(I literally started going on a rant dwelling on Scary Monsters as a parallel to Diego's nurtured belief that offense is the best defense. It reflects on his(justified imo) misanthropic nature and simultaneous respect for animals' honesty with intentions and instinct. He's analytical and perceptive before he even gets his stand, but using the heightened senses to know his surroundings and read people's behaviours and subtle signs to me just shows how much he wants to ensure safety deep down and establish a sense of control. For his childhood that was shrouded in scarcity, the unknown in a way. Although he is a man that definitely values strategy, he bulldozes through his struggles with sheer willpower and brutal force. NQD 24 actually has an alternative version, which will be shared with our patreon supporters after the end of the season! It'll be really interesting to hear their thoughts on the differences between the two versions.

I also thought about potentially releasing the alt version of 24 to them at the same time as they got early access - in the end, though, I decided not to as I think it may give away too much about what happens in the next couple of episodes. This is part of the reason it was so substantially rewritten, but not the main reason, weirdly!

jojoday sent me back in my productivity. sbr announcement made me clench my cheeks in excitement. im gobbling up every single jjba x reader longfic on ao3. staying up past 3 in the morning like i did in high school gave me newfound determination to write fbbts. maybe even rewrite part of it. but that also means i Desperately want to write a dio x reader fic. why are there only 24 hours in a day. i need at least 37. Hey so you’re focused a lot on Valentine as a good dad, are you gonna change anything regarding Lucy’s interactions, especially if Scarlet is gonna be your oc’s mom? Like are you just rewriting those parts?

So this ask will come with a heavy warning because IYKYK

In regard to Lucy’s scenes it was a difficult thing to grapple with and some parts are still being debated and worked on as we speak. She does play a major role in the fic and her and Mary are closely related both on a literal level in the fic as well as symbolic. She also has the title of being my Fave Character Ever (as you can see from my blog) so obviously those scenes bring me no joy.

I’ve elected to keep the general idea of those scenes intact (mostly related to FV unfortunately they kinda need to be here :/ much as I’d love to nuke em) but I won’t go into heavy or explicit detail with those because the manga already does that, it will just be dealt with more appropriately.

They do play important parts to FV and Scarlet’s characters, which is their inherent hypocrisy and mindsets, so it had to remain especially because I didn’t want to “whitewash” them or make it all “gosh, FV has a family he’d never do bad things” (because the disconnect is the point).

So while there is a more ‘humane’ and even ‘positive’ portrayal of FV and Scarlet in lots of scenes in the fics (especially before the SBR), it’s not them being made into good guys. They suck, they’re staying villains, it’s just meant to be a more realistic and even painful experience of having to deal with the people/family you knew and the horrors they’ve done. They’re capable of being good on any given day just as they are of being bad.

But for more specific things regarding Lucy scenes, I’ll be answering in the cut below:

In the High Voltage arc (aka AU Diego) Lucy is not in the building, it’s actually Mary (and later HP), so AU Diego addresses Mary. No hurting Lucy here.

There’s really no interactions between Lucy and MT in my fic and I would’ve changed those ones to be more platonic and sweet because I do like MT (thanks bestie) and the parts are rather inconsequential so idgaf about changing that I’ll be very real.

The Scarlet one is most likely gonna be changed in that Lucy doesn’t need to do that weird shit in the park and simply has Mary help her in, and the strange stuff will be skipped over. This is the one that has bought me the most headaches I hate this entire section while planning it actually lmao.

Of course!!!!! another fic that i think might be too self-indulgent to post lol but I haven't even written most of those parts yet. Actually this fic has been a year in the making and yet I barely have 1k written for it. It's a half rewrite (?) of sbr (jjba part 7), half character study of two of the part's main-ish characters because I am a dinopants truther despite them barely having any interaction in canon.... but I can fix that. theoretically. I don't even have anything I feel worth it to add as an excerpt. This is probably the only WIP where I have an almost completed outline but there is barely any actual writing...... pain and suffering.

Right friends it’s musical analysis time:

Spirit box radio has yet again decided to have its (musical) theme echo the (literary) themes of the piece and I’m vibrating why is this music so good. It’s doing exaaactly what a theme should and connecting the dots so nicely and and It’s so fucking good. Ok so

We have, in yhe most recent episode (sbr 3.12, solitude) the idea of the arcane space collapsing (shocking I know but bear with me) and Samael says something to the tune of “I’m telling thousands of stories, so of course it’s hard to keep track of the edges (of them)”. And of course

This gets reflected in the music. Our outro theme (havent given the intro a proper listen yet) consists of two parts: a) reverbed to hell and back strings/synth and b) the punch to the gut muted xylophone? Bells? (We’ll get into this but I’m no musicologist) that ends the piece

So for the first part, we have a simple variation on the main sbr theme that has been well established since season 1. This is fine and not super interesting, bc most of it sits underneath the credits, but it helps to bridge the gap between the ideas of a radio staticky spirit box and the main theme. It’s quiet, a little haunting, and normal (for the most part). It’s not something you’re going to catch, and it’s not something you really need to catch. The important bit tho is the faux-normality of the theme, which causes us to think that (barring the plot of. The episode) things are more or less fine (which is bs but again not the point at this moment). It’s very much samaels perspective on how things should be going - reminiscent of the world that was, holding on to the echos of the past, but not interesting or particularly good in its own right. This sets up the interesting part tho bc:

Part b) the fuck you it’s time to flip that on it’s head now. So,, we get the main theme again, loud and clear, with no credits to distract us. Played on a xylophone (I think? Idk I was a strings player it sounds like it’s a padded mallet hitting something made of metal, which is then immediately dampened). The theme played here is a perfectly straight (again, surprising given the characters ;] tehe) 4/4 quarter note 2 bar phrase. That takes the rhythms we’re used to and says. Nah fuck that. It’s so jarring. Eight eighth notes that so beautifully capture and bastardize the theme we’re used to that make it feel so flat and uninteresting (which still being musically beautiful but it’s not time to talk about phrasing rn). This so perfectly encapsulates what’s happening in the plot. These eight notes are the story (the one we the listeners know all too well) being retold by samael in this arcane space: flat, hitting every beat exactly, what is supposed to happen, containing the things that should be joyous, and absolutely failing to do anything correctly. It’s like you told someone to rewrite Haydns C major to be played by a elementary school band. It’s “correct” but so far down the uncanny valley that it’s just. Wrong. And no phrasing or dynamics or instrumentation or anything could fix that.

Now it’s time to discuss the choice of instrument. I wrote above that the melody feels flat - and that’s (to me) mostly due to the choice to immediately dampen each note, separating it from the other notes around it. This kills most phrasing you could do with the measure (again, not all, bc it doesn’t sound like bong bong bong bong bong bong bong bong but that’s neither here nor there) and forces the listener to hear the notes as 8 distinct entities. It’s great it spectacular it makes the piece work so well and really adds to the analysis above but idk how to explain it

Okay poll is finished! Seems the consensus is no, which is the impression I got too. However, for you ‘maybe’ and ‘yes’ truthers, I see where you’re coming from. I think it really depends on how much of Diego we choose to read as Dio-like? If the assumption is that Diego and Johnny’s backstory is supposed to closely parallel Jonathan and Dio’s, then I can see how Nick’s accident could be taken as a plot of some sort on Diego’s part. However on the other hand, given that parallels and callbacks with SBR are fast and loose with their actual relevance, I can see Diego’s presence in the flashback being something that was just coincidental and nod to the original continuity. Like I said in my ‘does Johnny actually hate Diego’ analysis, I think Johnny likely associates Diego with the incident, but unlike Phantom Blood the majority of his trauma comes from his father, and not Dio / Diego.

Though there’s also the matter of Danny - was he truly roaming the grounds and just so happened to scurry in front of Black Rose? Or was it just another white mouse, and Johnny’s perception heavily colors how he remembers the accident? If it really was Danny, then that plays into SBR’s themes of karma and fate. But if it wasn’t Danny, then someone was perhaps trying to sabotage Nick - and that person very well could have been Diego. Or the third possibility: there was simply another white mouse on the grounds, Diego noticed it, and Johnny assumed it was Danny (which I think is the most popular reading).

So while it’s open to interpretation whether Diego was involved in Nick’s accident, and to what extent, it really really depends on your reading! If we chose to read Diego as a direct rewrite of Dio, perhaps conniving to take Nick’s spot in the next race, then the possibility of his involvement is high. But if we read Diego as another character entirely, who merely shares a lot of characteristics with Dio, but who is not necessarily totally filling Dio’s role in the story as instigator and villain, then his presence at the site of accident has more to do with thematic relevance and perhaps as a callback than anything we’re supposed to read into further.

As for me, during my first few reads I didn’t really consider that he had anything to do with Nick’s accident; but more recently as I’ve really been digging into Diego as a character (especially during my analysis of the text in the ‘is Diego as bad as dio’ post) I’ve become a bit more open to the possibility that Diego at the very least had something to do with it. For me, given what we know about Diego’s past and how he operates, I wouldn’t put it past him that he would try to sabotage Nick to make room for himself as the Joestar’s racer. However, I don’t think he would have planned on Nick actually dying; the possibility might have crossed his mind, but given Diego is a misanthrope that possibility might not have bothered him. But I can also see him not having anything to do with it at all, and maybe just using the situation to his advantage. Interpretation, interpretation.

Regardless, it’s a very interesting choice by Araki to have him in the flashback at all. I think how much significance we put on that choice influences our interpretation. Different ways of reading Diego in this scene can lead to vastly different interpretations of him as a character!

to answer your questions: i update on wattpad most frequently. mainly because i write my fics on wattpad itself (because google docs always kills my formatting :(( ) and ive just been on there the longest. immediately after ill post on ao3 and tumblr tends to be last bc of how annoying ive formatted my fics on here lolol.

also!! besides johnny, jodio is currently in my second favorite spot being his silly little self; he’s so funny to me but thats probably bc of his fanon personality, before jodio tho it was probably a tie between jolyne and josuk8 but it always fluctuated between them; i think i just have attachments to the parts that hadn’t been animated when i first started jojo tbh
