I think a big thing with rollplayers, metagaming, "murderhobos", killer dms and the like. Is that for a long time you had v few options to play table games with, before computers. And as such. A lot of people played with assholes. And then the tales were spread, and here we are.
Yeah, and that's something where I think we need to start with a clean slate. Like, the problem isn't the fact that that guy was metagaming/powerplaying/rollplaying, he was just an asshole. Even "roleplaying" (If we take it to mean "my character wouldn't do that" actor stance portrayal) can be bad in the hands of an asshole and used to justify lots of shitty behavior, but we haven't concluded, as a hobby, that "roleplaying" is bad, have we (actually the reason for that is that despite it being a form of antagonistic play for a long time "I'm just roleplaying" was very much valorized as a way to excuse bad faith play).
Anyway we need to kill the past.

Not following you for ttrpg opinions myself, but your last reblog has got me curious, what do you mean with "roll playing vs role playing"?
A lot of people like to use the term "role-players" to refer to players and GMs who favor ignoring game mechanics for the sake of narrative, and use (often derisively) the term "roll-players" to refer to people who Don't Do That, with the implicit or (more often than not) explicit value judgement that "roll-playing" is an inherently inferior playstyle for dumb grognards who can't appreciate the depth of storytelling.
I think the distinction is silly. I've seen people ciriticize "rollplayers" for "thinking mechanics should trump roleplaying" but like. Engaging with the mechanics is ALSO roleplaying. These people seem to have a narrow view of "roleplaying" that exclusively includes playing out social encounters through improv. (E.g. a lot of people say shit like "Oh in my game we rarely do combat, we mostly roleplay, there are sessions where we don't touch the dice at all!")
Ultimately I think this belief comes from the way a lot of people seem to uncritically accept the idea that roleplaying and mechanics are mutually exclusive because mechanics "get in the way of the story" and that this is a normal and expected part of RPGs (and not a clear sign that you're playing the wrong game for the kind of story you want to experience).
Anyway my point is that the word "roll-player" was probably a pretty witty zinger the first time someone said it forty-something years ago and it should have stayed that instead of becoming part of some people's entire philosophy for how ttrpgs should be played.

Listen: I accidentally drank more than I expected tonight. I'm about to play Rollplayer with wife but before I do let me just throw it out there that when I hit 200 followers (I'm at 175 now) I'll post the human on robot sex scene I wrote for a failed novel like five years ago.
It's the only erotica I've ever written and I don't think it'll count as erotica to most people but I don't actually think it's terrible.
Don't let me forget. Clove commits to the bit. I love you all drink water think about a friendly frog.

Are you aware that there seems to be a small group of sonic rollplayers gathering?
They don't seem to acknowledge you at any point, and as an anon very interested in drama, I believe it would be beneficial to the empire to interact with them.
Tumblr media
Some of the little pests have already been popping up in my notifications here and there. I suppose I'll respond in time... Seems I can't get any peace even on the internet, I'm just trying to talk with my adoring fans and they stick their noses in like the nuisances they are!
Tumblr media
Ehh, maybe I will. It's just pretty bothersome that this couldn't end up being a place for me to finally get a break and relax from constantly seeing their faces and dealing with their constant interferences. They just always have to come along and try to ruin my fun...
Tumblr media
Well, I won't let them! I'll make sure to make their time here much more miserable than what they hope to accomplish for mine!

“You’re people rollplaying but there are people who see your posts that maybe be personally affected and have real feelings about what is happening in real life so it’s extremely considerate of you both to be so sensitive about it. I appreciate when people are thinking about the people who are actually going through whatever the rollplayer or writer is talking about. As maya or eve said, whoever it was, real life tragic situations are not to be taken lightly so thank you both for being aware. You have gentle souls.”
I completely understand the gravity of the situation, that’s why I wanted to put the little psa that I did. Even though I had an answer as a character as well, I wanted to make sure it was about helping those in need, not acting as if I was suffering from it or going through it at the moment. I try to be as aware as possible because I know that everyone has real life experiences and things they are going through so I always want to be mindful. I never want to glorify or take anything lightly that someone has struggled with or is currently struggling with. I’m glad I was able to communicate my sympathies with my last ask and that it was well received. Again, I am keeping everyone in the LA area in my thoughts and prayers. I hope everyone is safe and those on the frontlines come home safely as well 🤍
Agree with that!!🤍

Imagine going to a board game and calling your opponent a ROLLplayer
It ain't easy making it as a TTRPG design studio when it takes a baseline amount of effort just to convince a lot of people that your profession is even real. Like, those rules and numbers, we didn't just fill the pages up with a bunch of random nonsense, we put those in the rulebook for a reason, so that following them would result in particular challenges and experiences.
Game design is real! It is possible to play a TTRPG wrong, because the TTRPG's rulebook exists solely to tell you how to play this particular TTRPG right, and in a well-designed game, that will lead to a particular experience that the authors are trying to sell you.

I DON'T KNOW WHAT I'M DOING! :D
This is a developing multi-muse RP blog. After being convinced to try by my bestie, I'm down to attempt practicing more roleplay with characters from some interesting or fun shows and games, including My Hero Academia, Pokémon, Steven Universe, and hopefully maybe more? "Quick" Notes:
Semi-Decent, Quasi-Experienced Roleplayer (and Rollplayer), but currently very new to doing so via Tumblr.
I live for romance and shipping, with a decent passion for combat. I will sometimes initiate ideas that might lead to shipping (or combat (or both)), but only after having clear consent to it first.
If your character is an OC, I'd want a page with some info on them before roleplaying with them. (Hopefully any OCs of my own will also be similarly fleshed out soon enough.)
I am new to, but also open to, potential crossovers, if they are interesting or fun.
If the writing starts out fun enough, I'm happy to make new friends!
With established characters, I am open to potential changes in their canon.
I suffer from dysfunction issues even without working 8+ hours on the graveyard shift, so posts can sometimes be irregular, if not a struggle to come out.
I am also a victim of mild anxiety and confidence issues, which might affect both my perception and ability to write.
My normal type of roleplaying defaults to literate paragraph style. I would need to be coached into trying different methods.
I'm also a big fan of basic formatting, at least running my posts to avoid too many basic errors such as spelling and syntax. I can also understand being wordy, but break up walls of text with a break every now and then for the eyes. Meaner Notes Rules
Be reasonable when it comes to your writing. No drama, no godmodding, no meta-ing, or similar. We're weaving stories here.
I tend to need to be somewhat familiar with who I'm roleplaying with before I get too comfortable with NSFW content.
I am not the biggest fan of Tragedies. I'm fine with writing dramas, and some traumas, but I prefer being involved in stories that have happy, or at least bittersweet endings. Muses
Deku (Izuku Midoriya) of MHA
GREAT EXPLOSION MURDER GOD DYNAMIGHT (Katsuki Bakugo) of MHA
Uravity (Ochaco Uraraka) of MHA
OC Pokémon Trainers
Sheena (Mystery Girl) of Steven Universe
Potential UTDR OC
Candy Chiu, Wendy Corduroy, or Pacifica Northwest, of Gravity Falls
More to Come?

Hey Guys. I have a MHA Discord server. We got together there to enjoy MHA together.
The following roles exist:
1.) Fan: You just want to share your joy with others , enjoy FanFictions or Fanart? Then you can enjoy exactly that on the server and exchange with others.
There are channels where you can post what you like.
2) Rollplayer: You are a rollplayer and want to RP with others? Then you can do that on the server too.
And: If you can't be active sometimes, that's not bad either ^^
If you want to be a part of it, write me and I'll send you the link.

There are multiple ways of learning. There's book learning, where you open up the book and read things to learn... and then there's also the type of learning where someone tutors you and you pick up stuff from there. There's also learning by observing. And there's even learning by being tossed into the deep end and thrashing about.
I have played D&D for decades. I started with Advanced AD&D, 1st edition. I went on to play Basic and Expert D&D, back to Advanced, then to 2nd and 3rd editions, and then moved over to Pathfinder before nosing around in 5th edition just enough to know some of what is going on there. I read all the books and I'm one of those GMs for Life (though my spouse did GM for a bit so I could play again).
Some of my players are similar to me that they've read the books and know many rules by heart. Some are more... learning by observing. And some of my former players were the tossed in the deep end type of gamer who only knew rolling dice and a little roleplay. (Yes, a female gamer can be a rollplayer who only plays Fighters and gleefully beheads monsters all the time. I had one of those gamers.)
Heck, you want to see various types of gamers? Watch an episode of Critical Role! You have people who know the rules by heart. You have more casual players who know some of the rules but not all of them. You have guest players showing up who are rules sharks and others who either don't know the rules or pretend not to. And watch Ashley Johnson, who for the first two campaigns had a job that would pull her away from the game frequently so she was constantly trying to figure out her characters' abilities... and this third campaign has been there the entire time and knows her druid/rogue's abilities quite well and frequently pulls out delightful surprises that have her be the Most Valuable Player of those episodes.
I don't care what type of gamer you are. You are welcome at my table. And I'll help you where you need help, and encourage you to be the type of gamer you want to be. Because ultimately, this is about having fun. If you don't know many of the rules? So be it. (Nor is it even a "timeliness" thing because of my various players, one is a lady rules lawyer who frequently pulls stuff out from her hat to screw over my villains but also takes 20+ minutes per turn contemplating all of her actions and what she should do to maximize her mischief.)
I think an important part of the "D&D is easy to learn" argument is that a lot of those people don't actually know how to play D&D. They know they need to roll a d20 and add some numbers and sometimes they need to roll another type of die for damage. A part of it is the culture of basically fucking around and letting the GM sort it out. Players don't actually feel the need to learn the rules.
Now I don't think the above actually counts as knowing the rules. D&D is a relatively crunchy game that actually rewards system mastery and actually learning how to play D&D well, as in to make mechanically informed tactical decisions and utilizing the mechanics to your advantage, is actually a skill that needs to be learned and cultivated. None of that is to say that you need to be a perfectly tuned CharOp machine to know how to play D&D. But to actually start to make the sorts of decisions D&D as a game rewards you kind of need to know the rules.
And like, a lot of people don't seem to know the rules. They know how to play D&D in the most abstract sense of knowing that they need to say things and sometimes the person scowling at them from behind the screen will ask them to roll a die. But that's hardly engaging with the mechanics of the game, like the actual game part.
And to paraphrase @prokopetz this also contributes to the impression that other games are hard to learn: because a lot of other games don't have the same culture of play of D&D so like instead of letting new players coast by with a shallow understanding of the rules and letting the GM do all the work, they ask players to start making mechanically informed decisions right away. Sure, it can suck for onboarding, but learning from your mistakes can often be a great way to learn.
