it’s @mego42‘s bday. 

guess what else, guess what else!

to celebrate, i’m putting the rest (so far) of my ~beth x rio / rio x annie bffs~ drabble/WIP/draft/mess under the cut! it’s still a LONG way from being finished and it’s technically the second part of a two-part one shot (two shot?) i’m writing. knowing myself, i’ll end up rewriting everything below until it’s unrecognizable. not to mention, i have yet to even write the first part hahahaha

ok so this entire thing under the cut was built around a line of dialogue from ‘set it up’—it just so happened to reveal itself in the form of a rio/annie friendship.

Beth and the friend-of-a-friend she forgot the name of about four drinks ago are playing beer pong against Annie and Rio on the edge of the patio, while the other guests mingle around the spread of snacks on the deck and another group plays bags on the other side of the yard. Despite the focused effort and the white wine running warm through her veins, Beth’s losing. And hard. Which means Annie has gone from comfortable to confident to cocky (a direct result of Rio egging her on, no doubt) in record time.  With the buzz of the crowd competing against the cicadas as the evening has worn on, Beth realizes she can’t hear her opponent’s conversation anymore—can’t hear their ‘pong coaching’ as her sister called it. Drunk Annie is familiar territory, but seeing Rio like this?  It’s new, it’s exciting. He’s like a kid in a candy shop—youthful, innocent, determined. He’s practically glowing.  This time, Annie nods and focuses, then closes both eyes and tosses the ping pong ball, creating a perfect arch that falls way too short of the intended cup. Rio laughs into his cup of beer, then steps up for his own turn.  It could be worse, Beth thinks just as he lands a ball in the last cup and Annie reacts by jumping on him and clinging to his lanky frame like he’s a tree and she’s a koala. Except—Rio wasn’t expecting Annie’s enthusiasm (ha, amateur), so the two of them end up landing in a pile on the ground, their arms locked around each other still. "Oh my god, stop! Stop hugging each other. You are not friends,” she says, biting back a snort. “Oh c’mon, Beth. We’ll let you win the next one.” “Yeah, c’mon, Elizabeth.”  “Yeah, Elizabeth,” Annie mimics. “You loooove us.” “That is…not the point,” Beth argues, though even she isn’t convinced. Annie makes untangling herself look surprisingly effortless, then continues, “Don’t you want two people you looooove to also love each other?” She pushes herself up and off the ground, but Rio is slower. Beth feels briefly vindicated, until Annie reaches her arms out and down to him, motioning with grabby hands for him to latch on so she can help him up. “OH, OH! What’s that creepy kids show? With the song about loving each other?”  When he finally stands, he casually wraps an arm around Annie’s shoulder and she leans into it. They both smile at the restrained horror that’s translating to something along the lines of a pained smirk on Beth’s face. The more they hang out as a trio around other people, the more Annie realizes this could be a good thing for all of them—or, at least a fun thing.   The thrill of testing Beth’s patience is unmatched and she’s finally found someone to navigate and expand those limits with. Better yet, this is someone who basically turns her older sister into putty. Someone who lights her up like a switchboard—and there are few things Annie enjoys more than pushing all the right buttons.  “Mister Rogers?”  “What? No, gangfriend. The one with the—with the big purple—” Annie’s head springs off of Rio’s shoulder. “Shit, wait. What is he? A dinosaur?” “Right, right…Barney,” he offers. “Dang, man. You’re so smart.” Annie’s eyes are practically glistening as she bends her neck back so far, Beth worries it won’t come back up. That they’re stuck like this, together, forever. Rio laughs, turns back to Beth, and tilts his head more than he probably realizes. He watches how her face scrunches up in that horrified-but-don’t-know-where-to-start way he’s grown extremely used to. He doesn’t hate it. She clocks his reaction in return, hesitates, and retreats.  Best not to feed the beast. Especially when that beast is Annie and Rio with their arms linked around each other.  “Annie, stop. This is entirely about the two most chaotic people I know who are destined to only do the most chaotic things together. I guarantee I’m not the only one worried about what shitshow disasters could come of this…” she flicks her hand back and forth between them before dropping the f word. “...friendship.”

i think: okay so like if canon had forked off into a different direction, MAYBE? this would be fling-only. and hilarious. annie is too much of a mess for rio to handle (i think he would physically cringe at the usual state of her apartment) and rio is too uptight for annie (she would never be able to get comfortable/relax/wear sweatpants for 3 days in a row around him). also i think he would feel really bad about eventually wanting to bang her older sister, so it just wouldn't work out.

i think: their bond was originally forged so sisterly, with ruby taking care of beth taking care of annie, that i don't think i could see this as a romantic ship at all. they've swapped intimate details of their private and romantic lives, sure. i have always sort of thought beth would go to ruby for advice on how to ~spice things up in her marriage, and ruby might be clued in to how "good" things are depending on how much or how little beth wants to talk about it. BUT maybe they made a "if we're both not married by 30, we'll get married to each other" pact. platonic life partners/soulmates ftw!

Oooo. Thanks for asking, Anon! 💖 I feel like GG doesn’t really have fierce unpopular ships (usually I feel like unpopular also means widely disliked), but I’ll try to put some down. Do I even have over five ships on this show? I’m very tunnelvisioned onto Beth x Rio. It’s obviously my main ship, and it’s most people’s main ship. And I don’t really like to see them with anyone else, but let’s just kick it off with: Beth x Turner I mean, I think Ain’t No Sunshine says it all. While I don’t see them go beyond a stage of having an unhealthy affair, along with a twisted friendship maybe, I love their dynamic. And I fully blame Christina and James Lesure for that crackling antagonist energy they bring on screen. If it’s AU I could see something more happen, but I wouldn’t want it to last. I mean, inevitably someone is going to get murdered in this situation, and I doubt it’s going to be Beth. Annie x Amber Look I have no other reason to like this other than complete self-indulgent reasons, because I think it could be hilarious. Amber isn’t afraid to go after what she wants (even if that thing is Dean but you know, we all make mistakes), to try and also don’t be embarrassed by it not working out (like her acting career), returning to her hometown and build a new career. She’s mature and confident in ways Annie is not, while there’s I’m sure other ways Annie is better than her in certain aspect of her life. I could see it start out as a drunk night out with lots of BFF vibes before getting into a whole friends to lovers situation. I mean, I’d love it when Ben moves out in a few years, Annie decides to rent out that room and who’s there? Amber! They could be such a good ‘Don’t trust the B in Apartment 23’ situation ugh I want it! (Please someone write it) Marcus x Emma (Mid-teens) I mean, I don’t really know if it’s unpopular, I just haven’t seen any of it. But maybe I was just toying around with possible scenarios to (also, eventually) do as a follow up for Technicolors. Like, I can imagine Jane and Marcus being lifelong BFFs (If their parents don’t kill each other, obviously). But if Jane’s BFF and her sister started being boyfriend and girlfriend that would just warp her back to fantasyland because a) can you imagine something more gross? And b) even more gross if Beth and Rio were together. That’s like dating your ACTUAL sister! I’m making this too much about Jane. But I think Marcus and Emma could be really cute together, I think it be really fun if they’re like a reverse Beth x Rio. I know you asked for my top 5 unpopular ships, but I went through the cast-list five times and I can’t for the life of me think of any more. I do like Annie x Nancy as well, but I don’t think that’s really unpopular. And there’s some I feel like would be hilarious to read fic about like Rio/Dean or Mick/Mary Pat, but that’s more coincidental.

oooooh, i think it’s her helping nancy give birth in 2x08. i just love that she stays even though she doesn’t want to, i love that she lets nancy badmouth her because she knows that’s what nancy needs, i love how they’re both so vulnerable in that moment. annie x nancy is the otp of dreams, i wish we got more scenes with them.

59. do you think we will find out what rio had planned for boomer?

i mean, probably?? the writers left it open enough that they could never visit it again and just let the audience think he actually killed boomer. but i think all of us reached the conclusion that unfortunately boomer is probably still alive and kicking, and i think they love using that character so much that we will probably see him again in s4. i honestly would love to know why the fuck rio didn’t kill him, because i don’t see how he’s in any way helpful??

64. what do you think will happen with annie’s storyline? do you think she will continue to pursue her ged? do you think we will see more of nancy and gregg? what do you think will happen with her and ben’s relationship?

i have no idea. personally, i would love to see her get her ged. i think it would really give help with her self-esteem, because she’d finally stop being just beth’s screw-up younger sister (this isn’t how i think of her, i just think that that is an image that has followed her ever since she got pregnant and dropped out, and that getting her ged would help her feel much more confident), and it would probably allow her to get better job opportunities and it would make ben proud of her, which is something that’s really important to her. i’d also love to see nancy and gregg. they featured kind of heavily in s1 and s2 and when in s3 all they got was 1 and 2 scenes, respectively, i got some whiplash. i get why they weren’t as present, because annie’s storyline this season didn’t really involve them, but i would love getting more of them in s4, especially nancy, because i want her and annie to be bffs so bad (since this show will never have the balls to give annie the girlfriend she deserves). now, realistically, do i think i’ll get this? uhm, probably not?? i think we’ll continue seeing ben make offhand hurtful comments about annie’s lovelife because therapy really didn’t do anything for her in that aspect and i think nancy and gregg will continue being more or less mia unless there’s a conflict revolving around ben or the cheating again. hopefully, we will see annie get her ged or taking care of the books at boland bubbles like some people have speculated, because i think her getting a better job that allows her to better take care of ben and be more independent would be a much needed confidence boost for her.
