Or, send in a ⭐star⭐  to have the author select a section they’ve been dying to talk about!
Literally no one other than us two (and maybe a few others) cares about the 3 Ninjas movies/fandom but this is something I've wanted to talk about after having talked about it/realized it with Rhuben and is something that I'm going to bring up in the Between A Rock and Hard Place fic series that focuses on Rocky to explain the highs and lows of being the eldest child and being his father's namesake as well as a well knonw ninja.
Ahem.
The boys' ninja names are obviously important. Rocky = cool and solid as granite rock. Colt = wild and free as the spirit of a young horse. Tum-Tum = energy begins and ends with his stomach. We know that.
BUT!
Their actual names are really important as well.
Rocky aka Samuel Jr. off their father, Samuel Sr. Rocky being the first born was named after their father. If he was a girl, his name would've more than likely been Samantha to keep the 'Sam' part of their names. He still would've been a Jr. You can tell in some instances that there's a very good chance he was parentified in some ways. You can kind of see it in Kick Back when he immediately speaks like a parent to tell Colt and Tum-Tum to go into the house when Darren and the rest of the Mustangs are antagonizing them. But in all movies it's clear he takes his responsibility as the eldest seriously and despite not being especially close to the adults in the films, you could bet that he's closest to their father because of his namesake.
Colt aka Jeffrey off their mother, Jessica. If Colt were born a girl, chances are he would be Jessica Jr but since he was a boy, he's named Jeffrey, which is the male version of 'Jessica' with the same number of letters compared to being called 'Jesse'. He is also shown to have a close relationship with their mother because she immediately comes to his defense anytime something is antagonizing him (re: Samuel Sr.) and also works hard to reassure him when he gets his new ninja name and when it's clear the boys are effected with their dad's absence/workaholic tendencies.
Tum-Tum aka Michael off of their grandpa Mori. In every 3 Ninjas movie you see that Tum-Tum is the closest to their grandpa. He's the only one of the boys that has a nickname from Mori other than their ninja name, as he's called 'Little One' once in every movie (I believe). Being the youngest, he tends to be sidelined by his brothers and not listened to but Mori is clearly very fond of Tum-Tum and believes in him considering he trains the young boy in ninja and doesn't get too upset or annoyed by Tum-Tum's preoccupation with food. Especially as I feel his food preoccupation is filling an emotional hole left behind by his father consistently being gone.
The boys were named after the three most important adults in their lives and it wasn't a coincidence.

3 Ninjas (1992)
Tumblr media
Take The Karate Kid and Home Alone. Blend them together. Now, bash the results in the head a dozen times to properly reduce its I.Q. Now you've got 3 Ninjas. This martial arts action comedy has no stakes, flat characters and a sense of humor that might entertain the littlest children but will drive every adults in the audience insane.
Every year, twelve-year-old Samuel “Rocky” (Michael Treanor), eleven-year-old Jeffrey “Colt” (Max Elliott Slade) and eight-year-old Michael “Tum-Tum” Douglas (Chad Power) visit their grandfather (Victor Wong) so he can train them in the art of ninjutsu. When the boy’s father, Sam (Alan McRae), runs afoul of crime lord Hugo Snyder (Rand Kingsley), the three pint-sized ninjas become targets but Snyder has no idea what he’s getting into.
It took me a while to realize Grandpa Mori Tanaka was not played by Pat Morita. I just thought his face might’ve changed a bit in the eight years since The Karate Kid. I was fooled. The film’s target audience would’ve been too. What makes them different? Aside from the 1984 film being all about the buildup to the big tournament and this wannabee starting with the three kids already fully-trained? The hijinks. This movie is all about the hijinks; the kind who require the adults involved to be so stupid they would’ve all starved to death. At one point, the three kidnappers Snyder's sent after the tiny ninjas are locked into the same room as just one of their targets and they fail to overcome him. It’s dark, but come on. How are we supposed to feel any tension when the kids effortlessly defeat the villains after them?
I want to throw extra tomatoes (or ninja stars, whichever hurts more) at writers Kenny Kim and Edward Emanuel. In one scene, Rocky and Colt go up against two schoolyard bullies who’ve stolen their neighbor Emily’s bike. They agree to settle things with a game of basketball. If Rocky and Colt win, the bullies will return the bike. If the bullies win, our heroes are humiliated in front of the whole school and have to forfeit their wheels as well. It shouldn’t even be any kind of contest. When Colt and Rocky get the ball, they easily score baskets from their side of the court and make dunks without any effort. They’re practically flying through the air like superheroes. They score nine baskets in a row while the entire schoolyard explodes in cheers. Except they spotted the bullies nine points and one false move later, they’ve lost everything. It’ll make you so angry you’ll want to tear the TV off the wall and throw it out the window. So what if the bullies won “fair and square”? They scored ONE POINT. Their adversaries scored NINE! The miniature thugs should be rushing towards the bathroom to change their underwear, not celebrating. The Douglas brother should be legends whose reputation would have all the female teachers trying to seduce them. It’s bullshit of the purest form.
Everything in 3 Ninjas is so preposterous it actually becomes hilarious for a while. Unintentionally hilarious but I won’t complain about being entertained. Unfortunately, the movie hears you laughing and then switches mode, becoming a straight-up "comedy". Oh, the fat kid is eating again. He’s ALWAYS eating. because he’s fat. Get it? Fat kids get fat because they’re always eating! The three Wayne’s World wannabees sent to their house all drink laxatives. Can you guess what’s next? Even the entertaining “spot the stunt double” game you’ll be playing whenever grandpa comes around can't make up for a comedy that isn't funny. The international version lasts 96 minutes and feels like 96 kicks to the head.
Most of 3 Ninjas is so forgettable and poorly written I’ll likely forget about it, leaving me with only memories of the funniest parts of the film. There’s a scene where a bully rides in all proud and tough-looking while riding a pink girl’s bike. I dare you not to burst out laughing. The best thing I can say about this movie by Jon Turteltaub (who made a lot of bad Disney Movies, along with The Meg and While You Were Sleeping) is that while I hated it, I’m also not upset to have seen it. Hopefully I can say the same about the sequels… (International Version, September 10, 2021)

Meeting and Dating Samuel ‘Rocky’ Douglas
Tumblr media
(My gif/there’s like no decent footage of ‘kick back’ online)(Requested by anonymous)
- You and Rocky meet when you’re young. You’d lived next door to the Douglas family your entire life so it was pretty much inevitable that you’d end up becoming friends with at least one of the boys growing up.
- Funnily enough, it wasn’t Samuel that you’d befriended, it was Jeffrey.
- You’d tried to weasel your way into all the boys lives; and succeeded in becoming a surrogate older sister to Tum Tum over the years, but it seemed as though Sam just …didn’t like you very much.
- Any time you were around him, he’d seemingly try to get away from you as quickly as possible, or distract himself with something so that he could barely acknowledge your presence. He’d always cut your conversations short or give you two word answers and any time you felt as though you were having a break through, he’d seem to realize that he was being friendly and close himself off yet again.
- But Jeffrey, or Colt, would usually pull you away from his older brother anyways, distracting you with some game or activity that he wanted to play/do before you could dwell on his brothers borderline rudeness.
- Colt had never understood why his brothers …approval; for lack of a better word, mattered so much to you and for a while, neither did you. But the older you got, the more you realized that you’d always had a bit of a crush on the boy whether you knew it or not.
- But you couldn’t tell Colt that. Instead, you had to tell him that you just didn’t want things to always be awkward when you joined him and his brothers on their little adventures; secretly sighing in relief as he accepted the answer.
- Unbeknownst to you, there was a reason for Rocky’s closed off attitude: he’d had a crush on you since elementary school and he’d, admittedly, never been very good with girls.
- So, while you were wondering why your best friends brother hated you, he was internally scolding himself for not being able to say more than two words to you before his knees felt like buckling beneath him.
- Considering how shy he was with you, things could have easily continued on like that for, well, forever. But then something changed.
- One morning, you arrived at the Douglas house and found yourself walking into a very tense atmosphere. You could tell that Colt was upset about something and given how quiet the rest of the table was, you assumed it had something to do with one of his siblings; assumedly Rocky from the way he was avoiding the boys occasional pointed looks.
- The minute Colt noticed you, he shot up out of his seat and pulled you out of the house with him, leaving you little time to meet the gaze of Rocky whose eyes immediately shot up to look at you.
- As you walked, you tried to pry some information out of the boy but it was pointless, he refused to answer any of your questions, opting to stay nearly silent or telling you that it “was nothing”; even though you knew better.
- It’s a whole week before things start to go back to normal but there’s still some tension between Rocky and Colt. Your dear pal Jeffrey, who once loved having his brothers tag along, now seems hesitant to allow his older brother to accompany you guys. …And here you thought things were awkward before.
- Another week goes by before you learn exactly what happened. You’re sitting at home when your mother calls you, telling you that you have a guest as you head to the front door. Standing in your foyer is Rocky, a sight you never thought you’d see, and the sheer surprise you feel upon seeing him makes you stop in your tracks.
- His eyes meet your frozen figure and he licks his lips, opening his mouth to say something before he shuts it again. A second passes before he manages to get out a “hi”, watching as you finally begin to walk towards him again.
- You give a quiet hello in response and a beat of silence passes between you before he asks if you can talk, letting you lead him outside after you nod.
- The two of you are quiet for a while before he turns and asks how you’ve been just as you’re about to say something to break the silence. You answer that you’re fine with a little laugh and you ask how he’s been before you ask the question that's really been on your mind.
“Seems like you and Colt have been fighting.”
“A little I guess.”
“Why’s that?”
“...Well uh …he found out something he isn’t too happy about.” You quirked an eyebrow up at his words and asked what it was.
“...That I …like...you.” He says slowly, as though he’s forcing himself to finally say the words.
- The phrase could mean a few things but you immediately know exactly what he’s confessing when he says them and a small smile finds it’s way onto your face.
“Yeah, you should never bring that sort of thing up to Colt.” You say, feeling an overwhelming urge to tease the boy just a little.
“Yeah I guess I found that out,” He laughs a little and you can hear the nervousness in it. “So, uh...” You hum questioningly and he continues. “What do you think?”
“Think about what?”
“About …about me liking you....”
“I think I like it,” You give him a smile. “I like you too Rocky.”
- The two of you have your first date at the beach. Colt and Tum Tum probably found out you were planning on going and just immediately went with you, forcing you to come up with ways to sneakily bond with each other during your borderline disastrous date. Regardless, you still enjoyed the day, even if you didn’t get to spend a whole lot of time alone.
- You share your first kiss when you arrive back home. Colt and Tum Tum had immediately gone inside while Rocky and you stayed behind to talk a little. He apologized for the brotherly ambush and you assured him you didn’t mind.
- He asked if you were sure and you laughed, nodding your head …then it just sort of happened. He leaned in and then you did and your lips met in a soft quick kiss before you pulled away and said a quiet goodbye.
- Colt may not have been too happy to spot his brother locking lips with his best friend but he got over it and gave his reluctant blessing, letting you accomplish your childhood dream of being with Samuel.
- There’s not a ton of pda in your relationship; mainly because his brothers are almost always nearby and he’s a little shy about that sort of thing. When there is pda, it’s usually pretty quick or on the friendlier appearing side of affection.
- His arm wrapped around your shoulder whenever you’re standing together.
- Sitting between his legs with his arms wrapped around you.
- Handholding.
- Tight hugs. He always scoops you up in one whenever he wins a game or match.
- Cheek kisses.
- Soft, almost featherlight kisses.
- Hair ruffling.
- The two of you usually cuddle snuggled into each other with his arm wrapped around your shoulders, although, if you’re going to be completely alone, he must admit that he does enjoy spooning quite a bit.
- Gushing over him whenever he wears his glasses, assuring him that you’re not making fun of him and that he really does look good in them.
- Holding and momentarily stealing his hats.
- Singing songs together/singing along to the radio.
- Teaching him about your interests and hobbies. He likes learning about them and trying them out whenever he can; even though he’s probably awful at them or knows he won’t like them.
- He likes looking at you whenever you aren't looking. You’ll catch him staring at you after you snap out of a daze or look away from whatever it was you were gazing at. He usually just shakes his head with a small smile whenever you ask him “what”.
- When you’re together, you’ll probably want to hang out somewhere outside or at your house; considering he shares a tiny room with both his brothers and you’ll never be completely left alone if you stay there.
- His brothers constantly interrupting the two of you.
- Both his brothers and occasionally his grandfather teasing him about you. He gets really shy about the whole thing and they love embarrassing him before you show up.
- He tends to just call you by your given name, though it’s very likely that he or one of his siblings/grandfather will come up with a nickname for you and he’ll use that a lot.
- Playing baseball; or all the other sports he plays, with him. He likes being able to teach you and watch you get all excited when you get better.
- Going to his games.
- Letting him teach you karate. He always shoots his brothers dirty and warning looks when they laugh at you.
- Motivating and cheering him on at everything he does.
- He looks back at you whenever he’s going to do something, making sure that you’re watching before he does something impressive. He likes showing off when you’re around.
- Taking walks in the woods together.
- Climbing and sitting in trees.
- Talking over the phone/tin can. He always has to call you to say goodnight.
- Getting visited whenever you’re sick. He comes to make sure you’re okay and keep you company; even if he gets a little sick himself.
- He’s always jumping to help you; even when you tell him to do the opposite or that you don’t need his help. It’s endearing yet annoying.
- Riding bikes together.
- Playing video games together; he either lets you win or tries to sabotage you depending on the day.
- Helping him cook and bake. You’re usually joined by Tum Tum who you have to watch very closely to ensure that the food actually gets made instead of consumed before it’s cooked.
- Getting taken to meet his grandfather or having Rocky introduce you to the man as his girlfriend after the two of you get together; at his brothers insistence.
- He occasionally likes to sneak up on you and tap your shoulder from behind to make you jump. You can’t even be mad at him, not when you turn and see the smile he has on.
- He hates seeing you upset and always asks a bunch of questions in an attempt to find out exactly what happened, making promises and trying his best to cheer you up while he does so.
- He’s pretty reasonable when it comes to jealousy so he doesn’t get jealous very often. On the off chance that he does, he’ll be patient but will tell the guy to back off if he doesn’t leave you alone; and if he’s obviously making you uncomfortable.
-  Speaking of telling guys to back off, he’s always ready to defend or protect you when necessary. He’ll also always go look for you when you disappear or are gone for longer than you should be, wanting to make sure you’re okay and that nothing happened.
- He has a habit of snapping when he’s embarrassed or mad so expect a snide comment or two. You’ll usually just say something along the lines of “ok geez” in response and a moment or two of silence will pass before the guilt gets to him and he sighs, beginning to explain himself and/or apologize.
- If you have a real fight, he’ll do whatever he can to make you forgive him. He always makes promises, even if he doesn’t exactly follow through on them; but he does have the best intentions regardless.
- He tells you that he loves you quite a bit; even though his brothers tease him for it. He just smiles at you and gives them a shove in response, not caring what they think.
- A guy who loves you through puberty is definitely a keeper so congratulations on finding your ninja, honey.

Not sure if anyone reads about the 3 Ninjas but it’s one of my all time favouritesss
You were sitting on your knees in front of the Douglass boys’ grandpa. He had been training them and yourself, to become ninjas. You were kneeling between Samuel and Jefrey, awaiting to get your ninja names. Then their grandpa turns to Sam and begins, “From this day forth until forever, you will be known as Rocky. Because you are strong, solid, and cool as granite rock!” You watch their grandpa pass a green mask over to him. You smile, knowing you’re next and knowing you must be getting a good name too. “Y/n, you’re strong, powerful and full of excitement just like a fire and you hold fire within you, you shall be known as flame!” Your smile grows, you were definitely happy with the name you were given. He the hands you a purple mask, which was very similar to Rocky’s. “Ahh, Jeffrey. Fast and free, spirit of the young wild horse; you shall be known as Colt!” You turned to colt, you smiled at him, you definitely know he has the best name, ‘Colt? That’s cool.’ Colt states as he is given a blue mask. “What about me?” Michael begins, “Can I be Monster Destroyer? Or how about Super Killer?” “How about Super Dork? ” Colt retaliates, you laugh at his remark then hear Michael reply, “Shut up, spazz!” “Ah, little one.” You all turn back to their grandpa awaiting Michael’s name. “Since your energy begins and ends with your tummy; you shall be known as Tum-Tum! ” he hands over a yellow mask to Tum-Tum. That’s when you realise your new masks match your Gi’s, you all smirk at each other and run to put on your Gi’s and masks.

Robert Hooks
Tumblr media
Robert Hooks (born Bobby Dean Hooks, April 18, 1937) is an American actor, producer, and activist. He is most recognizable to the public for his more than 100 roles in films, television, and stage. Most famously, Hooks, along with Douglas Turner Ward and Gerald S. Krone, founded The Negro Ensemble Company (NEC). The NEC is credited with the launch of the careers of many major black artists of all disciplines, while creating a body of performance literature over the last thirty years, providing the backbone of African-American theatrical classics. Additionally, Hooks is the sole founder of two significant black theatre companies: the D.C. Black Repertory Company, and New York's Group Theatre Workshop.
Biography
Early life
The youngest of five children, Hooks was born in Foggy Bottom, Washington, D.C. to Mae Bertha (née Ward), a seamstress, and Edward Hooks who had moved from Rocky Mount, North Carolina with their four other children, Bernice, Caroleigh, Charles Edward "Charlie", and James Walter "Jimmy". Named Bobby Dean Hooks at birth, Robert was their first child born "up-north" and the first to be born in a hospital. His father, Edward, died in a work accident on the railroad in 1939.
Hooks attended Stevens Elementary School. In 1945, at the insistence of his sister Bernice who was doing community arts outreach for youngsters at Francis Junior High School, he performed the lead in his first play, The Pirates of Penzance, at the age of nine. From the ages of 6 to 12, Bobby Dean journeyed with his siblings to Lucama, North Carolina to work the tobacco fields for his uncle's sharecropping farm as a way to help earn money for the coming school year in D.C.
In 1954, just as Brown vs. Board of Education was being implemented in the north, he moved to Philadelphia to be with his mother, her second husband, and his half-sister, Safia Abdullah (née Sharon Dickerson). Hooks experienced his first integrated school experience at West Philadelphia High School. Hooks soon joined the drama club and began acting in plays by William Shakespeare and Samuel Beckett. He was graduated in 1956, passing on a scholarship to Temple University in order to pursue a career as a stage actor at the Bessie V. Hicks School of Theatre (alongside Charles Dierkop and Bruce Dern, with whom he second-acted plays doing their pre-Broadway tryouts in Philadelphia) while working at Browning King, a men's tailor shop at Fourteenth and Chestnut streets.
Career
Having trained at the Bessie V. Smith School of Theatre in Philadelphia, and after seeing A Raisin in the Sun in its Philadelphia tryout in February 1959, Hooks moved to New York to pursue acting. In April 1960, as Bobby Dean Hooks, he made his Broadway debut in A Raisin in the Sun replacing Louis Gossett, Jr. who would be doing the film version. He then continued to do its national tour. He then stepped into the Broadway production of A Taste of Honey, replacing Billy Dee Williams; then repeating the same national tour trajectory as he had done for "Raisin..." the previous year. In early 1962 he next appeared as the lead in Jean Genet's The Blacks, replacing James Earl Jones as the male lead, leaving briefly that same year to appear on Broadway again in Tiger, Tiger, Burning Bright before stepping back into the lead role in The Blacks in 1963. He then returned to Broadway, first in Ballad for Bimshire and then in the short-lived 1964 David Merrick revival of The Milk Train Doesn't Stop Here Any More (as a character created by Tennessee Williams for this revival) and starring Tallulah Bankhead and Tab Hunter in his only stage performance. Immediately thereafter, in March 24, 1964 he originated the role of Clay in Amiri Baraka's Dutchman. With this play, on the advice of Roscoe Lee Brown, Hooks became known as, Robert Hooks. He also originated roles on the New York stage in Where's Daddy? for which he won the Theatre World Award and he was nominated for Best Male Lead in a Musical for Hallelujah Baby while he was simultaneously starring in David Susskind's N.Y.P.D.—the first African American lead on a television drama.
In 1968 Hooks was the host of the new public affairs television program, Like It Is.
Hooks was nominated for a Tony for his lead role in the musical, Hallelujah, Baby!, has received both the Pioneer Award and the NAACP Image Award for Lifetime Achievement, and has been inducted into the Black Filmmakers Hall of Fame. He also won an Emmy for his PBS special, Voices of Our People.
Significant roles for which Hooks is known include Reeve Scott in Hurry Sundown (1967), Mr. T. in the blaxploitation film Trouble Man (1972), grandpa Gene Donovan in the comedy Seventeen Again (2000), and Fleet Admiral Morrow in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984). He also appeared on television in an episode of the NBC crime drama series The Eddie Capra Mysteries in 1978 and portrayed Doctor Walcott in the 1980s television series Dynasty.
Activism
Arts and Culture
In 1964, as a result of a speaking engagement at the Chelsea Civil Rights Committee (then connected to the Hudson Guild Settlement House) he founded The Group Theatre Workshop (GTW), a tuition-free environment for disadvantaged urban teens who expressed a desire to explore acting. Among the instructors were Barbara Ann Teer, Frances Foster, Hal DeWindt, Lonne Elder III, and Ronnie Mack. Alumni include Antonio Fargas, Hattie Winston, and Daphne Maxwell Reid.
The Group Theatre Workshop was folded into the tuition-free training arm of the The Negro Ensemble Company (NEC) founded in 1967 with Douglas Turner Ward and Gerald S. Krone with a $1.3 million grant from the Ford Foundation under the auspices of W. McNeil Lowry.
From 1969-1972, Hooks served as an original board member of Black Academy of Arts and Letters (BAAL) (located in New York) alongside C. Eric Lincoln, President; John O. Killens, Alvin F. Poussaint, and Charles White. Chartered by the State of New York, BAAL's mission was to bring together Black artists and scholars from around the world. Additional members included: Julian Adderley, Alvin Ailey, Margaret Walker, James Baldwin, Imamu Baraka, Romare Bearden, Harry Belafonte, Lerone Bennett, Arna Bontemps, Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee Davis, St. Clair Drake, Ernest Dunbar, Katherine Dunham, Lonne Elder III, Duke Ellington, Alex Haley, Ruth Inge Hardison, Vertis Hayes, Chester Himes, Lena Horne, Jacob Lawrence, Elma Lewis, Henry Lewis, Paule Marshall, Donald McKayle, Arthur Mitchell, Frederick O’Neal, Gordon Parks, Sidney Poitier, Benjamin Quarles, Lloyd Richards, Lucille D. Roberts, and Nina Simone.
In response to the violence in his home town of Washington, D.C. in the wake of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s assassination, and aided by a small grant from the Eugene and Agnes E. Meyer Foundation, Hooks took a leave of absence from the Negro Ensemble Company to create The D.C. Black Repertory Company (DCBRC, 1970-1981). As Founder and Executive Director, the DCBRC was intended as a further exploration of the ability of the arts to create healing. The a capella group Sweet Honey in the Rock was created and developed within its workshop process.
The Inner Voices (Lorton Prison arts training program, 1971) proved to be a result of the beneficial effect of the DCBRC in the D.C. area. In response to a direct plea from an inmate, Rhozier "Roach" Brown, who was serving a life sentence in Lorton, Hooks' D.C. Black Repertory Company structured the first prison-based arts program in the United States. While it is the norm now, it was then a revolutionary attempt at rehabilitation through the arts. Eventually The Inner Voices performed more than 500 times in other prisons, including a Christmas special entitled, "Holidays, Hollowdays." Due to Roach's work, President Gerald Ford commuted his sentence on Christmas Day, 1975.
His relocation to the West Coast redirected Hooks' approach to parity in the arts with his involvement with The Bay Area Multicultural Arts Initiative (1988) as a board member and grant facilitator-judge. Funded by monies from a unique coalition made up of the San Francisco Foundation (a community foundation); Grants for the Arts of the San Francisco Hotel Tax Fund, and The National Endowment for the Arts, the function of this organization was the funding of deserving local multicultural arts organizations.
In 1992, Hooks co-founded (with writer Lonne Elder III) Arts in Action. Located in South Central Los Angeles, this was a film and television training center established to guide individuals who aspired to careers in film production. It formulated strategies and training for securing entry-level jobs. Courses included: career development workshops; pre-production and production for film and television; creative problem solving in production management; directing for stage and screen—principles and practices; also the craft of assistant directors, script supervisor, technicians, wardrobe, make-up, etc.
The Negro Ensemble Company of Los Angeles (NEC-LA) (1994-1997) was created because so many New York members and original members had relocated to the west coast. Hooks, as founder and executive director enlisted alumni from his New York Negro Ensemble Company to serve as board members: Denise Nicholas, Denzel Washington, James Earl Jones, Laurence Fishburne, Richard Roundtree, Samuel L. Jackson. NEC-LA's goal was to be a new and innovative multi-ethnic cultural project that strived to achieve the community effectiveness and professional success of its parent organization.
Personal life
Hooks is the father of actor, television and film director Kevin Hooks. He married Lorrie Gay Marlow (actress, author, artist) on June 15, 2008. Previously, he was married to Yvonne Hickman and Rosie Lee Hooks.

16 for rocky
giving your love interest a trinket before a “battle”
A/N: This is actually a (potential) future scene from my 3Ninjas fic Walking The Other Way’, so, light spoilers. Took me long enough, right?
Tumblr media
Whif, whif, whif.
Rocky repeatedly punched the bag in front of him, focusing on the rotation of his wrist to ensure the punch landed squarely. When he fatigued on one fist, he switched to the other and back again. All until he felt a warm chill run down his spine.
Usually, he enjoyed the feeling, knowing what it was coming from. This time, he felt a momentary flash of annoyance. Breathing out a heavy sigh, Rocky lowered his hands to his sides, turned, and started to take off his gloves.
“Don’t say it,” he said, addressing Riley before looking at her.
“Don’t say what?” She asked, following him with her eyes.
“That I’m making a mistake,” Rocky replied. “That it’s a bad idea to go up against Snyder.” He rolled his eyes at her statement of, “No need, yeah, you already did it for me.” And went back to unwrapping his hands. Boxing was never really his thing, but he needed something to get out his aggression, help him get some practice in, and take his mind off his upcoming…potential death. He glanced at her. “You know I have to do it.”
She tilted her head, studying him quietly. “He said he wanted revenge on ‘Sam Douglas’.”
“And I can’t let my dad take that fall.” Rocky lifted his chin. Took a deep breath through his nose. Knew he was going to have to explain himself at some point, since he had decided on what he was going to do. “It’d kill mom—”
“You think outliving her son wouldn’t do that?” Rocky moved to walk by her, but she reached out and pressed her hand to his chest, firmly pushing him backwards so he was forced to look at her. “Are you suicidal? Or just bloody insane? I get you’ve done ninja things like this before, but this is serious.”
“I noticed.”
She shook her head, dropped her hand from his chest. Defeated. In so few words she knew she wouldn’t change his mind. “What happened to the only thing you had to worry about being getting your homework in on time to graduate?”
Rocky managed the briefest of smiles. Graduation was the last of his worries. Nevertheless, he felt the pins and needles start in his fingers once more. Another panic attack he’d managed to stave off for the last few…days? Weeks? Everything made him worry now. A future he needed to decide on…and a future he may not even get if he faced off against Snyder.
“You can worry about all that for me,” Rocky replied. He sat down on the bench and grabbed a towel, mopping sweat off his forehead. He took in a deep breath, closing his eyes. Focused. Breathed. Focused harder when she sat next to him, close enough that her thigh pressed against his. “Someone’s gotta watch out for everyone else.”
“Yeah, but who’s going to watch out for you, Sam?” Her eyes bore into the side of his face. He studiously kept his gaze away from hers, knowing how easily he’d be swept away if he did. Just like always. “I guess, before this happens, I should say thank you.”
“For what?” he replied automatically, knowing her answer of, “For everything,” was coming seconds after. Smiled when he heard it. “I think I should be thanking you. For not trying to talk me out of this.”
The side of her mouth turned up into her smirk-smile. “Would I have been able to?” She gently nudged him with her shoulder.
He smiled. “No.”
“Should I threaten to beat you up then? Kidnap you? I can tie a mean knot but…” Her gaze swept over him. “Something tells me you’d break out of it too easily,” she teased saucily. “Which is no fun, by the way.”
Silence stretched between them. Rocky took in another deep breath, a different thought coming to mind. He leaned over to his bag and reached inside. His fingers clamped around the brim of it hat, which he pulled out and held toward her. “Can you hold this for me?”
Riley eyed it for a minute before taking it in her hand. She dropped her hand to her side, curling her fingers around his hat protectively. Almost as if it were supposed to be curling around his hand. “Your mind’s really made up then, yeah?”
His blue eyes locked directly on hers. “Wouldn’t you do the same thing…if it were your family?”
She pressed her lips together, looking away. Rocky knew she’d do the same, knew before he even asked the question. Whether it was the ‘eldest child’ role they were both put in, or just the sheer sense of protectiveness she felt for everyone in her life, he knew she would make the same decision. Because she’d made a similar one before.
Not to the same extent, but with the same motivations.
And, if he were being honest, it was easier for him to make that decision than ask her out to the prom. He was probably the only person in the world who had that problem; facing certain death enough times before had made him so de-sensitized that he wouldn’t even entertain the thought of losing.
“Rocky?”
“Hm.” He finally looked at her.
She looked back at him, the smile had fallen from her face. “If you die, I’ll fucking kill you.”

World's Fastest Property Price Surge Since Financial Crisis Sparks Bidding Wars

World's Fastest Property Price Surge Since Financial Crisis Sparks Bidding Wars
Tumblr media
Around the world, property markets are going bananas.
From the U.S. to the U.K. to China, housing is riding an extended boom. Global valuations are soaring at the fastest pace since 2006, according to Knight Frank, with annual price increases in double digits. Frothy markets are flashing the kind of bubble warnings that haven’t been seen since the run up to the financial crisis, a Bloomberg Economics analysis shows.
On the ground, outrageous stories are rife, with desperate buyers promising to name their first-born after sellers and derelict buildings selling for mansion prices.
Tumblr media

The drivers for the frenzy are remarkably consistent: cheap mortgages, a post-pandemic desire for more space, newly remote workers taking city cash to regional locations — and, crucially, a pervasive fear that if you don’t buy now you may never be able to.
As prices mount, so do the risks for both individuals and society. Even without an outright crash, big mortgages mean borrowers are vulnerable if interest rates rise, have less disposable income to spend in the wider economy and are more likely to retire in debt. For younger people, buying property becomes increasingly difficult, further widening intergenerational inequality.
While regulators are starting to get nervous, there are few signs of meaningful action in most countries. They expect the market will start to cool on its own, arguing that a decade-long focus on higher lending standards combined with the prospect of low interest rates for an extended period means there is no obvious trigger for a crash. Much of the activity is also being driven by owner-occupiers rather than investors, who typically don’t all head for the door at once if prices start to drop.
So for now, expect the wild stories to keep coming. Here are a few of the most startling ones we’ve come across.
Canada
As a real estate agent, Kristin Cripps knew the market was hot in Barrie. Prices in the fast-growing city about an hour and a half’s drive north of Toronto have been pushed skyward as buyers hunt for larger homes or vacation properties on scenic Lake Simcoe.
Yet nothing prepared her for selling her one-bedroom vacation home. It’s not a remarkable property—Cripps says it looks like “a small box” from the outside—but within 24 hours of listing, 192 showings had been booked. And that was only the start.

Throughout the following three days, bidders and agents kept showing up without an appointment, tramping through the snow to bang on the door while Cripps conducted virtual viewings inside.
The property’s narrow driveway became so congested, no fewer than six cars ended up in a ditch and needed to be towed out. At the height of the bidding war, Cripps estimates she was getting about 75 emails every 20 minutes, and didn’t sleep more than two or three hours a night as she tried to keep up with all the inquiries. In the end she received 71 offers. The property, listed for C$399,000 ($328,665), sold for almost twice that sum — C$777,777.
“You know when you see videos of Black Friday and everyone rushes in and they’re grabbing stuff and they’re having fights in the store and pulling people’s hair and there’s security and they’re grabbing people? That’s what it felt like,” Cripps said.
“Everyone was just so hot and bothered to get a property.”
Australia
It didn’t have a kitchen or a toilet or power, let alone flooring or paint. Yet the semi-derelict home about seven kilometers (4.4 miles) south of Sydney’s city center sold anyway—for A$4.7 million ($3.5 million), after a heated bidding war.
It’s just one more jaw-dropping sale in the harborside city, where more than half the houses sold this year fetched at least A$1 million and quarterly gains to May were the highest in more than 30 years. House prices rose by A$1,263 a day in May.

“I’ve been involved in this industry 25 years and seen nothing like it,” selling agent Joe Recep of NG Farah Real Estate said. “We had 30,000 enquiries on the property in four weeks—from UAE [United Arab Emirates], Dubai, America, New Zealand and all the Asian countries.”
It’s the top end of the market that’s really motoring. Cashed-up buyers returning from overseas and wealthy locals kept in the country by Australia’s closed borders are prepared to pay eye-watering amounts for a desirable lifestyle.

D’Leanne Lewis, a principal at real estate agency Laing+Simmons in the tony eastern suburb of Double Bay, sold homes worth a record A$60 million in a single day in May—more than she had ever previously sold in a month.
Among the five houses Lewis sold on her banner day was an eight-bedroom, nine-bathroom property in Bellevue Hill, an expensive area in the city’s east. It was snapped up pre-auction for $25 million—almost 40% above its advertised price—and more than triple the $7 million it sold for just five years ago. While palatial, it doesn’t have the waterfront views or access you’d normally expect in Sydney at that price.
“It’s crazy but does make sense when you think about it,” says Lewis. “Being locked down in a place like Sydney does not feel so dismal when you compare it to the rest of the world. People are looking for a safe haven.”
U.S.
In the wealthy enclave of Greenwich, Connecticut, you can’t even bank on being able to see a property before you put in an offer.
Shut out of appointments to view a just-listed $1.55 million house, one set of homebuyers decided to make a cash offer above asking price anyway. Their only condition was to be allowed into the house once before signing the contract.
“It was accepted as the highest and best bid, and they’d never been in the house,” said Mark Pruner, a broker with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices in Greenwich. “There were all these other people lined up for appointments in 15-minute intervals for two days.”
New York’s Divided Property Market
Prices in Manhattan keep falling as bidding wars erupt in the outer boroughs.

Tumblr media
U.S. home prices jumped the most in 30 years in April, with even more dramatic increases in many suburban and rural areas. At the peak of the pandemic, Greenwich attracted exiles from New York City — and they’ve kept coming ever since. Signed contracts for single-family homes more than tripled in May from a year earlier to 165, according to appraiser Miller Samuel Inc. and brokerage Douglas Elliman Real Estate. And that’s after a first quarter when the median price of home sales surged 31% to $2.24 million.
In Manhattan, sales have picked up in recent months too, but that’s largely thanks to the prospect of discounted prices. By contrast, buyers pushing deep into the outer boroughs in search of more spacious homes are facing bidding wars.
Things are even hotter in more remote areas of the U.S. Take Boise, Idaho, a picturesque city of roughly 225,000 set against the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. An influx of buyers from California and other more expensive states has sent the market wild: Prices at the start of June were up 42% from a year earlier, according to brokerage Redfin. In April, eight in 10 offers made by its customers faced bidding wars.

Desperate buyers are doing whatever they can to secure a deal — including promising not to actually move in. Shauna Pendleton, a local Redfin broker, said one vendor negotiated the right to stay in the property for five months on a peppercorn rent until their new home was built.
“Sellers know they’ve got power in this market, they know they hold the cards and that they pretty much make the rules,” Pendleton said.
U.K.
Buying a U.K. property right now is nerve-jangling. Almost a quarter of homes sell within a week, according to estate agents Hamptons International, many before they even hit the property portals.
The intense competition is leaving would-be-buyers like Alyson Nash, 63, and her husband out in the cold. They sold their family farmhouse last year and moved into rented accommodation so they could hunt commitment-free for a property near Guildford, a commuter hub in England’s southeast.
Tumblr media

Eight months later, after making offers for three homes at their asking prices of at least 2.5 million pounds ($3.5 million), they’re no closer.
“I had never in my life anticipated it being this difficult,” Nash said. “There’s very little on the market and what there is, is being chased down by too many people.”
U.K. House Prices Are Rising Faster Outside London

The booming market has led to the resurgence of a practice known as gazumping. Property deals in the U.K. aren’t legally binding until contracts are formally exchanged, which can take months after an offer has been accepted—particularly when mortgage lenders and lawyers are struggling with high volumes.
At any point in this period sellers can accept a different offer. That’s what happened to Charlotte Howard, 46, in February. Four months later, as glacial proceedings on another property left her terrified of being gazumped again, she found herself contacting the seller on Facebook to reassure them of her interest.
“I’m feeling just a bit broken and a bit bruised,” Howard said. “Things can go wrong still.”
Fortunately for Howard, she and the seller exchanged on June 11th.
China
Reining in property speculation is a key objective of the Chinese government. But even they are struggling. While in much of the world the pandemic spurred a dash to the suburbs and beyond, buyers in China piled into top-tier cities where the best jobs and schools can still be found.
Tumblr media
New apartments under construction in Shenzhen, where prices are rising faster than anywhere else in China.
Photographer: Yan Cong/Bloomberg
Existing home prices in those cities rose 10.8% in the year to May, despite crackdowns on loopholes such as fake divorces, designed to bypass rules on how many properties a family can own.
In the tech hub of Shenzhen, an apartment costs 43.5 times a resident’s average salary, according to the research institute of real estate firm E-House (China) Enterprise Holdings Ltd. That’s not far behind Hong Kong, the world’s least affordable city. With Shenzhen prices rising faster than anywhere else in China, the list of obstacles facing would-be buyers just keeps getting longer—and more arbitrary.
China’s Home Price Gains Slow, But Don’t Stop
Increases continue despite tough cooling measures

Tumblr media
At one new development in the city’s west, interested parties had to temporarily transfer 1 million yuan ($157,000) and upload personal credit reports before they could even make a bid.
Many of those who managed to do so—not easy, with queues of bidders snaking around the block at bank closing time—still didn’t even get their offers considered.
Under pressure from the local housing regulator to prioritize residents, local developer Coaster Group decided to vet applicants on how long they’d paid taxes in the city. The 2,114 successful applications all had more than 23 years of tax records.
That meant renewed disappointment for many, including Jerry Huang, 29,  who has 14 years of Shenzhen tax history. It’s the third time that non-monetary requirements have prevented him from even making a bid.
“It looks like I have to shelve the purchase plan for a long time,” Huang said. “There are so many people competing I’m not sure I have a winning chance.”

United Artists y James Bond, una larga amistad
Tumblr media
Entertainment from Transamerica Coorporation”.
Tumblr media

Feb 5, 1919 - United Artists created
"By 1919, Charlie Chaplin, Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks and D.W. Griffith were all heavyweights in the rapidly growing motion-picture industry. Chaplin was a British actor and former vaudeville performer whose “Little Tramp” persona had made him one of the biggest stars of silent film. Pickford, silent film’s favorite ingenue, and Fairbanks, her leading man on-screen and off, were equally familiar to American audiences, and Griffith’s controversial feature Birth of a Nation (1915) had become Hollywood’s first blockbuster, establishing the director as a pioneer in filmmaking techniques. All four, however, were seeking to gain more financial and artistic control over producing and distributing their films. On February 5, 1919, they joined forces to create their own film studio, which they called the United Artists Corporation.
United Artists quickly gained prestige in Hollywood, thanks to the success of the films of its stars, notably Chaplin’s The Gold Rush (1925), as well as the work of actors such as Buster Keaton, Rudolph Valentino and Gloria Swanson. Chaplin directed UA films as well as acted in them, and Pickford concentrated on producing after she retired from acting in the 1930s. With the rise of sound during that decade, UA was helped by the talents (and bankrolls) of veteran producers like Joseph Schenck, Samuel Goldwyn, Howard Hughes and Alexander Korda. The corporation began to struggle financially in the 1940s, however, and in 1951 the production studio was sold and UA became only a financing and distributing facility.
By the mid-1950s, all of the original partners had sold their shares of the company, but UA had begun to thrive again, releasing such films as The African Queen (1951), High Noon (1952), Witness for the Prosecution (1957), Some Like It Hot (1959), The Apartment and The Magnificent Seven (both 1960) and West Side Story (1961). In addition, the company was responsible for the James Bond and Pink Panther film franchises. UA went public in 1957 and became a subsidiary of the TransAmerica Corporation a decade later.
UA films garnered a slew of Best Picture Academy Awards over the course of the 1970s, for Midnight Cowboy (1969), One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (1975), Rocky (1976) and Annie Hall (1977). Soon after that, however, five top executives left the company in a disagreement and formed the Warner Brothers-backed Orion Pictures. UA sustained an even more devastating blow in 1980, when it released the big-budget flop Heaven’s Gate, directed by Michael Cimino. Two years in the making and way over budget, the film earned less than $4 million at the U.S. box office. After that debacle, UA struggled throughout the 1980s. In 1981, MGM bought the company, merging with it in 1983 to become MGM/UA Entertainment. In a highlight of those relatively dark years, UA did release another Best Picture winner, Rain Man, in 1988.
In 1992, the French bank Credit Lyonnais acquired the corporation and changed its name back to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc., abandoning the United Artists name altogether. The James Bond and Pink Panther franchises were revived, with varying degrees of success. MGM changed hands and was reorganized repeatedly over the next decade and a half, during which UA was repositioned as a boutique producer of smaller, so-called “art house” films such as Bowling for Columbine (2002), Hotel Rwanda (2005) and Capote (2006). In November of 2006, MGM gave the actor/producer Tom Cruise (star of Rain Man) and his production partner, Paula Wagner, control over the United Artists production slate, announcing the decision as a “reintroduction” of the UA brand in the spirit of its founders. Cruise and Wagner, whose former deal with Paramount Pictures ended amid reported acrimony earlier in 2006, released their first co-production with UA, Lions for Lambs, in 2007."
