Around a Cooking Pot
The first thing that Link learned after coming out of the Shrine of Resurrection was how alive the world was. Rolling hills and winding rivers greeted him, beating to the beat of his own heart as he adjusted to the blinding light outside the cave.
The second thing he learned was how to roast an apple over an open fire.
Quickly after that, cooking became second nature. He could coax a smile out of a sad friend with a fragrant mix of fish and butter, conspire with his friends in Kakariko Village after offering a couple pieces of honey candy, or boost his strength before a fight with the help of a meaty skewer.
He often got weary travelers to open up and share their stories over the soothing refrain of a simmering hearty soup, quietly delighting in the satisfied sighs of his unsuspecting guests as they tried a warm meal for the first time in days.
He once even made a cake for a Princess, who refused to share a piece even as she sniffled and stubbornly wiped tears from her eyes at the familiar taste of sweet berries mixed in a luscious rich cream in between layers of fluffy white sponge.
It was no surprise then, that when he set off on a journey with eight heroes of courage, he became the group’s official cook at the sight of the simple stew he made on their first evening together, camping on the forest of the Hero of Time’s era. Link often wondered how his brothers had survived their own adventures going on little else than hardtack, milk, and the occassional friendly monster teaching them the recipe for an unexpectedly delicious soup (which was more likely than one would think).
Sure, most of them had some frequent access to towns, merchants, or their own homes, but adventuring meant spending days at a time on their own, fighting hordes of monsters, exploring the most untouched parts of the land and crawling through long forgotten dungeons, and yet his brothers had been rather helpless around a cooking pot except for the most basic of recipes.
Now, the act of cooking was almost as nourishing as the food he prepared. The rancher had told him once, with a grin and a bump of his shoulders, that it looked like he was in a trance. And sure enough, once he really got into it, he felt as if he merely had to toss ingredients into a pot and watch them bounce, becoming meals in an instant as he hummed a little made-up song and lost track of everything around him. Of course, in reality cooking takes a lot more patience and care, and he likes to take the time to make every detail just right.
It had been almost three years since he separated from his brothers and stopped using the name “Wild”. As he sat around the fire making his new favorite recipe - one he hoped he could one day share with the men who had become his brothers - Link once again lost track of his surroundings, this time to the soft hum of a now familiar tune he had learned from the youngest hero on the team.
He sat on a trunk in a nameless island in the North Akkala Sky Archipelago - whoever named the Sky Islands had clearly gotten bored after the masterpiece of Lightcast Island - preparing a pizza, a brand new recipe he created with Koyin after helping her recover the recipe for cheese. The rancher had introduced him to cheese before, and he sometimes missed the soft, pillowy Ordon Goat Cheese, but the more fragrant version they made in Hateno melted perfectly over the disk of soft bread and thick, herby tomato sauce.
He had already tested a few different toppings to place on top of the pizza, trying to find the perfect companion for the savory cheese. Strips of roasted vegetables where a sensible option and offered a fair variety, but Link didn’t get to where he was by playing it safe. Today, he was testing thin slices of cured meat, and although the result was quite satisfying, he found himself wishing he had saved more of the sweet-and-tangy fruit that grew in the warm islands of the sailor’s world. The pineapples would complement nicely with the rich, fatty tones of the meat.

Was not prepared for the emotionally visceral reaction listening to David Archuleta talk about his mom would give me. These days most stuff about the church just rolls off me because I'm legitimately over it and I don't care but MAN. Wombo combo mommy issues and religious trauma and you have a recipe for disaster I suppose 🫠
Wistful queer exmo rambling under the cut because I gotta get it out somewhere.
Like! His mom just leaves the church because she loves him more than anything the church tells her or could say and it's hard not to draw the conclusion that mine doesn't because if anything, she's doubled down in some ways on Mormonism since three of her kids have left and one of them turned out to be a gender fucky dyke.
And I don't want to sound bitter or ungrateful because I wasn't even expecting her to take my coming out as well as she did, and that was a miracle in and of itself to me and I am so thankful for it; but she is still so Mormon that she believes someday when we're all resurrected this "burden" of being queer will be "lifted" from me. Being queer has never been a burden for me. The church and how it treats people like me and rips apart families as a result of that is the burden. She doesn't quite understand that, even though my sister and I have tried explaining. I don't know if it's because she just doesn't get it yet or if she is choosing not to get it.
Hearing how someone else's Mormon mom just so immediately heard how her child didn't feel welcomed in her church and that was enough for her to say "I'm done" so she left and mine has heard how I feel over and over and over again and hasn't left hurts more than I anticipated.
And I wanna be clear I'm not angry or upset with David or his mom. I'm so happy for them that they have that relationship and that he has her in his corner. It just kinda makes me sad a little bit.

(belated) reading update: may 2023
upon realizing I was over a week late on my book report for May I considered just waiting until the end of June and rolling the two together, but thing is that I have a Theme for June (spoilers: it's the very predictable theme of only reading books by and/or about queer people) and lumping them together will really throw that off, so! onwards we go.
I should also say that this will be a real shorty, tied with March for the LEAST amount of books I've managed to finish in a month so far this year. in March that was because the month mostly revolved around a weeklong vacation to crash at my mom's place on the beach with a gaggle of friends, which was very fun but seriously cramped my time to read for pleasure. May ALSO saw a very exciting weeklong trip to a brand new city (WHAT'S UP NEW ORLEANS) as well as genuinely some of the shittiest and most harrowing events of my adult life so far so. can't blame a bitch a bitch for slipping!
ANYWAY.
what have I been reading?
People From Bloomington (Budi Darma, 1980; trans. Tiffany Tsao, 2022) - a strange short story collection set in the Bloomington, Indiana, where the Indonesian Darma studied during the 1970s. these stories take the mundane drama of Americana and turn it on its head, crawling deep into themes of alienation and ostracization and the ways they turn people against themselves. over and over again Darma tells tales of lonely boarders driven to obsessive and antisocial behavior by the loneliness that eats them alive amid pleasant-looking suburbs. the prose is overall a little on the dry end for me to really love it, but I do think about how fucked up these protagonists are, like, constantly.
High on the Hog: A Culinary Journey from Africa to America (Jessica B. Harris, 2011) - a delight! an absolute gosh dang delight! Harris is a PUN FULL INTENDED delectable writer who takes you on the most unexpected tour of how African foodways have shaped the culture of US cuisine. beginning with the obvious roots of the transatlantic slave trade and journeying on to America's first Black restaurateurs and sit-ins at diner counters, there's no facet of culinary life too small to be interwoven with Black American history, and Harris eagerly explores them all while painting a vivid picture for her readers. this book will absofuckinglutely make you hungry, so it's a good thing that recipes are included in the back.
Gay Bar: Why We Went Out (Jeremy Atherton Lin, 2021) - a heady powerhouse of a read, seamlessly blending the historical with the editorial with the personal. Lin's on a journey to resurrect the history of the gay bars that shaped he and his husband's intertwined lives - from their roots before his time, the state he found them in as a young man searching for a place in the queer scene, and their apparently dwindling status in the 2020s. Lin's writing is dreamy and grimy, unflinching and romantic, horny and bored all at once. this isn't an uncritical glorification of the gay bar but an interrogation, the pressing question of what community even means and where on earth it's going.
D'Vaughn and Kris Plan a Wedding (Chencia C. Higgins, 2022) - that's right, still on that kick of reading one romance novel a month. if you spend any amount of time perusing lists of LBGT book recs, particularly LBGT romances, it's inevitable that you'll run into D'Vaughn and Kris. this book has so much #representation that it's pretty much catnip for list compilers: both leads are Black lesbians, D'Vaughn is fat and not yet out to her very Christian mother, and Kris is a butch Afro-Latina (and also part of the most marginalized community of all: influencers). but what about the story, is that actually good? straight up no, not at all; I feel pretty comfortable saying this is maybe my least favorite of the romance novels I've read so far. totally aside from lackluster writing, clunky exposition, and slapdash plotting, this book is uninterested in engaging with its central premise - Kris and D'Vaughn meet on a reality show where they are paired up to plan a wedding in 6 weeks without letting their families figure out that their relationship is a sham - to such an absurd and infuriating degree that I have to wonder why Higgins even bothered.
that's all for now, June will hopefully be MUCH more full considering I've already finished three books and still have nearly three weeks to go + a whole heap of queer books checked out from the library! xoxo

"Aah, guess duty calls, my love," Arlo sighed. "And I was rather enjoying the view..."
Fannar smiled gently, brushing his hair.
"I'd rather wait. I don't like leaving you alone after what happened. And you're still not fully there, air-head."
"I'm fully recovered, I assure you. Just a little... floaty, I suppose. But I am fine."
"I remember you throwing up a whole ball of Rot this morning. That does not spell fine to me."
"Side-effects."
"Sure!" Fannar rolled his eyes, hardly convinced. "Floaty."
Tumblr media
"If it'll make you feel more at ease, I can watch over him in your absence, you grace," Syra suggested. "I am one of your priestesses, I know how to heal, albeit not at his level."
"You're more than a priestess! You're cunning and intelligent!" Arlo praised her. "You fooled the High Order into getting a god resurrected!"
"How many Vitae potions did he take?" Syra shifted her weight.
"Around ten..."
"He's high as a kite right now."
Fannar chuckled. "Floaty was the term I believe."
"I am still capable of coherent thought, mind you," Arlo huffed.
"Explains your great mood, Gloomy and Doom. I am going to suggest we get you some Goldylocks. Dragons use them in the treatment of Humors."
"They'd do wonders to my depression," Arlo scoffed. "Though I don't think getting my already broken mind dependent on Dragon Opium to be the solution."
Tumblr media
"Arlo..."
"Yes, my love?"
"Can I trust you to behave with Syra, while I go meet Dala?"
"Yes. I won't let her drag us into any trouble."
"Good. I know how the two of you together is recipe for disaster."
"This disaster got your ass resurrected!" Syra complained.

🖊🖊🖊 for anyone! :3
Thank you 🥰 Let's get to know them a little more! ^^
🖊️ - If Anwen’s not necessarily a sweet-tooth, she does love food, and has often sneaked into her parents’ kitchens to watch the staff prepare the meals. She’s by no means a chef, but she enjoys cooking and trying new recipes wherever she travels.
Tumblr media
She found Trahearne is particularly fond of New-Kaineng noodles and she took a liking to the extra spicy ones!
🖊️ - Galaëd will keep a very strong connection to Trahearne after his resurrection. After all, the mesmer’s still the chosen bearer of Caladbolg, even if a shard of the Thorn took like in the form of the fern hound that now accompanies Trahearne.
As such, he has felt an echo rippling through their bond, like light reflecting on the surface of water, a golden shine and a burst of anger striking and immediately finding peace, a feeling of belonging and a name rolling like thunder in the distance. Vlast. The Firstborn of Glint had found his Champion.
Tumblr media
🖊️ - Trahearne's death caused a massive explosion of ley energy that devastated the clearing and shattered the spiral guarding the Heart of Thorns.
Tumblr media
Anwen held him when he died and if Caladbolg protected her new bearer and absorbed most of the damage, she still arbours severe burn scars on her hands and arms. She conceals them under long gloves whatever the season or the occasion.

Fun Bunnies
Although Resurrection Day has nothing to do with rabbits, they seem to hop in anyway. I made these for my great-grandchildren to enjoy when we gather after church next Sunday. I’ll include the recipe in case you want to try your hand at it. I use my basic roll dough to make these bunnies. The recipe is included in my cookbook Family Favorites from the Heartland found at Amazon.com . Basic Roll…

For the second consecutive year, a rare convergence of three major religious observances will occur next month with the overlapping of Ramadan, Passover and Easter. Given that Ramadan begins 10-12 days earlier each year, this unusual intersection happens only every thirty years or so and, this spring, it will transpire at the beginning of April. While each of these holy holidays is based on different faiths and beliefs, they are all commemorated by certain food rituals and practices. Amongst the differences in these traditions, there also lie some common themes and similarities in the large, festive communal meals as well as restrictions on eating patterns and consumption of certain foods. Read on to learn more!   Ramadan: Evening of Wed, Mar 22 - Evening of Thu, Apr 20 (North America) Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar and begins at the first sighting of the crescent Moon. During this holiest of months, Muslims observe a complete fast during daylight hours with no food or drink – even water – permitted from dawn until sunset. Ramadan culminates in the celebration of Eid al-Fitr or Festival of Sweets.   Many who observe Ramadan wake before sunrise to eat suhoor, a heavy and nourishing breakfast that provides enough energy to fuel them throughout the day. Recipes usually feature a balanced mix of complex carbohydrates, protein, healthy fats, and ingredients that contain water for hydration. Thanks to their high nutritional density and protein content that promotes satiety, eggs are featured in many traditional suhoor dishes. Make it a one-stop shop at your local Down to Earth farmers market this weekend by picking up a dozen pastured, free-range eggs plus the bulk of the ingredients you need to make these delicious suhoor recipes:   Tahini-Maple Sweet Potato Pancakes Serves one, multiply as needed:   - 2 eggs - 1 baked and cooled medium-sized sweet potato - 2 tablespoons maple syrup - 1 tablespoon tahini - 1 small, chopped apple   Spinach & Feta Omelet - 3 large eggs - 1 clove garlic - 1 cup sliced white mushrooms - 3 cups fresh spinach - 1/3 cup crumbled feta cheese - 2 tbsp ghee - Salt and pepper to taste   Passover: Wed, Apr 5 - Thu, Apr 13 Passover, also called Pesach, is a major Jewish holiday that celebrates the Biblical story of the Israelites’  departure from ancient Egypt. On the first two nights of the seven or eight-day holiday a seder is held where families tell the story of Passover over a tray of symbolic foods representing each part of the story, and then enjoy a meal together. While fasting is not required during Passover, foods that are leavened or made with a leavening agent must not be consumed.   The farmers market can help fill your seder plate with apples for charoset, parsley, and a variety of “bitter herb” options and offers alternatives for the dinner plate too. Because it is a kosher cut of meat that can feed many, brisket is commonly served during Passover Seder. This brisket recipe is not only super easy to follow and make, its ingredients can also be easily sourced in the farmers market:   Easy Onion-Braised Brisket - 5 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil - First-cut beef brisket (about 5 pounds), trimmed of excess fat, wiped with a damp paper towel, and patted dry - 6 large garlic cloves, peeled and crushed - 2 pounds onions, thinly sliced (about 8 cups) - 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar - Salt and freshly ground black pepper   Easter: Sunday, April 9 Easter, also called Pascha or Resurrection Sunday, is a Christian festival and cultural holiday commemorating the resurrection of Jesus. Easter feasting also has a link to fasting, since it comes at the end of Lent, a 40-day period often observed with acts of abstinence.   Easter Sunday is traditionally celebrated over a large meal featuring meat, potatoes, vegetable side dishes and dinner rolls. In preparation for Easter, Down to Earth meat vendors will bring holiday ham, pastured chicken and spring lamb this weekend; the farmstands will have plenty of root veggies and indoor-grown greens; and our chocolate and baked goods vendors will make specialty items such as Easter eggs and decorated cookies. Whatever you decide to serve as the meal’s centerpiece, you can enhance your Easter feast with this delicious recipe for honey roasted carrots made with farmers market ingredients: Honey Brown Sugar Roasted Carrots - 2 pounds young carrots - tops trimmed at about 2 inches - 2 tablespoons olive oil - 4 tablespoons butter - 2 tablespoons brown sugar - 2 tablespoons honey - 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar - 1 tablespoon minced garlic - 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning - Salt and pepper to taste
