Reposted from @whitecube / @richardhuntsculptor In 1971, Richard Hunt achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first African American sculptor to have a landmark retrospective at MoMA, New York with a presentation of works from 1955–71.

This show at White Cube New York mirrors that time span, including the restaging of several works that were presented in his MoMA retrospective.

Several rarely exhibited works from the artist’s personal collection, including ‘Hero’s Head’ (1956), a pivotal sculpture made in response to the murder of Emmett Till, feature in the show.

When Richard Hunt was 19 years old, he witnessed the open-casket funeral of Emmett Till in Chicago. Till, who was abducted, tortured, and lynched in Mississippi in 1955, had grown up only two blocks from the Woodlawn home where Hunt was born. Till's mother, Mamie, decided to have an open casket for Emmett, and images of his mutilation circulated the world to show the torture and violence conducted on her son. Hunt would later remark, "What happened to [Till] could have happened to me." Hunt went on to create art shaped by this experience, which influenced both his artistic expression and his commitment to the cause of Civil Rights.

"[The sculpture] Hero's Head, 1956, is what I would call my response to Emmett Till," says Richard Hunt. "I was there with my mother and father, my sister, and my cousin who was part of the family . . . [Emmett Till's] remains are there at the church. Till's mother had an open casket. It was obviously something to respond to."

Richard Hunt, A Bridge Across and Beyond. “In honor of my mother Katie May Artis Debrew and in honor of all mothers who raise their children alone,” John Debrew, Jr. NB: This sculpture was surveyed in 1993 for its condition and was described "well maintained". However, since 2005, the fountain has only been filled sporadically, due to cracks in the fountain. In lieu of repairing the fountain, Howard has considered removing the fountain, leaving the sculpture "suspended over a solid plaza." In 2007, Howard's Blackburn Center director, Roberta McLeod, passed out fliers and considered raising money to fix the fountain, desiring to leave it a working fountain unlike other fountains on campus, which were no longer running. Inktober Day 31 - JUG-BAND! . Closing out the month with the FROGTOWN HOLLOW JUBILEE JUG BAND: Emmet Otter, Harvey Beaver, Wendell Porcupine, and Charlie Muskrat. Wanted to try some of these guys back in 2019, but they had to wait until now; I hope this is a suitable send-off! . Emmet Otter's Jug-Band Christmas is on another level. It really set the bar for the Henson Co's practical effects on TV; from Kermit on the bicycle, to Emmet and Ma rowing down the river, to the ice skating, to the River Bottom Nightmare Band tearing through the streets in their jalopy, to the fish muppet swimming in the aquarium and spitting water, to the walking marionette Muppets... it's a showcase of ingenuity in practical effects. And seeing modern TV specials like the Muppets Haunted Mansion just highlights how much of the magic has been lost with the prevalence of digital effects. . #Repost @nephellim ・・・ “Oh, I’ll never get this...never!” 🎹 For those who grew up during the ‘Golden Age’ of Sesame Street, here’s a muppet who indubitably (try saying that 3 times fast) would have left a mark, Don Music! 🎹 According to ‘Sesame Street Unpaved’, published in 1998, "The character, played by Richard Hunt, was abandoned because of complaints about his alarming tendencies toward self-inflicted punishment. Apparently, kids were imitating his head-banging at home." 🎹 Aside from Don Music, Richard Hunt performed many other characters on Sesame Street, including #ForgetfulJones, #PlacidoFlamingo, #Gladys the Cow, #Sully, and an early version of Elmo. Sadly, Hunt passed away from AIDS related complications in 1992. Blu Christmas Holiday Movie Asplosion 2022! ⛄ Chapter 23: Trading Places 🦌 I would like this film consideredly more if it weren't for the few problematically homophobic/racist moments. I don't mean characters who are racist acting racist, I mean the completely unnecessary Dan Akroyd "disguising" himself as an extremely poorly done rastafarian stereotype, including attempted black makeup. Regardless of whether it wasn't full on exaggerated blackface in style or if Eddie Murphy was okay with it or whatever, it's just a cringy awful and racist choice, for 1983 or any year. Also, the couple uses of the infamous homophobic slur feel extremely uncomfortable, and devoid of humor.
