Team 5Ds reading headcanons

So started thinking about what type of books certain characters would read, and this ended up extending to the rest of the cast. So here are what I've thought of:

Yusei:

Mostly reads nonfiction, such as engineering textbooks and user manuals

Martha's orphanage had a lot of old children's books that she used to teach the kids how to read, but Yusei outgrew them pretty quickly

Was hard to find good textbooks in the Satellite, so growing up, most of them were long out of date. But they helped him learn how to repair scrapped electronics

Often gravitated towards books written by "Dr. Fudo"

Sometimes reads Duel Runner magazines to stay up to date

Akiza has convinced him to try some mystery novels, but he is stupid good at figuring out the mystery halfway through

Favorite fairy tale is The Tale of Princess Kaguya

Jack:

Reads newspapers and dueling magazines, usually with his morning coffee

Looks for articles about himself or written by Carly first

Is very up to date on politics

Growing up, he was the designated storyteller whenever Martha was busy. Yusei was a better reader, but Jack was better at setting the mood and doing the voices

Favorite fairy tale is Jack and the Beanstalk

Akiza:

Was a lonely kid, so read a lot

Reads a bit of everything, but her favorites are mystery novels, poetry, and fashion magazines -Prefers romance as a side plot rather than the main genre

Convinced the group to watch a movie adaptation of a murder mystery she'd read, then Yusei points out an inaccuracy in the train design and Akiza nearly combusts because he was very close to spoiling the twist that exposes the murderer

Sometimes writes poetry, but always burns the notebook when it's filled

Favorite fairy tale is Beauty and the Beast

Crow:

Canonically learned to read from Duel Monsters cards, Martha made sure he caught up when she adopted him

Reads more to his kids than for himself

Has a library card and uses it purely to get requested books for his kids

Sometimes reads comics and graphic novels, but more for the art than story

If he went to school, he'd be the type of kid that watched the movie to write a book report

Favorite fairy tale is The Ugly Duckling

Luna:

Is a big reader, spent a lot of time in hospitals or on bed rest so picked it up

Main genres are fantasy, fairy tales, and folk tales -Likes anything that involves dragons, fae, or witches the most

Also sometimes reads ecology books; knows a lot of obscure insect facts

Her and Leo have library cards and go once a week

Has gotten in trouble for reading in class

Favorite fairy tale is between Rapunzel and Hansel and Gretel

Leo:

Reads almost exclusively comic books and manga (but would be a Percy Jackson kid if it existed) -Favorites are the Elemental Heroes and Neo Spacian comics

Exchanges comics with Crow a lot

His dad would always give him the comic and puzzle pages in the newspaper

Is really good at solving the crosswords and sudoku puzzles

Has also gotten in trouble for reading during class

Collects cutouts from dueling magazines that he likes best, most are of Jack but has a mini collection of Yusei too

Favorite fairy tale is between Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Hansel and Gretel

Carly:

Used to read a lot as a kid, but has less time for it than she'd like as an adult

Mostly reads news articles and magazines, especially dueling magazines, but that's 50% for work -Looks for anything featuring Jack first

Main genre of choice is romance of any kind

Jack once read one of her romance novels while he was hiding out at her place...he regrets it

Used to write a blog for dueling news in college, but stopped when she started working

Is into bullet journaling

Favorite fairy tale is The Little Mermaid

Misty:

Actually doesn't read much fashion magazines, but studied Fashion History in college and often reads books on that

Her main genre of choice is horror, prefers psychological and gothic horror -Listens to audiobooks on long plane rides

Also reads a lot of cooking and baking books, likes trying out new recipes

Used to be an avid follower of Carly's blog

Very sporadic taste

Favorite fairy tale is Swan Lake, her family used to watch the ballet every Christmas

Kalin:

Is not picky, reads out of boredom so will read literally anything that comes his way -Likes educational books the most

Books in Satellite often got burned for warmth, so not a lot of options available

He would dig through the dump for things to sell as a kid, but books weren't worth much so he'd just keep the intact ones

Read a french language textbook once and now can read in fluent french, but his pronunciation is terrible because he's rarely heard it spoken

Would eventually start a library in Crash Town

Doesn't have a favorite fairy tale (it's Cinderella)

Greiger:

Reads a lot of mythology and folk tales

Started with telling the tales to his younger siblings and younger kids in his village, eventually got interested in the mythology of other cultures as well

Got really interested in Egyptian mythology and Duel Monsters' origins in it

Likes Inca mythology the most (because it's what he grew up on), but couldn't pick a favorite tale if he tried

“She was affectionate in private. Me and our sons are rather affectionate people, though I doubt I seem that way.

She often used to rest against me while we sat, and whenever I returned from a mission, she’d greet me by holding my cheeks in her hand, and kissing me. It always brought my spirits back, even after the roughest of missions.

We cuddled a lot when we slept too, she liked being the little spoon.

As for her expression, I blame her family for that. They weren’t particularly good to her, so I assume she adopted a more stoic and calm expression to deal with it.

Still, she smiled a lot when we spent time together as a family.”

Hit me with your favorite 5Ds headcanons 👀

Okay so I’ve used/alluded to some of these in my fics already, but that’s just because I love them that much (also it was really hard deciding which are my favourite headcanons):

Crow swears the most out of the boys, but has an almost supernatural ability to completely shut his swearing off the second children are around (unless he’s really flustered)

Though I’ve kinda hinted at something like it before, Jack isn’t actually the worst cook at the Poppo Time. Bruno is. Because Jack knows what good food is supposed to taste like (having been a star duellist for a while and all) and can reasonably guess how to approximate those flavours—he just doesn’t cook because he doesn’t have the patience to learn any technique whatsoever (or clean up after himself when he’s done). Meanwhile, Bruno just can’t cook. Straight up. It’s not a matter of wanting or not wanting to, if you try tasking this man with anything more difficult than preparing cup ramen he will burn something. Guaranteed.

Bruno and Yusei don’t have the same mechanical skillset. Bruno is almost 100% specialised only to runners, and at that, he’s slightly better than Yusei. But Yusei’s advantage is that he knows how to fix almost everything else (provided it’s mechanical and/or electronic), too.

All three of the Satellite boys actually know how to sew a bit. Martha taught them how to mend their own clothes. The quality of their seams varies (Crow’s are the neatest because he got a lot of practice from mending his kids’ stuff, too), but they all know how to sew tears shut and mend holes.

Aki isn’t as good a gardener as one would believe with her plant theme. She likes gardening a great deal, but doesn’t have a lot of experience outside of house plants. So she could decently keep a garden alive, but would never be able to maintain something like, say, a bonsai collection or a bed of prize roses, despite her love for the activity.

I’ve written a whole post about this already, but I still adore it, so: Satellite natives, post reunion with the city, are the bane of brand phone store workers’ existence. They want everything fixed, not replaced, and trying to explain to them why that would be too complicated (whether contrived or not) usually results in them not paying a single cent and going something like “oh, forget it, I’ll just give it to the neighbour’s boy, he’ll take care of this”. This includes Yusei, who usually just ends up fixing his own stuff, and especially Crow, who has already nearly gotten in a fistfight with some tech company’s store manager upon hearing the supposed price of a repair/replacement on more than one occasion before. (He obviously just ends up handing his stuff over to Yusei, too, in the end.)

Maybe my favourite headcanon: As TCG fans know, the manga versions of the signer dragons were printed as the duel dragons. In-universe, I imagine the duel dragons were also printed—as commercial, publicly available retrains of the signer dragons, who are supposed to be one of a kind in canon. (I also use this headcanon to justify why the signers have support cards tailored specifically to their dragons—they were printed to go with the duel dragons in-universe, but allow usage with the original signer dragons as well.)

Rua/Leo isn’t actually that bad at school. He’s just not very disciplined when it comes to studying because he’d rather keep polishing up his deck.

Ruka/Luna owns several duel monsters plushies. Her favourite is, of course, her Kuribon plushie.

Carly is really good at clocking people’s vibes and figuring out their character quickly. The caveat is that this only works when she meets them face to face.

eichi grew up an only child, so he always wondered what it would be like to have a sibling. most of his peers spoke very fondly of their siblings that he found himself envious of them. he was used to being alone, but it didn't mean that he didn't wish that things could have been different. having a younger sibling to dote on and spoil sounded very nice... but, that was something he would never experience at this point in his life.

or so, that was what he thought until his relationship with leo started getting serious and he introduced him to his parents and his little sister, ruka.

at first ruka was cautious around him- he could tell that she was silently judging whether or not he was even good for her dear older brother. as time passed, and as eichi proved himself, their relationship started to grow as well.

he finally understood why leo would always dote on his precious little ruka-tan. slowly, she started feeling more comfortable and accepted that he was someone who was going to stick around. she went from calling him 'tenshouin-san' to 'eichi-oniisan.' he loved spoiling her with gifts. he loved watching the siblings work together on songs. it made him feel like he was a part of the family now- something foreign as he never felt a part of his own family.

but now he understood familial love. he understood what he had been missing his entire life and leo helped him achieve that.

Vampire Dormitory Men Bringing Home Their 1st Child

This is just a little cute throw together I think of the guys if they were to have their first kid and what the babies rooms might look like after you get home.

Now don't go expecting this man to want to hold the bundle of joy he is just as terrified at holding his baby as he was getting close to a girl in the first place. So when he looks down and sees he has a little girl he has mixed feelings. Not knowing how to handle her or do much with her so young however when she gets some age on her she will be sitting with her daddy when he is playing otome games.

Poster of his magic girls on the wall along with a whole collection of girly anime dolls, finish it off with a tv and gaming center with all different switch controllers. This all around one side of the room because the baby sharing his game room. Giving him a reason to be in their checking over his little girl while he doesn't grow bored.

Ren Nikaido

Now imagine a small baby boy that looks as cute as the man your with...thats right a beautiful little son...oh my bad his genes are strong you birthed twins a little girl and boy. Now as protective as he is you know no one will be hurting these children and wait til his daughter is old enough to date it will not be a happy day for the guys or him. He is the daddy's girl type his little girl will have him wrapped around her pinky easily however he will teach his boy to grow up taking no shit from anyone. He will love you and your children you have together fiercely.

So Ren is a minimalist if you notice miscellaneous items mean nothing to him he rather have people in his life that matter. However because he loves you and is willing to bend some so that your babies room doesn't look like a prison room he let you put their names on the wall line with pink and blue with a cute rug. The chair is where he spends nights reading from the book case below. He likes to keep toys out of the way and sorted so he has a clean open space to get in and out when he might have to rush in and protect them. He let you talk him into white furniture but all in all he really doesn't he loves you and them.

Could you write something, you’re allowed to choose the format, of Namba going through a zombie apocalypse?

Of course I can! Thank you for sending this in, since I mentioned having a lot of ideas for this that I never thought I'd get the chance to rant about and now I can! I hope you'll all enjoy the ranting!

So, the zombie apocalypse comes to Nanba Prison. There's a couple ways I could see it happening. One way it could go is that a visitor, or even one of the prison staff or guards, could unknowingly have gotten infected on the mainland. Maybe they had a random and bizarre experience with someone already zombified and they blamed the encounter on someone just being high on bath salts. Maybe the food they ate carried the virus needed to create zombies. Whatever way it happened, they unwittingly got exposed to whatever makes people turn into zombies and then, when they did get onto the island, the virus really took hold and they went full zombie and started attacking. While that initial zombie was probably put down and put down relatively quickly, they managed to do some damage and spread the virus to at least a couple more people, who then spread it to a couple more before they could be killed and so on and so forth until it's getting more and more difficult to keep up with putting them out of their misery.

Another way it could happen? It could definitely be an experiment the Otogi's were working on together that went terribly, terribly wrong. I think I prefer the first one a little better, just because in this kind of scenario, the Otogi's would either become some of the first to go zombie or just straight up get killed and that really puts Nanba in a real tight spot as to whether anyone survives because they really need their healers and researchers.

Now, in a way, Nanba is the perfect place for the zombie apocalypse to really break out. It's not only inescapable but it's pretty impenetrable, not only with the high walls and security feature but by the simple fact that it is an island. There's only one way on, one way off really. I think that's something that was banked upon during the first initial outbreak, when things were getting bad but still seemed to be under control. Momo ordered all forms of transportation to the island to cease temporarily but overall, the guards figured their strength and diligence alone could prevent it from spreading.

When things started to spin and the zombies started getting more plentiful in number, too much to easily control and take down, Nanba goes into full lockdown mode. Each building is quarantined, much like how we saw Building 5 during the Enki arc. Travel between different buildings is forbidden and the guards are given the orders. Squash this zombie uprising, protect your prisoners, and prevent any prisoners from trying to escape.

In headquarters, Momoko is in charge, overseeing everything, and really tries to keep a handle on the situation. She plans and oversees this as the commanding chief of an army would and believe me, she puts her army to good use.

Of course, she's only able to do that because Mitsuru is also locked safely in headquarters with her. If it wasn't for Mitsuru's communications and technological skills keeping all the different buildings connected and updates kept coming at hourly intervals, Nanba would likely have fallen completely.

Of course, the Otogi's and KAGU-8 are also within headquarters, commanding their teams in a joint effort operation to figure out what the hell is causing all this, to find a cure for it, and to figure the best way to get that cure out to everyone who might need it.

KAGU-8 actually comes in incredibly useful as well because, as a robot, she is immune to becoming a zombie. She goes out of the building whenever it's deemed safe (as in, she won't let anything in and they know she can't transmit the virus back to them as it's not anything skin to skin contact), acting in a variety of manners. Not only can she give them a better view of the actual situation outside of their building, but she can act as a go-between and aid various buildings in need of support.

Because animals also seem to be completely immune to being turned zombie, Kyakuya, Hiiragi, Tsubaki, Sazanka, and Kikiyou also help KAGU-8 in those kind of roles and they're also a valuable source of intel for Building 4.

And Building 4? It makes itself useful. Not only is Yozakura exceptionally strong and more than capable of taking down a single zombie, but he is a very smart man and knows how to research and investigate. Musashi actually is allowed out of his cell, though he must still be closely supervised every minute, under the orders of the Warden, to help as that is something Musashi excels at as well. Building 4 really dedicates itself to helping Headquarters' research and investigation team as much as they possibly can. Even though Hitoshi isn't really the most skilled at research, they help by taking care of the others, rationing out food while still making sure everyone is fed, and really taking over the supervising of the other guards and the overseeing of the prisoners.

Speaking of food, it becomes clear after the first week or so that travel must be established between the different buildings so that rations and provisions can be shared. Not only that, but after the first building or two fell due to zombies, it became apparent that staff needed to have a way for backup to reach them in case things did start to go bad inside a building.

While Momoko and Hajime will definitely need to have a meeting after this whole thing is over, it's really Building 13's time to shine when it comes to finding ways for the Buildings to safely travel between each other. While Jyugo and the others normally keep their travelling within Building 13, Jyugo has probably snuck around to other buildings without Hajime or the boys noticing, just because he could. And with the inmates of Building 13 really being given a little leniency, and the blueprints to Nanba, it's a walk in the park for them to figure out, test, and secure safe passage between the various buildings. Anyone going between the buildings must be accompanied by a Guard, and honestly Building 13's supervisors and guards have the best reputation and everyone wants them to accompany them. The pure amount of just stupid levels of strength and combat that both Yamato and Hajime have make them more than capable of taking on any zombies that come their way. Seitarou and Tsukumo, meanwhile, actually have really fast reflexes and a kind of stealth that makes them really talented at going safely in between the different buildings and at leading groups between buildings.

Building 3 finds their purpose during the apocalypse in several ways. Not only do Honey and Trois team up but they also team up with Ruka under the supervision of Kiji and start to produce various weapons and battle plans and tactics. Honey often collaborates with Building 4, Uno, and even the Warden herself on one occasion when it comes to tactics and plans. But they also do something else that proves useful as the apocalypse wears on. The communications channel gets turned over to Building 3 once a day, where Kiji or other staff from Building 3 just spread positivity, remind everyone of why they're fighting, assure them that things will return to normal, and remind everyone that they also need to take care of themselves. Shower as often as you can, make sure you get your beauty rest, don't forget good skin-care and little mindfulness breaks, just to keep yourself looking and feeling the best you can. After all, if you look and feel good, you can conquer anything, even a horde of zombies.

Building 5 tends to be the building most everyone counts on to actually go out and put those plans and tactics into action. They're really the front-line soldiers of this battle and not without very good reason. Not only are the guards of Building 5 exceptionally physically and mentally strong, but it's inmates are normally quite physically strong and talented fighters in their own rights. Even Qi gets drafted, becoming a sort of combat medic and he's the one to test the zombie antidote, each time the Research Team thinks they have perfected it, out in the field. Other inmates and guards from different buildings do back them up whenever possible, but they are really the ones in charge down on the ground.

Anyway, headcanons. Some of these are a little sexy and I'm not sorry.

I feel like Jarlaxle and Kimmuriel originally thought they had a mutually beneficial arrangement for sex and cuddling that certainly wasn't based on real feelings oh no.

They were completely wrong about this, but for the longest time both of them thought they were the only one who had caught feelings.

Also Zak coming back from the dead made things Complicated.

(Said arrangement was probably relatively recent, like it started between the Neverwinter quartet and the Companions Codex, and they didn't get shit ironed out until at least post-Generations if not later.)

Kimmuriel (along with the dragon sisters) is one of the few people Jarlaxle trusts enough to sub for and once Kimmuriel got the hang of domming people, he did so magnificently.

All the experience was on Jarlaxle's side. He's been an ethical slut since the tenth century and had seen and done it all and all Kimmuriel's previous experience was whatever was going on between him and Rai'gy (and also possibly being bred by K'yorl to make strong psionicists.)

Jarlaxle is playful enough in bed that sometimes he wants to do sexy role-playing, but Kimmuriel is not at all good at playacting. They muddle through anyway. Sometimes (usually) there's costumes.

Kimmuriel 100% uses telekinesis and other psionics to do some freaky shit in bed.

Jarlaxle canonically gets turned on by scheming and Kimmuriel really enjoys doing murders. Every time they have to plot an assassination together, they end up fucking like bunnies.

What does your muse smell like? // Cherry blossom and ink since Ruka is very talented in calligraphy and practices it as a hobby.

What does your muse's hands feel like? // Ruka's hand are soft and smooth, since her coming from a noble family and not doing handcrafting works

What does your muse usually eat in a day? // Due to her sickness, not very much. But she loves steamed foods (mushimono)

Does your muse have a good singing voice? // Ruka is a very traditional and elegant woman. You would never hear her sing openly. But when Kyojuro was born, she would hum quietly lullabies while making him sleep.

Does your muse have any bad habits or nervous ticks? // Ruka has a weak expression, so it is sometimes a bit hard to read her. There is no particullar bad habit, but when she is extremely nervous she lets out her nervousness by tapping her finger lightly on her thigh as an output.

What does your muse usually look like/wear? // Ruka has defined facial features, such as her sharp nose and long eyebrows. She has large dark red eyes with circular white pupils and a small mouth, with semi-long black hair tied loosely at the end in a ponytail.As a traditional Japanese woman she mainly wears traditional kimonos with light colours and flower patterns.

Is your muse affectionate? How so? // Despite being quite and calm her love language are words of affirmation and quality time, as she loves to listen actively, encourage and appreciate her loved ones and loves to spend time with them.

What position does your muse sleep in? // On her back, not moving. (little own hc: Shinjuro was afraid the first shared nights that she might be dead, as she didn't seemed to breath. Just to realize that she is just very quite.)

Could you hear your muse in the hallway from another room? // No, she is very quite, walking in small steps. Though you can hear the rustling of her kimono walking.

Luna's deck sucks, here's how to fix it

So I've got a lot to say about Ruka/Luna and her role in the story, mostly how I think it could have been better. But I'll start with the first way that the writers fail Luna: her deck.

If you play the TCG, you may already know that Luna is one of the few main cast duelists that never got an archetype associated with her. By this point in the franchise, every character has their own archetype or two associated with them, yet Luna doesn't use any archetype specific cards (unless you count Kuribon). She has a loose fairy forest type theme that is a mix of plants, fairies, and beasts. This isn't too out of the ordinary for characters, Akiza also had no real archetype during the series (just a lot of plant/rose themed cards), but she and most others in that state got some sort of archetype retroactively made around their deck (in Akiza's case, the Rose Dragons). Luna has not received any support.

Luna's ace monster is Ancient Fairy Dragon, who in the series, she had a strong connection to. And despite being the weakest attack wise of the Signer dragons, AFD's effect gave her the strongest counter against the Earthbound Gods in the first arc (which is why she had to get written out for most of it). In fact, this effect would be so strong that AFD would get banned irl for several years until the card got an errata. And possibly because of this, AFD is still the ONLY Signer dragon to never get an upgraded form.

Now let's talk about Luna's duel against Professor Frank. This is Luna's first showing as a duelist especially after being hyped up as a former dueling prodigy. Even with the very loose deck, there is a bit of a strategy there. Luna use Ancient Forest to attempt to lock her opponent out of attacking, then uses life point gain and loss effects to slowly burn her opponent. Eventually the duel ends in a draw with Luna using Oberon's Prank in combo with Kuribon's LP gain effect. And that is the end of the ONLY solo duel Luna gets in the series.

Looking back on this duel after having finally played Yugioh, I had the sudden realization that Oberon's Prank was an anime only card with an awful effect made just so Luna could force a draw. Oberon's Prank is a trap card that makes it so that any LP gain effects used on your opponent are negated, and both players take damage equal to the LP that would have been gained. The closest equivalent to Oberon's Prank irl is Bad Reaction to Simochi, which only inflicts damage to the opponent. Simochi was also used by Luna in the World Championship games and is probably the intended way to use Kuribon's LP gain effect. So the only reason I can think for why they would write the duel in this way would be because they really wanted Luna to tie/lose. In a narrative sense, I get wanting to show that Luna is kind and would rather force a draw than let her opponent get eaten by a dragon. But also, she wasn't going to win the duel at that point, let her run Simochi and get a win. Or make it look like there was a choice in the matter.

(IMO, if the dragon wants to eat the creepy psychologist, soup's on.)

So if I were to fix Luna's deck, the first thing is giving her a Naturia/Vernusylph deck.

Naturia is a Synchro and Fusion focused deck that is composed of Earth attribute monsters with the goal of controlling the opponent's movements. A couple of the Naturia cards would have already been made by the time of 5Ds. Naturia works for Luna for a couple reasons; the control style is a good contrast to Leo's combo focused deck, they're a bunch of cute critters that fit the fairy forest theme Luna was going for, and the archetype's story itself is also related to the Naturia protecting their home forest (as Luna does for the card spirit world).

Their boss monster is also named Leo and I just think that's funny.

Maybe the writers did consider Naturia and decided against it for whatever reasons (didn't want another majority plant player after Akiza, knew Luna would be too much of a menace with Naturia Beast, wanted to save the cards for the Duel Terminal arcade game, etc.).

Supporting the deck further would be the Vernusylph archetype, which are a small archetype of Earth fairy monsters that offer support to other Earth monsters. They're a relatively new archetype so some effects may be a little strong for 5Ds era (especially Vera). But they fit into Naturia well and would have really solidified the fairy forest theme. Also them being Earth support in general means that they can support Powertool Dragon and many of Leo's Morphtronics in tag duels (also a couple of Team 5Ds use Earth monsters so it would make Luna fit well into a lot of tag duels). And despite being a Light attribute, AFD fits into the deck.

And another monster I think would fit would be Circle of the Fairies (also a relatively new card). This one throws off the Earth attribute focus a bit, but offers support for plants and insect types. Also more burn and LP gain effects for Luna. And it and the other Circular monsters keep up the fae theme being based around fairy circles.

That's my opinion on what Luna should play. It's not too late for Luna to get an associated archetype, there's a couple of characters who get different archetypes in later games, like Tea playing Witchcrafter in Duel Links and Blair getting Lightsworn in Tag Force. Or Ishizu who's deck retrains created one of the most powerful decks in history. AFD is also long overdue for an upgrade/support after being off the banlist for a couple years now. And so Konami should make Luna's deck absolutely broken as an apology.
