Hey Bitches! I work in a call center. The phone reps secure sales opportunities, which they send to me so I can route them to the appropriate sales reps within our clients' companies and schedule them. I'm responsible for at least a third of our client base. Last month, my pay was upped to $15 an hour, and right after that, rumors started going around that new hires were making that as a starting wage. I started on the phones 3 years ago at $11.50, and I got 3 raises before being promoted. My brother thinks I should meet with HR and ask for the total of my raises (3.50/hr) to be added on top of my current wage, so I'd be making $18.50/hr. I want it. BADLY. But I'm worried they might not decide I'm worth it and start putting together a paper trail so they can let me go, especially since some I recently made some scheduling errors on one of the programs I work with. My brother says I'm too valuable for them NOT to do it. Should I do this now or wait until some time has passed after my mistakes? I'm so sorry for the novel, but what is the best way to approach this?
This is such a good question, cupcake! And you're right to be thinking strategically.
It is rarely a winning strategy to say "but it's not fair!" when it comes to salary negotiations. They're simply not thinking in those terms.
Instead, approach them with a raise request based on YOU, not the new employees. Don't even mention what they're paid. Instead, talk about your tenure (you've been around for quite some time!), how valuable your work is, all the things you do to earn the company money. You deserve to be compensated fairly for your work, but "fair" in the eyes of your bosses means "you are profitable enough that we can share some of that profit with you."

Tom Dundon, Owner and Governor of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that Eric Tulsky has been hired as the 10th general manager in franchise history. After spending four seasons as an assistant general manager, Tulsky was previously named interim general manager on May 24. "Eric is ready for this opportunity,” said Dundon. “He has a proven history of managing people and overseeing operations both outside of hockey and over the last decade with the Hurricanes. His dedication, work ethic and attention to detail make him the ideal candidate to become our next general manager. Everything we do here is collaborative, and Eric will work closely with Darren Yorke, Rod Brind’Amour and our leadership team to continue building a championship-caliber hockey club.” Tulsky has spent 10 seasons with the Hurricanes, originally joining the organization as a consultant in 2014, then becoming a hockey analyst in 2015. He was named manager of hockey analytics in 2017, before being promoted to vice president of hockey management and strategy in 2018. Since being named assistant general manager in 2020, Tulsky has been involved in all player personnel decisions, overseen pro scouting and the team’s hockey information department, and assisted with player contract negotiations, salary cap compliance, and other hockey-related matters. Now that I think about it, it's kinda baffling that Armando had Betty negotiate with the banks, especially when they couldn't pay on time and he was too stressed to deal with it, use her influence with the Bank of Montreal to get loans, pretty much seal business deals and get companies to agree to monthly payments plans beforehand, all he had to was show up and get the supplier to sign the contract (even suppliers expected her to be at the business meals sometimes) and pretty much handle all the finances, make sure debts, interests and salaries were getting paid, and on top of all, expected her to handle and grow Terramoda on her own. I remember Mario and him were quite upset at first to find out that Nicolás (and don Hermes) was involved and most likely knew everything. I mean she is incredibly qualified and capable, but only human and was already working many hours a day in Ecomoda and earning much less than Patricia 🥴. It's also very telling that she didn't need an assistant once she was the president. No wonder lawyer Santamaria was impressed and I think respected all the work she (and Nicolás) had done even if the rest of the board seemingly despised her.
Also, the fact that Mario was able to walk away scot-free is beyond me. He is the one that got in touch with the fabric's suppliers in Panamá that turned out to be smugglers. Granted, it was Armando who decided to proceed in spite of Betty's warnings that it was dangerous and risky. But this disaster is what pushed Armando to have Terramoda seize Ecomoda, but Mario never once felt guilty. He never accepted any responsability neither for the business mess nor for the damage inflicted on Betty. His defense always consisted on reminding Armando that he only proposed things, but he willingly went along with everything. Played on his emotions and hurt his ego constantly by asking him if was really that dumb and easy to manipulate. Honestly, he is one fascinating character.

You’re completely right! I always wondered what exactly Armando would do during working hours since Betty basically handled everything! It really pissed me off when Armando and Mario doubted her intentions when they found out that Nicolas and Don Hermes were involved with Terramoda. Like how can you doubt her intentions when she’s putting 100% of her effort to keep the company afloat when it’s not even her responsibility! They seriously didn’t see Betty as a human😾 For someone who was afraid of losing their company, it’s wild how Armando didn’t develop new strategies to bring money in. I’m still salty on how they would brush off Betty’s idea on the franchise thing.
That’s just how amazing Betty is!! In my head, during the Embargo, Betty already had the function of president while Armando was the assistant it’s just the titles we’re switched 🤭 Santamaría was definitely a fan of Betty and Nicolas🤣
Ahhh!!! Seriously I have no idea how Mario left scot-free! I hated how the junta directiva would continue with him while they pushed Armando aside. They were both involved with Ecomoda’s ruin yet they never even said anything to Mario. I know disregarding Armando makes sense cause at the end of the day he’s one of the owners but wouldn’t you expect to fire Mario or something? Or at least demote him in some way? I hate how his only defense is that he only suggested ideas to Armando because it’s true! That’s all he did! At the end of the day it was mainly Armando’s fault for being swayed by his words. Like how you said, Mario is a fascinating character! He’s such a bad influence, you could even say he’s a bad person but you can’t help but to love him (well at least in my case)😔.
Also, random but, I read a fic where the author basically suggested that Mario got a hold of Panama’s suppliers to mess with Armando. I remember how Armando defended Mario (from Betty) calling him a professional and knows what he’s doing so to not worry about the transaction. As a professional and someone who worked in his field for years, wouldn’t you know right away that the business they were about to do was sketchy? Let’s not forget that Betty was basically new to all this yet she had a hunch that the Panama’s suppliers were bad news so wouldn’t you expect a professional like Mario to know right away not to do business with them? Idk i feel like Mario did use Panama’s suppliers to sabotage Armando. Anyways sorry for this random rant but ever since I read that fic I can’t help but think about it!

BALTIMORE (WBFF) — Baltimore is facing a devastating reality as the latest round of state test scores are released.
WBFF analyzed the results and found a shocking number of Baltimore City schools where not a single student is doing math at grade level.
“We're not living up to our potential,” said Jovani Patterson, a Baltimore resident who made headlines in Jan. 2022, when he filed a lawsuit against Baltimore City Schools. The suit claims the district is failing to educate students and, in the process, misusing taxpayer funds.
“We, the taxpayer, are funding our own demise,” Patterson said at the time.
Patterson was born in Baltimore. He's seen the failures firsthand, but when WBFF showed him the latest test results for the city, he was momentarily rendered speechless.
“My immediate reaction is, take your kids out of these schools,” said Patterson.
The Maryland State Department of Education recently released the 2022 state test results known as MCAP, Maryland Comprehensive Assessment Program.
Baltimore City’s math scores were the lowest in the state. Just 7% of third through eighth graders tested proficient in math, which means 93% could not do math at grade level.
But that’s not all. WBFF combed through the scores at all 150 City Schools where the state math test was given. In 23 Baltimore City schools, there were zero students who tested proficient in math.
It just sounds like these schools, now, have turned into essentially babysitters with no accountability,” said Patterson. “This is the future of our city. We’ve got to change this.”
Among the list of 23 schools, there are 10 high schools, eight elementary schools, three middle/high schools and two elementary/middle schools.
Exactly 2,000 students, in total, took the state math test at these schools. Not one could do math at grade level.
“These kids can't do math. You're not preparing them to buy groceries. You're not preparing them to do accounting, to count their own money. You're not preparing them to read contracts and negotiate salaries,” said Patterson.
Maryland Gov. Wes Moore delivered his first State of the State address last week.
“We made the largest investment in public education by any governor in our state’s history,” Moore said during his speech, making his feelings about public education clear. It’s one of his top priorities.
“We can no longer separate our vision for economic prosperity from the duty to make Maryland’s public schools the best in the nation,” Moore said.
After the State of the State address, WBFF reached out to Moore’s office, asking to speak with him about his plan to improve education. Before becoming governor, Moore lived in Baltimore. WBFF wanted to ask him how he plans to help city students, especially those who attend the 23 schools.
Moore’s office did not respond, but City Schools did send WBFF a statement with steps it’s taking to improve math scores, including professional development for teachers, summer learning and an extended learning period at the end of the day.
The statement said, in part, “We're confident these instructional strategies will help us regain the momentum and progress we experienced before the pandemic.”
Zero percent. What are you preparing these kids for?” said Patterson. “Are we expecting these kids to kill off themselves? I mean, we see the number of teen shootings happening just this year. What jobs are we preparing these kids for? That's the future.”
WBFF found three additional schools where zero students tested proficient in math, which we did not include in the list of 23. One of those schools is for incarcerated youth, and the other two are for students with disabilities. It’s also important to note that another 20 Baltimore City Schools had just one or two students test proficient in math.

This level of incapability doesn't suddenly materialize over a 2 year pandemic. It requires a steady program of neglect, incompetence and poor pedagogy. It would be interesting to compare these outcomes to reading and writing proficiency; students who can't read or write can't do math.

CTB Scrap - Dinner With Impa
This is another scrap from the opening to chapter 5 where Link and the engineer go off to battle together for the first time. This scene is meant to transition into the scene where the engineer tries talking to the child the night before.
I actually really like the idea behind this scene. We get a bit of a look at Link and Impa's dynamic while giving the engineer an opportunity to explain how his senses work.
I don't quite remember exactly why I didn't like this when I first wrote it. I remember being very frustrated with how this came out and being unable to figure out what was wrong with it. It was easier to cut it than try to make it work.
Note: this is an unedited scrap, so the writing may not be up to snuff. Also, everything include was deleted for a reason, so please do not take it as canon to CTB.

Link studied the engineer. He had been quiet since the night before. They both had a meeting with General Impa in the Sheikah headquarters sequestered in its own little corner of the camp. Dressed down in her traditional Sheikah robes, she balanced a precarious line between intimidating and inviting as they dined on a noodle dish common only in Kakariko. Her red eyes were like blades, but Link had seen the other side of them. When Zelda had gone into hiding, Impa had been the one to take his hand and guide him into becoming the hero. She was the one who drilled proper etiquette and wrung the commoner’s accent from his speech, who taught him how to think on his feet, who tore down his strategies until he built them to perfection. Hell, he was sure he wouldn’t even have a salary if she didn’t sit him down and show him how to negotiate for one.
 At first, Impa had kept their talk to what Link thought the Royal Guard’s strategy should be next. He may have been the hero, he was still only a common born captain. He needed her on his side if he wanted any of his strategies to be enacted. When they had exhausted everything that topic had to offer, Impa turned an eye to the engineer. “So Lincoln tried poaching you from right under our noses,” she said.
The engineer shrugged, turning his eyes away. He pushed his chopsticks around the biscuit drizzled with honey Impa had served them for dessert. It wasn’t a lot, but with all the rationing, it was the sweetest thing they’d had in a while. “Yeah, uh… I guess you can call it that,” he said.
She smiled indulgently. “Well, I’m glad you chose to stay with us. You are an exceptional asset for Hylia’s cause.”
The engineer tightened his mouth, but said nothing.
Link gritted his teeth. “He’s just nervous about the battle tomorrow,” he said, trying to both monitor Impa’s expressions and comfort the engineer. Sitting as they were on the ground, Link slipped his hand over the engineer’s floor cushion, finding his wrist. He held it, hoping it was enough.
Impa smiled. “That’s understandable. Approaching battles can always be intimidating, but as a hero, I’m sure you have had your fair share of defeating foes.”
The engineer shrugged. “Sure, but I’m really just a Royal Engineer.”
Impa picked up a teapot, taking a moment to refill her cup. The pause was oppressive, but Link knew better than to play into Impa’s tactics. He squeezed the engineer’s wrist tighter. “They say that many of the heroes of old were privy to special abilities granted to them by the goddesses. They could change forms, defy time, and even command the elements. All of these skills they used to ensure Hyrule’s safety. And I heard you have a skill of your own beyond being an engineer.”
Link frowned. He had mentioned the engineer’s abilities to the general in passing. He trusted Impa not to abuse that information, but he didn’t know where she was going with this.
The engineer shrugged, looking away. “I’ve always been able to sense spirits,” he said.
“So you have always been a hero,” she said. “A sixth sense is a valuable asset to have.”
“It’s…” He hesitated, making a soured expression. “I don’t really like calling it that.”
She raised a brow.
He sighed. “Saying its one sense is like saying it’s isolated. And that’s not really how it’s like. It’s more like all of my other senses are lighting up. I can recognize someone’s spirit by the sound it makes, or the taste it leaves in my mouth, or how it feels—or any combination of it.” He twisted his arm enough for Link to think he wanted him to let go. But when he did, the engineer grabbed his wrist, keeping him in place. It wasn’t the hand with the Triforce mark, but the engineer still swiped his thumb over the back of Link’s hand in soothing, rhythmic motions.
What did the engineer sense when he was near, Link wondered. What was his spirit like?
“It’s not—I just don’t really think it’s as helpful as you think it is,” the engineer added. “At least, not the way it is back home.”
“Satiate an old woman’s curiosity,” Impa said. “How is my spirit?”
The engineer looked at her for a long moment. “There’s shadows around my vision,” he said. “And there’s a taste in my mouth—I don’t think I’ve ever had it before. It’s really spicy.”
Impa nodded, lingering in another moment of tactical silence.
The engineer winced, almost dropping his chopsticks. This has happened enough times now that Link knew what that expression meant. The engineer let go of Link’s wrist as he stood. “Thanks for dinner, but I need to get going now,” he said.
The corner of her lips twitched, but she managed to smile. “Of course. You need your rest for tomorrow.”
“Great. Thanks!” He hurried off, barely remembering to give her a sloppy salute before fleeing through the tent’s flaps.
A moment later, he rushed back in. “Sorry, let me just…” He took the honeyed biscuit off the plate, wrapping it up in a handkerchief he pulled from the pockets of his jumpsuit. He gave them both a grin and a second, more purposeful salute. “Thanks!”
And he left again.
 Impa and Link sat in silence for a while—first, expecting him to run in and steal more food. Then it was to make sure he was far enough away that they could both talk frankly. Link sipped at his cup of tea, resisting the urge to grimace at its grassy taste. The drink itself had a pale green color that reminded Link of falling asleep on Hyrule Field’s grassy knolls. He didn’t know how Impa enjoyed drinking this, but it was a traditional Sheikah beverage.
“He seems like a gentle soul,” Impa said at last.
“He’s shy.” Link placed his cup on the table. “If you have any questions for him, direct them to me first. He’s my subordinate, and I don’t appreciate you trying to interrogate him.”
“You’re too sensitive, hero. It was professional curiosity.”
He glowered.
Impa pushed back the billowing sleeves of her robe, enough to give her hands the freedom to push through her white hair, adjusting pins back into place. “Lincoln ignored the boy’s wishes and put in a request for his transfer,” she said. “He didn’t get it, but I admit I was curious as to why the Master Knight wanted the engineer so badly.”
Link’s blood was loud in his ears. “He just wants to screw me over,” he spat.
Impa gave him an unimpressed look. “We both know he’s not like that,” she said. “Dislike him as much as you want, but he’s the Master Knight for a reason.”
Link thought back to the night of the party, walking through every beat of their conversation. Distinctly, he recalled the way Lincoln scrutinized the engineer, biting like a fish on a hook onto the idea of him being a royal engineer. “It wasn’t his spirit abilities, if that’s what you’re wondering,” he said. Sighing, he rose to his feet. “Thank you for dinner, Impa. I appreciate you meeting with me, and I won’t overstay my welcome.”
Impa gave him a knowing look. “You take care of that boy tomorrow. First battle’s always the hardest.”
Link waved her off. “Will do, general.”
When Link left the tent, he was unsurprised to see things.

PARIS—At first glance, France’s trade unions have never been better. Their campaign against President Emmanuel Macron’s plan to raise the retirement age has drawn hundreds of thousands of protesters to the streets, and labor leaders are fixtures on the most popular TV channels. Almost half of the French think trade unions rather than any political party embody the real opposition to Macron, and the overwhelming majority think the damaging strikes against his pension reform are justified.
But under this patina of success, French unions are wheezing. Membership numbers are down sharply, and many labor leaders feel their organizations have failed to stem the neoliberal wave that has been eroding workers’ rights for decades—and has only accelerated under Macron. Since he took power in 2017, Macron—a former investment banker who campaigned on a centrist, pro-business platform—has loosened the rules for firing employees, capped compensations for illegal layoffs, and favored agreements between management and workers at the company-level rather than for entire sectors, which critics say undermines employees’ bargaining power.
“The unions’ strategy over the past decades has not yielded any major victories on a national level,” said Olivier Mateu, head of the General Confederation of Labor (CGT)’s Bouches-du-Rhône section in southern France.
Unions, particularly the fiery CGT, have tried to put up a fight. But their leaders have been criticized for a lack of unity and determination as well as for thinking they could get Macron to change course by sitting at the negotiating table rather than taking to the picket line.
“Macron really took them for a ride,” said Jean-Bernard Gervais, a former communications advisor at CGT and the author of a scathing book about the union’s inner workings.
It’s been a long fall from glory for what was one of Europe’s most powerful labor movements. In 1936, the country’s first successful general strike led to paid leave, shorter working hours, and higher salaries. Workers’ rights were further expanded by means of tough strike actions in the years following World War II, when unions could count on millions of members. In the 1960s and for most of the 1970s, unionization rates were still hovering well above 20 percent. In May 1968, mass walkouts by an unprecedented 10 million workers yielded major concessions, such as a big increase in the minimum wage and a larger role for union representatives in the workplace.
Since the late 1970s, however, with the eruption of neoliberal economic policies in the Western world, French unions have been in a steady decline. The French working class, with its purchasing power dwindling and employment conditions worsening, seems increasingly disillusioned about the mechanisms in place to defend its rights. The share of unionized workers has fallen to barely 7 percent. Elections held last December to select union representatives in the public sector saw the lowest turnout on record, and the share of people who have confidence in trade unions has shrunk to barely 36 percent.
France is not alone. Unions have lost one-quarter of their members since 1980 in the United States, and 47 percent in Germany. Even British unions, which can count on strong ties with the mainstream Labour Party and are currently involved in unprecedented walkouts by health service staff over pay, have hemorrhaged almost half of their affiliates.
Part of the malaise has roots common to most of the developed world. Manufacturing, which traditionally was heavily unionized, has been hollowed out in much of the West. But with their membership tanking at a faster pace than in most wealthy countries, French unions have problems of their own. More than elsewhere, French workers’ organizations are heavily reliant on a variety of public handouts, which means they are less dependent on large numbers of paying members. This, in turn, has led to the rise of an apparatus of full-time union employees that has little accountability to (and is often distrusted by) the regular workforce. Since 1974, while the CGT’s affiliates have fallen by two-thirds, its central staff has increased fivefold. “It’s a bureaucracy whose sole goal is to protect itself,” Gervais said.
Despite the fierce battle currently underway over Macron’s pension reform, the reality of French labor relations is hardly in line with the stereotype of French unions constantly at war with employers and the government. Most of them benefit from material resources provided by the companies where they are present, leading to worries about their representatives’ independence and bargaining power. And while the French do stage walkouts more than almost any other country in Europe, a French private sector worker goes on strike barely one day every 17 years on average.
Feeling they aren’t being properly represented by trade unions, France’s have-nots have found other ways to channel their discontent. The surge of the far-right National Rally party has been largely fueled by working-class votes. In 2018 and 2019, weekly “yellow vest” rallies against taxes and economic inequality often escalated into violent clashes with the police.
At the time, Macron was quick to scrap the fuel tax hike that had originally triggered the demonstrations. Now, should the unions fail to stop the government’s pension reform, some worry that more violent forms of protest could make a comeback.
“It may have a radicalizing effect, with some workers deciding that nothing can be achieved by playing nice and they should do like the yellow vests—smash everything up,” said Jean-Dominique Simonpoli, a former branch leader at CGT and president of La Fabrique du Social, a consultancy that aims to facilitate labor relations.
French unions are also extremely fragmented, with eight main organizations competing for members, influence, and resources. The two largest, the CGT and the more moderate (and even bigger) French Democratic Confederation of Labor, are on notoriously bad terms, with the former often accusing the latter of “betraying” workers by settling for minor concessions. Divisions run deep within single organizations too, often making it hard to come up with a coherent strategy. The CGT, in particular, is plagued by long-standing tensions between the more combative sections, such as the Railway Workers’ Federation, and those more open to compromise, with CGT leader Philippe Martinez coming under fire at the same time for being too soft and too hard-line.
“Managing all this is more circus art than a political exercise,” said Dominique Andolfatto, a professor of political science at the Université de Bourgogne.
Despite the bleak picture, trade unions still occupy an important place in French society. Macron may have battered them and ignored their concerns on many fronts, but he is not former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.
“At company level, Macron has sought to boost the unions’ role,” Simonpoli said. Shortly after taking power, the French president imposed a new rule that forces companies to get the green light from unions representing more than half of their employees—if they want to make changes on issues like salaries or working hours.
“Macron’s intuition is that unions are more and more out of touch with workers, which is not a good thing, and we must revitalize them at the firms’ level,” said Antoine Foucher, chief of staff for Macron’s former labor minister, Muriel Pénicaud, between 2017 and 2020. Boosting unions in the canteen is one thing, but letting them decide how the central government should use its purse is another. In Macron’s view, when it comes to national reforms, “trade unions aren’t representative enough while the political power has the legitimacy of universal suffrage,” Foucher said.
With a wildly unpopular pension reform looming, union leaders beg to differ. After six weeks of nationwide strikes, they are planning to “bring France to a standstill” on March 7. For the first time in decades, all major workers’ organizations have managed to set their differences aside in a show of unity that is revitalizing the movement. It’s either the last gasp of French labor—or the beginning of a rebirth.
“Regardless of how it will end, this will have been a remarkable success for the unions,” Andolfatto said. What remains to be seen is “whether this is the beginning of a deeper shift.”
