egg.

It sticks to the bottom of the pan and he stands there with the burner off, staring into the charred edges of the egg too cooked and singed. He takes a long breath. He does, he really tries. And then he starts scraping.

He scrapes at the pan to get the egg off. It unsticks but the charcoal is going to ruin the taste so he keeps scraping it. He stands there and he scrapes and he lets his brain fog over and just stands there.

“Etho, hey, good morning, love.”

Etho looks over, but he realizes his mouth is still in a fine line. He doesn’t try to fix it. He turns back to the pan. His mind loops the situation, the steps.

“Etho...hey,” and Ren’s voice gets very soft. Not. Not demeaningly soft. Just, collected. It’s a voice he uses sometimes with him and it mutes every other sound. It quiets them. He hears Ren step over, somewhere in his periphery, the known shape of him. 

“It’s okay,” Etho says in a voice not all there. Ren very slowly puts his hand over his, lets Etho decide whether or not he’s going to pull away from him. He doesn’t. Ren takes his hand between both his own, squeezes ever so. 

Ren doesn’t say anything else. There’s enough in the hands around his own that Etho can make his own sentences. It says something like let me, something like it isn’t worth the strain. So Etho lifts his hand from the handle of the pan, and Ren’s hand drifts to his elbow, still gentle, still holding. When he steps back, Ren keeps him at his side, and Etho stays to rest his chin on Ren’s shoulder. 

“What’s happening?” Ren asks as he wipes the pan out. Etho sighs. His inflection is enough that the question he’s really asking is something else.

“Dunno,” Etho says, pressing his cheek against his shoulder. Ren’s tail swishes, thwapping him in the leg when he does that. He smiles.

“One or two?” he asks.

“One is fine.”

Ren’s hand drifts to the carton. Etho shuts his eyes.

“Promise?” Ren asks. 

“Yeah,” Etho says. He fusses with the hem of Ren’s shirt. “I’ll be okay to eat lunch.”

Ren nods, something he feels more than sees. He feels him kiss the top of his head, just so, before he listens to the sound of egg frying in the pan.

“Hey you two.”

If Etho were to crane his neck around, he might be able to see Bdubs pause in the doorway before he enters. He instead catches a glimpse of him as he rounds his shoulder. He reaches out and Bdubs catches his hand, pausing by his side.

“Hiya, Dubs,” he says, cracking one eye open. Bdubs squeezes his hand.

“You alright, sweetheart?”

Etho shrugs halfheartedly.

“‘M okay.”

“You sure?” Bdubs raises his eyebrows. Etho shuts his eyes again, shrugging, goes to speak, floundering, mouth opening and closing. The answer is no. But Bdubs finishes: “Nah, don’t...don’t say anything, it’s alright. I getcha.”

Bdubs skirts past him, letting his hand go.

“Eggs, love?” Ren asks Bdubs.

“Hm?” Bdubs hums. Etho watches him look over at the plate on the other side of the stove. Bdubs nods. “Sure, sure, I’ll have the leftover ones. I’m just gonna put the kettle on and hop up here.”

“Careful,” Etho says, reaching his hand back out again. Bdubs takes it, bending to kiss his knuckles. He lets Etho let go first.

“Yeah, yeah, I’m always careful,” Bdubs smiles. He sets the kettle on the burner before he hops up onto the counter. Etho sighs, shifting to press his forehead to Ren’s shoulder. The world hurts him a little less, now. Water bubbles in the kettle. It drowns out the sound of the cicadas outside.

“You guys are too sweet to me,” he mumbles into Ren’s shirt.

“Too sweet?” Bdubs laughs a little. “Etho, we’re doing the bare minimum.”

Etho sighs, trying not to sound pathetic. “I know, I just...” He scrunches his face, still buried for the most part against Ren’s shoulder blade. He feels Ren laugh. Thwap. His tail wags. (If he were to look up and over his shoulder right now, he would see Ren plating an egg that’s just over easy enough. And toast, too). Ren says:

“I saw you were getting frustrated,” and shrugs a little. “It’s my job to help.”

Etho huffs.

“Not necessarily,” he says, unsticking himself from Ren’s shoulder. He rests his chin there instead. Bdubs reaches out, poking his hip with his foot.

 “Mm, no,” Bdubs says. “I’m sure it’s in the job description.”

Etho groans, worming away as Bdubs tries unsuccessfully to poke him again. He narrowly evades Ren’s grab at his hip and manages to flounder his way to the kitchen table. Bdubs does grab him at some point, throwing his arms around his ribs and pressing his cheek to his back. He squirms, he really does, but then Ren’s scooping him up in his arms too and he’s being crushed between them. He sighs. He’s an Etho sandwich. His chest feels full to bursting. It’s not a cure-all, but it certainly feels good.

Etho smiles.

“You guys are the worst.”

a few final thoughts:

gem says she's not a mind controlled mess like sausage, and it's true she doesn't seem to be actively controlled, but there's almost definitely at least an influence of some kind.

like in Sweethearts Never Met when she gave the egg to fwhip she was scared. something was happening to her, she couldn't control it, and she didn't like it. Now she's waxing poetic about the corruption (and she's damn good at it too i was like 'yeah ok that sounds pretty beautiful' at points)

side note. i love stars. i love the night sky. i love this whole thing being set against a meteor shower that's SO PRETTY

So I’m multifandom. You’ll probably mostly see me talking about Legend of Zelda, and Houseki No Kuni, but I like Paper Mario, Sonic, Deltarune, yadda yadda yadda lol. What do I post about?

People say you brag because you compare your unoriginal, passionless, boring books and two dimensional characters to works from authors like Tolkien and GRRM, and even attacked readers who criticized your books and racist, queerphobic and ableist behavior.

(vague character ethnicities, unconfirmed until book 3 or so, kept reblogging whitewashed pics because popularity mattered more to you, queer and mentally ill villain who gets killed off, incredibly ableist narratives)

Get a grip and stop playing the victim smh

You get what you give. Don't want negativity? Stop being a source of negativity yourself and leave readers alone. Check your (rich, white, cis, straight) privilege and understand that every piece of work is subject to criticism. Writing is a job like any other and customers (aka readers who PAY for your books) have every right to criticize a product.

Being a writer doesn't make you special and exempt from criticism. There are millions if not billions of writers and you just got lucky.

You think the internet forgot your behavior. It didn't. It won't.

Ah, gotcha. I think the disconnect here is the confusion between "comparing" and "tonal reference." I'm pretty upfront about the fact that my books are, obviously, not on the level of some of the most influential books of all time. I don't recall attacking readers for very valid and necessary criticism, most of which I agree with. I have written several posts here on Tumblr regarding character ethnicity and my failure to properly describe characters in the first RQ book. As well as my blindspot when it comes to the "white default." I am very grateful to the readers who took the time to educate me on this, and it's a lesson I've hopefully taken with me into later books. I realize now that when I'm not clear on character descriptions, that can be harmful in the future, and that a lot of readers default to "white" when given no description at all.

I have apologized for reblogging whitewashed fancasts back when I debuted, and it's something I continue to regret. I do realize it's easy to label and say SHE DID THIS THING 8 YEARS AGO, SHE IS PROBLEMATIC FOREVER. And if someone wants to pass that on, there's nothing I can do. But I am grateful, again, for the readers who corrected me and explained how harmful that was. It was another vital lesson I learned on this very, very long journey as a writer. I don't expect the internet to forget these things, but I am hopeful that people also see growth and changes made in all of us.

Regarding "killing off a queer and mentally ill" character - I assume you're referring to Maven. Yes, he is both those things. No, he is not the only character who is queer and/or mentally ill (I would argue most characters in RQ are mentally ill if not scarred). I don't subscribe to the idea that queer or mentally ill characters cannot be anything but "good" characters. The world is much more complex than that. But that's a completely separate discussion.

I do agree with you. I try not to be a source of negativity and do ignore the majority of the very negative, cruel things sent my way. I simply cannot take those things on. I do try to engage with posts like this that have valid points or questions, and are hopefully sent in good faith.

And I absolutely agree with your point on criticism. My work is out in the world and critique is not only a reality, but necessary. I welcome and enjoy good critique of my work. It's helpful, and makes me better. But some things, particularly personal attacks or mean-spirited jabs disguised as critical commentary, don't fall under that umbrella. And I think we exist in a very small community, united by our love of storytelling. So it really sucks to feel smacked by the same people you thought were your friends or at least your compatriots.

But that's a dynamic I'm coming to terms with, as an author in this community. I used to be a maladjusted teenager who found escape in stories and the book community, but it seems that place isn't for me anymore. Somehow publishing a book has set me apart in a way I don't understand, and dehumanized me to many, many strangers. I am darkly comforted in knowing that most other authors experience the same alienation.

gonna start this out w saying i did mildly speedread through jojolion so i dont have as many big screamy thoughts

their canon interactions r the cutest thing and even if they werent, id ship it solely to spite joshu

josuke is a million trillion times better for yasuho (not just bc of how joshu is a fucking freak and is absolutely the worst i would run him over with a dump truck)

i really like how they both r so happy around each other but i think my favorite scene w them is when yasuho has to explain to josuke that hes crying and hes just like :') yeah

but they have so so many cute moments and the ending makes them the only couple to make it out of this list

i love how yasuho is just like willing to drop anything to help him and how they help each other out a lot during the whole time (if im remembering right?)

i love all of yasuho and josukes interactions but oh man every time that josukes past gets brought up i do start bawling

they both mean the world to me and how their romance is just built on such a clear foundation of trust and care it makes me so soft

ALSO ok the way that yasuho helps josuke w his memory and is always there for him

to everyone who is just wandering into RQG tag after we're trending: hi! we're fans of an actual play podcast by Rusty Quill, based on the TTRPG system Pathfinder, and which is named Rusty Quill Gaming! you might've seen us trending before, as well as our fellow RQ podcasts, such as the fantastic improv satirical comedy based on a capitalistic sci fi nightmare, Stellar Firma, or the heartbreaking and oftentimes terrifying in its emotional core and worldbuilding horror by name of The Magnus Archives!

we're coming to the finale of its first and longest running (6 and a half years in progress!) campaign, Erasing the Line, finishing next week on 1st of December, on 218 episode.

the campaign itself revolves around the alternate universe Earth, in 18(mumblemumble), where magic and fantastical concepts exist in everyday life, and most of the world is ruled by a dragon Meritocracy. all of this is built by its Game Master Alexander J Newall, with the players being Bryn Monroe, Lydia Nicholas, Ben Meredith, James Ross, and (a later, but not the least important addition) Helen Gould, who together have created an incredibly compelling story full of amazing characters, some of which being alternate versions of real historical figures, such as Thomas Edison, Nikola Tesla, Albert Einstein, and many more!.. yes, Oscar Wilde is also there. no, don't ask me why he's so important. yes, I cried about him on podcast at least three times, but that's irrelevant.

it's one of the AP podcasts that I can, and do, recommend on par with such giants like The Adventure Zone and Critical Role, and for me personally? it's even better.

yesterday, I have written a thread on Twitter, giving my thanks to everyone involved in the podcast's creation, and to the people within fandom who have created the wiki, many fandom events, and participated in the community in every way possible while I was being a part of it. and I would greatly appreciate if you, reader of this post, if not retweeted the beginning of the thread, then at least looked at all these names, at the tags I've mentioned, at the creations we've done, and maybe, just maybe, decided to look into what sort of creation RQG is.

if you are one of the fans of our fellow Rusty Quill fandoms, checking it out is so much worth your time. I came into it from The Magnus Archives, and, honestly? it's my favourite RQ podcast. and just my most favourite podcast ever, period.

thought of how the "Aziza looks like woman Hamid" is played for laughs from Bertie's perspective, but let's say it's not. let's say that they're similar enough someone might've jokingly compared them to being twins separated by time in the past. and with how Hamid might've not had the opportunity or moments to cut his hair during the weeks (I think now months?) since the day Aziza died... imagine him, surviving the end of the world, now with longer hair, maybe even tied hastily with a ribbon or a tie, catching a glimpse of himself in a mirror and mistaking it for Aziza for just enough moments to remember that she's gone, and Hamid is still here, just suddenly breaking down... pain.

((like, i feel like this trend is precisely why drama isnt fun anymore. why people are so stressed out by dash drama, especially the hemoism drama tbh, to the point they just dont wanna be part of it anymore. if you make someone’s muse angry enough, theyll “ic block” you and then their friends will be less likely to talk to you as well and then you get less “hey this character looks fun and someone i trust follows them” follows. it essentially makes your muse an outcast, which isnt fun to play.

I used to get ic blocked all the time, but it ALWAYS was temporary. I could say and do what I wanted ic and then if someone “blocked” me for it i know they would unblock later. It wasn’t forever, becaue then there would be no chance for similar/related ic drama again and it basically wasted a connection that could change mine and the other person’s muse.

This idea of an ic block being permanent has made it so i feel unwelcome to cause any sort of a problem. Like, its gotten to the point of being so realistic that i feel like differing opinion to the norm = bad problematic blog go die in a cave. Like, i get that ooc, but ic drama and shit isnt real.

Ic drama and ic discourse shouldn’t come with the real possibility of harrassment, people blowing up from all sides without warning, and permablocking. roleplay is supposed to be for fun. the discourse between fictional aliens shouldn’t be just as emotionally draining and terrifying as defending your rights on the internet in real life because real life drama and discourse is NOT fun. its NOT good for this community for this to be taken to this realistic level.

and like, i will add that this is being said by someone who is kinda lowkey kin with the character they play. so like, if I CAN handle the separation of real life and in character rules, you all totally should be able to handle it.

yeah. ic blocking is a great tool to tell a story, but it’s a really bad tool to end a story. honestly imo a solution to every ic blocking situation would be, in the event that it happens, both muns talking asap about how the inevitable unblocking would go. which then, of course, leads into more discussion of why ooc communication is so vitally important.
