Reggae Camp 2023
Reggae Camp 2023

Stories That Heal: Powers of Bibliotherapy
STORIES THAT HEAL… I’ve always felt at home when visiting the public library. It’s a place where, regardless of your race, ethnicity, bank account or zip code, no one there ever made me feel as though I didn’t belong there. Ever since I heard ‘The Little Engine That Could’ during story time years ago, I felt the power of books and stories. Over the years I learned how bibliotherapy has helped me…

Bob Marley Assassination Attempt
Michael Manley, son of former Prime Minister Norman Manley, was elected Prime Minister of Jamaica in 1972. To address growing inequality in Jamaican society, Manley embarked on several democratic socialist reforms of the state, including land ownership reform, free education from primary to university, and nationalization of certain industries. Such policies had massive popularity among many people in Jamaica, but there were others who either saw the reforms as contrary to their businesses or as a high precursor to a Cuban-style communist government. Beginning in 1974, he was also opposed by the more conservative Edward Seaga of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP). The JLP used the threat of socialism to build support among property owners and churchgoers, attracting more middle-class support. By 1976 the two politicians hired local gangsters to help them increase their hold on power.
The 1976 elections marked the beginning of a period of political violence in Jamaica. A State of Emergency was declared by Manley's party the PNP in June and 500 people, including some prominent members of the JLP, were accused of trying to overthrow the government and were detained, without charges, in the South Camp Prison at the Up-Park Camp military headquarters.
Reggae musician Bob Marley announced plans to hold a concert in an attempt to quell the violence. Politicians from both parties were hoping to capitalize on Marley's support. While Marley remained neutral, many viewed him as tacitly supporting Manley and the PNP.
At 8:30 pm, on December 3, 1976, two days before the Smile Jamaica concert, seven men with guns raided Marley's house at 56 Hope Road. Marley and his band were on break from rehearsal. Marley's wife, Rita, was shot in the head in her car in the driveway. The gunmen shot Marley in the chest and arm. His manager, Don Taylor, was shot in the legs and torso. Band employee, Louis Griffiths took a bullet to his torso as well. Astonishingly, there were no fatalities. [Wiki].

Actor and musician Brinsley Forde MBE was born 16th October 1953 in Islington, North London.
He achieved early success in the children’s TV series Here Come the Double Deckers (1970-71), which was co-produced by 20th Century Fox and screened on BBC1 and ABC America.
Having appeared in two episodes of the hit London Weekend Television sitcom, Please Sir, he had a significant and memorable role in the 1971 movie adaptation as Wesley, with his character a critical part of the storyline. Having been accidentally left behind by the coach on the way to the school camp, he hitches a ride with Penny (Jill Kerman), convincing her that the benign and totally sincere teacher, Mr Hedges (John Alderton), is in fact a racist slumlord, leading to a number of comic encounters and confrontations.
Tumblr media
(Given the standards of the time in UK television comedy, the writers, John Esmonde and Bob Larbey, and LWT, seemed to have a generally enlightened attitude in terms of race. LWT had been previously stung by the debacle of Curry and Chips (written by Johnny Speight) which had attracted the attention of the Independent Broadcasting Authority and Race Relations Board in 1969. As a result, both Brinsley Forde and fellow student Aziz Resham (Feisal) were able to shine in their own right and even poke fun at some overcompensating liberal attitudes, to their own advantage.)
Tumblr media
Brinsley Forde went on to numerous other acting roles. He is a Grammy nominated musician, and founding member of the legendary reggae band, Aswad, which in amongst numerous international hits, had a UK number one in 1988 with Don’t Turn Around.

Mind of Mine is the debut studio album by English singer and songwriter Zayn. It was released on March 25, 2016 through RCA Records, and was released one year after his departure from One Direction. Primarily an R&B and alternative R&B record, the album blends elements from various genres, including pop, folk, dub, soul, funk, electronic, Qawwali, hip hop, reggae, classical and soft rock. Upon release, it was met with generally positive reviews, with praise for Malik's new musical direction and his vocal performance.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The album was influenced by the music that Malik grew up with, primarily his father's urban music records, including R&B artists R. Kelly, Usher, Donell Jones, and Prince, rappers Tupac and Biggie, and reggae artists Gregory Isaacs and Yellowman, as well as Bollywood music.
He cited rapper Tupac's All Eyez on Me as the album that had the biggest impact on him, stating that it is "so real, and from a perspective of a place where somebody is not afraid to be completely 100 percent honest." He said, "as I grew up, it really helped me to understand that it’s OK to be honest with your art, because people appreciate that."
In an interview with NME, Malik explained the album's title: "It's really reflective of the whole experience that I want to give the listener. I wanted it to be almost like a brainstorm. It’s just music and it’s just whatever you’re feeling at that moment in time."
Talking about the recording sessions with Billboard, Malik's main collaborator for the album James "Malay" Ho said they have gone to unusual lengths in pursuit of inspiration, for one "we went camping for a week in the Angeles Forest – set up a generator and a tent so we could track in the woods." James Ho is a Grammy Award winning producer, whose past work includes Frank Ocean's Channel Orange and Big Boi's Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty. "I'll come down here [the recording room] and record maybe seven songs a night," Malik told the magazine. "I’m enjoying what I’m doing. I’m not censoring myself anymore."
Ho described Malik as "pure genius" and noted that most of the vocals were recorded in just a few takes.

Tumblr media
Camp Hawk, est. 1953 in the small town of Hawkins, Indiana, was designed to ignite the spark of creativity in young teenagers in the hopes of keeping them off of the streets. As years go by, one of the great consistencies throughout generations of Hoppers is their belief that if schools were to take the arts more seriously, kids would go on to live more enriched lives.
And what better example to lead by than the constant flow of counsellors that opt to graduate from their years of being a camper themselves? It's tough to get the campers that grew up with them to refer to them by their counsellor names, but the Eagle himself, Jim Hopper, sees for himself year upon year how well the kids take to respecting their peers once that extra boundary is in place. It's not just former campers, either - despite it being so small and discerning, Camp Hawk is one of the most sought-after for counsellor applications.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Argyle - Canary: A newbie fresh in from Lenora Hills, California. Rocking up in a beaten-up pizza delivery van, blasting reggae music, Hopper was about ready to turn him away before his tyres could track through the parking lot, but his partner, Joyce, insisted Argyle be given a fair shot. Hopper doesn't care much for Argyle's laid-back approach to life, but his offer to create the brand new role of cooking tutor impressed the camp operator enough to hire him. Argyle's always been the kind to throw caution to the wind and let it drive him, but now that he's graduated, he's got to prove himself. He thought getting his job at Surfer Boy Pizza would prove his responsibility, but no dice there. Perhaps this job will help him get taken seriously.
Nancy - Oriole: Hopper's never played favourites, of course not, that wouldn't be fair - but relief certainly swept through him when he saw the name Nancy Wheeler amongst counsellor applications. She was whipping her team into shape even as a young camper - though that started to waver once Steve Harrington came on the scene. Every year became the same - a whirlwind summer romance that lasted from the moment their feet would touch camp soil, only to break each others' hearts on the last day, just to pick up where they left off a year later. However, as Nancy matured over the years, Steve certainly didn't, driving her out of his arms and into the far quieter ones of fellow camper-turned-counsellor, Jonathan Byers.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jonathan - Finch: It was Hopper's ability to find a talent in young Jonathan which brought him out of his shell, that ultimately brought his mother Joyce closer to the camp operator. It was no skin off Jonathan's back - it practically guaranteed him a spot on the counsellor team without having to interact too much with his fellow campers, at least. But he eventually learned the benefits to socialising when being an ear to listen to Nancy's troubles soon became a shoulder to cry on, which snowballed into a friendship that hinted at far more. Though the two live in completely different parts of the country, long distance seems to suit Jonathan just fine - in fact, better than being in each others' spaces for, say, weeks of their summer vacation.
Chrissy - Parakeet: Chrissy hated camp at first, but she'd never tell her parents. She'd made such a big deal about wanting to go, despite them telling her she wouldn't handle being away from them. That wasn't why she hated camp - that could be boiled down to two words. Steve. Harrington. Every year, without fail, he'd do the absolute most to try and make her life hell. She hated to admit to it, but this rivalry did build character for her. She wants to be as much of a role model to new campers as her counsellors always were to her, and at least she also managed to get her best friend from back home a job, too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Eddie - Kingfisher: One half of the self-proclaimed Team Newbie, Eddie needed something to pad his resume with now that he'd finally graduated high school alongside his best friend two years his junior, Chrissy Cunningham. Another hesitant hire from Hopper, except beyond the anarchist persona the man could tell that there was a softer side to the boy, crying out for a little bit of order, a little bit of responsibility to prove himself. If Hopper plays his cards right, Eddie has all the makings of an ideal counsellor.
Vickie - Parula: Vickie had lived in close enough proximity of Camp Hawk all her life, and while she begged and begged her parents to sign her up, they insisted on summers being for family vacations. She celebrated her 18th birthday by sending her application for counsellor eight times over - one for every year she wished she could have attended. Of course, she'd done her research. She knew the culture of Camp Hawk inside out. She knew that almost everyone there would know someone, except her. But perhaps that's the unique take she can bring to the camp. If she can show one kid who's struggling to make friends, that even the adults need to start from scratch sometimes, she'd be satisfied.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Steve - Robin: Steve was by far Hopper's proudest achievement. Turning Robert Harrington's spoiled little brat into someone who enjoyed being in a place of structure so much that he was begging Hopper to come back as a counsellor. Just one problem - Steve Harrington doesn't have a creative bone in his body. That's a slight lie, there's one way his creativity shines, but the last thing Hopper needs is Steve teaching more kids how best to prank Chrissy Cunningham, even when his on-and-off girlfriend Nancy was desperately asking him to grow up and settle down for her. Still, Hopper couldn't resist creating another brand new role just for Steve. He just hopes that having a responsibility for something that he cares about will be the final flame under Steve's ass that he needs.
Robin - Cardinal: Robin has spent her whole life being the black sheep of everywhere she goes, and now that she's supposed to "go out into the world" and "find herself", she has no clue where to even begin. She's more than happy to sit back, play second fiddle to whoever needs her to, and let someone else dictate her life for her for as long as possible. Anything that allows her to procrastinate from having to face the realities of all the burdens of reality: not knowing what direction she wants to live her life in, though the pressures of college sure want her to; coming to terms with having finally come out to herself, and having to face the ultimate dread of figuring out who would ever possibly be safe to come out to.

Songs Of My Life: Bill Bragin
Bill Bragin is a man with many experiences both in the USA and the UAE. As you read ahead, you will see moments of realisation and learning throughout his life.
THE JOKER - STEVE MILLER BAND
“The Joker was the first 45 I've ever bought. It was probably the first record I bought as a child. I was probably 6 or 7 years old when I bought it, I got my allowance money and my parents let me pick out one record. It's a sort of blues rock song and the lyrics have fairly simple rhymes. In the time leading up to this interview, I have relistened to my playlist a lot and one thing I realised is how many of these songs had adult themes that I couldn’t pick up on until I was way older. Steve Miller was someone who listened to a lot of old-school blues so some of the lyrics he used are blues imagery. For example, “I really love your peaches, wanna shake your tree”. So Steve Miller was my first vision of rock and, sort of, the first time I got to choose my own songs”
CRAZY HORSES - THE OSMONDS
“So, The Joker by Steve Miller Band has this slide guitar part that sort of reminds me of an excited little kid and I realised that a similar guitar part was in the song Crazy Horses by The Osmonds. So, The Osmonds were sort of like an early boy band. They were a Mormon family band from Utah, and were essentially the white version of the Jackson 5. They were sort of ripping off the Jackson 5, there is this one song of theirs that sounds extremely similar to ABC. A lot of their songs were very pop or were like power ballads, but this song was very different, it’s a sort of fake heavy metal song. And when I was in college, I had a radio show and I used to play it on almost every radio show. It's a song I used to love a lot as a little kid and my first concert experience was seeing the Osmonds live with my summer camp.”
DETROIT ROCK CITY - KISS
Hard rock was a large part of my upbringing. Kiss were making a kind of glam rock, but Kiss did it with a hard rock and metal edge. They all wore different make-up and had different characters. This reminded me of David Bowie, who was also a large part of my upbringing, and his many characters. Detroit Rock City was a song that came out in their 1976 album Destroyer and was played at the first big concert I attended on my own. This song really played with my head. It was about a man trying to get to a show and then dying in a car crash on the way there, but he is the one telling the story to you. The guitar solo is still something I can sing along to, to this day.
Mustapha - Queen
The second arena show that I went to was to see Queen at Madison Square Garden for my birthday. I had my family buy me tickets to the show and the complete Queen catalogue. This was after Bohemian Rhapsody had come out. When I ask myself, why am I here in Abu Dhabi and why I listen to music that is not in English it brings me back to this song. It was probably the first time I heard a reference to Allah on a record. Freddie Mercury grew up in Zanzibar to a Persian family, so he was really connected to this region.
Watching The Detectives - Elvis Costello
This song was part of my introduction to reggae. I first listened to Elvis Costello on his third album and one thing about that album was that it came with a bonus live EP. One of the songs on that EP was Watching The Detectives. The baseline of this song is reggae, and this was around the time when many of these musicians were reggae fans trying to incorporate it into their music as much as they could. Different from the lyrics of Detroit Rock City, these lyrics are more complex. They're very metaphorical so you’re not quite sure what the story is. Elvis Costello, along with David Bowie, has to be one of my favourite artists. I must have seen them in concert 30-40 times. At my Bar Mitzvah, I had a centrepiece at the kid's table that was an Elvis Costello Styrofoam sculpture. He is someone that I have since gotten to know, so he is also one of the musical idols that I know personally.
King of Rock - Run DMC
I might’ve had a few 12-inches and singles, but King of Rock was the first hip-hop album I ever bought. This album first broke me out of being so rock oriented. Even though this song is considered rap rock today, it used only to be viewed as hip-hop. In the early days of rap, they used to sample a lot of rock records. When you listen to King of Rock today, you realise that they blurred the lines between the distinction between what is rap and what is rock. This brings me back to the first song on this playlist “The Joker” by Steve Miller Band. Both of those songs have really simple rhymes, almost like nursery rhymes, and they both have lyrics that brag about how cool they are. So King of Rock is not too far off from the music I used to listen to before and it’s what made me the rap fan I am today.
Rios, Pontes e Overdrives - Chico Science & Nacao Zumbi
Chico Science and Nação Zumbi are from a small town in the northeast of Brazil called Recife. They were the leaders of a musical movement called Maguebeat. Manguebeat consisted of artists from the northeast of Brazil that took the local rhythms and combined them with metal, hip hop and other Western genres. In 1995, I brought them over to the US to perform at Central Park for SummerStage for their first show outside of Brazil. Me bringing them over to Central Park meant they gained some respect in Brazil for what they were doing. This was when I realised my career had reached the point where my choices could have that much impact. When they were in New York, we went over to this hip-hop club and they knew the words to every hip-hop classic that came on. This interaction helped me realise that while they had all the same influence I did, everything they were doing was hyper-local and could only be from the northeast of Brazil. The way they fused together the hyper-global and hyper-local changed the way I view music forever.
Ana Mashoof - The Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra
I was trying to find what the “Manguebeat” of the UAE is and who are the ones exploring the hyper-global and the hyper-local. I came across Noon and they were one of the first groups I came across that, to me, sounded like the UAE with three different musicians from different backgrounds. That mixture of hyper-global and hyper-local has been present in each person I bring over to The Arts Center (at NYU Abu Dhabi). They're all doing things with the same idea just within different contexts.
One of the first concerts of traditional Khaleeji music that I went to when I first came to Abu Dhabi was by a group of Bahri musicians from Kuwait, that were part of a conference at NYU Abu Dhabi, Mayouf Mejally. I got to know Ghazi Al-Mulaifi an ethnomusicologist who was studying for his PhD at the time. We went with an NYU Abu Dhabi class to visit him in Kuwait when he had his first concert with his own band, where he started to take the traditional rhythms from the diwaniya of Bahri music and mix it with jazz and that band became Boom Diwan and Ana Mashouf has, sort of, become their theme song, for me. Ghazi now lives in Abu Dhabi and teaches at the University and we’ve done a lot of different projects together like the Cuban Khaleeji Project, which this song is from.
