I am usually one for bolder patterns, but how cute are those itty bitty tiny medaka (Japanese rice fish)! They are depicted as seen from above a pond/rice paddy - the thin silvery stripes must glitter so nicely irl.
A lovely antique kimono perfect for proclaiming how eager you are for the rice harvest season soon to come!

Really unusual name today! 御魚谷 is read Onaya, but when I typed out おなや, this didn't even come up as a suggestion—this person would have to manually add it to their dictionary to even type their own name. No wonder they've included pronunciation on the nameplate!
御, in its most common usage, can be read o or go and is the honorific prefix that you often see written in hiragana (e.g. sushi becomes お寿司 o-sushi) . 御 can also be read on, mi, or gyo, and its other meanings include manipulate and govern.
魚, as we reviewed the other day for shark, means fish. It's read uo, sakana, zakana, or gyo. I'm just noticing now that it shares the 灬 fire radical with other animals like 鳥 bird and 熊 bear... and now that I sit down and think about it, with 馬 horse too........ See, this is why I wish my early Japanese classes had focused more on radicals!
And finally 谷, read tani or koku, means valley. There’s also the verb 極まる・谷まる kiwamaru, which means to reach a limit/extreme, to be stuck, to be in a dilemma/at a loss, or to be decided.

I gotta remember to post about my favorite animation on here sometime (not one that I made, just the one I go back to the most to watch)
If you wanna look it uo before I do though, it's DIE IN THE SEA by sakana uo sakana (they changed their username to bakui something i dont recall immediately but you should be able to find it like that)
The animation itself just means like. A LOT to me because it was actually THE animation that pushed me back into making things myself. It's not a completely smooth animation, and its wiggly on purpose, so back when it got released and I saw it I was like dude... I can just... NOT make smooth animations? And have them look really good still?? 😳😳😳 and legit just watching it and studying it opened my third fucking eye
Also such a big inspo that this person made a whole ass music video with their ocs AND a song THEY composed to boot like... wow. Idk its just flooring to me

I'm sure other people are asking, but is the 'daughter' in the flashback gendered? AND IS FISH CANON?
it is, yeah, the word used is 娘/musume which is ‘daughter,’ although it’s worth noting that the guy seems to be just guessing and yamato doesn’t react to it either way. more importantly (and hilariously)- YEAH HAHAHA. or, probably, at least.
Tumblr media
big mom refers to a ウオウオの実/uo-uo no mi, with uo being an alternate word/reading for ‘fish.’ (the word used is usually sakana, but devil fruits are always two japanese syllables, so oda used uo here instead).
i think a good number of people following me will probably already know this, but for those who don’t: there’s a japanese myth involving a koi that successfully swims up a massive waterfall and becomes a dragon as a reward. (magikarp’s evolution to gyarados is inspired by the same story.) so it is definitely plausible that kaidou’s devil fruit started out as a koi and somehow evolved.

[Ryûgû no sasoi - Invitation to the Dragon's Palace] modern summer kimono by Furifu, inspired by undersea princess Otohime from Japanese folktale Urashima Tarō.
This design is a modern take on the “muso” technique, a see-through tailoring using fine sha silk to unveil a pattern painted on a lining. Here Furifu uses a sheer black layer over a lining depicting colorful shells and sea-life arrangements.
The bottom hem is interesting, as Furifu stresses they used fringes as to mimic algae swaying in currents:

So, this is interesting. The most common word in Modern Japanese for “fish” - both in the sense of the living animal and as a food, is sakana. So, I happened to look up the etymology, and according to Wiktionary:
Cognate with 肴 (sakana, “side dish of meat or vegetables usually served with alcoholic beverages”), itself a compound of Old Japanese-derived elements 酒 (saka, unbound apophonic form of sake2, “alcoholic beverage, especially sake”) +‎ 肴, 菜, 魚 (na, “generic term for a side dish, especially vegetables, fish or other meat”).
So, it basically originally meant a generic side dish before becoming specifically fish, and then came to be applied to the living creature too, largely displacing the original word for fish uo (in turn from Old Japanese uwo)
Although, complicating matters, apparently na itself could also be used to mean “fish” in Old Japanese. It’s not clear whether “fish” or “side dish” is the older meaning in that case
