Many people experience this, and there's a simple reason why - the dumbbells are too far in front of your body. By making a small adjustment to your form, you can row with better technique and less pain.</p> <h3>Keep Your Hips Close to the Dumbbells</h3> <p>For a safer, more effective row, it's important to keep your hips as near to the dumbbells as possible. This helps keep your "center of mass" stable and reduce pressure on your lower back. You'll also use your back muscles more efficiently. Be sure the path of the dumbbells stays close to your body's center line throughout the movement.</p> <h3>Use a Resistance Band to Correct Your Form</h3> <p>To fix letting the dumbbells drift too far forward, an elastic resistance band can help. Tie one end to the dumbbells and attach the other end to a sturdy rack. Then roll the dumbbells slowly backwards until the band is taut. This positions the weights properly against the resistance. From here, perform your rows while fighting the band's pulls - it will encourage keeping perfect form.</p> <h3>Train Your Body's Reflexes for Better Movement</h3> <p>This technique is called Reactive Neuromuscular Training, also known as RNT. By exaggerating your form flaw against resistance, RNT helps "reprogram" your body. Your proprioception - ability to sense your body's position - improves. Through small corrections, your neuromuscular system learns the right movement pattern. Some call it "reverse psychology" training, but it works!</p> <p>With a resistance band to guide you, rowing with proper form is simple. Soon, your back will thank you! Keep your hips close, dumbbells in, and rows will cease to cause pain. Now get out there and strengthen that back muscularly <em>and</em> neurologically.</p>
