Some excerpts from Adv. Vrinda Grover's statement at the Supreme Court of India, as a part of the 15 petitions that were heard for the marriage equality bill. She presented arguments for the concept of a chosen family which was a more progressive stance on how families/unions could be defined by the constitution and it goes beyond just same-sex marriage. It could cover polyamory and recognition of queerplatonic intimacies between 2 or more individuals, and much more:

“During COVID, a study that was done on trans persons found that when trans persons due to lockdown and the nature of the disease, had to return to their natal families and their homes. Over there they faced violence. They faced conversion therapy which is prohibited. And that was actually an illustration of what would happen if other social formations of care and support did not exist. This is what has been described as an atypical family. This form of chosen family is recognized in our law; for instance, adoption.

Adoption is a form of chosen family. Today we recognize families and we conceptualize family as by blood, marriage or adoption."

"There is increasing legislative and judicial recognition of a person who may not necessarily be conjoined through marriage or conjugal intimacies. In relation to the advanced directive, every person who is not a minor shall have a right to make an advanced directive in writing specifying any of the following individual or individuals in order of precedents he wants to appoint as his nominated representatives.

Her statements were pleasantly surprising. Most of the earlier petitions chose to only focus on gay marriage and trans people having the right to marry, and I didn't expect any of the (star)lawyers/petitioners to go beyond that. But this. This is a sign of liberation. It reminds me a lot of the family code that granted marriage equality in Cuba. I love that we have some very progressive minds fighting this case.

Miniature Bull Terriers

Temperament:

- Upbeat, Mischievous, Comical, Fearless, “Terrier fire”

Size:

- Height: 10-14 in @ the shoulders

- Weight: 18-28 lbs

Life Expectancy:

- 11-14 yrs

- activity levels tend to slow down around 11-12 yrs

About:

- Almost exactly like the Bull Terrier

- Square, muscular, strong for their size

- Large, egg-shaped head and dark, triangular eyes

Nutrition:

- In order to not change a dog’s diet too fast, find out what your new puppies diet was at the breeder’s.

- For a day or two a puppy may not eat because of the new surrounding, any longer than that; contact a vet.

- Don’t leave food down for a puppy if it doesn’t clear it.

- If the puppy experiences any other symptoms, then contact a vet

- If not, the puppy is most likely ‘training the owner’, bull terriers tend to do this, don’t put the food back down and continue with feeding normally.                                                                                                

- Follow breeder/vet advice on portions; bull terriers are sensitive to becoming    overweight.

- Ask your breeder for a natural method feeding chart

- Bull terriers have very powerful jaws and can chew off and swallow pieces of bones which can cause blockages in the digestive system.

- Don’t give your mini bull terrier bones

- Raw hide chews should NEVER be given to bull terriers (including minis!)

- They can be swallowed and get stuck in the throat

Grooming        

- Minis have fast growing nails, regular trimming is needed

- Minis are prone to “eye boogers”, just use a damp clothe to wipe them away and then a dry cloth to dry whenever you spot these

- At home weekly ear checks, look for wax (use a cotton ball to gently remove any wax), or infection (redness, swelling, bad odors). If any signs of infection, contact a vet

- Regular teeth brushing and vet cleanings

- Regular baths (every three months, unless your mini plays in dirt or mud (which is not unlikely!) then use a bristle brush to remove dirt then bathe immediately.)

- Use a hypoallergenic shampoo, minis have very sensitive skin.

- Outside shedding season a weekly once-over with a soft brush or a hound glove is all that’s needed for a well groomed bull terrier!

- During the twice a year shedding season (spring and fall) a daily once-over is recommended.

Basic Brushing

You’ll need: a bristle brush, a fine-tooth comb, and a grooming glove

1. Use bristle brush, start at head and work down he dog’s body, ending with the hind flanks (the space between the hip and thigh) and the tail. Be gentle but thorough!

2. Use the comb, use long strokes to remove loose hair.

3. Use the grooming glove.

4. (Opt.) Spritz a little conditioning spray or rub on a bit of coconut oil

Exercise

- Mini bull terriers require enough exercise to keep good muscle tone.

- Preferably access to a yard but can live in a sizable apartment or condo.

- A moderate walk daily is needed after the 1 year point

-  NOT AN OUTSIDE DOG

- A “sudden lameness” can occur in puppies

- Puppies’ joints can’t handle the energy the puppy wants to exert

- Minimum exercise, no jumping up and down from heights, or sudden stops at high speeds for puppies

Training

- Minis will usually require a trainer with a firm hand and a gentle voice, with patience and a good sense of humor

- Clicker training is recommended

- Positive, light, and fun training that keeps the terrier’s attention is most effective

- Heavy socialization from 8-20 wks is essential, and starting training early is a good idea

- Canine Good Citizen programs are awesome!

Ask your breeder for:

- Health tests performed on sire and dam (father and mother)

- Results on heart and kidney issues, deafness, luxating patellas (a kneecap disorder), and primary lens luxation (dislocation of the eye lens) tests

- Kidney-Urine Analysis

- Opthalmologist Exam

- Cardiac Exam

- PLL DNA Test

- May have issues with glaucoma, lens luxation, and deafness

- Susceptible to kidney disease

The smile fell from my face as I spotted what was left of [redacted] bobbing away from me on the crimson waves.  I had done it. Gotten my revenge. Wholly and completely. So what was wrong with me? Why wasn’t I— My breathing quickened, my heart stuttering in my rapidly tightening chest. The pressure within me built, tautening until I thought it would break me on its own.  So I screamed.  It was like it was being ripped from my throat, from my very soul. I put everything I could think of into it. My lingering rage that not even the murders could have quenched. The grief over the girl I had been before all this. The hatred I could never fully name.  Until I was empty.  Spent.

My vision blurred as I squinted through the blueness surrounding me, suffocating me. Where was I? Had I not died?  Water filled my mouth as I opened it, spurring a coughing fit. Bubbles erupted before my face, and I pushed away from them, floating, drifting away. My hair bushed and billowed around me as I held…my breath? Could I do that now? Something dark and long and sinister writhed before me, snaking its way toward me in the darkening blueness. Had I survived the plunge only to be killed again? By this? One of the monsters from Pa’s old stories? But…wait…something accompanied the monster. A human. No, a fish? Both, somehow?  It—no, she, I could see that now—swam up to me, her hair like mine, swirling around her face and shoulders. There was something familiar in her air, something I could not place. Not until she brushed her hair back to look at me properly.  Ma.

When I stepped away, [the Diamo] cocked his head to the side, inspecting himself thoroughly.  “The belt?”  Oh right, of course.  Ducking my head in a nod, I hurried back to the wardrobe, grabbing the first coiled belt I could lay my hand on. [Geros] let out a long, clearly impatient sigh as I wrapped it around his waist and came around the front to tie it off in a limp bow. He reached up to preen his wavy hair into place as I returned to the wardrobe to grab a pair of his sandals. When I turned back, he was sitting on the edge of his bed, foot extended expectantly. So I knelt before him, slipping the first sandal on before weaving the straps around his calf.  “We’ll head straight to the inner courtyard today. I have quite a few criminals to judge today,” he said in a droll voice. He stood just as I finished tying off his second sandal, and I stuck close to him as he returned, inspecting himself in the mirror. He leaned closer, smoothing the mustache of his gray-peppered beard, then turned away, heading for the innermost door.  I followed two steps behind, closing the door to his chambers behind us before quickening my steps to catch up to him.

She shifted, sitting now instead of squatting beside me, her arm braced somewhere behind me, our shoulders barely touching. I picked a few more othima. “I wish we had gotten to look around some more. It seems like a really charming place.” Smiling, I arranged the blossoms between my fingers, pinching the stems to hold them in place. “What were you and Ma laughing about? When I was outside?”  “Oh, that.” She chuckled, and I looked up, slightly startled to find her face so close to mine. But she wasn’t looking at me. “She mentioned something about how you were never that eager to clean before, and I said that that hasn’t changed since you came to Katania.”  “Hey, I keep my side of our room clean.” “If you want to call it that, sure.”  The corner of her lips twitched up, her dimple appearing for a split second before her gaze flicked up to meet mine.  We were already close. So close. Yet I wanted to be closer still. To let myself get lost in the depths of her eyes. Her attention lowered for a second, the very tip of her tongue poking out to wet her lips. My heart stuttered as her eyes captured mine again.  What were we talking about?  She looked away with a small smile, making to stand. “We should hurry if we want to make it back before supper.”  I leaned toward her, missing the close proximity already. “Here,” I said, holding out the measly bundle of flowers to her.  Solera brushed the seat of her kapta off before she collected the othima from me, her fingers brushing against mine. “Thank you, Thala.”  Warmth washed over me that had nothing to do with the heat of the day.

The gap between the rock faces started to widen, an ever-brightening blue light welcoming us as we swam out into the open. My eyes widened and my mouth fell slightly open.  A courtyard of a spiraling mosaic of green, yellow, and gray splayed out before us, clumps of bright green algae clinging to the faded stones like moss. Gardens of swaying red and yellow-green sea flora stretched out around the sprawling, airy palace up ahead. Deteriorating statues of once-noble dragons flanked the curved staircase leading up into the palace, the one on the left holding my attention until Mitha called out a greeting and waved to a cluster of mermaids within the garden.  She didn’t stop to talk, however. Instead, she led me up into the dilapidated palace itself.  The walls, where they still remained, possessed some of the grandeur of the former hall. Faded murals depicting an age long past adorned them. The pointed, arched ceiling was so vast that I had to squint to make out even the slender beams stretching between the patchy roof. Time and water had eroded the faces, wings, and tails of the stately columns that had been carved to appear like the dragons of legend.  Broad arched windows sat between each of these, looking out over another courtyard, where deep reds and blues joined in the dizzyingly swirled mosaic. Another garden spilled out onto the courtyard, which was populated with many more mermaids, most of which were fawning over Kama. Her head was resting on the jagged edge of the courtyard, which dropped off abruptly into the deep sea. Her long dark body swayed lazily in the current until she rolled over on her side to let some of the mermaids pick off the barnacles stuck to her underbelly.  “Thala.” I started at the sound of my mother’s voice, so taken with the bewildering, wonderful sight before me that I had forgotten about Mitha sharing her face and voice. I tore my attention away from the spectacle, looking over at her. “Come. I’ll show you where we rest.”  She had to keep reminding me to follow her, as I constantly got distracted by the surrounding murals. Faded as they were, it was hard to make out the depictions. But, from what I could tell, it told the story of the dragons and their friendship with the humans—a story that barely persisted with the passage of time in Grea. I knew of it from tales Pa had brought back from other lands, but even then, my memory was fleeting.  I was about to ask Mitha about it when I turned to find that we had reached the doorway that dwarfed both Mitha and I, and she chuckled as I looked up at it in awe. “It had to be this large so the dragons would walk beside their humans.”  The courtyard filled with other mermaids and Kama laid to the right of us, and to the left, the garden. And beyond the garden, the thick strips of the algae forest danced in the current.
