Watership Down is an adventure novel by English author Richard Adams, published by Rex Collings Ltd of London in 1972. Set in Hampshire in southern England, the story features a small group of rabbits. Although they live in their natural wild environment, with burrows, they are anthropomorphised, possessing their own culture, language, proverbs, poetry, and mythology. Evoking epic themes, the novel follows the rabbits as they escape the destruction of their warren and seek a place to establish a new home (the hill of Watership Down), encountering perils and temptations along the way. Watership Down was Richard Adams' debut novel. It was rejected by several publishers before Collings accepted the manuscript; the published book then won the annual Carnegie Medal (UK), annual Guardian Prize (UK), and other book awards. The novel was adapted into an animated feature film in 1978 and, from 1999 to 2001, an animated children's television series. In 2018, a drama of the story was made, which both aired in the UK and was made available on Netflix. Adams completed a sequel almost 25 years later, in 1996, Tales from Watership Down, constructed as a collection of 19 short stories about El-ahrairah and the rabbits of the Watership Down warren. Watership Down is a 1978 British animated adventure-drama film, written, produced and directed by Martin Rosen and based on the 1972 novel by Richard Adams. It was financed by a consortium of British financial institutions and was distributed by Cinema International Corporation in the United Kingdom. Released on 19 October 1978, the film was an immediate success and it became the sixth-most popular film of 1979 at the UK box office. It features the voices of John Hurt, Richard Briers, Harry Andrews, Simon Cadell, Nigel Hawthorne and Roy Kinnear, among others, and was the last film work of Zero Mostel, as the voice of Kehaar the gull. The musical score was by Angela Morley and Malcolm Williamson. Art Garfunkel's hit song "Bright Eyes" was written by songwriter Mike Batt. It has garnered a cult following. ‘The Company of the Ring shall be More Than Four; and the More Than Four Runners shall be set against the More Than Four Riders that are evil,' said El-ahrairond. 'With you and your faithful servant, Bundalf will go; for this shall be his great task, and maybe the end of his labours.
‘For the rest, they shall represent the other Free Peoples of the World: Hares, Moles, and Squirrels. Lagolas shall be for the Hares and Groundli son of Gleysol for the Moles. They are willing to go at least to the passes of the Mountains, and maybe beyond. For squirrels you shall have Acorn son of Acothorn, for the Ring of Incisdur concerns him closely.'
--- John Richardadams Rolkien Tolkien, The Watership of the Ring

Watership Down (1978)

If Watership Down had been made with a bigger budget, the visuals could've been a bit better. That's my only criticism. The drawings are fine, it's just that they don't quite match the level of the writing but I don't think I'd change them even if I could. This is a striking, emotional film that sticks with you.
When Fiver (voiced by Richard Briers) has a premonition about an incoming disaster, he convinces Hazel (voiced by John Hurt) and several other rabbits to leave their home and search for greener pastures. Their journey is filled with danger.
Unlike your typical animated film, Watership Down doesn’t sugarcoat anything. This is a story about rabbits. Not furry people with rabbit heads that drive cars and eat carrot sandwiches, just rabbits. They scurry around, dig holes, and are always on the run from predators. It means that characters are going to die - eaten by bigger animals. A floppy-eared dog becomes a monster. An open field of flowers is a place where death comes from above. I’ve heard some call this picture a childhood trauma waiting to happen. I disagree. As long as they’re old enough to understand what death is and recognize that what's happening on-screen isn’t real, this adaptation of Richard Adams' novel would be a great film for younger audiences and their parents. The fact of the matter is that death is real. No matter how many blinders you may place, eventually, your kids will see a rabbit dead on the side of the road or realize that mice run away from cats in cartoons because cats are predators. As rabbits, our protagonists are perfectly aware of their place in the world. Sure they’re upset when characters die and are fearful when they sense danger, but they understand that’s what life is.
This is a fascinating story because it puts you in shoes you’ve never stepped in before. If rabbits could talk, piece thoughts together, and formulate societies based on more than just instincts, what would it be like? What would it REALLY be like? What kind of rabbits would be in charge? From what headspace would rabbit poets come, what legends would they tell, how would they rationalize the world?
Writer/director Martin Rosen never trivializes the story's situations and never takes a cheap route by creating artificial, fanciful developments. This makes everything that much more intense when the action kicks in and deeply satisfying when these tiny creatures manage to triumph over the immense adversities they face. You can never be sure of where it’s headed next, but you’re eager to see. Its ending, is so truthful and melancholic it's perfect. It shakes you to your core.
Watership Down is an uncompromising film about rabbits and the lives they lead. You can tell that it’s been well researched and thoughtfully assembled. I don’t even mind the art style. It kind of reminds me of the kind of drawings that would be done in a high-school art class. Not innocent, but not grim either. It’s just a fact of life. Like Walt Disney’s Bambi, some will say that it’s too much, that children should be coddled and sheltered from the real world. I think its intelligence and honesty will reward and educate its viewers young and old rather than damage them. (Theatrical version on Blu-ray, January 27, 2017)

Here’s another of the #booksthatmademe as a reader and author: Richard Adams’ transcendent, unforgettable WATERSHIP DOWN. . Yes, I know the cartoon is terrifying, but I didn’t see that version until I was well into my twenties (and let’s be fair here, it was never actually aimed at children), whereas I discovered the book at the age of twelve or so and it blew my mind in the best way. Seriously, who would have thought a book where all the main characters are rabbits, and not even rabbits dressed up in clothes and acting like people but actual silflay-eating hraka-passing bunnies loping about the countryside all fours, could be so gripping? . The sense of place in the book is phenomenal, the rabbit mythology is marvellously conceived and told, the characters are distinct and memorable (despite all looking basically the same at a glance because WILD RABBITS, for Pete’s sake), and the worldbuilding has all the richness of high fantasy despite it being set in a very recognizable modern-day England. . And now that I’ve said all this, anyone who’s read my faery books may begin to guess what a huge influence WATERSHIP DOWN had on my imagination. Are the faeries in KNIFE all named after plants like the rabbits in WD? Absolutely (and the name of my faery librarian in particular is a direct allusion to WD, as well as a nod to Margery Allingham’s charming 1930’s detective by the same name). . KNIFE too is set in a quiet corner of the English countryside, and features a community of small, vulnerable creatures with their own distinct history and culture who find modern human ways and technology baffling. There are far more differences than similarities between KNIFE and WATERSHIP DOWN on the whole, but I feel it’s only right to credit Richard Adams for inspiring and teaching me how to tell a story from a non-human point of view. . Q: Have you enjoyed any books where the main characters are animals? Which ones are your favorites? . . . . . #bookstagram #bookish #BookRecommendations #books #watershipdown #richardadams #cozyreading #bookish #bookishfeature #igreads #booklover #lovebooks #readmorebooks #bookpage #bookcollection #writinginspirations #readallthings https://www.instagram.com/p/B-BHMG9AD-i/?igshid=re825qi303ht

“Oh, Hazel, look! The field! It’s covered with blood!”
“Don’t be silly, it’s only the light of the sunset.”
Just a quick experiment before bed. I was inspired by the fanart Fiver’s Vision of Death by LadyFiszi on DeviantArt (last pic).

I’m planning to release this into the wild #littlefreelibrary ecosystem this evening; enjoyable collection of stories for a “Watership Down” fan, especially if you think the only flaw in the original was that there weren’t enough stories about El-ahrairah, the Prince with a Thousand Enemies #richardadams #watershipdown #book (at Longfellow) https://www.instagram.com/p/CSm9fbCFtgM/?utm_medium=tumblr
