Rosa Mundi

Rosa Mundi is a beautiful old rose shrub variety that is known for its striped pink and white flowers.

It is a member of the Gallica rose family.

It is a medium-sized shrub that can grow to be 4-6 feet tall and wide.

It can be pruned between Nov and February to required shape.

The flowers are semi-double and have a light fragrance.

The roses are coming into bloom!

Plenty to see on beds 4, 5 & 15.

We grow over 250 different varieties

"Biber es muy agradecido"

[La violinista francesa Amandine Beyer. / ÓSCAR VÁZQUEZ]

Amandine Beyer lleva al disco para Harmonia Mundi las 'Sonatas del Rosario' de Biber que desde hace un año toca en escena junto a Rosas, la compañía de la bailarina y coreógrafa Teresa de Keersmaeker

El próximo 17 de febrero Harmonia Mundi publica la última grabación de Amandine Beyer (Aix-en-Provence, 1974), las Sonatas del Rosario de Biber. Beyer es una de las violinistas barrocas más aclamadas de nuestros días. Profesora en la prestigiosa Schola Cantorum de Basilea, dirige a Gli Incogniti, el conjunto que fundó en 2006. Desde febrero de 2022 recorre los escenarios de medio mundo tocando estas Sonatas del Rosario  para un espectáculo que Teresa de Keersmaeker ha coreografiado para su compañía, Rosas. Hablé con ella el pasado 25 de enero apenas una hora antes de salir a escena para una función con la obra en Lisboa. 

–¿Cómo fue meterse en este proyecto?

–Fue una iniciativa de Teresa de Keersmaeker. Es una mujer muy ecléctica en sus gustos. Le encanta coreografiar música de todo tipo, del medieval al Barroco, clásico, contemporáneo, pop, jazz, y busca siempre que los músicos estén a la vista, en el escenario. Le gusta mucho este trabajo gestual. A mí me parece que su danza hace que la música se despliegue, como cuando pones unas flores en agua y se van abriendo. Hay gente que con la música ve colores, formas, pero para mí esta coreografía es la máxima realización de lo que escuchamos.

–Había trabajado ya con ella...

–Este es nuestro tercer proyecto juntas. Hice un espectáculo hace muchos años que se titulaba Partita 2. Yo tocaba Bach y junto a mí había sólo dos bailarines, la propia Teresa y Boris Charmatz. Y después hicimos también un espectáculo con los Conciertos brandeburgueses. Le encantan los ciclos. Eran los seis conciertos, pero fue con otro grupo, B’Rock, yo liderando la orquesta. Estos dos proyectos los hicimos 80 y 75 veces. Es una compañía que gira muchísimo, y es la ocasión para hacer un programa muchas veces. A mí, que toco básicamente música instrumental, es algo que me pasa poco. Muchas veces el programa lo haces una vez, con suerte, tres o cuatro. Venimos de hacer dos funciones en Oporto, ahora dos en Lisboa y luego vamos a Amberes, pero a veces son cuatro en París, cinco en Bruselas, y esto es muy interesante porque te permite ver cómo se desarrolla el espectáculo en el tiempo.

–Desde el punto de vista del instrumentista, ¿tocar las 16 sonatas del ciclo seguidas es tan agotador como parece?

–Más aún, creo. Me parece que escucharlo es más fácil [risas].

–¿Lo había hecho?

–No. Nunca. Lo escuché una vez así en un monasterio brasileño a un grupo local, y fue muy especial. Pero como intérprete yo no me planteaba nunca hacer esto. Cuando pasamos por Sevilla el espectáculo estaba desarrollándose, porque hasta ese momento lo habíamos hecho sólo en Bélgica, y estaba yendo a mejor, pero aún estaba por crecer. Ahora, que lo hemos hecho ya como 25 veces, sigue siendo agotador, pero está todo muy pulido y resulta más llevadero; así y todo, estamos buscando la manera de aligerar algunas cosas.

–La scordatura obliga a usar varios violines en la interpretación, ¿lo ha hecho también así en la grabación?

–Sí. Sé de grabaciones con un solo violín, creo que Andrew Manze lo hizo así, pero por suerte cuando hicimos la grabación ya llevábamos varias funciones y tenía los violines muy preparados, lo tenía muy aprendido. Me habría resultado más difícil volver a un solo violín teniendo que cambiar las cuerdas. En el directo lo hacía con cinco violines, y luego cuatro, porque uno se perdió (aunque lo encontramos después).

–Cualquier violinista dirá que Bach es el summum. Para alguien que ha hecho tanta música del XVII como usted, ¿qué papel juega Biber?

–Con estas sonatas se esmeró muchísimo. Es una montaña dura de subir, pero me encanta. Biber era violinista y esto se nota mucho en su escritura. Le gustaba tocar y aunque es muy difícil, por la scordatura, por la variedad, la velocidad, la doble cuerda, la duración, todo lo que escribe está siempre dentro del instrumento, no hay nada de una dificultad extrema, es siempre agradable de tocar y muy agradecido, cualquier esfuerzo que haces para estudiar, la música te lo recompensa. Con Bach no siempre es así, la música de Bach tiene un componente que a veces cuesta pillar. Sin embargo, con Biber hay una inmediatez enorme. Es como si entraras en una habitación muy grande, y luego te ofrece muchos rincones que explorar, pero no cuesta demasiado hacerlo, porque es muy generoso con el instrumento. Es agotador físicamente por muchas razones, pero no psicológicamente.

–Está muy reciente su último disco dedicado a Vivaldi, que el próximo viernes trae a Sevilla...

–Sí, es verdad que los dos discos están muy cercanos, pero quería sacar este Biber ya. Después creo que nos vamos a calmar un poco. Y lo de Sevilla es una adaptación del disco. El CD lo hacemos con un conjunto grande, con trompas, oboes… y a Sevilla vamos con un equipo más reducido, pero eso es normal, mover a un conjunto tan grande es muy caro y esta gira española que incluye conciertos en Salamanca, Madrid y Sevilla es una versión un poco camerística, con partes iguales y otras casi iguales, por ejemplo el concierto que da título al programa, Il mondo al rovescio, se toca en su versión original para violín y violonchelo, porque en el disco está ampliado con dos traversos, dos oboes… A pesar de todo es un gran programa y hacemos algunos conciertos que no están en el disco. 

–Hace mucha música del siglo XVII, pero también del Clasicismo (recuerdo su Mozart con la OBS o su disco de Haydn), ¿se ve en el futuro con Beethoven?

–Estoy en ello. En mayo voy a tocar con la Joven Orquesta del Festival de Saintes el Concierto de Beethoven. He trabajado con ellos este invierno y me encanta. Estoy estudiando mucho, pero combinarlo con Biber es complicado. Lo estudié hace mucho tiempo con el violín moderno. Ahora estoy replanteándome muchas cosas.

–¿Con qué violín piensa tocarlo?

–Lo tocaré con una copia brasileña de un Guadagnini que me gusta mucho. Fue con el que grabé el disco de Haydn y lo uso también en las Sonatas de Biber. Tiene una doble vida ahora. De día lo tengo preparado para Beethoven y por la noche lo cambio para Biber. Está entre dos mundos. Y la verdad que no sé si es más difícil tocar todo Biber o el Concierto de Beethoven. Por otro lado, me estoy dando cuenta de que la scordatura es muy beneficiosa para los violines; pienso que es algo que deberíamos tener más en cuenta cuando tocamos música barroca. Es como si ampliara el repertorio de colores, de matices, de cómo habla, cómo se desarrolla. La scordatura busca nuevas resonancias en el instrumento. Una de las cosas fascinantes de tocar a Biber es justo esa. Hay algunas scordaturas muy estrechas en las que el violín sufre un poco, pero una vez las pasas, luego cambias el violín para tocar otra música y responde maravillosamente. 

–¿Cuántos años lleva en la Schola Cantorum de Basilea?

–Desde 2010.

–Suficiente para hacerse una idea de cuál es el panorama respecto a los jóvenes. Desde fuera se ve muy brillante.

–Me gusta, porque veo que la música antigua sigue muy viva. Las cosas han cambiado bastante desde mis tiempos de estudiante. Cuando empecé bebíamos mucho de los pioneros, Leonhardt, Brüggen, Harnoncourt, Kuijken... Ahora no es que los hayan olvidado, pero les pilla más lejos, y el mundo ha cambiado mucho. Los jóvenes que vienen a la Schola ven el Barroco más como un complemento de una realidad muy amplia. Muchos de ellos a lo mejor no se van a dedicar al 100% al Barroco, pero entienden que les puede ayudar a liberarse, a encontrar nuevos repertorios, a indagar sobre muchas cosas… Yo fue llegar a la Schola y pasar de 0 a 100 en poco tiempo, porque no sabía nada. Ahora, no, porque llegan ya con mucha más información y vienen eligiendo justo lo que quieren y a veces huyendo de la formación más académica, y esto me encanta.

–¿Quizás hay menos especialistas?

–Sigue habiendo chicos que vienen convencidos de querer dedicarse a la música antigua, pero es verdad que mucho menos que antes, que cuando venías a un sitio así era básicamente para dedicarte al barroco. Noto más permeabilidad entre los mundos, el moderno y el barroco, y en el barroco hay gente más completa. Yo por ejemplo estoy dando clases a un joven catalán, y él toca a menudo con un grupo de danza contemporánea, con un grupo de música del siglo XX, y es perfectamente capaz de llevarlo todo. Eso lo tengo muy en cuenta con mis alumnos. Les digo que no deben cerrarse, que hay que estar muy abiertos a todo lo que está pasando y puede pasar en el futuro.

–Hace unas semanas hablé con un discípulo suyo, Vadim Makarenko, y me decía que estudiar con usted le cambió la vida, aunque le ha hecho la competencia con Vivaldi…

–Sí, uy, me encanta, es un disco precioso. Estoy orgullosísima de que haya hecho algo así, y además en el grupo hay varias exalumnas también. Aunque tengo que decir que cuando llega gente con ese talento tampoco es que yo tenga que hacer mucho. Además yo creo que si la Schola ayuda a tantos chicos es por la posibilidad de hacer música en grupo, te da unas posibilidades increíbles para hacer eso, nunca estás solo, aunque te prepares pensando en ser un solista. En las academias de música moderna esto no suele ser tan así. Los estudiantes aprovechan esto en la Schola, porque es un sitio para tocar, tocar y tocar en grupo. Yo estoy para ayudar en caso de problemas, pero siempre les digo que lo que hacemos no son realmente clases, que son intercambios, que me digan qué buscan, qué necesitan por si yo puedo ayudarles… 

–¿Qué proyectos inmediatos tiene para Gli Incogniti?

–Estamos buscando, porque es complicado. Después de dos discos así tan seguidos es como una depresión postparto. Me gustaría seguir con las dos facetas, más barroca y más clásica. Me gusta hacer cosas clásicas porque puedes llamar a más gente para tocar, y me encanta poder dar trabajo. Me gustaría de un lado Haydn, un poco de Mozart, con más vientos, y del otro lado más música francesa y alemana. Estuvimos haciendo últimamente conciertos con ese disco de Sinfonías de Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach que salió en 2021 y es una música excelente. La gente se compra Vivaldi, Bach, Bach, Vivaldi y cuando le dices Carl Philipp no reacciona lo mismo, pero es igual de extraordinario.

Happy Rosa Mundi! Rosa Mundi is our Summer Solstice celebration, and a particularly important holiday as one of the high feasts. Rosa Mundi starts the Mother portion of the year in the filianic calendar and is a time to look within but also have fun. 🌹

absolutely gorgeous prose, and it’s a concept that always makes me tear up a bit—what if tk, owen and carlos actually made it to gwyn’s funeral? i’m pretty sure i read this like five or six times after it was first posted, it’s that gorgeous. this explores grief poignantly and is full of emotion that i love to sink my teeth into.

again i feel like i could rave about the missing moments series for hours—andie’s uniquely and perfectly (imo) captured the essence of these characters and expanded on so many scenes we didn’t get to see play out. this one is no different, an expansion on 2x11 and what it means for carlos to have his parents meet tk and how it sort of opens up all these things about being seen—it’s so so good. tk’s observations about carlos in this too kill me.

i’m so obsessed with this re-imagining of the end of the breakup era, where tk and carlos come back together at nancy’s 126 hang that actually happens. the tension and mutual pain/pining is amazing and this fic perfectly explores both of their povs as they navigate their feelings while being apart, and the conversation they finally have is so perfect i can’t even deal. also them breaking the bed in this when they reunite gets me every time. such a gorgeous read!!

“What can I do?” Carlos speaks so close to his neck that goosebumps can’t help but answer right back to him. TK inhales for a moment too long, and rejoices at the sheer humanity of his body’s response. It feels like a gift. He relishes in that part of him, that side of his soul that he can sense is still fighting. You’re alive, it seems to be telling him. It opposes loss’ rising and greying hue, and reminds him of a life still waiting for him on the other side. Of course Carlos is the one keeping its flame from frazzling out, the one reviving it over and over.

“There’s nothing you can do.” He says, not unkindly. Because there isn’t. And he knows it must be driving Carlos crazy, to not turn his love into action. To be made a witness, when he’s always – always – at the front lines. He knows it must hurt to have nothing to fight against, no way to make anything better. He knows, and he shares the sentiment and the frustration that comes with it. They’re all spectators, even those whose very essence kicks and screams for them to be anything but. Death doesn’t care. It evens the playing field, makes them all useless. “Just hold me.”

And he’s aware he’s the same person who mere seconds ago invited him to leave him there alone, but that – unlike this one – was a lie. He doesn’t want to be alone. He wants the man he loves to squeeze him so tight the ragged pieces now composing his insides are forced to coexist again. He wants to pretend he never shattered at all.
