My favorite Starscream shots from the movie!

This is where he looks like he’s gonna be a good guy but curveballs into declaring that the strong should be leading. As a Starscream redemption fan I’m a little disappointed but ALSO I find it hilarious and on brand

ASKING HIM TO HIT HARDER?? TFO Starscream is peak feral Starscream and I love it. Getting defeated and continuing to egg him on. I’ve noticed a trend that Megatron tends to hold Starscream by the neck when they fight. Especially when it’s serious. With the detail of Megatron being the one to crush Starscream’s throat in this continuity, imagine if that was the case in other continuities. Megs doing the same (probably traumatic) move in order to intimidate him? That’s some delicious angst right there.

Not included: Shockwave trying to intervene, Soundwave going “nah I wanna see who wins”

Aww. He’s just a little guy and it’s his birthday. He’s a little birthday boy. Don’t hurt him.

Kinda wish he was more of a threat, but I also love his energy here so I can’t complain. Picks a fight he can’t win, escalates when he’s losing, gets defeated. Go girl give us nothing

I found the detail that it was Megs crushing his throat that gave him the signature squeaky voice both funny and sad. Love how his first instinct is to threaten violence here. Disrespectfully disagree with how quickly he stopped talking after Sentimeter turned away though. Starscream would NEVER shut up when someone makes fun of him. He’d yap so hard. The essence of Starscream is stubborn refusal.

Hell, he’d bite Sentinel’s hand right that instant.

I enjoy this scene because it looks like they’re just chill now, like he’s with Elita and Bee. Especially since every time I look at it I think Bee’s arm is Starscream’s. Wanna draw that.

Well, now it looks like it's time for some major Kinger sadness since Gooseworx said this episode was supposed to focus on Kinger. ;_; ;_; ;_;

Either that pillow fort is a trap set up by one of the ghosts or we're going to learn its significance/why Kinger hid himself in one in the pilot; I could believe it possibly be because Kinger was once in an asylum, so the pillow fort wouldn't be a bad representation of a padded room. O_O

Something about Zhu Bajie screaming at the Destined One, "You don't have to bear his name!" before the final fight against Wukong's shell. And right before the confrontation, he desperately tries to follow the Destined One to help him because he's, "just a kid"... Ough, it's really killing me.

Because we really don't know anything about the Destined One. Perhaps he truly only exists to fulfill his purpose of reincarnating into his "true" former identity, being Wukong. Even then, I am doubtful he is unfeeling. He's literally described as "mischievous" in the first few minutes of the game by the elder monkey because he turned into a peach purely to fuck around.

There are remnants of Wukong in him— but he's not Wukong. These characters hold out hope that he will reinvent the name to mean something better; a name carrying legends re-emerging, released of the weight of past mistakes.

"You don't have to bear his name!" Is touching, and horrifying. A mortal born anew must fight his way through to gain immortality in a completely new and unprecedented way— by reviving the dead and by shaping himself into that dead identity. Is he a replacement? Is he Wukong? Is he the Destined One? It's such an interesting crisis.

And Zhu Bajie's singular line is able to communicate this all. It's a very good line. I love it a lot. What does it mean to bear an immortal's name? What does it mean for Game Science to finally make a breakthrough in the gaming industry, not only as itself but as a Chinese game company retelling the most legendary Chinese myth?

Wukong is constantly being revived through new shows, literature, movies, and games. An immortal character shifting through the times changing with our society's values— yet we're always destined to see him once again no matter what. What a legendary story! We always make that choice: to bear his name.

One of the biggest reasons I feel like Beetlejuice 3 is needed is that Beetlejuice Beetlejuice felt (to me) like there was no payoff. I'd have to rewatch, but I feel that the only aspects in which Lydia's and Astrid's lives improved comparing the start of the movie to the end, is that Lydia is freed from Rory and Astrid got to see her dad again, all of which was only achieved thanks to Betelgeuse's intervention.

Lydia was not happy at the end of the film, in contrast to the end of the first movie where we see her happy living with the ghosts of the Maitlands (in addition to her actual dad and stepmom). If anything, even though Rory is gone, Lydia is perhaps lonlier and more unhappy than at the start of the film, after the death of Delia and her father Charles. Rory might have been toxic but whatever idea or feeling of support she had from him is now gone too. We don't know if Astrid will still be attending the boarding school or not, so if Lydia truly quit making her show, then she is also more alone than she was at the beginning.

Betelgeuse also did not get rewarded after spending the entire movie working hard to sort of prove himself to Lydia and show her his love was genuine (despite the few scenes where he truly scared and disturbed her [the Beetlebaby for example... ew], but even though I don't excuse him, I also understand that these dark aspects of BJ's personality just come with the package, with him being what he is, it's something he can't help). In the end he was dismissed despite keeping his part of the agreement, as I'm sure he expected he was going to be, based on the song choice and, what many fans have pointed out, how he didn't do anything to stop Lydia from saying his name and sending him away.

What I'm getting at is that, in the end, the movie left a feeling of there being no payoff, even though technically "the good guys won". When there's no payoff, the story feels incomplete and/or empty in the end. At least we had that scene at the end to confirm that Betelgeuse is not truly gone, which left the door open to the possibility of a third and final part to this series. So even though I do like an open ending, in this case it just feels like this movie just set the stage for a continuation.

Maybe not everyone would agree, but it truly feels that with what this movie set up, the ultimate payoff would be for Lydia and Betelgeuse to finally get married and complete each other's stories. I wish the next movie will focus on Lydia, so that her choosing him feels organic and entirely her own choice.

Transformers One spoilers, some observations about flora

This post contains SPOILERS for the movie! I highly suggest watching the movie before reading this.

So I read a great Tumblr post, that I unfortunately can't find anymore, that looked at the trailers and pointed out that the organic plants on Cybertron look . . . kinda wrong. More like an infection than plants living in symbiotic harmony with a mechanical planet. So today on my third watch of the movie (*sweats*) I paid closer attention to the flora.

When our gang first get to the surface, there's a montage of them traveling across Cybertron, and there's actually no plant life at all in those scenes.

When they first see plants, they are confused about what they are. One of them (I think it was Elita or Bee) points them out and Orion uncertainly describes them as "weird not-metal nature stuff."

The movie's novelization describes the robot deer grazing on plants but I didn't catch that; when energon flows across the planet we see the deer eagerly running to it. So perhaps they are capable of digesting plants, but it's not their preference.

The plant life appears to be thickest at the cave where the Primes fell. Vines cover their corpses like spiderwebs. Alpha Trion, when he revives, is partially coated in moss. There are other plants in and around the cave, generally looking prickly and unpleasant. (One in particular reminds me of both a Piranha Plant and of the shape of the gangplank of the Quintesson mothership--like a toothy maw.)

Anyway, aside from the cave, here's where I noticed plants:

the ruin of a Cybertronian city is covered in vegetation

lots of vegetation as the gang flees while trying to transform. (This is right outside the cave.)

they hide in vegetation as they observe the Quintessons

Starscream's base, which is inside a ruined (possibly Quintesson?) ship has a lot of scraggly moss.

Basically, on Cybertron organic plants mark places of calamity, invasion, and decay.

The Quintessons themselves are very organic looking, so my guess is they are the source of the vegetation. They don't seem to actively be growing it or terraforming, though. My impression is they only value Cybertron as a planet to exploit for resources, rather than a place to live.

IMO the vegetation isn't purposeful, it is a byproduct of their presence, just as a trail of slime is the byproduct of a slug. Perhaps spores pour off the Quintessons' organic-looking ships.

Pickle would probably be pretty surprised at first. His last moments were being chased by some evil Mephone before deletion. And didn't exactly expect a hug from Taco when he came back.
