Propaganda
Jane Russell (The Outlaw, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes)— I first saw Gentlemen Prefer Blondes when I was 12 and the scene where she performs Ain’t There Anyone Here For Love made me realize I’m a lesbian. I hadn’t watched it in almost a decade (because she’s so beautiful it’s like looking into the sun) and I completely forgot that in that scene she’s surrounded by buff men in tight, nude shorts.
Savitri (Mayabazar, Devadasu)—Her smile is sooo contagious, she was on a comemorative stamp in 2011, she made films in both tâmil and telugu, she's got such soulful eyes just look at them
This is round 2 of the tournament. All other polls in this bracket can be found here. Please reblog with further support of your beloved hot sexy vintage woman.

Jane Russell:
Tumblr media
Maybe it's tempting to think of her as Marylin's second banana, but honestly? I think she's the one with a little more Zhush.
Tumblr media
Did someone say sexual magnetism
I assume she's been submitted already, I just want the propaganda to include the empirically confirmed fact that images of her in The Outlaw have the power to rewire teenage girl brains. It's true I was there I lived it
Tumblr media
im love her your honor
God what a tiger. Those eyes were truly magnetic.
Tumblr media
She literally got a major motion picture delayed for two years for being too va va voom in it

(Yamraj had already granted two of Savitri's wishes as a reward for her dedication, apart from his condition to not grant Satyavaan's revival as her wish. Tired of her still following him, he turns to her.)
Yamraj: Hey would you stop doing that?
Savitri: Doing what?
Yamraj: Following me?
Savitri: You think I will?
Yamraj: .....Touche. Look... I know this is hard for you but I can't possibly return your husband's life.
Savitri: Oh that's okay I'll just follow you to the Afterlife then.
Yamraj: (sighs) Fine. One more wish. Last one. And then you leave me alone. Shoot.
Savitri: You know they were wrong about you being a prat. You're actually pretty generous.
Yamraj: Wait what-
Savitri: So here's my third wish...
Yamraj: Wait who were wrong about-
Savitri: ...I want to bear a hundred children with my husband.
Yamraj: Tathastu. Now get off my back. (Turns around to keep walking but then halts.)
Savitri: (smirks)
Yamraj:
Yamraj: Shit.

one new fact i have discovered while reading the notes for mahabharata by john d. smith is that there is a short opera titled savitri based on a story within the text! nobody told me about this!!
i haven’t watched it yet but that is amazing because i have often wondered what it would be like if south asian stories and legends were translated into the western medium of opera and now here’s what that looks like. it also correlates to my original characters (taj and phobos) as they are an interracial couple who have had to defeat forces akin to death to come together so having an indian story told through opera is not only a wonderful mix of cultures but allows for me to imagine animatics of my ocs for the opera itself.
we need more of this!! personally i’m not that interested in opera but it would be interesting to see other south asian legends, or other cultural stories in general, being presented in this way. i know that sometimes people don’t like it when things are westernized or turned into something that is palatable for western audiences but imagine if someone took the time and effort to create something that blends both worlds beautifully so it reflects both cultures in an authentic way. imagine an opera that reveres the original concept while interpreting it into something new. i also know i can’t speak because i am not a hindu who knows these stories by heart and understand the beliefs associated with them, and i hope my views come across as hopeful if anything, so if this doesn’t make sense, please do correct me.
so yes.
there’s an opera about savitri and satyavan created by gustav holst.

it’s def not perfect bc i’ve never actually tried colorizing black and white pics before but yk it's a learning curve. obviously original pic (on left) is of savitramma in the telugu movie gundamma katha (1962), and I used the colorized version of mayabazar as references for things like skin tone and stuff but yeah.

5 Telugu movies that deserve more attention and praise
There was a time when I marinated with thoughts about media of my mother tongue. Tollywood is often known to be dramatic, illogical and sexist. But in my short years of curating talent for my own experiences, I've noticed that the real cream of talent (storytelling, action, music) is the movies that no one talks about because they're not trendy or because there aren't many supporters.
But now times have changed. The audience has evolved collectively and I, more loud about my interests. I present to you a list of the Telugu movies that deserve more praise but don't ask/promote because they're humble or true to themselves.
1.
Tumblr media
Anand (2004)
Genre: Romance
Rating: 3.5 / 5
Story: Roopa is young when she loses her parents and younger brother to an accident. Anand is the son of the man who caused the accident. I won't spoil anything more because this deserves a fresh perspective to watch the first time around. If you watch it more than once, I do not blame you.
Why must you watch Anand: Anand is Sekhar Kammula's second project (the first being Dollar Dreams) and he shows a surprising amount of maturity in his writing and taking. He trusts his audience to know what he's saying and sticks to realistic characters. There is no bichda pyaar or pointless drama. Everything is for a reason whether you catch it in the first watch or not. Roopa and Anand are like the women and men you see and are irl. They make mistakes and learn along the way. The happy ending is well deserved.
Why must you watch Anand, except it's just about The Music: KM Radha Krishnan has a way with tunes. Every single song from Anand's album is a HIT. If Teluguvallu didn't watch the movie, they at least loved the songs. Many people (including me) knew about Anand for its music. Just... chef's kiss.
What I didn't like/thought could improve: The editing of scenes is choppy in few scenes.
Where can I watch Anand: Disney Hotstar (with subtitles I think) or youtube (no subtitles)
2.
Tumblr media
Godavari (2008)
Genre: Romance, Slice of Life
Rating: 4 / 5
Story: Fed up with her parent's admonishments about her failing boutique and miffed about being rejected by a man for marriage, Sita goes alone on a cruise along the river of Godavari. Aboard the native cruise (also titled 'Godavari'), she meets Ram, an honest young man with a penchant for public service and dreams of becoming an earnest politician. Sita falls in love with Ram but feels miffed that he still has feelings for Raaji.
Why must you watch Godavari: For Teluguvallu who haven't been along Godavari river or are living abroad and never got to experience pure Andhra Pradesh way of things, Godavari is like a scenic handbook. The characters and their troubles are realistic and the movie is rich in parallels. Ram is the true embodiment of a gentleman or 'Lord Rama' and Sita is the relatable struggling artist who's boisterous yet thoughtful in her own way. And the music....if you're a telugite, then it's a festival.
What I didn't like/thought could improve: The editing, again, is choppy in some places.
Where can I watch Godavari: ZEE5
3.
Tumblr media
Malli Malli Idi Rani Roju (2015)
Genre: Romance
Rating: 3 / 5
Story: Raja Ram is an aspiring athlete who falls in love with a woman in a burqa, Nazeera. Nazeera loves Raja Ram too but keeps her identity as the Girl in the Burqa a secret while getting closer to him as a music student of his mother's. The day he gets to know that Nazeera is the music student, something drastic happens which pushes him away from Nazeera who is forced to leave India by her father's orders. Years later, Nazeera enters a bet with her daughter to show her what real love is and takes her to India to show Raja Ram, who is now successful and still holds Nazeera in his heart.
Why must you watch MMIRR: The dialogues are very deep and the writing shows a bit more maturity than one would expect. Classic misunderstanding ensue but this story is the tale of faith, fidelity and patience for love. Nitya Menon shines.
Where can I watch MMIRR: Disney Hotstar
4.
Tumblr media
Kshanam (2016)
Genre: Mystery, Thriller
Rating: 4 / 5
Story: Rishi, an NRI investment banker is beckoned to India by a call from his ex Shweta after years. She begs him to help her find her missing daughter who the world believes doesn't exist. What follows is a bone chilling chase to claw at shadows and unveil the secrets of the past.
Why must you watch Kshanam: (Ugh teluguvallu over here, pls look away if I simp for Adivi Sesh a bit too hard) Adivi Sesh, the actor who plays Rishi, also co-wrote this story. It was a low budget film made with approximately 20-30 crew members but excels in its storytelling and emotions. Kshanam is proof that budget is just a factor to storytelling, not the medium. There are no plot holes and everything is for a reason. All the facts are right in front of you and the plot twists are set up perfectly.
What I didn't like/could improve: The music could use some improvement.
Where can I watch Kshanam: Sun Nxt, MX Player (idk, but you HAVE to watch this, it's a must pls)
5.
Tumblr media
Mahanati (2018)
Genre: Biopic
Rating: 4.5 / 5
Story: Mahanati (titled Nadigaiyar Thilagam in Tamil) is a movie that follows the life of yesteryear star actor Savitri Ganeshan (Keerthy Suresh) known for her tragic fate in love yet shone bright as the sun in the film industry. A to-be-married reporter Madhuravani (Samantha Ruth Prabhu) is tagged with the job of writing a piece on a comatose Savitri Ganeshan. Though uninterested at first, Madhuravani is drawn into the maze of Savitri gaaru's life. Along with a photographer Anthony (Vijay Devarakonda), she explores the life of the golden years actress. The more she digs, the more she learns the lesson of her life.
Why must you watch Mahanati: It's a treat if you/your parents have grown up watching Savitri gaaru, it brings back old memories and the vintage feel. It is an emotional watch. Keerthy gives the best performance of her career. Flock over for Dulquer Salmaan, Samantha Ruth Prabhu, Vijay Devarakonda and cameos by surprising people.
Things I didn't like/could improve: The prosthetics weren't handled properly in some scenes (maybe it's because of the lighting ig).
Where can I watch Mahanati: Amazon Prime Video
These are some cherished pieces of art and I hope you'll like them. You need not agree or understand some mannerisms since they're native to Indian behaviour but I really hope you enjoy watching these. Film is becoming universal slowly, and let this be an effort to inspire interest in Telugu art. If you end up watching any of these movies and want a scene by scene desi explanation or want some context or any form of diction reference, ping me!

Heads up 7-Up
@winterandwords and @kaiusvnoir both tagged me in a heads up seven up, to share seven lines! They are from The Princess and The Pirate this time :3 since I got tagged twice and many more times in last lines, here’s a bunch!
“I was born a boy,” [Aguri] finally said.
Rakhee tilted eir head. Why did she sound so sad? Why was she looking away, like she was ashamed?
“All right,” e finally said.
Aguri looked back up again. “We… we don’t really have a term for that where I’m from. It must happen, but so rarely nobody’s bothered to come up with words for it. I didn’t know you didn’t have to be one or the other until about a year ago. I thought you had to be a boy or a girl. I didn’t realize you could be both. Or neither. Can you do that? Can you be both if you were only born one?”
Savitri’s hand fell away from Rakhee’s side when e scooted closer. She was carefully looking at the fire, doing her best to give the two some privacy.
“I think you can be anything you feel like, whatever you were born into,” Rakhee said. E bumped a gentle shoulder against Aguri’s. She startled, then laughed a little at her own jumpiness.
Aguri stuffed the last bite of bread into her mouth, and spoke muffled around it. “That’s why Captain’s taking me to Jannah. So they can make my body right. So I’m a girl on the outside and the inside. But… last year I started to wonder. Maybe I might be both.”
Rakhee ‘hmm’ed softly, carefully moving eir feet a little closer to the fire. “I think you could be. What’s in Jannah?”
“The Alchemists,” Aguri said. “I don’t know if it’s Magic, or science, or both. But it fixes things. It makes them how they’re supposed to be.”
Rakhee turned back toward Savitri when she pressed a small package of dried, salted fish against eir arm. E took it and popped one of the tiny cubes into eir mouth. E chewed thoughtfully, and when e swallowed, e said, “Well, if you are, the Alchemists will fix it, right?”
Aguri’s brow furrowed. “What do you mean?”
“I mean, you don’t go to the Alchemists and say, ‘make me a girl.’ You go to the Alchemists and say, ‘make me the truest, realest form of myself.’ Right? Alchemy breaks everything down into its purest form. So whatever the person, or the thing, is meant to be, deep down, that’s what happens. At least, that’s what Grandmother Alta always said.”
tagging @drippingmoon @bookish-galaxy @avocado-frog @magic-is-something-we-create and anyone else who wants to! :D

“I haven't seen much starring her (YET) but the scene of her in the Fontana di Trevi in La Dolce Vita is some of the most jealous I've ever been of Marcello Mastroianni maybe and that's saying a lot. Cinema history. Historical.”

Trying to use an AI to visualize scenes and people from the Mahabharata. It’s fun but a little harder than I thought it would be! The pictures are:
Yudhishthira and the yaksha (Yama/Dharmaraja)
Damayanti hears about Nala from a swan messenger
Karna without kavach and kundal
Savitri and Satyavan
