Next up for Nickelodeon era of shows, who is your favorite character from each of the early 2010s Nicktoons shows (where quality got continues to be hit and miss in this batch) you've seen like: Winx Club (Nickelodeon seasons), Kung Fu Panda Legends of Awesomeness, The Legend of Korra, Robot and Monster, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2012, Sanjay & Craig, Monsters vs Aliens 2013, and Breadwinners?
Winx Club: only one here I haven't seen but one I intend to for a project i'm working on combinng a lot of 2000's shows (and some 2010's shows) into one cohesive universe. A friend of mine really likes it.. or at least the pre nick seasons. From what I hear these seasons aren't the best but I really can't say either way.. though I can at least objectively say the concept of the first villian, a merman whose literally powered by toxic waste, is dumb. The idea of the guy himself, an arrogant prince who tried to kill his brother and is a fish man, isn't but why this. I'd worry about stepping on fans toes but the conseus from tv tropes seems to be "this guy bad".
Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomness: Don't really have a faviorite character here, but I thought it was okay. nothing amazing, it at least gave the five more spotlight than the films after 2, but it suffers from what i'm just calling now interquel syndrome: where your making a product specifically to slide in between bits of canon that aren't finished yet, so you can't really have the characters or evolve or change that radically. I have more hope for Tales of the TMNT despite possibly suffering from this simply because the creative team of the films seems involved so there's more synergy while with Kung Fu Panda they basically couldn't really have po or anyone change, which is fine for a status quo comedy show ala the simpsons, but dosen't work for an action show with a first film that's entirely about character development and progress. It's hard to have a show about kung fu mastery where the main character can't progress too much because it might contradict the next movie.
The Legend of Korra: Ladies and gents (And nb's) this is the moment i've been waiting for. Character choice.. Bolin. Not even close. Plenty of great characters here from Asami, who didn't get enough to do, to Varrick, stan pines long lost son, but my baby boy is just the best and is one of the few characters to get a consitently good arc in most of the seasons. While his season 1 had him stuck in the love triangle and his season 2 started with a HA HA ISN'T IT FUNNY BECAUSE IT'S A WOMAN ABUSING A MAN. THAT DON'T HAPPEN bit that made me die a bit inside, his move into the movers was a neat arc. even his stupid bit of sexual harassment was at least a character flaw and not LOOK I MADE A FUNNY BY HAVING THIS GIRL ABUSE A BOY. His arcs ins eason 3, finally finding a functional relationship and a special thing and 4, eventually finding out yes indeed we are the baddies, were great. The show itself is great and I feel gets entirely too much hate. Is it perfect?
Tumblr media
Season 1 is a bit messy, trying to cram several seasons of romance drama into 10 episodes and having some bits that don't quite work like Korra's makes it easy getting the rest of her bending back and the half assed tournament arc (Pro bending does slap though) and some bits I get why they don't work for people like the return of blood bending. But I still think it has tons of great character, plotting and the series second best villian in amon.
I'm not one to take the side door so i'll just come up front and knock: season 2 is a shit show. The origins episode is pretty good. Varrick is amazing. But Korra is extra impulsive, Mako is a piece of shit who couldn't make a decision if he had a gun to his head, and Asami is just there despite having a decent arc and personality in season 1. Add in the worst villian franchise wise and the whole ISN'T IT WACKY A MAN BEING ABUSED plot and yeah, season 2 blows
But while as should be clear i'm not in the "the show gets good by season 3" camp, seaosn 1 is still solid just rushed, season 3 is easily the series best with the return of the air benders being a truly wonderful curveball, Bolin finally getting thrown a bone by the universe, finding out more about Toph's family and more screentime for Bumi, whose awesome. It also has some of the franchises best villians with the series getting it's own magneto, a clever soft spoken man who simply wants to make a better world... but will choke whoever he has to to get it.
Season 4 isn't nearly as strong, Kuivera just had an impossible act to follow, but still works as Korra has one hell of a character arc, finding herself after several years of avoiding her problems, having to reconcile with the love of her life and bolin having to reconclie with generally hurting everyone around him. Even Mako, while still cardboard gets a decent arc with the prince. Kuivera isn't amazing, but she does bring out the best in everyone to make a solid finale. She also has a giant fighting robot so there. We also get Toph back whose essentially become yoda and it fits her like a glove. Her terse answers to Korra's enthuastic questions are great as is every moment of her. She's the only one of the gaang to really get to play a full on involved roll (Katara gets an apperance once a book and Zuko shows up once ) and it's glorious. Overall the series is great. I didn't go into this much detail for nothing. That and having to prepare for this since avatar a few entries ago had me primed and ready. I feel the show has a great cast of characters that more than makes up for it's shortcomings and is worth a watch if you loved the original.
Robot and Monster: Robot if only because he's voiced by Curtis Armstrong of Dan Vs fame. I like the designs here, but what I saw of the show is mostly pretty standard nick premise, something that was going around in those days as I ranted about last time. it's not nearly as bad as some of the others, but it dosen't really have anything extra either. it's resoundingly meh.
TMNT 2012: Leo. It was Donnie when I started watching but then he got all stalkery but this leo is intresting: they keep him being the responsible one and leader man, but helped flesh him out. While I love some versions that are the stock bit responsible load bearing brother (03 and IDW), this one has a goofy charm: he watches old sci fi cartoons, takes the job a tad seriously and isn't afraid to joke. Out of the four boys in this series he's the one who feels the most diffrent in a good way and I like that he has to learn to be leader and slowly grow into the roll, but was also the right one for it with splitners little test.
Another one that like Korra I watched and felt like a sign Nick was turning the corner. I twasn't entirely but it was a bright spot at the time and part of a truly great age of animation. The series STARTED strong, season 1 is a banger but the creative team change hurt it a bit. Season 2 did bounce back in my eyes.. but season 3 caused me to fall all the way off, partly because back then I switched from cable.. and partly because their version of northampton was drug out to hell. And I say that with the original comics having the turtles away from new york for a year. I think the impulse was SIMILAR to that, have some wacky tension reducing side adventures.. but the problem is while there the problem was simply "a violence gang threw us out and took away our homes", bad but something they have time to think over, the problem here was "The kranng have taken new york".. and we're spending time with a sasquatch wanting to make out with donie, dream beavers and drag racing. I'll also always be bitter about the irma!kraang thing, as it felt like a waste of a character who tmnt media loves to ignore for some reason despite april amost never having any friends. Give april friends. They also ruined donnie and April
That said while I feel off I can't hate this incarnation: it was essentially a reboot of the 80's cartoon, bringing in a few elements from other sources, but mostly trying to make a serialized more serious show, but still with that goofy energy. And it worked for the most part when it was good and the later seasons seem to have picked things back up after the mess that was season 3 and it has some all time great new characters like bradford and xever, with the latter STILL not having been ported to any other continuity. A solid show that took a bad dive but seemed to end strongly.. then had to do another season but hey.
Sanjay and Craig: THEY MADE IT UP BONG. I'd have to say Megan. Shame they never did anything with her and Sanjay but she was a great side character. The show itself is decent. At itmes it wasn't my forte due to all the gross out, but I still think it was pretty good. I liked having a wing joint as a hangout (I love me some wings) it has a great voice cast, and was pretty fun. Not an all timer but a pretty good show.
Monsters Vs Aliens:
Tumblr media
This show sucks. It's clear unlike Penguins and Legends of Awesomeness they weren't given even a modest budget, just a paper clip and a piece of string and it shows and they go with the weird premise of having aliens live with them as wacky neighbors instead of the obvious one of.. just have the monsters fight aliens and other weirdness each episode. You can still make that comedy, easily. Having seen the movie which is decent enough, it's not that hard but they somehow took a pretty damn good premise and made it just boring sitcom stuff. Easily one of my least faviorite nicktoons of all time.. probably not worse than planet sheen, but still not good at all.
Breadwinners:
Tumblr media
This one like fanboy and chum chum was seen as the antichrist ast the time. And like fanboy and chum chum.. it's just mid. it's just trying to be the bog standard nicktoon. Unlike fanboy it';s world, while still wacky nonsense is at least a touch more consitant.. but it's your standard two dudes hang out cartoon. While this genre wasn't new (See Sniz and Fondue over on KaBlam or Angry Beavers , both on this very network), regular show did cause more to get greenlit. I don't think this nor sanjay and craig as they were accused are outright trying to rip off regular show. Both of these have more of a ren and stimpy vibe.. but unlike sanjay and craig which has it's own weird perspective this ones weird perspective just isn't entertaning or fun. I think I could dig it if it were actuallyf unny or batshit enough but it's neither. IT's just.. boring.

Decided to redraw a screenshot of a Super Moshi Missions trailer a while ago because why not?
Season 2 was probably my favourite Super Moshi season (and not just because these two were in it for like 3 missions)
Mind Candy really should've done more with these two goobers after 2012 imo

Continuing KO's cinema preferences talks: Would he enjoy The Saw (the franchise)? What about the silence of the lambs?
I got the impression Knock Out might enjoy horror films cuz he likes the gory effects and it’s fun to watch humans scramble around and die, so I think he’d like the Saw franchise! I think I’ve only seen the first… 5 or 7? movies in the series, though, and it was as a teenager, so I’m not sure how crazy the latter parts get LMAO 😂
I imagine the first movie might be kind of boring to KO, since I can’t imagine he’d be too invested in the squishies’ interpersonal drama, but after that he might find the creative torture devices fascinating and ponder how to apply them to Cybertronian anatomy—that one device that latched onto the guy’s back and pumped acid into his torso comes to mind.
Silence of the Lambs is one of my favourite films of all time, so I wish I could say that Knock Out would like it, BUT I THINK HE’D FIND IT KIND OF BORING 💀 The thriller, suspense, and psych-horror genres work cuz they present uncomfortable / stressful situations on the captive audience, but I’m not sure if KO would be able to immerse enough for that to be effective 🤔 You have to care about Clarice, be unnerved by Hannibal, be invested in the mystery (and whether Buffalo Bill gets caught or escapes)… And if KO primarily likes movies for a fun gory time, he’s not going to get that from SotL!
He might think the cannibalism and Bill’s desire to construct a human flesh suit are interesting (and potentially remind him of other ’Cons he’s met before), and the character dynamics are surprisingly rich, but he might walk out thinking it was just okay. Perhaps mildly disappointed there wasn’t that much cannibalism, when that’s supposed to be Hannibal’s thing. I think he might also be surprised that the cannibalism was like—cooking people into food, rather than biting into his victims insecticon / terrorcon / zombie-style.
I feel like his taste in movies would reflect his own personal proclivities to an extent—he’s visually-oriented, likes to win, likes to be entertained, has high-octane hobbies like street racing and vivisection. He’s very smart, but not cerebral or ruminating. He’s one of the bad guys, so of course he’s not gonna root for the good ones—he wants the nice, underdog protagonists to lose!
So I think he’d have more fun with fast-paced, action-packed flicks (especially if there are monsters) and probably laugh along to trashy splatter / slasher films. I think if a movie is too stupid it’ll have to be gory enough to balance that out, though.
… I think he would relish Prometheus (2012), up until the point David gets his shit rocked, and then he’d be miffed because he found some investment in the evil treacherous robot plotting against the idiot humans aboard his ship. (HE EVEN PUNISHED THEM FOR INTERFACING! DAVID MVP)

An Abbreviated History of Mecha Part 1: The Mighty Atomic Prelude (The 50's and 60's)
Tumblr media
Welcome to An Abbreviated History of Mecha anime. Today, we're starting at, as Fraulein Maria would say, at the very beginning. We're taking a quick peak at the beginning of the canon, which means that we're starting back in 1950 (specifically 1952). I should also confess right now: there are two series on here that are demonstrably NOT mecha shows. However, due to their sheer influence on Japanese media as a whole, I feel it is important to bring them up as being honorary mecha shows due to their sheer influence pop culture.
Tetsuwan Atom/Mighty Atom/Astro Boy (1952)
Tumblr media
Starting us off is Osamu Tezuka's seminal manga series, Mighty Atom. Known over here in the west as Astro Boy, this series would be what kickstarts a lot of the modern anime and manga industry due to its sheer popularity. Astro Boy would also be one of two series that would be emblematic of how Japanese pop culture would portray the recent use of atomic energy. It should also be worth noting that realizing that Astro technically is a mecha is what got me to start using a broader definition of mecha instead of the classic giant robot definition.
Due to its fame, Mighty Atom has receive multiple adaptations throughout the years. Of note are:
The original 1963 anime.
New Mighty Atom (1980) which updates the series to 1980's animation standards.
The 2003 anime, which does the same, but to the standards of early 2000's anime.
The 2009 CGI movie.
Gojira/Godzilla (1954, honorary mecha series 1)
Tumblr media
1954 would also give us Ishiro Honda's Godzilla, the movie that would make tokusatsu-styled live action stories in Japan. Godzilla, alongside RKO's King Kong, would play a large part in popularizing the concept of kaiju. And boy will kaiju play a big part in the history of the mecha canon. As we'll see soon enough, the history of tokusatsu heroes, kaiju, and robots are all intertwined with one another.
Godzilla has starred in numerous movies since the original, but for stories based off of the original there are:
Godzilla Raids Again (1955), a direct sequel.
Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidorah: All Out Monsters Attack (2001), a Heisei-era production that uses the original '54 Godzilla as a manifestation of the horrors of World War II.
Shin Godzilla (2016), a re-imagining of the original movie set in contemporary times directed by Hideakki Anno.
Godzilla Minus One (2023), the most recent outing inspired in part by GMK.
Tetsujin 28-go/Gigantor (1956)
Tumblr media
(Oh hey, this gif again!)
Tetsujin 28-go is the creation of one Mitsuteru Yokoyama and is generally regarded as the grandfather of the giant robot style of mecha. Tetsujin is unique amongst mecha in that it is controlled not by a pilot riding inside of it, but by a little kid with a controller. Tetsujin 28, alongside Mazinger Z, would help to codify a lot of the tropes common to the classic superhero mecha anime that would be prevalent in the 70's. Like Mighty Atom, Tetsujin would receive multiple adaptations throughout the decades.
Shin Tetsujin 28-Go/The New Adventures of Gigantor (1980), which updates Tetsujin's design to look more in line with something like Mazniger Z.
Tetsujin 28-go FX (1992), sporting a radically different look that's more akin to something out of the Brave Franchise.
Tetsujin 28 (2004), a faithful adaptation of the original manga (at least I think it is) directed by Yasuhiro Imagawa.
Cyborg 009 (1964)
Tumblr media
Created by Shotaro Ishinomori in 1964, Cyborg 009 is another classic human-sized mecha series. Cyborg 009 would be the first of many hits for Ishinomori, and he will be mentioned again later in this series.
Oh boy... I am not a Cyborg 009 nut, but in terms of adaptations, Cyborg 009 has:
The 1966 Film
The 1980 Film
009 Re:Cyborg (2012)
The Call For Justice Trilogy (2016)
The 1968 Anime
The 1979-1980 Anime
The 2001-2002 Anime (I actually remember when Toonami aired this series!)
Cyborg 009 vs Devilman (2015 OVA)
If you want to follow someone who follows a lot of Shotaro Ishinomori's works, I'd recommend checking out YouTuber Mercury Falcon for more info about Ishinomori.
Ultra Q and Ultraman (1966, honorary mecha series 2)
Tumblr media
(The urge to use a gif of Ingraman is strong)
Ultra Q and Ultraman are the first two entries of Tsuburaya's legendary Ultra franchise, with the latter in particular being one of the most famous pop culture icons of all time. Ultraman's influence on Japanese media is so large, that I'll be mentioning it at least once in relation to other series later on.
Ultraman, like Godzilla before him, would get the Hideaki Anno treatment with Shin Ultraman in 2022.
Giant Robo/Johnny Sokko and His Flying Robot (1967)
Tumblr media
Another one of Mitsuteru Yokoyama's classic manga series, Giant Robo deserves a mention due to its influence on tokusatsu. Giant Robo would usher in an era of tokusatsu that would rely on using giant robots as the main protagonist.
In terms of adaptations, there are two animated adaptations, but only one will be listed here:
GR: Giant Robo (2007)
If you want to learn a little bit more about the history behind Giant Robo, I'd recommend checking out blunova's video on Giant Robo for more info on this important series.
Conclusion
As the 60's would lead way into the 70's, we would see a lot more live action tokusatsu series involving giant robots. Of course, this would be untenable due to how expensive it was to do tokusatsu effects for television. However, one robot would appear in animation that would change everything.
(Read in the voice of Tessho Genda) AND ITS NAME IS...!!!!

20th Century Studios-90 Years of Unforgettable Characters Tribute
Since I already did my 90 Years of 20th Century Studios pic(my special take on the famous art-deco logo with the searchlights forming a 90 in the sky, similar to Fox’s 75th Anniversary variant in 2010) three days ago on May 31st(the day the studio was founded 90 years ago). I started making and drew another pic for 20th Century Studios’(formally 20th Century Fox) 90th Anniversary, this time a huge group pic showing many of the characters(both animated and live-action) that the studio had given us over the years and those I’ve grown up with and known about in a huge anniversary tribute drawing(similar to the ones I did for Nick in 2024 for it’s 45th Anniversary and for Warner Bros and Disney for their 100th Anniversaries in 2023).
So,here is a special 90th anniversary group pic featuring most of the characters from their films, cartoons, and television shows Fox has given us over the years, some of which I picked and while many were some of my favorites growing up such as:
-The Fox Fox(the mascot of Fox Kids who appeared in several 90's bumpers for Fox Kids,he is featured on the front. Also, before Disney acquired the Fox Kids library in 2001,right before buying Fox in 2019,20th Century-Fox used to own Fox Kids and was the children's block for the Fox television network(originally owned by 20th Century Fox,but now spunoff into it's own thing in 2019 as Fox Corporation),since they produced several kids shows under the Fox's Childrens Productions/Fox Kids Worldwide unit such as Bobby's World,Digimon-Digital Monsters,Peter Pan and The Pirates, and Eek! The Cat).
-Kevin McCallister(Home Alone franchise).
-The Xenomorph(the creature from the Alien franchise)
-Predator
-Cornelius(Planet of The Apes franchise)
-Neytiri(Avatar movies)
-Mighty Mouse and Heckle and Jeckle(Terrytoons, the reason I featured them as part of the pic cause before CBS Films(later known as Viacom and Paramount Global)bought the studio in 1955,Fox was the main distributor and original force behind the original Terrytoons shorts).
-Homer and Bart Simpson(The Simpsons)
-Louise Belcher(Bob's Burgers)
-Stewie Griffin(Family Guy)
-Eek! The Cat
-Bobby Generic(Bobby's World)
-Olive(Olive The Other Reindeer)
-Bender(Futurama)
-Ron(Ron's Gone Wrong)
-Raggedy Ann and Andy(Raggedy-Ann and Andy: A Musical Adventure)
-Mr.Fox(Fantastic Mr. Fox)
-Lance Sterling(Spies In Disguise)
-Horton the Elephant(Dr. Suess' Horton Hears A Who!)
-Snoopy(The Peanuts Movie)
-Scrat(Ice Age franchise)
-Rodney Copperbottom(Robots)
-Anastasia
-Maria(The Book of Life)
-C-3PO and R2-D2(Star Wars franchise,I find it funny since before Disney bought Fox in 2019,they bought the rights to the Star Wars franchise and Lucasfilm in 2012,since Fox originally distributed and co-produced the first 6 Star Wars films).
-Buffy The Vampire Slayer
-Batty Koda(Ferngully:The Last Rainforest)
-Bartok(Anastasia and Bartok The Magnificent)
-Hank Hill(King of The Hill)
-Deadpool
-Wolverine/Logan(X-Men films/Deadpool and Wolverine)
-Pupa(Solar Opposites)
-Greg Heffley(The Diary of A Wimpy Kid film trilogy)
-Necron 99/Peace(Wizards)
-Roger the Alien(American Dad)
-Blu(Rio)
I also included the logos to 20th Century Pictures,Inc. and Fox Film Corporation(two of 20th Century Studios' predecessors)and 20th Century-Fox(the original name for the studio, before after the Disney acquisition in 2019,it got renamed to 20th Century Studios),as well as the logos for The X-Files(Fox's hit science fiction series and one of their biggest TV hits) and The Fantastic Four(which Fox produced the 2005 film(and it's 2007 sequel) and later,a failed 2015 reboot, but now,Marvel Studios is bringing and rebooting the Fantastic Four into the MCU with a new film coming out next month,"The Fantastic Four:First Steps".)
Thanks for giving us a nearly a century of groundbreaking films, unforgettable characters, iconic moments, and contributing to the world of enterainment,20th Century Studios! Even if you got bought and your now under Disney now since 2019,you're still doing great and still remaining active, producing more box-office hits and making great films to this day, even doing better than what your sister studio was doing at the time(Disney with it's live-action remakes of it's original animated films and it's own Hollywood studio and Pixar now producing sequels and prequels combined with originals). I hope you do more great with Predator-Badlands and Avatar:Fire and Ash coming out later this year and your TV units(20th Television and it's TV animation unit producing adult animated shows such as The Simpsons,Family Guy,American Dad,Bob's Burgers,Solar Opposites,The Great North, and Futurama, with a King of The Hill revival coming out on Hulu on Augest 4th this year)are also doing great under Disney as well.
