My Final Post Regarding Velvette As a Character

And I must say it ends on a good note :) sort of.

Oh the sunny side gave a wonder critique on hairstyles of ethnic characters on two upcoming indi animations, Far fetched and Pen pals forever. The critique came from a black person and was a sound and valid critique. The response from Ashley and Marie exemplifies how a creator especially one who is making or trying to make an independent animated series should respond to critique especially from ethnic voices.

Just look at these responses from both creators, so beautiful to see like this warmed my heart to see how Ashley and Marie took the critique. Marie said they will better even going as far as hiring the right people and Ashley stating that she'll revisit Piper's design in the final series. But sigh enough about this absolutely positive critique and creator response this is what should have happened with Velvette. Over so many years ethnic voices have critiqued Velvette's design in it lacking all ethnic features yet Viv wants to push she's a black woman. She was even hostile to an artist who redesigned Velvette from the leaked character sheets and said the person whitewashed Velvette in the redesign but she's bloody grey ashy toned in her original design like I cannot what. Anyhow her design still could've improved in the final series and...

Yeah nope. My point in all of this is listen to ethnic voices especially if you're an independent project because that is truly where you can make representation shine. Viv prides herself on starting Hazbin as an independent animated project and time and time again got wonderful criticism to better her especially ethnic characters like Vaggie, Val, Alastor, Niffty, Velvette and the list can go on. But she didn't she took all criticism from these voices as an attack on her and basically said "stuff your critique and wanting to see better more accurate representation my designs are perfect and need no changes". And I know Viv is half Salvadorian but that doesn't negate from the fact her ethnic characters are badly designed, Marie is Chinese but took that criticism with care and would better because she is not part of that ethnic group of one of her characters and is making a show that highlights representation so they will better the character's design, just beautiful to see. Viv as we all know doesn't take criticism well I get it but to shut out ethnic voices on designs you could've changed on so many occasions (basically over 10 years really since she had these characters for so long) is deeply insulting and heartbreaking. And that old excuse on "its just her artstyle" is bull its not even valid for a number of logical reasons if your artstyle cannot be pushed to incorporate ethnic features, I don't need to go into how bad that is.

In closing, listen to ethnic voices especially if you're making independent animated projects, animation on its own is unique medium to show representation without restrictions, its an open playing field you literally design the character you can do justice to representation. And if you're designing a character out of your ethnic group reach out, heck sometimes we make mistakes designing characters from our own ethnic group, ahm Vaggie. And lastly being independent you can get a lot more viewer feedback and engagement and that can be the most helpful. Marie and Ashley I hope live up to their word as I'm exited on both their series, wish Viv did the same but oh well we'll just be repeating ourselves, same old story thats set in stone hmm.

Hm. Weird thought I don't know how to explain. But ...so we know how there's this weird phenomena ((a phenomena Vivienne seems to almost encourage whenever she can)) of VivziePop's fans giving her credit for every single thing related to her series, even if she didn't do it, even if most of the work for her series (and some of the best work of it) is done by other artists? I feel like people do this for her Salvadorian heritage as well. What I mean is...it almost feels like they celebrate HER for what HER FAMILY accomplished. SHE didn't move her family over to the states, SHE didn't make the choice to adopt her cousins as brothers so they could live here, SHE didn't work her ass off so her family could live comfortably, HER FAMILY did that. It's great that she's been vocally proud of her heritage and family for whatever hard work they did to come over to the states and support her/her siblings--but people need to stop treating her as if she's the immigrant who built herself up from nothing. I wouldn't doubt her parents drilled in a concept of hard-work and determination into her, but far as we know she's been more than comfortably provided for her whole life. Don't give her credit for her family's hard-work.

Immigrants are people and the kids of immigrants are just like anyone else's kids. Sometimes they grow up to be hard-working and generous and all around wonderful people to know, sometimes they're spoiled assholes.

3/25/24 – “Ever after”

From this point on – what does that look like for me? At twenty-seven, seventy-seven days to twenty-eight it looks really simple. Financial stability, a man who loves me through action, and two healthy children, preferably two girls. Unfortunately, under late capitalism that is asking for a lot. I could move to middle America and call it a wrap, but my family and community are here. The California lemon drop of a sun is here and nowhere else.

I suppose at twenty-three I was okay with moving to the Midwest, to a much cheaper part of the country and living with my envisioned fiancé and his palm-colored family that might not like me at first, but they’d love me eventually. Needless to say, that didn’t work as I hoped. They were God fearing and I had a healthy fear of religion. I did see an ever after though, as much as it may embarrass me now. A life in a nice big house with no backyard fences and endless street parties. My little girls would have ribbons in their hair, and we’d go to church with their daddy and if they ever expressed that they weren’t certain on how they felt about God, I’d tell them that it was okay. That their mommy had an ill relationship with that man since she was five years old. With that fantasy coming in and out of my mind I finally decided that I didn’t really love him. He was a youth leader at his church, and I dressed up as the devil as often as I could. What I did love was the thought of being far from my mother and snatching someone everyone thought was desirable – including my mother. Well except for me, when I really looked at him, he made me angry.

Between the ages of twenty and twenty-two ever after was becoming a very successful writer, maybe an installation artist, I’d so charismatic that I’d make friends everywhere I went and someone would eventually ask me to star in their indie film. The movie would do better than expected and I’d be nominated for an Oscar. I wouldn’t win, one of the many seasoned actresses would take the little gold man home, but goodness! What a milestone just to be nominated. Then I’d get really drunk at one of the after parties, not yellow pole drunk or dry humping drunk, just drunk enough to be dancing on the floor. Someone would insist we did karaoke and I’d be invited to the mic. Then bam! Music career. I’d never be rich – I haven’t believed in being rich for some time now – but I’d be well off. I’d donate to charities and eventually settle down with someone. We’d have two little girls and live in the California mountains.

At eighteen after my first major heartbreak and several overdoses I thought ever after would be living in a shack sized house by the beach with nothing but some tattered clothes and my laptop to write. I’d wake up every morning, smoke a cigarette and enjoy a cup of coffee. I’d walk around, have small talk with the people in the community. If the weather permitted, I’d take a dip into the ocean and think about how lovely and empty the universe really is. Then I’d grab something from the cheapest eatery – not my favorite, just the cheapest – and I’d speak to the owner. We’d be really good friends, but they wouldn’t know that I got food poisoning from their shop three times in the last year. I’d go home, have an evening glass of coffee because I am Salvadorian at the end of the day and have one last cigarette. (I more than likely had five while I was out.) I’d write on a piece of scrap paper to get more cigarettes and to call Taylor back. Taylor would be one of the many men I was having a love affair with. In this scenario I wasn’t sure what kind of writer I’d be, just that I’d be one and I’d have enough money to live in a shack sized house by the beach.

I realized that I had an unhealthy desire to be something no one could catch but would dream of constantly. That was simply because I had been heartbroken, and I wanted to break anything that slightly resembled a heart.

I suppose ultimately ever after still looks the same. Stability, love, and two children that can be of any gender as long as they have their health. To be able to stay close to my family and friends. To not die wishing for more and being very appreciative of everything I got. To be happy.

What motivates these artists?

How do they go about collecting and assembling their work?

Marcel Duchamp 1. He was a French painter who first produced cubist and impressionist works. With the purpose of challenging social concepts of art and artists who created works focused solely on beauty rather than thoughts, he gave his subsequent sculptures the name "ready mades." 2. He purchased a stool and a wheel from the store for one of his most well-known pieces, then linked the two to make the objects unusable.

Meret Oppenheim 1. She was a 22-year-old art student and the designer of the renowned Surrealism fur teacup that immediately attracted renowned surrealist artist's eye. 2. Jokes served as the foundation for the development of her iconic surrealist works. She would make fur jewelry and made fun of the fact that she could technically put fur on anything.

Robert Rauschenberg 1. Rauchenberg was an abstract expressionist in New York who painted on whatever he chose and was influenced by Duchamp. According to him, art is more than just paint on a canvas. 2. His most famous piece, "Bed," was a wall sculpture depicting his painted bedspread and cushion. His artwork was also inspired by a joke that said he was unable to purchase the necessary canvas or paint materials due to the state of the economy.

Guadalupe Maravilla 1. He is a Salvadorian artist whose influences on his work included his upbringing, life experiences, and relationship with the spirit world. 2. Maravilla incorporates healing gongs into his sculpture displays, and his tripa chuca drawings on walls and sculpture pieces are also featured in his artwork. These drawings were initially based on a game he played while crossing the border. He used natural materials, such as those gathered from cities along his travel path, to construct a variety of animal sculptures. Some sculptures developed as shrines built during his battle with cancer.

Personal Thoughts on my criticism on Vivziepop

I think the reason why me and many others are so critical on Viv's work especially in regards to representation on poc characters/LGBTQA+ representation is that she constantly prides herself as an independent creator to showcase such representation. By making her characters like Alastor creole, Vaggie Salvadorian, Niffty Japanese, Velvette black and having them also have different sexualities and such but her execution of its is very lacking. Her poc characters while in description are diverse and beautiful their designs fall flat on all fronts. A tweet in regards to her LGBTQA+ representation:

While I agree fully with this tweet sentiments we have seen time and time again an example her show helluva boss where many people and LGBTQA+ people have pointed out how stereotypical and offensive helluva boss queer characters are. There is even instances of sexual harassment between characters, boundaries being ignored and just so much Horrendous behaviour its lengthy to mention, watch the show with an open mind you'll see. As a former fan and artist so inspired by her work it is heartbreaking to see. Not saying as an independent creator its your job to showcase all the representation but if you claim you are going to then proceed make characters with descriptions so diverse and fail badly on it and are critiqued to fix it but refuse, that is bad very bad.
