My thoughts about my Tumblr under the cut. What do the kids say these days? Something something, rent lowering gun shots?

I started this side-Tumblr account as a medium to think through my stories, establish accountability for myself by posting WIPs and snippets, as well as share cool moodboard ideas and art created for or from my fanfics. After meeting other folks on Twitter and Discord, that struck me as a bit egocentric, because why wouldn't I want to share the stuff of my talented friends, too? And then I started to reblog other content that I liked that was on-brand with my theme, which is Rogue Trader fanfic and fanart.

Blog history out of the way, let's talk about content. On my little blog, you are just not going to see a lot of head canons or meta-critiques. If you want my takes, go read my fanfics, otherwise, I'm not going to risk yucking on someone else's yum. And I've seen the raging head canon debates! I don't want that on my pretty fanfic and fanart, sometimes memey, Tumblr. That isn't what I want in my space.

As for what takes up that space, well, there's no right, special privilege, or entitlement as to what I post or reblog. I love the stuff my friends make and I love the stuff that people I don't know make that my friends reblog. But even then, not everything makes the cut.

Not getting a reblog, like, or follow, or being unfollowed, is not a personal slight or an attack. I have been on Tumblr since the early oughts and I am mystified that this is the new peception. There could be any number of reasons why I don't do the Thing - you've got content that's already similar to a lot of other stuff I follow and I've got too much of it already and need to trim it down; maybe you have headcanons and ideas that I don't want to read (but that does NOT mean that I don't support your right to have them, let's make that clear); maybe you post a lot of Other Fandom content that I'm not in or into; maybe you format your posts in ways that are unreadable; maybe its all of the above and I don't know you enough to give you a pass about it; or maybe there's just so much content on my dash that I missed your great post that a mutual reblogged. Please don't take it personally. I don't take it personally when someone doesn't follow me or reblog my stuff - I'm not owed anything by anyone and I can't force anyone to like my stuff. I can't be the only one who understands that others, like me, are but one person and can only engage with so much content in their day, whether that's fanfic, Tumblr, or anything else. Maybe that isn't obvious though.

And, again, this my blog, and I'm allowed to do what I want with it within Tumblr's terms of service. I owe no explanation to anyone, but now you've all now gotten to peer behind the veil. Understand that I curate my Tumblr experience to avoid using the block button.

"But Holy," you cry, "The Rogue Trader tags are filled with things that you should be engaging with. You need to look there!"

First, should is such an ugly word. I don't get paid to be in fandom. I'm not a public figure. I'm not an Owlcat employee. I'm not a Games Workshop writer. I'm an old, married woman with a fulltime job and a commute who writes fanfiction for her own enjoyment when she gets a spare minute. You can't make me do anything, and if you tried, then you'd know that making my Tumblr experience a chore makes it unfun and so I will leave and go elsewhere. You'll still get the fanfic, but no sneaky peekies or commissioned fanart - you'll have to wait for it to get posted to Ao3.

Second, I learned in the early days of the Rogue Trader fandom to stay out of the tags, and I very much have continued to adhere to that practice. In the days of yore, the tags were filled with nothing but negativity and insults (sometimes hurled directly at me for my fanfic(s)!), and that's not changed all that much in recent months, though now there are new targets (good for me, bad for everyone else). So, I'm not in the tags. I never will be in the tags. I won't see anything you post unless I'm tagged in it or someone I follow reblogs it and it's on my feed when I'm browsing.

And, honestly, those early fandom experiences and some of these recent ones have only served to make me increasingly wary of folks I don't know who occupy space in those very same tags. I challenge anyone to remain warm and open when you've had folks faking drama for their own self-image and messaging you for months to kill yourself, while others threaten to find where you live and do the job that your own cowardly hand won't. :) There are crazy, obsessive, and out of touch people in the world, and I will always protect myself and those I love first. That includes protecting the content on my dash and how I choose to use and interact with Tumblr (and other social media) for my own safety and sanity. If you think that's selfish, you know how to unfollow me.

But if, for whatever reason, you WANT my attention, if you just know in your heart of hearts that we are DESTINED to be mutuals and besties, and you're not willing to wait for the Introverted stray cat in me to warm up and trust you of her own volition, then please just send me a DM. Make a comment on a post. At me in an ask challenge or something. I do eventually notice! And we probably will become besties and mutuals. And if we don't hit it off, well, that's life, we move on and there're no hard feelings.

But without reaching out, don't assume that I'm in some tower brushing my hair and ignoring you. You're giving me (and my hair) way too much credit.

Ok so briefly because I do actually have a lovely big block of time to get work done today:

This has all sucked. I feel like no one is having a good time and that also sucks. This hobby is supposed to be fun.

I have heard from so many people that they also feel like there is no place for community here and that it feels like the community that exists is an echo of the actual conversation, which is in discords that are unclear on how you can participate or if you are even welcome. I've also heard from people in those groups who point out the very recent history of this fandom that even I was here for, when there were active bullies in the main tag, hence the desire to not post here.

Both of these things can be true without anyone being evil.

I do really want there to be a place here on this cursed website where people feel like they can talk about Heinrix or their OCs or anything else and not feel like they are talking to a closed door and I don't think it's the job of any particular person to make that happen, so I'm trying to figure out how I can help with that.

For now, I've curated my space, because I know I'm particularly sensitive to feeling rejected right now due to my personal nonsense. I'm thinking up what I feel like is missing here and how we can make that happen. No one is expected to jump in if it doesn't serve them.

I see this upcoming dlc as an opportunity and IDK about your rogue trader, but mine loves to talk about opportunity. Let's play fucking dolls y'all.

The latter two stories have too a page in AO3! See chapters structured as actual stories and not just one shots there! With a narrative! More secondary characters! Equal amounts of smut! A bit more of gore sometimes because I feel more comfortable depicting those themes over there than actually here!

honestly the moment i started thinking about this i suddenly forgot i like things sometimes lol

okay so,

Music: i know broad topic ! but music has been repeatedly saving my life since i was 13 so yeah! i specifically like symphonic metal so much it really combines my love for heavy gritty shit with the huge dramatically theatrical themes and also i like Numetal metalcore deathcore, the topics in these genres are very real and human they dont shy away from the ugly side of being alive and they dont care about being "hardcore elitist" like the rest of the scene, i also recently got into Goth music specifically ethereal goth again just hits the spot with the dramatically ethereal themes

games: i love games in general i love rpgs and point and click ones i know some people frown on that but idc lol unfortunately i am poor so i dont get to experience alot of games as i cant keep up with the many consoles and pc specs the new games require but what i can get my hand on i play forever!

Dragon age: im very new to the game and fandom only started playing last october but my god am i hooked im reading all these philosophical analysis pieces dissecting every word i come across i think i've replayed inquisition 5 times since october despite DA2 being my favorite!

Baldur's gate 3: im generally interested in D&D and the fantasy world of it so BG3 was like if you took that and intensified it by 1 million

warhammer 40k: this is the newest addition to the list i only played Rogue trader for now but damn i think i've spent a week straight researching it last month again i love big expansive fantasy worlds and steampunk and this is just a sweet spot between the two

the sims 4: i love the sims 4 so much when it allows me to do what i actually want to do meaning i hate that most of the content it has out for it is all sorta mundane realistic shit, i wish it was more fantasy geared ( are we surprised) if we ever get a fantasy life simulation game its over for sims 4 for me, but for now i enjoy it immensely because with the power of mods and my own storytelling and lore making i can shape it exactly how i want and that is a shit ton of fun

webtoon: i know some people think its cringe but idgf AGAIN i love fantasy stories and i originally consumed them by reading endless books and this is just an extension of that i read my webtoons daily as i have my breakfast lol

Lord of the rings: fucking obsessed BUT im not deep into the lore like some amazing people are i wish i had the attention span for such an extremely deep rabbit-hole!

fantasy maps and weapons: 2 things i research and draw often just always doodling and learning new things about them i love making fantasy maps and imagining the travel routs of the world

poems: i love both writing and reading poems although i dont write them much anymore i love reading them i stole a poems book from the school library once because i loved the poems and they were gonna put it in the back to make space for a popular series of novels

sewing: i would say fashion but im not interested in whatever weird planet destroying slave labor flaunting of wealth thats going on right now, i drawing new clothes and making them even if its hard as shit for me, i enjoy gathering inspiration making mood boards extracting motifs and designing clothes i do love sewing alot to but i get lazy with it because it involves math lol

ART: i dont think there was ever a time in my life where i didnt make any kind of art piece, even when i had an art block and couldn't get inspired by shit i still made something...badly... but still art is one of the few ways i can express myself and while i wish my skill didnt fluctuate so violently between " hey im skilled i know what im doing this is easy" to "this is a lost cause it feels like i've forgotten how to draw a straight line i should give up art forever and assimilate and become boring" i still live and breath art

The Fool

A daughter of psyker, born on board the Black Ship, Iza had little chance to keep her life, yet, she was lucky. A group inside Astra Thelepatica needed people with a high chance of psy-manifestation to test and train. Years spent in Scholastia Psykana facilities gave Iza a fair amount of loyalty indoctrination… and a couple of examples of people twisting the letter of Lex Imperialis to better serve its spirit: the start of her personal collection of Iconoclast icons.

After a sanctioning that went wrong and blocked out a major part of her potential, she was trained as a telepath and assigned to Navis Imperialis, where she had her moment of triumph and thus attracted Theodora's attention.

Needless to say, Isabella wasn't ready for the task, and when she had to take responsibility for the dynasty and protectorate, she had only two people to rely on: Abelard and… an image of the only Rogue Trader she knew. And, for a long time, she tried hard to be Theodora v2 in image, in mannerism, and sometimes even in action.

The Strength

For a long time, Iza treated 'Isabella von Valancius' as a construct, she stopped to believe in her titles as soon as Abelard's voice pronounced them dissolved in the air. Yet she was stuck in the role of Rogue Trader and had to play it as well as possible because she was a big fan of living.

But then something happened, and by something I mean "Comorragh". Stripped of all her wealth, influence, and regalia, of her image, of her people, Isabella was left with what she was. And it turned out that a bald psyker who has nothing but the adamantium will and talent for commerce and negotiations is pretty damn good for surviving the horrors of Dark City.

She made it, she saved her people, and she stopped them from killing each other (oh they TRIED). The person who came back from Commorragh knew her worth and her strength. Isabella still respected Theodora but chased her shadow away from her ship. She never asked Abelar to introduce her since then.

The Hermit

The power corrupts, but the power was never something Isabella wanted. All she wanted was peace, and maybe she could have found it as a Rogue Trader, but among other things, she was a psyker.

Her power started to grow after the Night of Change aka the night she became a Rogue Trader. After meeting a certain birdie Isabella reached her predicted potential… but didn't stop there. As not to write an essay: she suffered, and she suffered, and she suffered a lot.

So at some point, she prepared an heir and regents and exiled herself to a small house surrounded by miles and miles of nonhabitant space, and got the biggest luxury an Imperial citizen can ever afford: peace. She left the Expanse as free and unruly as it was before her arrival, but her protectorate was safe, stable, and a better place even for those who were considered second-grade citizens.

Isabella's condition was getting worse, so after about ten years, she decided to end her life.

4) What fandoms do you write for?

I mostly write for BG3 and Dragon Age, but I've been dabbling with Rogue Trader fic lately. I probably won't post any of it, but it's fun to jot down moments! I've also dabbled with Fire Emblem fic but that stuff will never see the light of day

5) Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

I try to but I have a backlog of comments I need to respond to oops...I don't mean to ignore anyone! I just get busy :')

6) What’s the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

probably A Final Death, and I actually ended up going with a slightly less angsty ending for that than what I had originally planned. I have some solavellan stuff half-written that ends on angst as well (at least for now) but I haven't post any of it yet

7) What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Oh...that's a hard one. I'm bad at finishing things lmao but out of the things that have endings...

8) Do you get hate on fics?

I haven't yet but in my defense I don't have a big following. It wouldn't bother me much if I did unless someone was harassing me, and then I'd just block them. I cannot STAND when people hate on other people's fics though like jeez find something better to do with your time...

9) Do you write smut?

I don't <3 I just don't feel like I write it well and I prefer to write things that have either a plot or some other focus (angst typically) because I enjoy exploring characters and worlds. I know some excellent smut writers, though, so I don't think the world needs my shoddy smut attempts when I can just support my friends <3

10) Do you write crossovers?

I haven't written any crossovers in terms of "X characters are now in Y world" (I'm not drawn to that tbh), but A Macabre Masquerade does kind of play with crossover universes because a bunch of different Tav/Durge universes start to collide in that one

11) Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not that I'm aware of. I'd be surprised if it happened to me haha my stuff is pretty tame. No one has told me about any cases of people stealing my ideas either, but tbh, there are no new ideas under the sun. So long as you're not stealing my actual words or feeding my stuff into an AI, I don't really mind

12) Have you ever had a fic translated?

Not yet! That would be cool tho

13) Have you ever cowritten a fic before?

Not officially, but my Dragon Age longfic, Bound by Blood, features a warden that belongs to one of my best friends. I always send her stuff that features her character so that she can let me know if anything is out of character, wrong, or etc, or I ask her ahead of time how her character might react in certain scenarios. So it's not technically cowritten but it's collaborative.

14) What’s your all-time favorite ship?

oh god......idek how am I supposed to pick out thousands and millions out there haha

to write for? my favorite ship to write for is Alistair x Warden (specifically my warden obviously haha) but also like exploring the tension in solavellan ships and I'm a sucker for Gale x Tav too

15) What’s the WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

hahahahaha......all of them :')

I'm notoriously bad at finishing long hobby/fan works. I struggle to meet deadlines on important things IRL and fan stuff never has a deadline soooo

but of the things I need to finish (In Fathoms Below, A Macabre Masquerade, Bound by Blood) probably the one that will get finished last (if ever) is Bound by Blood because it's so long in scope

16) What are your writing strengths?

I'm told I'm pretty good at descriptions and setting the mood/setting. I have to know where I am, what the vibe is, etc before I can really dive into the dialogue or action. I can't just throw my characters in a blank white box! So I spend some time setting the scene, and I think I do that well.

I also think I write action well and it's why I like writing adventure fic. Action mostly shows up in fics like In Fathoms Below (some of my favorite action scenes) or occasional one shots like Love and Loss and eventually Bound by Blood will have plenty, but...yeah haha

17) What are your writing weaknesses?

Smut. Sorry </3

I'm also overlong when I write basically anything. I'm a yapper, and I feel like I need to tell you EVERYTHING haha I struggle with being brief

I also feel like I don't do interiority/internal tension as good as I could, because I fall into the "she felt/she thought" instead of showing that in deep or evocative ways

and also I don't think I write poetically or with a lot of rich imagery and that's something I want to work on

18) Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in a fic?

I love it! If it's correctly written in the other language haha

I don't personally speak or write in any other language well (I've tried but my brain doesn't learn languages well) but if I did. I would check with someone who speaks the language and have them help me on the lines. For fantasy languages like DA elven, I do my best but there's not a full lexicon to work with so I tend to stay in my lane there, too, rather than make anything up.

19) First fandom you wrote for?

Like, ever? even if it hasn't seen the light of day ever? Probably Harry Potter I think...but I can't remember because I didn't consider myself writing fanfic anything until a little over ten years ago, though I'm sure I messed around with it before then

20) Favorite fic you’ve ever written?

Oh man idk if I can pick...Bound by Blood is my baby, the fic I wanted to write 10 years ago and never did, but In Fathoms Below is a fun romp that I enjoy writing when I can. But in terms of oneshots, my most recent one, Deep Past the Heart sticks out as a good one that I am fond of
