Charles Richter was born on April 26, 1900. An American seismologist and physicist. Richter is most famous as the creator of the Richter magnitude scale, which, until the development of the moment magnitude scale in 1979, quantified the size of earthquakes. Inspired by Kiyoo Wadati's 1928 paper on shallow and deep earthquakes, Richter first used the scale in 1935 after developing it in collaboration with Beno Gutenberg.

Curiosidades sobre a Escala Richter-Gutenberg:
* É uma escala logarítmica de base 10;
*É uma função do primeiro grau, cresce em múltiplo de 10, e a magnitude está em função da energia de propagação dos Ábalos sísmicos;
*Sua unidade de medida é o Joule;
*Foi criada no período da Segunda Guerra Mundial, pela dupla de físicos Beno Gutenberg e Charles Francis Richter.

so bc i am a Gross Dude my friends i and sometimes rate our burps and my coworker (who is a teen girl) burped in front of me once and i instinctively rated it
so now every time she burps she looks to me hopefully for a rating and bc she has delicate little baby burps i now have to create an entirely new Burp Rating System unique to her bc i rate anything below a 5 and she looks at me like this

A Measure Of Things – Part Fourteen
The #Richter scale and how #earthquakes are measured #Science #geology
When an earthquake strikes, it is assigned a rating on the Richter scale. The recent Sea of Japan earthquake was assigned a rating of 7.6, but what does this mean and how much more powerful is an earthquake with a rating beginning with a 7 than one with a six? The Richter scale was devised by Charles Richter and Otto Gutenberg in 1935, after the duo collaborated to produce a standardised scale…

Aaaaa I keep forgetting what I have and have not posted yet, so here’s something I definitely haven’t shared. I made a couple sprites of other Belmonts as NES sprites :3. Kinda an art style study I guess, it was fun! I think some of them could use some tweaking tho tbh, especially since I’m not sure if they actually line up with the NES 256 color palette, I just guessed. But yeah :3. Some dudes!

My biggest geology pet peeve isn't when people say "dirt" instead of "soil", though I have known many geologists and soil scientists who get very upset about it.
No, it's when people say an earthquake was a magnitude of so and so on the Richter Scale. Richter Magnitude is actually outdated and has limitations, particularly for large earthquakes (which I won't get into). The standard used by the vast majority of seismologists is now the Moment Magnitude. There may be some stray incidences of Richter being used, particularly for a small earthquake, but nowadays the value reported is almost always Moment Magnitude.
And yet!
The news and everyone and their mother continues to call it the Richter Scale! It's not! Especially if it's a big earthquake (which ones on the news typically are), it's the Moment Magnitude!
...And that's my biggest geology pet peeve.

18 might take out the moon too, and I'm not talking flying chunks of the former planet earth it'd get hit by some vibrations even with the lack of air.
