Forgotten media

Who even remembers these shows?

I mean, I haven't heard anyone bring up WordGirl in years. And the show just died off. That's a shame. I loved this show, and probably why I got into vocabulary when I got older. This show it beautiful. Peak anime material.

Then we have Martha Speaks, one of the most forgotten on here. Which i a big shame because i absolutely LOVED this show. I used to watch it every day literally. I remember almost all of the episodes, go ahead, ask me. Also anime material. Am I going to be the one who makes all these shows anime?

Okay, now Arthur isn't that forgotten but come on? No one talks about it anymore. Ever since it ended. It was very sad when the show was said to end because during my childhood I would watch Arthur every. Single. Day. I've seen every episode, at least from the early 2000s and 90s ones. I went to go watch this show a few weeks ago to give it it's love again, and I still knew exactly what episode had what. Also, Arthur isn't necessarily lost, but no one appreciates the old show. A sad shame. Anime material as well 👍🏽

Did Cyberchase really die off tho? Is the show still going, I forgot. That would be a blessing tho. This show taught me 65% of all the math I know. Very educational + it was funny at the time.

RIP. Maya and Miguel is DEAD. And that's TERRIBLE. I didn't watch this show a lot, but it was still an incredible show. It should've lived long enough to end next to Arthur. Could 100% be an anime. I can imagine it.

Shame these shows kinda died off.

Shame they didn't last longer. Arthur was on the verge of being one of the top three longest running shows in America, and many of these shows were literal anime material.

Plus he knows how to do routine maintenance but also runs a restaurant and knows cooking so well he has written a cookbook. And while he is a robot bird, he is too heavy for his wings to lift his alone, but that is why he also has a propeller tail! And he has a bowtie

Ref for my Cyberchase OC Gale (plus a complete overhaul of her info and backstory).

Gale is Slider's mother and Coop's wife. Her personality is directly opposite of Slider's; He's introverted and quiet while she's extroverted and loud (and doesn't exactly know what an "inside voice" is). She also loves adventuring, and can't go too long without exploring a new site or else she gets antsy.

Whenever Gale went on these little solo adventures (solo because Coop was too busy and Slider was too scared cuz he was only a toddler), she'd never fail to bring something interesting back- one of these was a translucent blue crystal that looked like it had something in the middle. She didn't know what was inside until she found out the hard way.

One day, on her way to another one of her adventures, Gale had forgotten to empty the glove compartment of her cyber pod, and some intense turbulence caused it to come loose and spill all the contents on the floor, including the strange crystal. It broke and some blue dust spilled out. Right as she tried picking up the pieces after switching to autopilot, she felt lightheaded and collapsed. The last things she heard was her heart pounding in her ears. Not only that, but her side bumped the switch to autopilot and turned it back off, causing her ship to lose control and crash land in Castleblanca.

When Gale finally came to, she found herself a few feet from the burning wreckage. Bruised and bloody, she found herself unable to recall a single memory before the crash, and instead felt an overwhelming sense of emptiness in its place. She didn't realize it, but that dust that spilled out of that crystal was blue magnetite, and the effects gave her amnesia so bad that she didn't remember her husband or their son- she didn't even remember she was from Radopolis.

She now works as an eccentric DJ in Castleblanca for their annual Halloween Howl parties. And one day, years later (a year shy of 20), a certain middle aged man ran into her while he was on an emergency medicine run for his son's sick girlfriend. This little meeting would send them both into a spiral of emotions, and Gale had no clue why... not yet at least.

Cyberchase Pilot: Found Some Production Sketches

Hello all,

I was looking around on Worthpoint to see if any odd Cyberchase stuff had sold on eBay in the past. I found a few listings for some pencil sketches. These were apparently used during the production of the pilot. Now, these were Worthpoint listings, so these sold on on eBay while ago. However, the images were archived, and I can share them.

Here, we have Jackie trying to pry open the bars of the Poddleville basement that the Cybersquad was imprisoned in.

Here's a frame from the pilot for comparison.

Here's Inez rummaging through her vest for the protoype Sqwak Pad.

And here's roughly the same shot from the pilot.

Then, we get Matt talking about looking for a pattern in the stolen eggs.

And here's Matt from the pilot. I didn't see a shot with his right hand in a matching pose, so they did re-pose him a bit in the final cut.

And now we have a shot of Jackie looking at the board. Matt, Inez, and the unnamed poddle are just outlines.

I wasn't able to find a match for this frame in either the original pilot or the re-edited version that became Season 1 Episode 7, so this scene was trimmed or re-worked. The closest I got was this, where Jackie is running away from the board to try to escape the basement.

When I originally saw the sketch, I thought the unnamed poddle was standing beside Matt and Inez, but based on the final animation, they are standing on the board's ledge. I suspect that the original sketch depicted Jackie comforting the poddle, and they traded it for this more up-close-and-personal shot.

We still get two pencil sketches of Jackie running away to try to break out of the basement.

Then, we get a pencil sketch of Nezzie using the prototype Sqwak pad.

And here's the final shot.

So, those are all of the sketches from those listings. I'm happy to see that these are preserved. I'm not sure how much production material from the pilot still exists over 25 years later.

A random niche pet peeve you have?

I feel like I'm pretty easy going and then I'm on the train listening to like three people on TikTok at the same time. Incredibly rude, really irritating, 0/10 please turn it off I'm begging you 🥺🙏😡 I don't think that's super niche but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The biggest animal I think I could take in a fight?

Absolutely no idea 😂 I'm kind of thinking size isn't everything? There are probably really vicious little dogs and like piranhas or something that I couldn't take in a fight. I'm not sure if that's a reflection on my fighting skills or the fact that I'm not out here trying to fight animals When I'm running in the park and a big dog gets a little too excited I do tend to square up, so we'll go with that.

What color would you paint your kitchen if you were allowed to paint it any color?

Green! Not sure if I could really carry off a full green kitchen but I love to look at them ☘️🌳💚✅🍀

Flamingo or swan?

I don't have flamingos where I live but there are plenty of pretty but mean swans, so flamingos 🦩

Childhood TV show that had a strong influence on your childhood?

Probably Kim Possible? But I was just talking to my younger sister about this. I used to get up early before school and curl up to watch cartoons by myself at like ~6-7 in the morning. So I watched the PBS cartoons like Cyberchase and Arthur but I also ended up watching some weird ones, like the one I was explaining to my sister that for a moment I was convinced I was making up. I was not making it up. Probably not my first but perhaps my most intense early introduction to Sherlock Holmes was Sherlock Holmes in the 22nd Century. Lestrade's ancestor brings Sherlock Holmes back to life to stop a clone of Moriarty, Watson is a robot, it's wild.

What would I wear to a costume party?

I really want an excuse to dress up kind of regency or pirate-y. I also fantasize about someday putting together an Obi-Wan cosplay. When I'm thrifting, I'm constantly on the hunt for the right pair of cherry leather boots 👢

Something creative I'm working on or thinking on?

Outside of fic, I've been posting about my crochet exploits. Once I finish that bag, I'm returning to my knitting white whale--a Welsh wig from a pattern used in The Terror. It's sort of a silly project that I wanted to try my hand at and learn new skills. I started back in January, had a crisis of faith, got a knitting lesson, and was finally cruising along until the crochet project landed in my lap. I have to return to it before it gets too warm out. I really can't do any kind of knitting or crocheting once it gets to warm out 🥵

Give a piece of advice you think people should know:

I'm still trying to sort this advice out in my own head but I've been thinking a lot about art and creativity and the idea of persistence being a huge factor in creating something great. In a lot of projects, there comes a time when all you can see are the mistakes, when you know that you are never going to create something as good as someone else, when it feels like you should cut your losses and save your breath. I think that a lot of good comes from pushing through that feeling of doubt and uncertainty. I consider myself an amateur at a lot of things (drawing, baking, painting, sewing, to name a few). When I make things with my hands, I tend to see the flaws and I've been trying to look at what I make through someone else's eyes to see the successes that outweigh the failures. Even just the fact that something exists where something didn't before is something of a miracle.

My Italian teacher in high school used to tell us "learning is uncomfortable" and I used to hate her for it. The way she said it when we were struggling always seemed like a cop-out for her failure to find a better way to help us with conjugations or something. But I have come around to the idea that she might have been at least a little bit right. I saw an article recently that talked about perseverance and students learning to write with AI, that the ability to sit with the struggle of learning to write, to push through difficulty in order to find success on the other side is being lost. While I think we have to take a step back from glorifying suffering and burn out, I do think that there is something to be said for sticking with something you know is worthwhile even when it is hard. Learning to judge for yourself what is worthwhile and what isn't and being brave enough to see the good in the results waiting for you on the other side is advice I try to keep in mind.

Cyberchase Retcons: The Northern Frontier

A word of advice: Don't look too deep into the worldbuilding of Cyberchase. When a show has been running for 22 years, there are going to be retcons. The lore has been whatever the writers have needed it to be for a long time.

So anyways I'm going to look too deep into the worldbuilding of Cyberchase.

The show's pivot into environmental science has led to some of interesting retcons. One of which is the layout of the Northern Frontier.

I believe the first time we see it outside of Hacker's Hangar is in "The Flying Parallinis," where we see Mount Wayupthere.

A few episodes later we get to see the kids explore the Northern Frontier in "On the Line." It's pretty much what you'd expect to see from Hacker's home.

We have a creepy desert

And we get a bird's eye view

It's very obvious that the Northern Frontier is a bleak, creepy wasteland. Even when later seasons sent the kids back there, the new locations they added mostly fit the same aesthetic.

"Blowin in the Wind" gives us these spots

They're not quite as barren-looking as the season five episode's locations, but they still look like they fit. They were at least putting effort into making sure the Northern Frontier was cohesive.

And then "Hacker Hugs a Tree" happens. We've gone for 11 seasons with the Northern Frontier being a barren wasteland. As I mentioned at the start, the pivot towards environmental science led to retcons. Here's one of them

A bleak, barren wasteland. Oh, and also the Cyber Redwoods apparently.

Yeah, 1/3 of the site is now a lush forest. This episode is fun because the characters actually point out the retcons. Matt says he didn't think there was anything on the Northern Frontier just before the picture is shown.

Later we get to hear Hacker talk about his backstory, where he arrives alone and seeks comfort in the trees. Digit then say "I don't buy it."

Now according to the "How it all started" comics, Digit arrived on the Northern Frontier with Hacker. The show never confirms this, but Digit definitely worked with Hacker at one point. In this episode, Hacker does take Buzz and Delete to the forest with him. So we can assume that Hacker would have taken Digit with him at some point too, right? So why doesn't Digit believe Hacker's story here? Something's not right.

The writers knew they were doing a massive retcon with this episode. They wouldn't have had Matt be surprised by the trees if they didn't. Digit is pointing out the fact that this episode does not align with the backstory he and Hacker are supposed to have.

I dunno, it's just funny to me that they take the time to point out the retcons here. They don't do it in "Watts of Halloween Trouble" a season prior. I know they add more locations to the Northern Frontier in at least one other episode, but I personally haven't seen it yet.

Maybe another time I'll go into how Hacker's backstory is a mess when you look at it. And maybe how the show's timeline is a mess(We've had four whole Halloween episodes).

I just wanted to ramble about this one little worldbuilding thing for a bit.
