Harry Potter TV Series Thoughts
Harry Potter is one of my favorite all time book series. They still line my shelf to this day. The movies that came out were great representations of those books for many reasons. Now Max, a revamp of HBO Max has decided to go forward with a new 10 year commitment to a Harry Potter TV series.
For many reasons, this has me skeptical. The movies eliminated most of what was filler and streamlined the story so that many people who may not have read the books could easily follow the story. That and the cast was damn near perfect. The trio will never be topped. Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson are these characters for so many reasons. There have been some fairly dumb arguments online about why this series is necessary. Emma Watson ended up too pretty being one of them. That is not even a valid conversation, and it seems unfair to Emma over the years of growing up on screen. That is the pressure that led to the trio debating on leaving the series altogether.
Tumblr media
I can't even imagine the pressure this generation will put on the new cast, especially with Twitter as a new way to fly off the handle when we don't like something. Basically, all that can be added back in is filler and scenes that don't really progress the plot forward at all. If they do all of the filler, there will be about 3 to 4 episodes that deal with each books main plot, and the rest of the episodes will be filled with the meaningless stuff that happens in between.
People claiming this will allow for better character development over the course of 10 years are fooling themselves. The trio had plenty of growth throughout the films, and you don't need 70 hours of television to get a good pace with solid characterization. The stuff that was left on the cutting room floor was done so for a reason.
The biggest issue this series is bringing to the table is giving JK Rowling another 10 years of relevancy and a platform to speak. She absolutely unequivocally does not deserve this after the comments she has made about trans people. She is problematic, and those who are turning a blind eye no longer have the right to then call out other problematic people. If you are choosing to watch the Harry Potter series knowing she is involved, you can no longer throw shade and use problematic stars as a reason to avoid other franchises. Don't twist this. You are free to watch Harry Potter. Just stop throwing shade at others for watching whatever they want to as well.
Tumblr media
There are a lot of issues I foresee with this series. The film's casting department was phenomenal, and it is doubtful they can do such a great job again. Some of these actors have passed away now, and their roles in those films are truly held in high regard. I, for one, can't see anyone else as Severus Snape other than Alan Rickman. It does not work for me.
Sometimes, in Hollywood and in business, you need to realize when Greed has just taken over. This is one of those instances. Harry Potter is a rich IP filled with untapped potential for original stories. Choosing to reboot the 7 books we have already seen done before seems like a choice based on pure financial greed, and I can't be convinced otherwise.

I recently started reading "Harry Potter and the Boiling Isles" on AO3 and this story has a disgustingly tight grip on me. I know that the author made some designs for the characters already but I felt like I should just share what I had in mind when I first started reading. Especially since the whole entire document became CORRUPTED somehow and now none of the unrendered color versions and sketches are all lost and can never be recovered, which hurt my soul much more than I expected it to.
I first started designing it and put a stupid amount of worry into whether Harry should have a jacket or not in Season 1, which is currently taking place. I'll get into why I'm divided between the jacket/no jacket look later but Ron was particularly hard. I couldn't decide if I should go the book/description loyal route or Rupert Grint inspired route because, honestly, I never read the books so I will always imagine Ron as the average height guy that Rupert Grin has encompassed for the kid. I decided to just go with what inspired me more, which isn't so book accurate but was more fun to draw. And drawing it in the Owl House style was an interesting exercise in learning line weight and simplification of design. Though I'm pretty sure these would still need further simplifying, specifically for the belts and collar textures.
Mild spoilers and speculations for later in the story, I guess?
I'm sure that it's not much of a spoiler as it is implied that Ron will be studying abomination magic and that Harry and Lilith will reconcile at some point, so I made my post-show future designs reflect that. If Luz is 18 when the epilogue takes place, Harry and Ron would be like 15 or something so they would be like fourth or fifth years. Harry is wearing Lilith's grudgby jacket--like how Luz wears Eda's--and continues attending Hogwarts (don't ask me how with the whole Wizarding War situation, just let me be happy) and Ron decided to stay in the Boiling Isles to apprentice under Alador or Darius, even if it might seem a bit out of character. But, eh, Weasley's are ambitious folk and to become the first Weasley to master Abomination magic as a human would totally outdo all his other siblings at the dinner table and parties.
Tumblr media
I mentioned being torn on taking away Harry's jacket in his season 1 design because I imagine Lilith would come clean about being Harry's mom at some point during or before Season 2, which is where I would imagine Harry would end up wearing her grugby jacket. And I wanted it to feel significantly different from his season 1 design because him wearing it would be a MAJOR development in the story and his relationship with Lilith. I also added more to Lilith's jacket because it felt a little bare compared to Eda's, but I will post that later when I redraw the designs.
I had a season 2 lineup cleaned up and colored too but I never saved it out so that version is lost forever where Ron wore some edgy ripped vest with abomination goo or whatever but I haven't finalized his design because it's always come as an afterthought and the kid deserves better than that.
Anyways, I imagine that by the end of the series, if the author is kind, there will be not much more physical scarring on the poor children after all their inevitable trauma. Harry will get a palisman at some point, which I headcannon to be a peryton (a winged deer with antlers) that he names Prongs (I dunno how he gets the name, I dunno if he knows his dad's nickname yet). Prongs came from the Forest of the Forgotten who used to belong to a jerkass grudgby player who threw them out after one of their wings broke off, which the flyer found unacceptable because it would "affect their speed". Prongs became attracted to Harry's passion for Quidditch and missed competing in a sport, so they bonded with Harry through that. I decided that Ron's will be a capricorn, because I imagine the ram would be a good representation of how stubborn he is but the tail end would sorta represent his almost contradictory flexibility under pressure. I haven't finalized the design and am still on the edge of changing it because drawing a capricorn is SO FUCKING HARD, so the little palisman is not present in the lineup.
None of this should be taken as actual spoilers for the story as I am literally making fanart of a fanfiction, so none of this is author approved.
But if they end up liking it, I would not mind them working with these ideas which would be a huge honor.

How much Harry missed Ron in the Goblet of Fire.
Re-reading the Goblet of Fire, I found so many instances that showed that Harry missed Ron terribly. He did hesitate to talk to Ron but we can all agree that Harry was miserable without his Wheezy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Maybe if you just let go of your ego, you’d talk to him, Harry... but you’ll know.
Tumblr media
Harry’s more interested in Ron than Hermione’s fact-checking. 😉
Tumblr media
Harry couldn’t just resist, he couldn’t.
Tumblr media
C’mon, Harry. You too didn’t have the stomach to talk to him.
Tumblr media
Would just take a minute to hit him and talk to him, you know...
Tumblr media
Since when did Ron believe in Rita Skeeter?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The ultimate proof for Rarry shippers that Rarry exists. My favourite BROTP <3
Tumblr media
Still thinking ‘bout Ron, eh?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Look at these beautiful boyysss!!! 🥺
Tumblr media
He doesn’t really care about Karkaroff’s grading, all he could see was his Wheezy.
I was so in love with them and they became my favourite ship in the fandom. But the movies downplayed their relationship so badly. Which ultimately resulted in...
Tumblr media
And...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Thanks, you-know-who-is-responsible. You made Ron worse, that’s what we just need. Not to mention you wasted a talented kid’s potential.

Honestly, it’s kinda indicative of the HP fandom that, for the longest time, people were more upset about Hermione’s dress being pink in the films than about Ron having 99% of his best moments removed.

Y'all know which this page this is from but I have to defend him even though there is not much to say here .
Ron stans doesn't actually excuse him for abandoning Harry and Hermione. But what they are trying to say is that they understand where he is coming from. He has deep rooted self esteem issues while it doesn't excuse his actions it makes them understandable. And Hermione was never shown in a bad light by anyone atleast not that I have seen. No Ron wasn't possessed by the locket but he had just lost tons of blood (which wasn't healed properly cause Hermione isn't a medi witch nor should she have to be because she was fucking 17) they didn't have proper food and he along with the others were malnutritioned. I have never ever heard any Ron stan say it was the locket all along cause we know it isn't but he came back and helped them that's what's more important. We accept what he did was wrong no Ron stan whatsoever has ever said that what he did was the right thing to do

Now tell me this scene that Martin Scorsese filmed back in 1980 isn't the Rons reaction we all pictured in our heads when Hermione was tortured🤔.

You're making it snow. by viria13
There is something so incredibly beautiful about the “Ron, you’re making it snow” moment in the books/movies. There is no incantation. This incredibly magical boy is just making it snow with the complexity of his feelings. I mean… is there any other example of elemental magic by one of the students? That moment is so special to me because it shows that Ron’s magic isn’t about technique or precision. It’s all heart and energy and nature. “Emotional range of a teaspoon” my arse.

I cant believe how much I love Romione. Like, I'm in love with them.
They purely love each other and take care of each other. They fight (like normal human do ALL THE TIME) and it's alright because that doesn't mean that they are a bad couple: it means that they are a realistic couple.
In my life I could have ever imagined that I would love two fictional characters -and their relationship-that much. And I'm ready to fight whoever thinks this couple isn't perfect because THERE IS NO PERFECT COUPLE.
And for me, they are the most perfect imperfection in the world.

*steps up to podium*
*Ahem* With JKR’s fall from grace and the fandom’s near collective motion to claim Harry Potter as our own, I hereby decree that all matters concerning Ron Weasley is henceforth to be handled by the Ron Weasley Defense Squad. As such, our word on Ron Weasley is law and no we do not take constructive criticism. Ron Weasley will also be transferred into our custody where he will receive the love and admiration he deserves.
Thank you.

When fucking game!Emmione has 100x more satisfying body language in the Ron&Hermione kiss than Emma does in the movie. OMG.
(I sometimes think about how different and probably way more satisfying the kiss would’ve looked if someone who isn’t Yates, had directed DH. Like can you imagine Alfonso Cuarón take on it?)

We all remember this infuriating scene, right?
Tumblr media
Where, in the ending of the Half Blood Prince, Harry and Hermione share a moment while Ron is just in the background. Hermione also gets Ron's line too. But what I noticed was this.
Tumblr media
So Ron gets up and goes to stand near them. But still, he stands a few feet apart from them and doesn't speak a word too. It's a bit OOC for him, isn't it?
So what's the big deal about this?
Okay, I just re-watched this scene and remembered that Rupert Grint was having swine flu while filming this.
Could it have been this?
1. Maybe Rupert's voice was not alright because his primary symptom was sore throat (throat infection messes with your voice and it might sound hoarse - but it may vary for some) and he couldn't get to speak his line.
2. He was still sick and sat in the background, stood a distance apart from Daniel and Emma (hats off to him).
But, anyways, my intuitions may be wrong but it's a bit believable. Still, the filmmakers could have done something about it, I dunno, filmed the scene after he got alright? Or filmed scenes that don't include Ron or something. I'm no filmmaker but at least Ron should get some importance because that scene was one of the most important to him, proving his loyalty. Obviously, who's going to care when Hermione protects Harry in the movies.

Can you give me a list of all the scenes where Ron was screwed up in the last five movies big time. I'm writing a very very humongous answer on Quora about him on how much he was destroyed in the films. Please guide me. :).
POA
Change in Crooshanks/Scabber argument to make Ron seem like the immature one
‘If you want to kill Harry’ line given to Hermione
Ron’s worry about Sirius about regaining consciousness changed to the two Hs laughing at Ron’s confusion
GOF
Ron and Harry’s falling out changed to be largely Ron’s fault
Harry and Ron’s reunion changed to make Ron appear thick-headed and slow
Ron and Hermione rowing after the Yule Ball changed to Ron leaving Hermione crying on the stairs
Ron willing to let Harry stun him to help him practice for the third task changed to Ron falling asleep in the library before the second task
The script implying Ron doesn’t usually write Hermione letters
OOTP
Ron’s prefect status removed
Ron’s Quidditch role removed
Ron noticing Harry’s scars on his hand changed to Hermione noticing Harry’s scars
Ron getting the better of Hermione in multiple practice duels changed to Ron being big-headed and then getting stunned by Hermione in a practice duel
Ron discussing Harry’s worry over Sirius changed to only Hermione noticing Harry get the vision
Ron getting hexed whilst protecting Luna and Ginny from death-eaters is removed entirely
HBP
Ron taking Potions because he got a decent grade changed to Ron taking it because McGonagall makes him tag along with Harry
Ron having clear reasons for dating Lavender changed to Ron dating Lavender despite having no falling out with Hermione
Ron’s Quidditch role changed to basically scene-dressing (also, in the film, he was the only player who wore a helmet despite being in less physical danger)
Ron mourning Dumbledore changed to being pretty much the only main cast member not getting a close-up during the ‘raise your wands’ scene
Ron and Hermione giving a show of support to Harry at the end changed to just Hermione showing support while Ron sits silently several feet away
DH
Ron encouraging Harry to give Mad-Eye his hair changed to Hermione forcibly ripping the hair from Harry’s head without his consent
Ron’s worry about the Cattermoles changed to... I actually think this was deleted entirely?
Ron’s reasons for leaving the camping trip changed to be about romantic jealousy
Harry saying the ‘she’s like a sister’ speech changed to ‘one down’. Also, the lack of the hug.
Ron easing the tension before Hermione reads the ‘three brothers’ story changed to Hermione glaring at Ron for trying to lighten the mood.
Ron screaming Hermione’s name at Malfoy Manor changed to just some mild shouting. Also, in the film he doesn’t run towards Hermione as a chandelior crashes down on her, and pulls her out of the rubble.
Ron lightening the mood after Gringotts changed to just the trio talking
Hermione kissing Ron after he mentions house elfs changed to them kissing for no reason in the chamber of secrets.
Ron lightening the mood after the battle changed to him not saying anything while Hermione holds his and Harry’s hands.
Ron’s many lines in the epilogue (which showed that he had finally overcome his insecurities) changed to him barely having any lines and being positioned (both physically and metophorically) further from Harry than Hermione was. Also, the film had him with a massive belly for some reason.
Hope that helps, anon!
