There's a moment in Psychonauts 2 where Raz calls Lucy his "Nona" and Gristol laughs and mocks him for being confused. At first it just seems like him rubbing salt in the wound over Raz's troubled family life.

But thinking back to it recently, I realized was also some really interesting subtext behind it: it shows how the two characters have a very different view on what "family" means.

Lucy isn't Raz's biological grandmother, but as Mirtala points out at one point, she's the only "Nona" the kids have ever known. She did all the things a grandma would do, and took care of Augustus since he lost Marona. In every single way, she's the grandmother of the family.

Gristol grew up the heir to a royal family. By rite of succession he was to be the next king (Gzar) of Grulovia, and his entire motivation is getting that back. Naturally, titles and lineage are something very important to him. They're what he bases his whole worldview around. His entire brain is a literal propaganda display for monarchy. From the dismal state of his apartment we can tell he lives alone and neither of his parents are around anymore, and he resents his father for how he squandered his inheritance.

Raz has a healthy (albeit dysfunctional) family, and and even though the lines are a little blurry on how everyone fits in together, they all love each other. Gristol on the other hand is all alone, and the only thing that makes his relatives a "family" is that he knows who they all are and what order they go in.

For Raz, a family is a group of people who love each other, but for Gristol, a family is just your lineage. It's actually way more sad for Gristol than Raz. Raz has a "fake" Nona who loves him, and Gristol has a "real" family who are all either dead or hate each other.

Sunderland's Royal Jewel Vault (18/∞) ♛

↬ Countess Wynn's Meander Tiara

The majority of the tiaras in the Sunderlandian collection were inherited through members of King Louis V's family, mainly previous queens Matilda Mary, Anne, and Katherine. This meander tiara however represents the current Wariwcks' French heritage, as it belonged to Queen Irene's mother, Marguerite Wynn. Countess Wynn was born in 1914 as Marguerite Delphine Lucie Chevrier. She was the eldest of four children born to industrialist  Phillipe Édouard Chervrier (1880 - 1950) and his El Salvadoran wife, Consuelo Romana Gomez (1892 - 1979). Margurite's family claims ancestry from both French and Spanish nobility, although the bulk of their impressive fortune was derived from Phillipe's ceramics factory in the south of France. Much of Margurite's early life was disrupted by the First World War, during which the Chevriers settled in Mexico City with Consuelo's sister. Following the war, Marguerite flourished in high Parisian society, becoming well-versed in the arts and fluent in several languages, including English and Spanish. Expected to marry into the French aristocracy, Marguerite made waves by instead marrying John Wynn (1911 - 1973), a career soldier from Sunderland whose great family had fallen on hard times following the deaths of John's three older brothers in the war. When the couple met in 1931, John was on a mindless trek across Europe, in search of a wealthy bride. Despite their differing backgrounds, Marguerite was smitten by John's optimism and good humour. The pair married a year later, with John even converting to Catholicism to appease Marguerite's parents. Their wedding was held at the Chapel of the Palace of Versailles, one of the last grand society affairs of interwar Paris. The tiara, which featured a Greek key design punctuated by a central emerald-cut yellow diamond, was among Marguarite's wedding gifts. The jewel is ambiguous in origin but is agreed to be an early twentieth-century creation, likely from Cartier. It became a useful tool in Margurite's arsenal as she erupted in Sunderland as one of the country's wealthiest society ladies. Pearlie, as she became known, was noted to be arrogant, intelligent, and ravishing. Pearlie is more "royal" than the rest of us combined. She drenches herself in jewels as if she were the ghost of the last Tsarina. — Queen Katherine, 1970

The Countess owned the tiara until 1968, when she gave it to her youngest daughter, Lady Irene, also as a wedding present. Irene's marriage to the future King Louis V was Pearlie's greatest life achievement and she became increasingly boastful. Maman Wynn, as she was called by the press and public, was known to meddle in royal affairs, especially the personal lives of her daughter and son-in-law. By the early 1980s, she was on bad terms with both. Irene was never seen wearing her mother's tiara, but she kept it in her own personal possession for almost thirty years. In 1997, Irene continued the tradition by gifting the tiara to her only daughter, Princess Jacqueline, ahead of her wedding to Lawrence Belmont. The wedding was coincidently the last public appearance of the old Countess Wynn. She died peacefully at Chester Palace the same winter. Since then, Jacqueline has worn the tiara regularly at state functions and in official portraits. It's among the princess's most cherished pieces.

Queen Lucinda Edevane

Pretends my Discord ramblings make any sense and throws one of my OCs at you. LORE dump below:

Sort of a brief preface but imagine my universe is Avatar the Last Airbender if every Nation had an Avatar of Each Element. And there are no non-benders! Everyone can use some degree of said magic. And that they needed all said Avatars to work together to defeat the ultimate Evil Entity, because doing it alone/without Avatar powers have proved to be impossible for centuries. If anyone has played FFX it's very much the same concept of "there is a recurring darkness that we are stuck in a perpetual cycle trying to defeat bc the main characters haven't arrived yet" ---

So there are Avatars of Five Elements for my universe: Lighting/Storm(kinda broad but imagine like,,airbending/lightning bending combined) Water/Ice/Sea (Any liquid tbh) Earth/Nature (stone/earth/leaves/plants), Lunar (magic moonbeams babyyy), Solar (cast fireball) < -- the missing element is Solar, and it's been gone for hundreds of years, never choosing an 'Avatar' (ive been calling them 'Arbiters') and nobody knows where the source of the Element is to try and 'persuade' it to choose another "Host" (Enter Samantha Sinclair, but that's another part of the story)

SO ALL THAT SAID:

HERE is one of my Deuteragonists MOMS. She's part of the LONG line of magic users whose bloodline has always been chosen by the source of Lunar Magic. RE: There's always been a rich royal Lunar Magic 'Arbiter', for generations. It seems to be 'passed down' the line. Maybe they have a whole 'Choosing Ritual' (even tho that's not how the magic works, rich people be silly and privelaged).

So she is in what is the Royal Family of this world. While all the elemental nations have their own leadership, the Lunar Kingdom/Nation/Etc has the most powerful magic/and the family kind of rules everyone because of that. Targaryens vs other Houses ala Game of Thrones.

When she is young, Lucinda (that's her name) <- is SECOND in line to inherit the throne, should her brother (who is the Arbiter of Lunar magic at that time) die. WELL, turns out he does, meaning the Lunar Kingdom loses both it's Arbiter and it's heir in one fell swoop to a bad battle with the Ambiguous Evil Forces I haven't come up with yet.

So OOPS she's suddenly saddled with responsibility she wasn't supposed to have, which is in this world less of a "ok you're queen now go produce a male heir" and more of a "oh you're queen now, and ALSO you better make sure this Arbiter nonsense stays in our bloodline".

So that kinda sucks for her -- her consolation prize is being allowed to marry the captain of her Kingsgaurd (straight bodygaurd AU ooooOOOoo) the only problem is---he's a weak ass magic user. So her family is a little sus that any kids they have would have a chance to be chosen as the next Arbiter. But she INSISTS, it's the one good choice she gets to make for herself bc oops she happens to genuinely love this guy

Anyway their first kid (Elias) ISSSSSSSSSSS --- not chosen. Firstborn, next in line, not the Arbiter. Very embarrassing for everyone involved. So kid number two, one of my deuteragonists, Lucy -- is more of a 'necessity', rather than a 'want' from her parents. And it shows in the strain in their relationship. Lucinda (Mom) (Lucille, 'Lucy' is literally named to echo her ) regrets her own choice to marry for love because she feels like she fucked up - she also resents having to take on that responsibility in the first place, so her attitude toward Lucy (who luckily WAS chosen as the Lunar Arbiter) is very "I fucked up hard so you better not blow this for us ---"

I love Jack's uncertainty upon reading Lucy's memorandum. The vulnerability in his voice as he asks van Helsing what it means, and if Lucy is mad.

Quincey's voice is so soft and sweet when he asks to have a talk with Jack.

Man, Jack really is running around all over the place isn't he.

"I don't want to shove myself in anywhere where I've no right to be;" this is why Quincey has been gone from the book for so long.

Plotting out "Cosmas" (Disney movie)

Make sure to check out my summary of this film and others in my part II post of the fanmade Resurgence Era.

Background

While Disney was going back and forth between doing a mermaid film OR a fairy film, "Boto" was greenlit and Disney realized it didn't need to be an either/or situation, and jumped at a proposal for a Shakespearean-esque fairy film, taking influence from the stories of changelings and the green children of Woolpit. Wanting a winning combination, Byron Howard and Rich Moore were brought aboard to direct the film while Jared Bush wrote the script. While the original intention was to have a female lead, the question of "why can't the main character be male?" popped up, causing enough friction for the protagonist to know be a young man. This ruffled execs feathers a bit, who wanted to make sales with fairy dolls due to their Pixie Hollow franchise being pretty dead, so a major female character was created instead. Disney opted to make this film 2D in order to give it a nostalgic vibe akin to the "Fantasia" franchise and "Sleeping Beauty." The film was originally much more historical and focused equally on the human world and the seelie court, but eventually the figured that the fairy realm was more visually and narratively interesting, so the protagonist's time in the human world is cut significantly, only for the first twenty minutes of the movie. Along with this, historical elements were toned down significantly once the human world was left behind. Enjoying the work they did on "Midnight Masquerade," Disney brings on Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss to do the music, not to mention finding that this seems right up the alley of "Six."

Plot

Once in a while, a baby sleeping in a crib unattended is switched out for a fairy, while the human child is whisked away to the land of the fairies. When an abused young human discovers that he is a changeling, a fairy who took the place of a human, he goes to the land of the fairies to find where he truly belongs. But he finds himself embroiled in scandal, as he is the son of the king and queen of the fairies, not voluntarily given to humans. As the truth begins to reveal itself, he finds that the magic of the Seelie court and the place he used to call home is in more danger than he thought.

Characters

(The images below reflect my inspiration for either the characters' design and/or personality, along with serving as a visual aid to the reader of this post rather than just looking at text.)

Peregrine Boleyn--A young man who's had a life of nothing but trouble, being terrorized by his aggressive father and ignored by his insatiable (not in that way) mother. As such, he grows up as something of a bully, quick to hide his feelings and turning moody when those who he cares about fail to notice him or his accomplishments. If his father wasn't a factor, Peregrine would've given up trying at all. But when he discovers that he's the son of the king and queen of fairies, he's quick to leave his old life behind in favor of embracing his true identity Prince Cosmas. But the way he believes royals act isn't quite the way they behave in the fairy realm, and he doesn't understand the consequences that come with his choice.

Sylphide--An energetic and bubbly guide and sworn protector to Prince Cosmas, she carries a significant amount of guilt for having to leave the young man once believed to be the prince in favor of the actual prince, and is quick to assert her dominance towards the bullying new prince. While often characterized as a sweet, homely fairy, she's tough and firm when she needs to be.

Dane--Once known as Prince Cosmas, he was promptly stripped of his titles and inheritence, given to the human that waltzed in just yesterday. While the king and queen no longer publicly acknowledged him as the prince, they still saw him as their son, but Dane, as he now went by, saw the writing on the wall, how the aloof foreigner had usurped him and everyone who he thought was his friend was nowhere in sight. Along with this, Cosmas' entrance to the Seelie Court was unprecedented, allowing for fae from the Unseelie Court to arrive, influencing Dane and encouraging him to take back what is rightfully his. Interestingly, despite not being related, both he and Dane share similar features, likely the result of Dane being raised by Cosmas' parents.

Songs

Gloriana--The opening storybook number about the mythical Seelie Court, home to the good fairies ruled by King Oberon and Queen Titania, as well as the Unseelie Court, a wicked rival court with no unanimous leader, who sought the destruction and corruption of the Seelie Court's peace as beings of chaos and distortion, and how they terrorized the human world as the Seelie Court entertained humans.

Anybody Else--Peregrine is unwanted by his parents; his parents are social climbers who see their son as an embarrassment, with his father abusing him and his mother ignoring him. As such, Peregrine grows up hiding his feelings, often coming across as moody and self-destructive.

Welcome Home--Sylphide introduces Peregrine to the Seelie Court as she becomes aware of his identity, and the fairies begin to gossip about how he could've been taken from the king and queen without anyone's knowledge, and what that means since the "fake" prince is no longer the heir presumptive and the "true" prince is inexperienced in fairy culture and ill-prepared to lead (though Sylphide brushes this off due to fairies' longevity).

Cast Aside (Second to None)--Dane, now acknowledged as an adopted orphan with no princely title, no power, and no respect, is seduced by the promises of the Unseelie fae, who persuade him to take power from the Seelie Court and unite both courts and rule over them. He agrees, using the magical energy he picked up from being within the realm for years and creating a frost, even trapping some fairies within the flowers they sleep in.

All Mine--As Cosmas flits between dreams and nightmares, he questions his sanity, and if being a fairy was worse than being a human, especially since he had no wings or ethereal appearance like everyone else. The king and queen attempt to assuage his fears

Take Me to the Sky--When Cosmas begins to transform both psychically and emotionally, he asks Sylphide to help him find Dane, who's mistreatment he'd been blind to in order to indulge in his own happiness up to this point. However, despite Cosmas and Sylphide's pleas, Dane refuses to accept their apologies, saying that they, despite their interference with his life, where not the ones who had wronged him so deeply.

In Regards/As Above--Nothing worth gaining is ever easy, and it never comes without sacrifice. Dane has been stripped of his magic and his memories of his life among the fairies, banished to the human world, while Cosmas is celebrated for his triumph. That said, he grieves the loss of a brother he could've had, and even the family he had as a human. But he knows that with every hardship, there is a dawn to awake to, and someday, perhaps even the pain of yesterday will be remedied.

What is Besithia doing in Spark!Ardyn au? Considering his pet projects got thoroughly torched by an annoyed Astral, along with his lab.

Besithia doesn’t strike me as the type to let an Astral throwing a hissy fit get in the way of his goals. Well, not for long, anyways.

Haven’t played through Episode Ardyn yet and it’s been awhile since I watched a walkthrough, but iirc Besithia books it either when the Royal Guard shows up to have a go at killing Ardyn, or when Ifrit wakes up pissed as fuck. Either way, Besithia is too busy running to avoid getting flambéd to see that Ardyn did not get immolated with the rest of the lab.

So with his lab turned to ash and charred and melted scrap - and assuming Ardyn’s ashes are in there as well - Besithia is back to not square one, but like, square two with his daemon experiments. Only now there’s the issue of Ifrit being awake, and that Astral isn’t known for being fond of humans.

And Besithia doubts he’s on the Astral’s Winter Solstice card list.

First Besithia has to fess up to the Emperor about his colossal fuck up - lost an expensive lab, lost the experiments he’d invested so much money in, and there’s now a pissed off Astral on the loose - and hope Iedolas doesn’t decide to cut his losses where Besithia is concerned. Besithia is in luck. Iedolas isn’t pleased with Besithia, but the Emperor gives Besithia a chance to mitigate his mistake by coming up with a way to counter an Astral.

So begin Besithia’s experiments into countering divine magic. With the added difficulty of finding a source of divine magic to test his results on.

Niflheim can already clone food, surely humans can’t be that much more difficult? Ardyn’s genetic samples all burned up in his lab, so Besithia starts with his own dna to perfect the process.

Once he gets that - the successful subjects are placed under observation to monitor development even as they are placed in various homes - Besithia moves on to acquiring a suitable genetic sample from either the line of the Oracles or Lucis Caelums.

Depending how long it takes Besithia to reach this stage, his options are Sylva’s Fleuret parent, Sylva herself, baby Ravus, Mors, or Regis. At which point Besithia starts trying to clone subjects in the hope of them inheriting magic so he can test countering divine magic on them. Instead of having to test it on a fully aware Oracle or a trial by fire on an angry Astral.

Only, it turns out magic doesn’t really play well with cloning attempts so Besithia’s gonna be at this for awhile.

Headcanon that all those puzzles were gifted to Mors by his Shield. Because if he's busy with the puzzles then he's at least not turning his paperwork into origami in a fit of boredom. (It was only marginally helpful)

Also, you posted some stuff about Mors but what about Regis' mother?

That is a wonderful headcanon ^_^

Regis's mother is called Clara Lucis Caelum née Trutina. Her marriage with Mors was an arranged one. A deal made between her father and Mors's mother, who was the ruling monarch before him.

Personally, I headcanon Mors to be asexual and not interested in sex. He was very bitter about having to marry and produce an heir. It soured his relationship with Clara from the beginning. They were never close.

Clara loved Regis, but she was also a conservative noble, so she was never as close with her son as she could have been. She regretted this when Regis got older. He did not pull away from her, but never came too close to begin with.

Regis inherited her eyes. Clara was very tall and willowy with dark brown hair that was cut provocatively short for a noble/royal woman of her time. (It's really the only aspect in which she left behind the conservative mold she cast herself in.)

I think, if she hadn't had to marry Mors, she would have been quite free spirited.

Viktor was the only child of Varsana and Remy LaBeouf, a recently turned toddler who seemed to wake up every morning and choose violence. He delighted in ripping up books when no one was reading to him and took visible pride in farting loudly on anything or anyone in reach. He was energetic, mischievous, and exhausting—and he was loved completely.

Then there was Fish, the family dog, who had adopted the role of tolerant older sibling. He followed Viktor from room to room with a patience that only a good dog could possess.

Rhea’s Aunt Varsana had never once doubted her abilities—magical or otherwise. A seasoned ghost hunter and skilled medium, Varsana had agreed to take Rhea in for the trimester to train her. She planned to pass along not just spells and theory, but also deep knowledge of historical ghost hunters and the importance of relationships with the dead, including sprites and vampires.

Varsana Nebula, second child of Lucy Nebula and third child of Darrel Charm, was part of the Earth generation. A vegetarian who loved the outdoors, she had always been self-assured. As she matured, she’d become even more romantic, cheerful, and—perhaps surprisingly—materialistic. Immortal thanks to a birthday gift from her father (a powerful potion of immortality), she now worked as both a professional DJ and a freelance paranormal investigator.

Her husband, Remy LaBeouf, was an only child raised in Willow Creek by his single mother, Kiki. After her passing, Remy explored his magical roots and uncovered a connection to Dior LaBeouf, a legendary royal seer. A quick learner with kleptomaniac tendencies, Remy was self-assured and deeply romantic—but ever since falling for Varsana, he’d also developed a deathly fear of ghosts.

Varsana and Remy were married on Lunara, the spring equinox and sacred spellcaster holiday. Days before the wedding, Varsana was visited by the deity Lunara, who delivered a dark prophecy: her spouse would one day kill her father, Darrel Charm. 1: Last sentence I wrote: Patience had slept more deeply than she’d done in years, dreaming of a strange collection of images that passed her from the royal ballroom to her childhood to the train, which she had boarded and ridden for what seemed like three days. 2: Fem!Crowley, in the ineffable wives fic I hope to finish and post this weekend. Crowley's taking a holiday in Nevada in the 1880s as a woman after hearing about Calamity Jane. She's also topping.

3: I'm feeling really good about the novella, although it's not hitting me quite as good as the original one (which will be going on sale in two weeks, eeee). The original wrote itself astoundingly quickly, whereas this one's proceeding at a more normal pace that feels slow and halting in comparison. On the other hand, the Wives Wild West WIP was going really well, then got to the sex and smashed to a halt, and is only just picking up again, so I'm a bit frustrated with it.

If we mean ones I haven't started at all or aren't based on earlier things I partly wrote ... fem!Elias/fem!Jon TMA non-con is something that exists solely as the title to an empty doc, as is a second Max/Lucy Fallout fic about them in an established relationship, an OFMD Enchanted AU, and a Steddyhands fic set in my modern f/f 'verse. (A modern f/f AU set in a bdsm con where Ed coaches Stede through caning Izzy is a paragraph-long outline.) I have a full outline for an original m/m fic set in fantasy!1900s!Albany, NY (the lead is rough trade who blackmailed a rich guy that got him sent to prison, so he goes upstate for a job once he's out and meets this cranky little bespectacled twink who turns out to be a celebrated drag queen), also one for a very erotic f/f novel involving adventurers defeating some kind of evil enchantress and being forced to inherit a woman she'd magically enslaved, and also a less erotic one set in the 1880s with an elegant butch who intends to seduce her rich aunt's companion but accidentally catches feelings. I have a concept for a story about a female doctor ca. 1900 and a grumpy reluctant spiritualist medium. And lastly I will mention the Cinderella concept that's the reverse of the novella I've written, where there's a femme princess and Cinderella cross-dresses to get into the ball (so the shoe bit is basically played straight). Sadly, I am a champion at writing outlines and really bad at following through on them.

I would set this in the Deep City verse, actually. Make it a story that Noctis found in the royal archives as a kid, when he was there searching for information about his magic.

And there he found the story of Aurel Lucis Caelum. He was the son of the Conqueror King. He had two younger siblings, Tempestates and Maris, and one cousin named Justus. All four had the potential to inherit. But then Aurel did not manifest magic.

By the age of 13 his father disinherited him from the direct line and he became Aurel Caelum. Later texts would call him the Forgotten Prince.

The text Noctis found is full of holes, brittle and old and written at least 2 generations after it happened as a copy of a copy, so it's hard for him to know what happened, but the story picks up again after Tempestates had been King for a while.

It goes that Justus died from a poisoning, Maris married out of the family, and all of Tempestates's children were born sickly and died early.

There was no one to inherit the throne. No one but the children of Aurel Caelum, who all showed strong magic.

Tempestates was relatively young still, at 39, but was already suffering badly from the stasis sickness that claims every Lucis Caelum king before they reach 60.

So Tempestates reinstated Aurel into the family proper, so one of his children would inherit. The oldest, Cremes, was already 17 at this point. (Aurel 44)

The old text doesn't really mention what happens next other than telling of Tempestates's untimely death at 41 and Cremes's coronation following that.

OKAY SO !! I'm still stewing in that hellhound idea & I did some digging.

There are varying descriptions of what hellhounds do, but the most common is obviously guarding the throne / gates of hell & also guarding the land of the dead. That's when it clicked.

The twins both have a connection with the dead, Luci can see them & Val can hear them, & almost like Cerberus, they have the capability of summoning & guiding the dead to their afterlife ( also like Cerberus & the 3 head thing, they're identical twins which means born from ONE WOMB & bound spirituality rather than physically ). This is where I think this somehow ties their destiny as HELLHOUND FIGURES, & a reason I might envision the twins' more demonic forms would harbor canine - like attributes ( i.e. fangs, the red eyes, claws ) & why there is such a profound FERAL type of rage when their family / friends are threatened in any way. Like almost completely instinctual & almost uncontrollable.

All that said ... I don't think any of this is necessarily known. I know Val & Luci get A LOT through their ' readings ' with the runes & the cards, but they distrust anything trying to lead them to their so - called " DESTINY " due to what had happened the night of the ritual. But that said, I think the reason that night still haunts them is because most of their abilities were " AWAKENED " that night. They're meant to help Hellboy be the destroyer of the world, & I didn't want to go in the direction of the royal trope where the heirs to the throne fight their own father for it, but instead are GUARDIANS of the throne & its King & bring the dead souls to him.

Obviously they don't want ANYTHING to do with this so - called prophesy. They just want normal lives & a normal family ( or as normal as it can get doing what they do ), but I do feel like they eventually learn that it was the Witches that night of the ritual, when they were tricked & lured into the woods, that sort of set that whole thing in motion. Otherwise Luciana might not have gotten any sort of shadow abilities, they both might not have had any clairvoyance or capability to see & hear the dead; the only thing that had been CERTAIN up until then was Valeria's inherited pyrokinesis from Liz.
