“the class commentary in saltburn was shit” WHAT CLASS COMMENTARY???? NOT EVERY MOVIE WITH RICH PEOPLE HAS TO OR SHOULD HAVE CLASS COMMENTARY. EMERALD FENNELL KNOWS VERY WELL THAT SHE IS NOT THE RIGHT DIRECTOR FOR A MOVIE ABOUT CLASS COMMENTARY WHICH IS WHY SHE DID NOT WRITE A MOVIE ABOUT CLASS COMMENTARY.

I lost my mind when I saw this costume!
In Celtic mythology the white stag is a messenger from the otherworld, often a harbinger. It often appears when one has transgressed, and must atone or be undone. And yet it is also associated with prosperity. In this case, a white stag shows up in the house of prosperity to show them their own transgressions and brings ruin upon their house. That's Oliver. The white stag showing the aristocrats their transgressions and each of them fails to atone and is summarily undone. Except the father. The knight who banishes the white stag. Who lives out the rest of his life free of Oliver, who only returns to Saltburn upon his death.
The jacket embroidery is oak and acorns. This is often representative of power, victory, and enduring hardship. It also represents sorrow.
I saw this costume and I knew this deranged little freak would bring this house to ruin. I lost my fucking mind when I saw this costume.

One thing I cannot get over from Saltburn is the contrast between older Oliver narrating this big dramatic story at us like some kind of cliche supervillain, so proud of himself and how terribly scary and evil he was the whole time -
vs. Oliver in the maze begging Felix to forgive him, to listen to him, to still want him, right up until Felix tells him oh so softly, "You make my fucking blood run cold." And it's like a flipped switch, the way Oliver shuts down. You can practically see him give up as Felix's fear of who he is finally registers over Felix's anger at his lies.
And how it's not the rejection out of anger but the rejection out of fear that Oliver can't even imagine getting over.
How he tells the audience this story that makes him out to be a villain who is happy to be feared, but in universe the only people who hear it are himself and a woman who is too comatose to hear a word of his confession.
How he tells himself that they should have feared him all along, and then surrounds himself with a massive empty castle with no one left close enough to be afraid.

This scene was gorgeously shot, the light the framing all of it.

Character Opinion Bingo: Elspeth Catton
ohhh omg
Tumblr media
so. she's a horrible mother. i think she loves her husband or at least has a semblance of warmth for him, either current or residual, and her husband adores her. and she is the type of person who should never have had kids. i don't think she would've, had an option of not having them been presented to her, but for a woman like her having kids is a given, an expectation, and so she had them: two, a boy and a girl, for a perfect nuclear family and a perfect heir set.
i also think that it is useful to reframe her as the center of saltburn as a movie, saltburn as a household, saltburn as a legacy. this is a gothic narrative about a house that sees the fall of a family. gothic stories about houses and their families very rarely have mothers in them. saltburn does. i have very difinitive thoughts about why and what it does specifically for oliver, felix, venetia, and the narrative overall.
the projection and the i understand her better than everyone else marked in yellow are there because, well. not for the aforementioned, the heir and the nuclear dream reasons, but for a lot of other, numerous reasons, she reminds me too much of my own mother. my own mother said, two minutes into elspeth's screen time, oh, that is me! how delightful. so i will not be elaborating further at the risk of turning this into a therapy session-like rant. i could've written a lot, i truly do think i understand elspeth very, very well, i believe i know exactly what she is to her core. and because of this i also believe that i understand felix and venetia in ways i haven't seen brought up much. i think there were a couple of posts about felix being a neglected child, but not much in depth, and that is what i mean here specifically.
but anyway. again. she's interesting. in some ways triggering to me. but in so many other ways the center of saltburn as a narrative it's insane.
