Today I learned that apparently there's a travelling pokemon fossil exhibit in Japan thatll set up at local museums with like life size statues of some of the fossil pokemon and don't get me wrong I would love to see it. But fucking
Tumblr media
Do we see this are we looking at this, apparently we're claiming that aurorus has bone sails
So immediately I had to look into it like damn maybe they are? They like move though so I looked into it and
Tumblr media
Well now wait just one minute ok so not only are they skin, which ok I figured as much, but also the fossil you use to resurrect this bitch is an impression fossil so already I'm like wait they don't even have any DNA from this bitch (which you wouldn't from the vast majority from fossils just anyway including almost all bone fossils too but I feel like I can justify pokemon resurrection magic more when you have the bone fossil) how on earth did they manage to resurrect a whole dinosaur from an impression fossil
But back to my previous point all I'm saying is that the skeleton they've got in this showcase is the equivalent to one of these

📒- For a secret journal/diary they keep (Bonus: Share an entry from it!)
My... journal? This blog is the closest I have to a proper journal, but I suppose I could share a recent passage from my notebook, which I use to help me sort my thoughts
Amaura
A beautiful fossil that shines in rainbows of color, restored into a Pokémon with sails of the Aurora Borealis. What shall I name him?
I was thinking about Borealis as an inspiration, which it seems originally referred to the north wind... the word used in the original language was boreas, perhaps this could be his name?
I will have to ponder further on this...

🦴This Fossil Friday, sail into the weekend with Edaphosaurus, a sail-backed herbivore that lived some 280 million years ago during the Permian Period. While Edaphosaurus may resemble a big lizard, it wasn’t a reptile: It’s actually more closely related to mammals! The key feature that tells us about this relationship? The synapsid openings behind each of Edaphosaurus’ eye sockets—a trait found in all mammals but absent in reptiles. This archival photo is from the Museum’s collections!

The Technology We Have Already
Tumblr media
Today I want to talk about one Solarpunk-thingie, that kinda annoys me - and has to do with a lot with how real-life politians deal with talking about technology and especially energy technologies.
And this is the following fact:
We already have the technology! This is not some SciFi shit!
See, the issue within the politics tends to be, that a lot of folks go: "Oh, yeah, we would LOVE to go renewable. But right it is not possible! Once the technology gets there, we will totally go 100% renewable!"
And basically a lot of Solarpunks online are also waiting for the technology to get there. Again, there is sadly a big group of folks who technically love the aesthetics of Solarpunk and also generally the idea of a Solarpunk future, but do not engage with it over it. And they usually will also wait for technology to get there.
But it already is.
Let me talk about it.
We can produce enough renewable energy
In a way I get it. If you are not working in any fields related to this - and do not follow science news - you might just not know how fast the renewable energy field is moving right now. 10 years ago, yes, a lot of countries would have been able to go 100% renewable, but not all. It depended basically on the climate and environment. Partly because the photovoltaic (what most people call solar, but us engineers use solar for something a bit different) cells were just not as efficient in certain climates. And while the mix of wind and hydro power could do A LOT for many countries, it could not for all.
However, that was mainly before China really pulled all the stops for their research. No, it is not only China, but holy shit, China's research in terms of photovoltaic is insane. If you follow this, you basically will see a new breakthrough - often from China - every couple months. And by now, the efficiency of photovoltaic is insane. Sure, it might not make sense as the only source of energy in places were you basically do not get any sunlight for half the year, but outside of that? It is so darn good.
Other than that, we are really darn good with wind energy (which to my opinion is still the best way of producing energy) and hydro energy.
Don't get me wrong: We can totally improve those things further and further. But we can absolutely power the world on renewables right now. We do not need fossile fuels right now!
We can build climate-friendly transport!
I will remind y'all once more: Electric cars are definitely better than gas powered cars, for those people and situations in which cars are needed. (Read: For emergency services, certain forms of service work who need to transport stuff outside of the rail network, and probably also some people who live very isolated for certain reasons.) However, they are still cars and suck for this reason, if you do not REALLY need them.
Still, we are fucking good by now in building electric cars and for those scenarios where they are needed. Heck, by now in my city pretty much all public transport runs electric, including the busses. And no, they are not tram busses.
And yeah, turns out, we figured out how to build railways more than 200 years ago, and we figured out how to electricize them in 1881. Yes. 1881. 18 in the front. Almost 150 years ago. Sure, back then we were not that good with it, but we managed to build one for intracity transport that worked - and worked for long.
Yes, admittedly, there are some forms of transport that right now we might indeed need fossil fuels for. Right now, we have no method to fly planes and helicopters in a way that is both mass-producable and renewable. And the same is with transcontinental transport via the ocean.
Yeah, sure. We can technically just go fully low tech and just sail. That works. Heck, while it is about half as quick as modern ways to transport over the ocean, it is feasible. However, we just cannot move the amounts of cargo we might need to move with sailing. There are people figuring this out (partly through creating much better sails that work for MUCH BIGGER ships) but yeah, we are not there yet.
Still, a) a lot of the intercontinental stuff we technically do not need to transport (most of it is using cheap quasi-slave labor to save money), and b) that should not stop us from just doing sustainable on-land transport which we can do.
We also know how to build a better society
Now, a lot of the folks going for the Solarpunk aesthetics rather than philosophy are quite often very mistrustful of both anarchism and communism - or heck, just socialism. They often have drunken the capitalist cool-aid of capitalism being the "only system that works". But here is the thing: It doesn't.
Sure, there are versions of capitalism that would work a whole lot better than the Chicago-flavored one, but it will never really work - especially in regards to saving the environment. I talked about that a lot before.
But here is the thing. We know how it works better. We know how to build a better society. We know how to make economics work better. We know how to make better schools. We know how to build better cities. We know how to prevent at least a lot of wars. We know how to make society safer for kids. We know how to make healthier families. We know how to make medicine as a system work better. We know it all.
Heck, we have known how to make schools that are better in every way since the early 20th century - so more than a hundred years. This proposed school system since has been proofen time and time again in studies to be better for kids, and better in terms of education. But do we use them? No.
Again, politicians love to go: "We would love to change things, but we do not have a better system." But it is not true. We know how to do it better.
Same with the police and prison and stuff. We know how to do it better.
But right now, a) a lot of the stuff works in the favor of those who hold most power (aka the billionaires), b) a lot of people just do not like the idea of changing stuff majorly (which makes politicians who want change unpopular), and c) politicians also would need to fund the change - and that is going to be hard.
So, yeah. Change would be hard.
But it is not because we do not know how to do better.
And I really just wish people would stop propagating this idea that we do not know better. We do. But folks right now profit from things staying the same. And it sucks.

dogfighting 101 - 01: let's make it interesting
wc: 1.3k
synopsis: harvard is a good friend (and petty on your behalf)
main masterlist
athena-verse master post
a/n: hi friends! hope you're all doing well, have some more top gun maverick athena plot.
Tumblr media
You got lucky on the first pairing.
“Athena! Harvard and Yale! You're up!”
“Let's go boys, we got a fossil to take down,” you smirk.
Harvard rolls his eyes, throwing an arm over your shoulder, and quietly to you he whispers, “that fossil raised you.”
“Exactly why I get to say it,” you tease, leaning into your friend for a moment.
Harvard shakes his head and pulls you out on to the tarmac. You pause briefly, looking out as Payback and Fanboy pass by, tapping at your shoulders, wishing you luck. Your eyes focus on Bradley though, doing push ups as Hondo counts them. You know the tarmac is blazing, you can feel it through your gear, you can imagine having to do push-ups right now would be miserable. You can even see the strain on his face.
“You remember the rules?” Yale asks as he catches up to the two of you, but you know both of the men caught where your gaze was focused. Harvard’s arm is still tight around your shoulders, and he gives you a squeeze.
“I remember, do you?” you ask, swallowing your thoughts and turning back to the pair.
“Well there was this pilot at Top Gun with us, she gave us so much shit, but hand to God if she isn't the best pilot I’ve ever flown with. She had these rules up in the air, how to focus in, what we leave on the ground, she drilled them into us, really. But, she made us better aviators, hands down,” he teases and you shake your head, happy that these two were your partners for the first go. Brigham turns you with a smile, pushing you toward your jet.
“I think you give me too much credit, Logan,” you muse as you stop beside your jet, grabbing a hold of the ladder.
“Not possible. Show ‘em what this nepo-baby’s made of,” Harvard negates with a teasing tone, tapping your shoulders.
“Yes, sir,” you muse rolling your eyes before climbing up into your jet.
You spot Harvard and Yale as they walk past Rooster. You see the tap Harvard does, stopping Yale, and you watch as he pulls his phone out. The two stopping to snap a photo, undoubtedly teasing him in the process. Yale shakes his head as they walk, and as if feeling your gaze, Harvard turns back meeting your eyes. You know he can see your frown, but all he does is tap at his chest and point at you.
FLASHBACK: TOP GUN
“Why haven’t you emailed him back?”
Brigham’s question catches you off guard, you’d been sat in the Naval Aviator’s lounge at Top Gun. Your laptop open as you switched between Bradley’s most recent email, and a text chain you had running with Amelia about going sailing on your day off over the weekend.
”What?” you ask, turning to look at Brigham.
You liked Brigham, and Logan. They were a good team, and smart aviators. Talented and clever, its makes sense why they got invited to Top Gun. They were also the only two of your class that you actually enjoyed spending time with. They were the only two who didn’t make nepotism jokes as soon as someone realized you were a legacy, that your old man was a Top Gun graduate. They were a solid team, solid aviators, and solid people, you were quickly starting to consider them friends.
”You’ve had that email open on and off the last few days,” he notes casually as he sits down across you.
”You’re a snoop, Lennox,” you deflect with a flat look.
”Guilty, I got two older sisters, snooping was a part of the job, and you make for an easy target, Mitchell,” he shrugs in response. “But it doesn’t answer my question.”
”Not that it’s any of your business, but I never email him back,” you admit honestly.
”Bradshaw, I recognize the name, he’s an aviator too, came through Top Gun last year? Or was it the year before?”
”Yeah something like that, goes by Rooster,” you confirm.
”So what’s the story?” Harvard’s pokes.
”Doesn’t matter,” you shrug off.
”Oh, I get it,” he decides smirking, leaning back as your eyes narrow. “Hook up gone wrong.”
You choke on that, an incredulous look taking over your features. “Ew, no! God,” you scoff.
”Then what?” there’s a challenging smirk still on his lips and you decide that making friends might have been overrated.
”We grew up together. Something happened when he was 18, set him back, made him mad. He blames my dad,” you nutshell.
”So he blames you too?”
“He did. Said some fucked shit, and I decided distance was for the best.”
“That bad?”
“I was raised by a naval aviator for a dad, Harvard. I spent deployments in the PACFLEET Commander’s home. And in every other moment until what happened, I spent with Brad and his mom. What he said, it wasn’t something he gets to walk back by trying to email me life updates,” you bite back, venom in your voice.
Harvard’s hands go up in a second, surrender, he mimes. Your shoulders drop and you look at the roof before taking a breath. “Sorry,” you apologize. “I… I try not to be mad, it was a long time ago.”
“Respectfully, I’ve only known you since we got here, but, if you’re still mad, if it still hurts, then I think it’s justified,” Harvard offers.
“Like I said, it was a long time ago,” you repeat, shaking your head.
“Maybe, but you don’t seem like one to hold grudges, Athena. Whatever he did and said, and you don’t have to tell me, it’s enough for me to know that I don’t think I like him very much.”
You smile softly despite yourself. Just a little quirk of the lip from the blind support you’re being offered. It was so different than the ‘maybe you should reach out’ and ‘hasn’t it been long enough?’ that Sarah, Ice, and Viper would drop, and it’s not their fault you never told them what Bradley said, but you weren’t ready for that, not truly. Brigham in one conversation, had reaffirmed your belief, had brought a comfort that you never realized you needed.
“Thanks, Brig, really,” you say softly.
“Anytime, Athena. You practically kept Yale and I from being booted day one, what ever you need, we got your back, girl, always,” he promises.
You nod softly, willing yourself not to get emotional from the support.
“C’mon, Yale was looking for you earlier, I think he want’s to try that taco place we passed by on the way to the beach the other day,” Harvard offers, effectively ending the previous conversation.
He stands, gently shutting your laptop with a pointed look before offering a hand to pull you up.
You take it gratefully, and pause once you’re on your feet, pressing a sweet kiss to his cheek, “you’re a very good friend, Brigham Lennox, and I am very grateful,” you tell him.
“Let’s go, we gotta get out of here for a bit,” he says dismissively, cheeks pinking slightly.
You nod, and walk in front, he follows after you, handing your laptop back with a smile.
...
You’re brought back from the past as your name is called, giving you the 'all clear' to start take-off protocols. You take a breath and remember the rule, leave it on the ground, a clear head for clear skies and soon enough the three of you were in the sky over the training range.

Benggwigwishingasuchus: The Fisher Crocodile
I once again come bearing news from the realm of Pseudosuchia. Yes, we got a new taxon. Benggwigwishingasuchus eremicarminis ("Fisherman Croc's desert song") is a new basal member of the poposauroidea, a clade you might have heard about before.
But first some more key notes. Benggwigwishingasuchus has been recovered from the Anisian Fossil Hill Member of the Favret Formation, located in the US State of Nevada. It is known from a decently complete skeleton that preserves much of the neck and torso, a decent chunk of the limbs but only small pieces of the skull.
Left: Press release artwork of Benggwigwishingasuchus looking across the Panthalassan Ocean (Jorge A. Gonzalez) Right: Fossil material
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As said already, Benggwigwishingasuchus is considered a member of the poposauroidea, one of the most enigmatic groups of early pseudosuchians. The reason for that is that we primarily know them from their most derived members, the bipedal Poposaurus, the sail-backed ctenosauriscids, Lotosaurus, the ornithomimosaur-mimics of the Shuvosauridae and Qianosuchus. As you can see many appear kind of like proto-dinosaurs and most have lost their osteoderm armor, requiring a whole different skeletal structure to support their erect posture. But until recent years we knew little and less about where they came from. This is thankfully starting to change now, since we now not only have Benggwigwishingasuchus, but also Schultzsuchus (formerly "Prestosuchus" loricatus) described earlier this year, Mambawakale from two years ago and recently assigned to the group as well as Mandasuchus (similar to Mambawakale originally described as something else and recently considered as a basal poposauroid). Thanks to these we are slowly starting to see a transition. Schultzsuchus still has pretty standard armour for example, but Qianosuchus shows clear signs of reduction, with Benggwigwishingasuchus kinda falling into the middle between them.
Assorted Poposauroids: clockwise from top right: Poposaurus (Skye McDavid), Arizonasaurus (Gabriel Ugueto), Lotosaurus (Gabriel Ugueto), Shuvosaurus (Joschua Knüppe)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
What's also interesting about Benggwigwishingasuchus is its ecology, or what little we can infer based on the circumstances of its preseration. You see, the Favret Formation preserves marine sediments and was previously best known for its ichthyosaurs (including the giant Cymbospondylus). So its kind of weird seeing a rather lanky pseudosuchian there. What's weirder still is the fact that the preservation seems to suggest that it wasn't swept out. No, its still reasonably complete, partially articulated and in the classic death pose with its back bent backwards, this thing was moved little before being burried. BUT. It wasn't marine. The skeleton fits of a terrestrial animal and both limb proportions and histology show no evidence of it being a swimmer or diver. Instead its hypothesized that it might have been an animal that inhabited the coast, possibly drawing sustenance from the sea but not actively adapted to forage in it. In this sense Benggwigwishingasuchus could parallel Ticinosuchus from Switzerland and Qianosuchus from China, both of which were coastal animals yet not explicitly aquatic (in the case of Qianosuchus it was originally proposed given its specialised tail, but recent work seems to suggest it was never very fast nor enduring).
Top image: Benggwigwishingasuchus standing on the skull of Cymbospondylus (Joschua Knüppe) Bottom left: Ticinosuchus among a group of Tanystropheus (Zach Robinson) Bottom right: Qianosuchus holding a fish (Gabriel Ugueto)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
All in all, Benggwigwishingasuchus is an interesting animal that does fill in some gaps in the fossil record, both phylogentically and ecologically and though the description is sparce on actually describing the skeleton, here's hoping that more research will come out eventually. Hell, they dropped a histology on it like a day after it was named.

Suchomimus, meaning "crocodile mimic," was a spinosaurid dinosaur that lived during the Early Cretaceous period, approximately 125 to 112 million years ago. Its name reflects its crocodile-like skull, which was long and shallow, ideal for catching fish. Discovered in Niger, Africa, by paleontologist Paul Sereno and his team in 1997, the dinosaur's remains were found in the Elrhaz Formation, a region known for its rich fossil deposits. Suchomimus was a large theropod, measuring between 9.5 and 11 meters (31–36 feet) in length and weighing up to 3.8 metric tons. Its forelimbs were robust, equipped with giant claws, and it had a low dorsal sail along its back formed by elongated neural spines.
This dinosaur's diet primarily consisted of fish, supported by its specialized teeth and jaw structure. It likely inhabited fluvial environments, such as floodplains, alongside other dinosaurs, pterosaurs, and aquatic creatures like bony fishes and turtles. Some paleontologists suggest that Suchomimus might be an African species of the European spinosaurid Baryonyx, or even a junior synonym of Cristatusaurus lapparenti, though these classifications remain debated. Its discovery has provided valuable insights into the diversity and adaptations of spinosaurid dinosaurs.
Suchomimus' anatomy suggests it was well-suited for a semi-aquatic lifestyle, wading in shallow waters to hunt prey. Its powerful arms and claws may have been used to catch fish or other small animals. The discovery of Suchomimus has highlighted the evolutionary link between dinosaurs and modern reptiles, showcasing how certain species adapted to specific ecological niches. This fascinating creature continues to be a subject of study, shedding light on the complex ecosystems of the Early Cretaceous.

Hello Thea! First of all I would like to tell you that I love your work, I have been following you for a while and I find this blog super informative. Could you write about fossils Amaura and Aurorus? They are one of my favorite lines, I think they are beautiful.
I agree, they are gorgeous!
Amaura and Aurorus have very unique sense organs relative to other Fossil Pokémon. They are incredibly well-equipped to navigate freezing, dark areas. For starters, their large, pale eyes allow them to detect changes in light in near-total darkness. Furthermore, their flexible sails contain a vast network of chemo- and magneto-receptors, essentially allowing them to get a 3-dimensional sense of both smell and the Earth's magnetic fields. This, combined with their ability to generate extreme temperatures, is also what permits them to manipulate aurora as the phenomenon is an expression of various chemical molecules interacting with our magnetic fields.
