I'm not a big fan of TOTK and think its story is outright beyond saving but I do think that people's critiques of it tend to be really nitpicky and more importantly that people really tend to ignore BOTW's flaws while critiquing TOTK. Most of TOTK's flaws, specifically in regards to its story, are flaws BOTW also had. TOTK is simply more aggressive about it.

Zelda being sidelined with a thin narrative excuse? BOTW did that too, TOTK is just more obvious about it. Imperialism? BOTW did that too, TOTK is just more obvious about it. Zelda's arc being unsatisfying? Her arc in BOTW can be summed up as 'Zelda couldn't awaken her powers until she could', it's really not much better. Underdeveloping Rauru and Sonia? The Champions were underdeveloped in BOTW as well. I can keep going for a while.

TOTK's narrative problems are more glaring for a variety of reasons, but most of its problems are ones BOTW shares, and it does bother me when ppl nitpick TOTK to all hell and back while putting BOTW on a pedestal. Like let's be fair here, BOTW's story also sucks.

i genuinely hope phil (and also dan) are okay health-wise and im glad they've really used their break to recover !! they've been on tours a lot so im sure they know how to properly rest by now, but viruses, esp covid are evil shits and with food poisoning and whatever else they had to suffer through, i hope they dont have to deal with it again.

apparently it says that rauru DID have kids, multiple even, which yeah... is kinda necessary for zelda to even be connected to them so much so that sonia can SENSE a blood connection (which, even with all the excuses with magic, is just a little too far for me to suspend my disbelief bc its over, OVER, ten thousand years worth of generations that seperate her from them that one lil touch of the hand can sense that (feels more like an attempt to make you care about them or .. see them as zeldas "better" parents just bc they exchange a few nice words, i never got the feeling they were 'better' parents and its also kinda disrespectful to her actual parents, like sure rhoam wasnt the best but i wouldnt call rauru better just bc he was polite)- i could see maybe the light power of hylia or sth but since its the coolest dude that ever lived rauru now that had it which still doesnt make sense and makes me unreasonably annoyed and she can sense BOTH of their powers in her? nah) the fact theres NOTHING about them in the game itself is just so ... no way they planned any of this

are making it up alla 'fix it in post' mentality trying to hastily explain stuff the game never bothers to do to try and appease fans or let it appear as if they thought about it at all

something went really REALLY wrong during development, which kinda seems likely given how the game turned out (im sorry i cannot let go, its not just the writing, the game design too and how little was changed in the map while being so damn expensive, i dont know how people dont feel scammed q_q)

given that they (allegedly) spent the last entire year of development on polish (where??? where????? huh??? like it would make it more understandable (EXCEPT for the price) if there was alot of trouble, which was also bc it got delayed and ... turned out like this, but they dont want to say it, especially given their reputation, with that quote i have heard way too many times 'a delayed game blah blah') i just??

are they just gonna go and do it like they did with kashiwa (kass)? "they uuuh where flying around the whole time ony cool sonau tech maschines, you just dont see or hear from them ooooorrr they were uuuuh out of the country at the time" (sending invitations to other continents to join their glorious kingdom ;) )

(bet they are also gonna say they did all the stuff like ... moving the shrines around (lol?) and lifting the islands up into the sky- which is still weird bc ... didnt they also say they were living in the sky before coming to the surface?? so where?? did they park all their islands on the surface and the mystery kids had the keys so they had to repark them back into the sky after they returned off camera?? xD also why are the islands so different as an environment if they where from the surface? like even the STONE up there is different- and if they were first in the sky then on the surface and the nback in the sky .. why is there not a single yellow tree or grass in the past- you cant really argue that it changed bc they were up there so long bc .. nothing else changed, the suddendly and totally always there sonau buildings are largely in prime condition, only some slightly moldy, and what we see of the glorious past looks barely any different from the present, aside from like ... some standard trees shuffled, no castle yet and that glowy uwu filter DESPITE that stupidly long time frame between it)

Exploring more highschool/college era charmacden. This became so long I'm thinking about making it my first ao3 post 👀 many possible fic ideas here tbh.

Mac mustve had a transformation around senior year of high school. He was the rat, then the weed dealer, then his dad went to jail when he was 17. I think it's after Luther is sent away does Mac become so devout.

At that time Dennis and Charlie drift a bit away from him, more Dennis than Charlie. Charlie knows his own hardships and he wants to be there for Mac, but it's hard to connect when Mac keeps deflecting vulnerability with "righteousness". Dennis rolls his eyes and acts like he has better people to be around (he doesn't. His other friends tolerate him but they don't like him like Charlie and Mac do). It's this time period where Dennis is getting ready for College and Mac is on a religious journey that Charlie and Dennis really begin to connect.

Suddenly Mac is busy every Sunday (and some Wednesdays) so Charlie starts going over to the Reynolds' house. Though Dennis desperately tries to keep Dee locked in her room when his friends come over, Charlie peeks through her door to see her writing in her diary. He sits down and talks to her and makes her laugh.

Mac is unimaginably hurt that Charlie and Dennis and Luther are all leaving his life at the same time, too self-absorbed to see he's pushed his friends away. This makes him pray even harder, more frequently. God will never abandon him like everyone else. So close to the end of high school and not a lick of emotional maturity between any of them means Dennis and Dee go to college with a lot of unresolved tension in the gang. Mac is angry at the world and tries to fill the hole in his heart by sleeping with women.

During a winter break Dennis goes over to Charlie's house to catch up when he sees mac for the first time since high school, and it's clear he's changed. Mac's hair is longer, his jaw set in a scowl, what used to be a faint shitty mustache is now a shitty goatee. He has tattoos on his biceps and Dennis is trying not to stare indignantly at the shamrock on his thigh (I mean really, a shamrock? How lame. gaudy.) Things are weird between Mac and Dennis so Charlie has to hang out with them separately. 

Dennis returns to Penn and is still thinking about Mac. Goes to a house party to clear his mind. Drinks way too much. Blows his first guy. Maybe he does it a few more times "just to be sure" he isn't gay. Gets caught with the wrong guy and is mercilessly bullied. I chug dick Dennis Reynolds. He drops out and doesn't tell a soul why, just says he didn't feel it was the right path for him. Reconnects with Mac and Charlie and keeps up the playboy persona. Feels trapped in his own webbing of lies. Buys the bar with Mac and Charlie and says it'll be a great way to talk to girls. Paddy's first big success is as a gay bar.

Dennis Reynolds your closet is full of skeletons and if you don't come out you will become one of them.

This entire book I’ve been trying to figure out Violet’s second signet (I was leaning towards thinking it was fire; and the “first flame” Andarna had was actually connected to Violet’s powers; and stemmed from when she had none to protect her or Violet protect her with in threshing, and was the explanation of the spicy scene smoke (just mistaken for lightning) though it wouldn’t be a huge difference in the two… or some sort of intinnsic because we don’t fully get the Xaden & double-dragon bond) but the dreams and “dream-walkers” being a thing just totally blew my mind!!! So, I’m gonna go scream in dragon fangirl now… man these are gonna be fun to re-read!
