Checking it twice
Jay sat at the kitchen table, making an attempt to wrap the last presents, swamped by wrapping paper and his to-do list of gifts.
"Don't you touch that," he said without looking up when he noticed his stanley knife slowly sliding away from him. Like he was living with a cat trying to swipe the ribbons...
Zayne grinned and sat across from him. "Do I get a present, too?"
"I don't know." Jay bit off a piece of tape. "Have you been nice this year?"
"So nice."
"I think Santa's scale might tip more towards naughty."
"I'm house sitting for you. That's nice."
"You're taking advantage of the fact that I'm away for four days, that's not house sitting. Also doesn't cancel out months of literal torture."
"Speaking of torture..."
Jay sighed and picked up the stanley knife again before Zayne could swipe it and compare its sharpness to his own knife. The hungry look on his face when he slid it easily through the wrapping paper didn't go unnoticed.
"If I give you a present," he started, "will you promise to leave me alone the days before Christmas so I can go see my family without limping?"
"Hm..."
"Peace on earth and all that?"
"What present?"
"There's an ice cake in the freezer. Meant to bring with me, but it won't survive the trip. All yours."
Zayne got up without a word and Jay heard the crunch of the freezer door behind him. Heard an eager and somewhat impressed "Ohh" and some rustling. Then Zayne slid into his seat again.
"Deal."

I still want to put Wren in a box
As you wish! Of course I ended up with more than 100 words, so it's an almost-quadruple drabble.
Set in the Berkeley's Revenge AU.
contents: recapture, muzzle, restraints, trapped in a small space, referenced carved mark and amputation.
~~~
“I could use a break from having to see you, Rackham. Your face pisses me off.”
Wren glares up at Berkeley from inside the huge cardboard box he had been pushed into. As much as he hates to admit it, there’s nothing he can do, muzzled, forced into a curled up position with his wrists cuffed behind his back and his ankles restrained. Berkeley snorts and closes the box, and Wren grimaces as the sound of pulling duct tape fills his ears. He’s never been claustrophobic, but his stomach still sinks when Berkeley seals his new temporary prison with layers upon layers of tape. He’s trapped, and he has no idea how long he’s going to be left here, and he can barely move and the muzzle makes it harder to breathe and-
Calm down. He exhales and closes his eyes. Just stay calm until he opens the box.
He can’t give Berkeley the satisfaction of hearing him protest and struggle, and that thought helps him tune out all the other ones.
He hears Berkeley sit down on a chair with a satisfied sigh, and a moment later he flinches when the top of the box sinks with a creak, as if-
Ah. So he’s being a footstool again. At least this time it’s indirect, and he doesn’t have to feel Berkeley’s boots on his back. It’s the small things.
“At least you make a decent footstool,” Berkeley laughs, and Wren frowns. “Maybe I’ll just make the box into your new home? It’s cozy and I won’t have to look at you too often. Sounds like a plan.”
Wren’s heart skips a beat, but he forces himself to relax. It’s bearable. No matter what Berkeley does to him, he can survive it. He has survived so much already; being stuck in a stupid box is nothing.
It’s just that the box is yet another thing on top of the word carved into his chest, the loss of a finger, the forced haircut, the threats, the constant reminders that he’s going to be killed. He’s going to be okay, he’s going to be saved, he is - but as he’s lying there, in darkness, sick and tired of having to stay strong and only rely on himself, he bitterly wishes that his rescuers would hurry up and find him already.
The battery isn´t strong enough to feed the machine. Not anymore.
The battery can barely process what is happening when it´s dumped outside. After almost a year of fighting to live while hooked to the machine, its wrists are numb and bloody. It had crawled around for a long time now, so putting its legs under it when dragged and pushed was something it was no longer accustomed to doing. That was no excuse to try and do better for Master, the battery knew. So it tried its best to walk again until Master kicked it out on the street.
“Get lost” Master spat at it shutting the door behind them.
Where? The battery had nowhere to run to anymore. Master made sure of that. They had made sure it knew that millions of times.
The battery had become loyal and would go wherever Master told it to. Sensing Master was mistaken about their order, the battery waited. Kneeling at the door with its head down, it waited for the order on where to go.
An hour passed by in a blink.
Then two.
The battery blinked once, then twice before bracing itself for a beating for knocking on the metal door. It was outside, but the battery was not restrained… had Master forgotten? The battery’s head pounded as it sat back, catching its breath before standing up using the wall as leverage, and then trying to open the door to go back inside.
The world blurred around the edges as it would sometimes after losing food privileges, but the battery pulled through and kept trying to open the door.
It shouldn´t be outside. Its place was next to Master and the machine. But… the battery’s world smudged as a smell of dirty rain flooded its senses, only noticing a moment later it had collapsed on the floor.
The battery was outside because Master had wanted it. There were no shackles around its wrists. It had been released from its duty…
Then, was this…Freedom? No, the battery still had the collar around its neck. It was anything but free.
A test? No, its Master doesn´t play silly games like that.
The battery pulls the last of its energy to sit on its heels, kneeling, before the closed doors.
“W-Where should I go now, Master?” It tries in a hoarse voice. It doesn´t mind waiting a few more hours for a reply that doesn´t come. Its life had consisted of endless waiting, after all.
It´s by the time the day dies into the night, that it realizes Master was long gone from the other side of the door.
The battery’s hair clung to its face as the water poured down on it, dripping tears its body couldn’t make anymore.
The weight of its Master´s words crush it, but what was it but its Master´s battery?
Its orders were clear.
Limping heavily, it stands up and walks away aimlessly. It had stopped being human a long time ago. It had turned into just a battery for whatever plans its Master had. It was a tool and without a Master, its life had no meaning or direction. A complete waste of space.
A waste of space doesn´t deserve a bed to sleep and rest in, nor does it deserve to eat or have a name. A waste of space doesn´t get to have the collar Master gave it as proof of their ownership.
The battery decides it's not needed to take off the collar to burn it from where it hangs against its throat. Such considerations are reserved for humans. Using just a little bit of its powers to set it on fire shouldn´t be a problem, but just brushing their fingertips against the lock makes it immediately drop its hands back to its sides.
No, no. No touching. No using its powers when not hooked to the machine. Merely hours away from Master and it has forgotten already? No. Can´t break Master´s rules even if they don´t want to be its Master anymore.
But then, now that it’s been discarded, is it allowed to touch? Or is it not allowed? Would it be punished for keeping it? Which is the correct answer? It doesn’t know.
That´s why a battery needs a Master. Because it is no longer a human, it can´t take decisions for itself.
After pondering a little longer, it gives up on coming up with an answer it’s not capable of getting before it crawls into a hall in the wall.
The place is dirty and so tiny, the battery has to fold its legs and neck to fit. It’s so tight, it can´t help but relax, letting out a purr of contentment at the familiar sensation of containment. At least this is a feeling it knows well. Stored, like in the cage.
Would Master come for it if it waited there? No, once useless, Master wouldn´t even spare a look. The battery slowly closed its eyes.
Then, would any of Master´s friends take it like they threatened to do before? It was a broken battery now, though. He couldn´t even be useful and use its powers anymore.
No wonder Master had discarded it.
Did a broken battery still have some use to someone?
---
It woke up to the sound of voices and barks.
The sun was still rising, painting the sky a tint of pale pink and orange. The rain from the day before was now just a breeze that froze the battery’s thin body. It was a couple of young men, taking their mean-looking dogs out for a walk on a leash. The battery felt a shiver down its spine at the sight of the shock collar and muzzle the animals wore.
It had tried to curl further into its hole when one of them peaked in.
“Oh? What do we have here?” The guy wearing a red beanie whistled as his friend came to stand next to him.
“What?” The man looked into the hole and found the battery cowering away from the dog’s snout “…is that a person?”
“Seems more like a rat to me” The battery wouldn’t disagree, given how small and contorted it was. “Why don’t you come out and let us have a better look, hm? Or are you hiding something important in there buddy?” The man whipped his arm and grabbed the battery so tight it yelped. The man pulled it out swiftly, making it land right next to one of the dogs. The battery quickly covered itself when the dog’s mouth came close to its face, curling into itself defensively as it heard the young man laugh.
“There’s nothing here,” the other clicked his tongue.
“Maybe it’s on him” the guy with the red beanie replied, pulling on the dog’s leash when it kept insistently wanting to jump on the battery. By its drooling, it figured the muzzle was the only thing keeping it from biting it. “Hey, you,” the man said kicking away the battery’s arms from its face “we won’t give you trouble if you give us what we want so just be…” the man trailed off as his eyes settled over the battery’s neck. “What the fuck? Is that a dog collar?”
The other guy stretched his neck to stare too, but when the battery tried to scurry away from it, the guy stomped on its chest. It looked at it for a moment before snorting into laughter “holy shit, it is!”
The dogs were restlessly barking and pawing at it so hard, its ratty clothes began to tear. The man pulled on the dog’s chain leash before passing it to the other guy so he could inspect the battery’s collar. It was forced up to its knees with a sudden strong tug from the D ring on his collar, choking it slightly as it struggled to put its numb feet below it.
“Woah, it’s even locked,” the man said pulling on the tiny padlock, and then, hooking a finger between the leather and its neck, cutting the battery’s airflow until it whimpered and the man let go with a gritting laugh. Then he grabbed a fistful of its matted hair and forced it up to its feet, only making it fall back to its knees.
The battery’s head snapped to a side when he slapped it.
“Hey, hey! Do something, man” he slapped it increasingly stronger “Defend yourself, man! Say something! C’mon!” They repeated the process over and over before one burst into laughter. “He won’t even try to stop me!”
Suddenly the slaps turned into hits and fists rained over the battery’s body. It tried to put its hands around its head but the other man kicked its arms off, the force of his kick turning the battery’s body.
Even when they stomped on it, even when they pulled it up only to batter it down, the battery didn’t say a single word.
It was not allowed to speak to anyone else but Master.
Once they got bored of hitting it without getting even a single yelp out of it, they unleashed the dogs.
It was a moment where the battery debated simply letting them maul it or running. Its legs were numbed out from hours of sitting in the same position, but the ache suddenly vanished when it broke into a sprint, the two dogs dashing behind.
Air burnt through its lungs as it poured every single crumb of energy into running. It knocked over containers and trash to stop the dogs, but it was useless, as the dogs easily caught up to snap their teeth barely centimeters away from their ankles.
The battery saw its chance to lose them when it tried to turn on a corner, but the puddles of dirty rainwater were everywhere and so, it drifted, losing its balance before ultimately crashing against the floor.
It only had time to open its eyes before the dogs jumped on it.
—-
Everything hurt even more now.
The battery lay still over a puddle of its blood hours after the dog’s owners had put them back on their leashes and ran off when the battery stopped moving. Even when its arms and legs were little more than rags now, the battery was somehow still alive.
The battery’s shaking hand passed over its neck, wet with drool and dirty puddle water, and found the collar ragged to shreds instead of its neck.
Somehow, Master had saved it, the battery thought to itself hours later, when it could gather enough strength to try and crawl back into a better hiding spot. The oozing blood from its wounds smeared on the ground as it dragged forward.
It hadn´t meant to come out of its hiding, but after days inside the hole in the wall throwing up an empty stomach, it was delirious. It hadn´t meant to land on some poor girl´s head when it thought it had seen Master.
Of course, it paddled away when it noticed its mistake. Dropping its head to wait for punishment, fearing deep in its soul the woman would somehow begin hitting it or even worse, unleashed fiery dogs to chase after it again, but the battery didn´t receive anything but a perplexed look.
“Is that…Are those dog bites?” the woman asked with horror at the half-moons covering the entirety of the battery’s body. Some of them were so swollen and infected they let out a smell the woman had to cover her mouth with both hands to not throw up.
“-ase…” The battery lowered its head until it touched the floor, the coolness of it sending a shiver of bliss through its body “Please…Water…Mas-ah, please…juss…a little…please” it begged, forcing itself to straighten itself and failing so miserably the woman rushed to hold it. Did the world always have that many funny colors? It wondered as its vision swam and it began to only catch glimpses of what happened before it.
It caught the streets, then a door. Then someone was vomiting while it laid down on something so soft it almost cried. Was it a cloud? It certainly felt like one.
After that, it was red. So red and blurry, the battery was sure it wouldn´t open its eyes again.
But many times, it did. It opened its eyes to a blurred world that slowly, with each new time it forced its eyelids open, the world became a little clearer.
It was a very spacious room at the beginning, but then it became clear it was some tiny plastic hovel in someone´s garden. The door leading out to it almost always closed except for the times the woman would come in to check on it. Angrily yelling at it for squirming its way down to the floor before pulling it back on the sofa.
The battery still found ways to not lay on the furniture but on the floor, where batteries should be.
The woman had stopped trying to pick it up and had instead pulled the covers and pillows down on the floor.
It had been adamant at first, squirming itself out of the comfort and warmth of such things meant for humans before the woman had growled at it.
"Cleaning these every night for you is turning bothersome, ya know? If you´re not gonna get on the couch, I gotta make sure you´re at least a little bit warm. Or what? Are you gonna force me to tuck you up every night as if you were a kid? Don´t even think about it"
The battery was forced into the covers like a burrito many nights after that.
Neither were very happy about that, but the woman watched the battery relax in them after a while. For the battery, containment was no stranger. If this was this woman’s way of keeping it controlled, then what was a battery gonna say? She wasn’t its Master, but it had learnt to not refuse any treatment others gave it.
In a way, the wrapping made it feel like being hooked up to the machine again. It was tight, but not so much it wouldn’t be able to squirm it’s way out of the blanket like with the machine, with its openings specially designed to fit its arms and not let it move away even an inch as it sucked its energy.
The familiarity of the situation made it expect things. If it was contained, would it just be a matter of time before punishments came? It had denied food that was given freely before, but the woman’s simple scolding before she forced its mouth open wouldn’t last long. It would be hooked to a feeding tube soon. It was so sure, that when the woman pulled on her hair and then put a spoon on its hand, the battery didn’t drop it out of disobedience.
It was simply too shocked to hear her say “he” should know how to use a spoon.
A battery was an object others used because they only served one purpose. “He” was not used for the batteries. But the woman kept calling it “him”.
When it dressed its wounds with brand new bandages, when it was helped into a bath because “he” reeked. Even when she gently tried to pull it into the couch, the woman referred to it as “he”. She was gentle but severe when the battery refused to receive human things. Even when she was so frustrated she pulled on her hair, she didn’t see it as something inhuman undeserving of the help she was giving it.
It learnt even her kindness would end one day, when she was talking on the phone with someone when he waited for her to come in on the morning.
“I’ve seen everything in this streets, Marshall. And I mean that! But a man who refuses to take off a dog collar on his neck gotta be the worst of all. He was little more than a corpse when I found him but even when he didn’t try to run away the first chance he got, he refuses to act like a normal human being. Do you think this is more of a mental thing? Like, this boy has been through it, no doubt of that, but just what exactly leaves you acting…like that?” There was some buzzing words “I don’t know, I honestly want you to check on him ASAP. I just can’t shake this feeling that I’ve seen him before,” the battery’s heart throbbed “eh? A picture? Another one?” More buzzing. The battery saw her turn at him for a second before turning away “well, his face a little less swollen now, maybe there’s hope to finding out who I have been taking care of, finally”
The battery’s heart stopped at her words as she continued to talk.
The battery knew why and how it had become it’s master’s battery. The life before that had ended when the collar was put on. It was for the better. After all, the battery’s past life had ended with them when they died on the other side of the room.
The battery couldn’t let her know all of her help was given to that despicable thing that didn’t deserve anything else but being hooked up to a machine until it died. It was its master’s battery to repent, it didn’t deserve the help she had given it in the first place, but she…didn’t deserve to learn it had given so much help to a murderer. Even when it had never meant to kill them.
But that was the battery’s sin. It lifted its hand in the woman’s direction.
The battery never meant to hurt anybody, right?
But the battery couldn’t help it.
It had been so long since it had used its powers like this, but panic overcame it when the woman turned with the phone pointing at it. She couldn’t figure who it was. What it had done.
Their powers were a little too strong for a dumb battery to control. That’s why they had died and that’s why a battery needed a Master and a machine: to be properly used.
The waves of energy flowed like a river though its fingers, lighting up the very tips before the world tensed and wrinkled. As if space and time had become a paper it could fold, the battery’s finger shot a light that pierced the woman’s phone before she could even notice it moving.
“What the fuck?!” The woman screamed as she let the fried phone fall of her hands into the floor. She stared at her phone for a second. The display had melted so, a hole the size of her thumb had appeared. She blinked at it for a second before looking up at the guy in the floor with a hand up in the air, shaking like crazy.
“Don’t” the battery panted before turning its head to vomit blood.
That tiny amount of power wouldn’t have been accepted for the machine. But that was all the battery could use when it was discarded. it thought maybe after a month it could at least use this much, but oh it was so badly mistaken. The battery’s nose and mouth dripped into the floor as it heaved, gasping for air its lungs rejected.
“Y-You did that? That thing you just did, I have seen it before!” The battery whined, knowing he had failed to cover the truth. It had to go now. This woman’s kindness was over. “But- But they said you had died! No way in hell you are-!” The woman’s voice died on his ears as the battery crumbled into a pool of his own blood.
The battery watched in a blurred world how the woman reached for her phone before stumbling into the house beyond the garden.
It had no time to lose now.
Hadn’t it had worse? This little blood would have been any other day before.
Stand up.
The battery obeyed its master’s voice in its head. Sticky blood marking its clumsy attempt of lifting itself and walking out the hut in the garden, the sun blinding its eyes for a second before it walked out. Rushing away as the senses came back to it and it heard the woman screaming as sirens began to ring closer and closer. It broke into a sprint into the forest when there were many voices screaming at him with threats of having weapons and yelling at it to stop running.
Everything hurt so much. The pain was too much to bear.
“Freeze!”
And the battery jumped down into yet another hole. Such was its luck the battery managed to jump into a sewer that spat it out in a beach. The battery, half drowned and covered in feces, crumbled down unconscious in the sand.
-
It woke up at night. Carefully sitting in its knees before looking up at the city before it. How long had it been since it could see it’s hometown like this? The battery’s eyes filled with tears before it gathered the courage to stand up.
Help wouldn’t come for batteries.
Once anyone knew who it was, any help and kindness would end.
It didn’t matter how or why, whoever killed a hero was nothing else but an evil villain. And the battery? In a single minute, in one single hit, it had killed nine. Projecting the scene to the world to show who betrayed them before taking the battery into their base and hooking it up to the real machine.
River, the youngest of the eleven heroes, had died with them that day to be reborn as the Master’s battery when he was abandoned by his own team.
Note
Maybe a silly question/concern/request but the first two links of the Safe House Arc for your team whump series (https://www.tumblr.com/redstainedsocks/646742377312239616/spy-whump-masterlist) aren’t working for me. Idk if it’s on my end or yours but the other links in the masterpost work just fine so ¯\ _(ツ)_/¯
(Btw I really enjoy your writing; you really capture the emotional core of your characters and their dynamics!!!)
Oh! Hmm, curious, I will attempt to find the right links and fix that. Thank you for the heads up. I'm glad you're enjoying the reading 😁
Part 11 of the Hostage series, princes and pirates and imprisonment, oh my.
 Masterpost is here.  Tagging: @redwingedwhump, @whump-cravings, @burtlederp, @quirkykayleetam, @annablogsposts, @redstainedsocks
“I don’t understand,” Jak said. “Don’t you want to go home?”
His face was creased in bafflement, his hands dangling off his knees as he sat in the chair.
Rill awkwardly smoothed a hand over the sheet beside him on the bed, futilely seeking order in the creases and folds of fabric. “It… isn’t that simple,” he said.
“Why not?”
“It… it just isn’t,” Rill said. He sat back, leaning against the wall, and covered his face with his hands for a moment. “Your uncle sent you in here to question me about it, didn’t he,” he said, mildly accusing.
“Oh, sure,” Jak agreed readily. “But that isn’t really why I’m asking.”
“I just don’t want to be ransomed.”
“Do you think your folks can’t afford it?” Jak dismissed that with a wave of a hand. “If so, talk to Tallow, it can be a token amount. More to save face than anything. Tallow would always rather get something than nothing.”
“It’s… it’s not that…”
Rill sighed heavily. He took his hands away from his face, but still did his utmost to avoid Jak’s eyes - Jak, who was now sitting across the room from him, worried and earnest and apparently content to sit there looking at Rill for as long as it took to get an answer out of him.
Guilt plucked uneasily at his nerves. Back when they were imprisoned together, Rill hadn’t really intended to lie to Jak. It had just been… easier not to broach the subject. And what had it mattered, anyway, when they were both likely to die soon?
But then they hadn’t died, and it had moved from being just an omission of irrelevant information to a lie. And that lie was keeping him safe, he couldn’t abandon it no matter how bad it felt to be lying to Jak, who had saved his life for no reason and didn’t seem to expect anything at all in return.
Jak was a friend to Rill the Nobody. Would he still be a friend to the Prince Consort?
Well, Rill didn’t really intend to find out. No matter how long Jak sat there, frowning with the force of his concern.
“It’s not an amount of money that’s the problem,” Rill said, trying to skirt the issue, talk about it without talking about it. “It’s more that… I don’t want to be more of a burden than I already have been. It’s just… better that I stay away.”
“What? Stay away?” Jak shook his head. “And leave them wondering where you are, whether you’re dead? How is that better for them? You just want to disappear out of their lives? That’s fucked up.”
“I’m not disappearing,” Rill said. “They knew where I was. They will assume the Empire killed me.”
Could they be partially right? he wondered. Could the Prince Consort be dead and just plain Rill crawl away from the shell? The prospect wasn’t... terrible.
“And that’s awful!” Jak protested. “When you could go home safe and be happy - ”
“I don’t think I do want to go home!” Rill burst out. “Jak, they left me there!” He could not stay sitting any more. He pushed up off the bed and lurched upright, turning his back to Jak. There was no room in here to pace, not with the both of them in here. He settled for clenching and loosening his fists as he spoke to the closed door, his voice uneven. “Look, I’m not saying they made a bad choice or the wrong choice, but they left me there to rot. Did Tallow tell you that? The Empire asked for more than I was worth, so they left me in the Empire’s hands knowing full well what was happening to me.”
Rill heard Jak shift behind him, but he didn’t want to turn around and see his face. Rill was breathing a little harder, his throat burning. His eyes, too, which wasn’t usual.
“How am I supposed to - how can I - ” He rubbed a hand over his face. “Jak, how are you supposed to go back home after that? They’re not going to understand. I don’t blame them. But I just…”
He trailed away. The sound of his breathing filled up the room for a few seconds.
“Well, you probably should,” Jak announced.
Rill turned, startled. “What?”
“Blame them! Gods, man!” Jak slapped a hand down on his thigh. “What do you mean, you don’t think they made a bad choice? If they could have saved you they should have! That’s family!”
Rill managed a smile, through his prickling eyes and the lump in his throat.
“Jak…”
“More than you were worth! Calling yourself a burden! Bah!” Jak leaned back in his chair, spreading his hands in a ‘what gives’ sort of gesture. “Rill, who talks to you like this? Getting you back safe from the Empire should have been worth any cost!”
“In, uh… the idea is right,” Rill said, unable to find the words in Castar for what he meant. “The idea, the theory, sure, a life is worth anything. But that’s not how it works in the real world.”
“Yeah, it is.” Jak folded his arms and looked mulish.
“Well, what about lots of lives?” Rill asked. “You’d trade lots of people for one person?”
Jak shook his head. “Not trade lives. Risk lives, maybe, it’s different.”
Rill sank back down to sit on the edge of his bed. “It isn’t, really,” he said. “I can be… er, what’s the word in Castar for ‘objective’? No?”
Jak shrugged, nonplussed.
“I can look at the big picture.” Rill coughed into his arm, wincing at the pain. “One life isn’t worth many. It was the right choice.” Why did I bring this up, he wondered. Why get all choked up about Tali leaving me, and then explain in great detail why she was right? Why does this hurt so much? I don’t know what’s going on in my own head, how can I expect anybody else to?
“Look, I don’t see how this changes things,” Jak said after a moment. “OK, sure, you think they were right not to save you. You are wrong, but whatever. Why does that mean you can’t go home now? Uncle’s not going to ask to trade you for a dozen people.”
“No,” Rill agreed. “I suppose not.”
“So tell him who you are and go home!”
Rill bit his lip. He looked down at his hands, which were starting to heal up from all of the bruises and cuts he’d gained during his time in the army camp. He ran a thumb idly over a healing scab.
“Jak… what if they say no,” he whispered. “What if they still say no? They might not even entertain a negotiation.”
Rill was not sure he could take that.
“Do you really think that’ll happen?” Jak said, hushed and frowning.
Rill shrugged. “I don’t know. Like I said, I’m not… even before I was stupid enough to get myself captured, I wasn’t exactly the most useful to have around.”
He picked at the roughness on his skin, pulled it back to bleeding and watched the bead of bright red well up on his knuckle. Little merchant clerk, not good enough for the Queen’s hand. What use are you? A captain in uniform, very close by the Queen’s side. “Truthfully… they’ve probably replaced me already. It’d probably mess up a lot of people’s plans if I went back.”
After all, Rill being gone would solve a lot of political problems. Couldn’t be a lightning rod for political discontent if he died tragically, could he? And the new nobility would have no cause to complain. And Tali could finally get the kind of husband she’d always wanted.
“Who cares?” Jak demanded. “If I were you, I would take joy in messing those people’s plans up. They shouldn’t count you out so easily.” He leaned forward, making the chair creak under his weight, and pointed forcefully at Rill. “The more I hear out of you, Rill, the more I think maybe fuck your family. They’re not worth the name. You have to go back to make them eat their words! Be great and make them all regret valuing you so little.”
Rill rocked back, startled. The smile he found on his face tugged unexpectedly at a scab on his lip. “That’s what you’d do?”
“Absolutely,” Jak said firmly.
“Well, I’m not you, Jak,” Rill said. Which was unfortunate - if Rill had been more like Jak, the court would probably have liked him more from the start anyway. “I don’t think that would work for me. But thank you.”
Jak subsided, looking a little deflated. “You’re still not going to tell us, huh?”
“No,” Rill said. “I’m not.”
“If we asked and they did say no, Rill, I wouldn’t let anything happen to you,” Jak said. “I don’t really think Tallow would go through with killing you. He already likes you more than most Mainlanders.”
“I don’t think that’s true…” Except insofar as you all seem to hate us as default…
“We would figure out… something,” Jak continued. “Some other way to get the money, maybe, or some way you can work and still stay here. The ships pick up a crew member from one of the safe ports, sometimes - not often, but it happens, Skyle told me about it.”
Rill smiled sadly. Or, Tallow will contact the Empire and let them know he has a bigger prize than he thought. I highly doubt I’m going to be welcome as crew on a pirate ship, as funny as Tali and the council would probably find that.
“No,” he said aloud. “I’m sorry, Jak, but I’ve made up my mind. I’m not being ransomed. I’m not going home.”
And whatever happens will just have to happen.
Whumpmas in July Day 7 - Underrated Whump
@redstainedsocks Kit's Story. It's since been discontinued, but I was obsessed with it. The casual domesticity of the horrors Kit faced and the responsibility he was put under... I reread this one frequently.
@quietly-by-myself Mercury, Titanium, and the Balance of Time is SO GOOD. It's finished and it's so emotional and the characters in it grow and develop so so much in the series' run.
@whump-only was the first series I read on here that was just straight up slavery whump and I was like 'oh cool other people like that too'. Guppy's story is so sad and I just love him so much
WIJ Day 4: Story that gives me whumperflies
I’m gonna go with the most recent thing that’s given me a ton of whumperflies: Zach and Archer by @redstainedsocks
It’s a spy/team whump type story, and I’ve never read anything quite like it. And omg I love it so much. We have defiant whumpee, conditioned whumpee, a golden-hearted caretaker, secret whumper, espionage, betrayal, so much mental torment, and a whumpee who is finally “home”-but is he safe? (NO)
There’s a lot already out, and I’ve only read like less than half, and I’m purposely taking it slow cause I want it to last longer lol. It is so so good and an overflowing well of whumperflies. I encourage everyone to check it out or add it to your read list! (But heed the warnings)
And here’s another moodboard for Jonah - young Jonah this time :) When he was still happy and trying to get stuff sorted out after the accident... He studied and he loved swimming and skateboarding.
Fluffy trope switcheroo... for a caretaking character carefully helping scarred and maybe wounded character quickly cover up and hide their injured body, so that they don't have to deal with anyone else staring-- redstainedsocks 👀
@redstainedsocks sorta ended up with when that doesn’t happen as quickly as it needed to...
They’d found him.
They’d found him, but the nightmare was far from over.
Camera after camera flashed, each burst of light highlighting his sorry state in stark detail. She’s thrown a blanket over him as quickly as she could, she’d chased them away, but it was too late. Day after day, his bruised and bloodied body was all over the news and social media, reporters knocking on the door, shouting questions he didn’t even want to think about answering. Even as his body started to heal, his mind wouldn’t and why won’t they just leave me alone please I don’t want to talk about it I don’t want to see it I don’t want to see it I can’t keep going on like this please please just shut up shut up SHUT UP SHUT UP LEAVE ME ALONE-
There was one place no one else would bother him. No one else would see him. His pain could be private, his alone. He left her a note, he didn’t want her to worry. To come looking. He breathed in deeply and rang the doorbell.
“Well, well, look who’s come crawling back.”
Jaybird screaming in the dead of night
Home is where the hurt is: Part 1
-
“Hey Jay,” Zayne sang, slowly, menacingly, butchering ‘Hey Jude’, while swirling himself around the corner into the kitchen startling Jay. “Don’t be afraid.”
Jay, at the first notes of his name in rhyme, turned away from the counter and his dinner prep, his eyebrows raising in surprise and the hairs on his arms in alarm. Just hearing his name in song gave him many reasons to be afraid. He raised his chopping knife in an automatic response, just holding it out in front of him.
“Drop the knife,” Zayne said, now stepping forward and emphasizing his words with the click of his own knife, flicking it up, “Unless you want to compare which one is sharper.”
His kitchen knife might not be as sharp, but it was coated in onion juices. Not an experiment Jay wanted to engage in. With a loud clank, he dropped it in the sink, falling another step back.
Zayne kept advancing on him, slowly, backing him into the dark corner of the kitchen, talking and waving his knife about with every step. “So, I just bumped into your neighbour, downstairs. Or well, he almost fully crashed into me, really. So I shouted after him, holding the door open for him, ‘Hey, what’s the hurry?!’ And you know what he shouted back?”
Probably, yeah, Jay had an inkling of where this was going. And how it was now going to bite – stab – him in the arse. But he kept his mouth shut, dread stealing his voice and knowing Zayne would continue his terrorizing monologue anyway.
Which he did. “He said, ‘Sorry, I’m late!’. So I asked, ‘Late for what?!’” The conversational tone fell away as he leaned forward against Jay, one hand brushing against his, pinning him to the kitchen counter. “Work,” he breathed in Jay’s face. “He was late for work.”
Jay leaned back as far as he could, hands on the edge of the counter, arms bending. He tried to make a soft hum in feigned surprise, but it turned to a soft but sharp inhale as the knife was brought up in his face.
“You never told me he works night shifts,” Zayne crooned, brushing the flat of the knife over Jay’s jawline.
“I mean, it never really came u—”
“But then it all started making sense, you know. How you always tried to hold back on your screaming in the afternoon. And here I was, making an effort to keep the noise down at night…”
The knife fell away from Jay’s clenched jaw, dropped against his clavicle and disappeared under his collar. The cold sensation turned sharper, gradually pressing into his skin.
“Well, no need to worry about that now, you don’t have to hold back. He just left. You can scream as much as you want.”
~
~Bonus~
Zayne leaned back and pulled the kitchen knife from the sink.
“What were you chopping?” he asked, turning the knife back and forth as if he could analyse what was on it (instead of, you know, looking back).
“Onions...”
“Hm.” He swiped his own blade over the knife as if sharpening it, making them sing a threatening tune together. “Do you think it stings in more than just your eyes?
“You don't need onions to make me cry,” Jay tried to goad him into dropping the knife. He didn’t need a dual-wielding Zayne.
Zayne merely stared at him, eyes softening to a fond expression as he was mulling it over and the stupidity of Jay’s words hit him.
“You’re right,” he said, to Jay’s short-lived relieve. Then his tone shifted and he merely whispered: “I don't.”
So me and @redstainedsocks were just having a lovely little conversation and i had an android whump thought, which was that androids have no means to tell the time except what their internal computer is telling them.
so if they got captured, they'd have no way to know how long passed between them being shut down and waking up, since they wouldn't be hungry, or their hair grown or anything. and if the whumpers messed with their programming they could make the whumpee think days had been months. that their friends had completely forgotten about them.
voila, ANGST
if anyone fancies writing this, pls tag me, I do love to read about androids going through the wringer, thank u :3
if you're interested and willing: would love to see wren having a bad day (depressed/frustrated/etc) and seeking out comfort from daniel unprompted, and daniel's reaction to that
[SV-240 masterlist]
contents: forced relationship whump, slavery whump, creepy/intimate whumper, depression, creepy comfort.
~~~
"What's wrong, sweetheart?"
At least, Wren thinks, Daniel still knows that something must be wrong when he sits down next to him of his own free will; and something must be even more wrong when he leans his head against his captor's shoulder.
It's not a good day. He's not in any physical pain, he hasn't been tortured in a while, but that just means that torture is approaching, which doesn't help.
It's just depression, really. It almost feels trivial in this nightmare, but he can't deny there's no way to avoid depression in his situation, and… maybe it had been there even before the kidnapping.
Apparently it took being kidnapped and sold for him to realize his mental health has been in shambles for a while.
Today he needs comfort, but continuously reminding himself that he’s going to escape does not cut it. He needs touch, contact, but the only person who could provide it is the one who’s been hurting him this whole time, making him depressed.
Maybe he could make it work, get that much needed touch and closeness while forgetting that it's Daniel giving it to him.
"Can you be quiet?" Wren mutters, closing his eyes.
"Why?"
"Because I just need you to hold me and not say anything and let me feel like shit in peace."
Daniel huffs, amused, and wraps his arm around Wren, holding him closer. Wren is tense at first, but when he realizes that Daniel seems to have agreed, he allows himself to relax in his embrace.
“You know you shouldn’t be ordering me around, right?”
“I’m not,” Wren groans. “If you want to punish me, then whatever, but later. Please.”
“Alright.” Daniel’s voice is soft, affectionate, and Wren doesn’t know - nor does he care, really - whether the word carries with it the promise of punishment or forgiveness.
Daniel goes back to reading - Berkeley had brought some new books, so he has plenty to read; on second thought, Berkeley’s recent visit might have contributed to Wren’s foul mood - not saying another word. Wren takes a deep breath, keeping his eyes closed, and tries to get far away from the house. He’s curled up on a couch, or an armchair, or a bed, in a living room, or a bedroom, it doesn’t matter; he’s sitting on something comfortable, and, more importantly, he’s being held by… someone. Someone without a face or a voice, who, after a minute or two, starts to run their hand up and down Wren’s arm, gently, like they could never do harm.
He knows their name and just how much harm they’re capable of doing, but he has to pretend he doesn’t. Right now the person is nothing more than a source of comfort he so desperately needs, and they want nothing in return. He’ll have to open his eyes eventually, face his captor’s delight at him seeking out his touch like this; it’s the price he’ll have to pay for this moment of peace.
Eventually, when he escapes, there will be no price. Until then, trading tiny bits of his determination for tiny bits of comfort is all he has.

List 5 things that make you happy, then put this in the ask box for the last 10 people who reblogged something from you. Get to know your mutuals and followers! -- redstainedsocks
1. Decorating for Christmas. I'm in charge of putting up the lights every year and the feeling of seeing them all lit up at night for the first time makes me feel all warm and fuzzy. Since I'm feeling extra tired this year I'm probably going to start this week so I can take my time.
2. This lovely group of pain fans that make up whumpblr make me smile every single day. Couldn't have made it through this year without you guys.
3. The froggos that live on my back porch. I'm a little worried about them actually because they all relocated when my dad started taking out the sliding glass doors. I hope they're ok.
4. Whenever my best friend Jonathan calls me. Dude is insanely busy and still calls to check on me every day. Idk what I'd do without him.
5. The Mandalorian. This season is giving us some sweet whumpy moments and I have a feeling we're going to get a bunch more.
