I take a deep breath in and choke on it. Hit someone next to me in my haste to get up. He groans and starts coughing too. My throat burns, rejecting the pungent coppery taste in the air.

Covering my mouth, I look around. Browning walls, that might once have been a soft yellow. A low ceiling, something steadily drips out of one of the corners. One window, with broken glass and wilting leaves trying to grow through it. And a door, closed, across from us. This is not where I fell asleep.

I’m sitting on a hard surface, slightly elevated, that’s been covered by a blanket, it’s soft and looks clean. Out of place in this dingy room. The only light comes from the green-tinted sky outside the window. The only other person in the room is the guy next to me, who’s recovered enough to sit up. I spare him a glance, his eyes dart around the room, he doesn’t pose an immediate threat.

I stand and walk to the window, using my jacket to cover my nose and mouth. The world outside is an urban wasteland. Tall buildings covered in strange vegetation, jagged holes poked through their sleek edges. They look emty. A rock tumbles out of one of them, I don’t hear it land. Wispy grey clouds hang in the dirty green sky, they seem threadbare, unsure of where they should be drifting. Something flies through a cloud and it looks for a moment as if a piece of cloud is following it.

I use my elbow to push at the window, it gives with a metallic groan. A gust of warm air pours in and I have to blink away the sting in my eyes before peering downwards. We are, I estimate, eight stories up and below us is a dense system of buildings and streets, all appear uninhabited. Five skeletal-looking crows fight over scraps in the road.

“Do you hear that?”

I startle and look behind me. The man has stepped behind me, he’s found a pair of cracked glasses and looks through them over my shoulder. His grey T-shirt covers the bottom half of his face.

I listen. There’s a faint rustling of wind. A distant siren.

I look up at him, eyes wide.

Old fashioned Sawmill in Riverview ========================================== Included: 10 Objects to build an old fashioned sawmill After I started to make a millwheel for my game in February 2010 I thought I needed other objects, too. Thus I ended with 10 new objects which you can use to build a sawmill of former times. That's why I called the set Sawmill Construction Set (SCS). Here you can get package files of them in order to build lots of your own. See the picture. All objects are cloned from base game objects only. Some of the objects are intended to fit one to the other in a special way, but of course you also can use each object without the others. It depends on what you want to do. For better understanding (at least I hope so) I wrote a small advice you can download. I don't want to call it a tutorial. For other information see the pictures within the text. The most interesting object is the millwheel. It spins slowly (I hope it will) and can be used for every other type of water mill. Enjoy decorating your buildings with these objects if you like them! ------------ The lot itself was built with all EPs installed, without using any other content than EA-objects and those objects Riverview came with. If you don't like to build a lot use this one. But: It also contains the ten objects I made by myself, all cloned of base game objects only, including an animated millwheel. I called the collection of objects Sawmill Construction Set because I think it contains all you need for an old fashioned sawmill. The lot is set up as commission stocks with a lot size of 40x50. If you are interested in the objects, please read the text files I wrote, so I don't have to repeat all here and nobody is bored from the beginning. Enjoy the objects if you like them and build lots of your own! 1978 former industrial building converted to a home in Charleston, SC has 1bd, 1full & 2 .5bas, 1,892 sq ft, $1.49m.

Open the door, and this is what you see- the whole open floor plan. I love that wall by the stairs that lead to an unfinished 2nd level attic.

I love the look of a big elegant crystal chandelier with old exposed brick walls. I don't however, care for how they did the ceiling. It doesn't look finished.

A formal sitting room area is across from this family room area. It's a clever setup.

In this corner there's a banquette and 2 bistro tables.

Lovely shelving and the dining table are right outside the kitchen.

!/2 bath to the right of the dining area. This is lovely.

The kitchen is gigantic.

Custom gold hood over the stove.

Plus an additional wall of storage. Behind these pocket doors is the potential bedroom.

It's currently a workshop that will have to be converted to the bedroom. It's actually probably large enough to make two. I'm disappointed that such a pricey property that advertises one bedroom turns out to have an unfinished workshop that the buyer has to finish.

The 2nd 1/2 bath.

The large back yard has a partial patio, but it's also the parking area.

A designated parking space is in the back, but what if you wanted to park 2 cars? It's your property.

ONGOMGOMGOMG. (share thoughts. any n all. you know i need to know. PLEASE!)

HAHA sorry. anyway:

I didn’t really like it and I’m sad about it. ☹️ even though there were some interesting ideas and cool new characters, I was taken out of the story too much to fully enjoy them. it read to me like the laziest (most rushed? least edited?) yet most forced storytelling of the series, which sucks bc it’s supposedly the REAL backstory of my favorite character. but I just couldn’t shake my doubt while reading that this was what we and Katniss were missing all along. too many details (that I memorized by heart as a tween and have made everyone’s problem since) didn't match up, even with the card-stacking*. so I just don't believe this was always the intended ‘real’ story when it’s so hidden from the trilogy... imo, SC went back to it with a mission statement in mind after recent current events (and, more tellingly, after Ballad) and did her thing. which is fine, that's her right - it's just, when this whole book seems more like a writing workshop thought experiment than the intended backstory, I will treat it as such. bc as it stands, all the callbacks & connections & Everlark parallels in the world cannot replace Katniss & Peeta watching the highlight tape of his Games, Haymitch telling them what he did was “almost but not quite” as bad as them with the berries, Katniss finally understanding who he is in that moment, and Haymitch later admitting the loss of his loved ones were because of "that stunt [he] pulled with the forcefield" (which is. simply not true anymore with all of his stunts in and out of the arena). like say no more, that’s good enough for me! it’s what I prefer and what I find more compelling than what’s revealed/subverted in Sunrise. and tbh that discrepancy makes Sunrise unfaithful, at least in my eyes, for all it relies on references to the rest of the series. 

now, obviously I had mixed feelings about this prequel in the first place, and my concerns/reservations mounted with each excerpt, only to be confirmed now... but I did try, okay!?? haha I’d told you and several others privately that I really wanted to like this book and I was willing to set aside my gripes if it was good - but it had to actually be good! instead, the book was exactly what I was afraid it was going to be *and* suffered a drop in quality. I found the narration underwhelming, dumbed down and repetitive, and not evocative of Haymitch's voice. even things I thought there was NO WAY would actually happen and I was just being paranoid - but then they did, lmao. like, it was a letdown for me personally *and* it didn’t even do it well enough where I could at least respect it and oblige, lol

overall, it was just too off for me. by answering and explaining so much, it ended up taking away a lot of the trilogy's charm and intrigue - and did so in a way that left a bad taste in my mouth. it made me view Ballad in a more negative light, too, tbh. so I think going forward I’ll just consider it a weird spinoff that is secondary to the main/trilogy canon. 🤷🏻‍♀️

tbh, what guts me the most is what SC chose to do with Haymitch’s voice & character, where she watered him down to what he needed to be for this lesson & this plot. it’s frustrating that the dangerous, cunning, arrogant boy that Katniss sees in the highlight reel and can easily recognize in adult Haymitch is all an act. the character we thought we knew is not present here, sacrificed to make yet another point about propaganda, and that’s a crying shame. and his deterioration in the final chapters is so underwhelming (as are the death scenes 🫣) - I've read that same story countless times but told better by people who love the character as is and weren't on a time crunch for a movie deal, I guess.

Sunrise!Haymitch skews shockingly immature and moralistic and hates the idea of being a sarcastic, selfish “rascal." but since when are we calling surviving and fighting to get home in an unthinkable situation selfish? that’s now assumed in Sunrise’s logic, where instead having a ginormous alliance against the Careers with no exit plan (big ‘WHAT IF ALL THE TRIBUTES BANDED TOGETHER AND DIDN’T FIGHT?’ energy) is much smarter and nobler than going it alone and heading in one direction to get to the edge for no reason other than bc nobody had tried it before and trilogy!Haymitch, we know, is an out-of-box thinker & strategist. I know he & Ambert were operating under the notion that they were going to lose no matter what and had their own plans (which. hmm) but it was just so oddly accepted by the Newcomers, too, who had no such threat from Snow. they were so willing to be selfless martyrs and band together when they all know at the end of the day there can only be one survivor - which was heartening in a way, sure, but it almost seemed trite? and again, needlessly moralistic in an established world like Panem, where these things happen every year...? not even self-righteous (Katniss' words but with Haymitch's backing!) Peeta 'not a piece in their games' Mellark thought so narrowly. Idk. I might have to mull that one over more. but anyway, then Haymitch trying to rescue Maysilee is turned into a mini redemption arc in post, when all it was in the first place was a glimpse into his protective & caring nature underneath all the bravado, which was surely part of Katniss’ deepening understanding of him. but Sunrise wasn’t interested in exploring that, either, or even honoring it. okay

and I can’t get over how SC had to kind of retcon the final pages of Mockingjay to fit Haymitch’s epilogue into it, which didn’t help how it already rang so hollow for me, I hate to say. it’s not even done well, containing the most rushed, wrap-up-everything-before-the-deadline writing I’ve ever seen from SC (and it STILL doesn’t read like Haymitch’s voice to me :/). some things can just be; they don’t need some big, loaded, tragic explanation. Haymitch can glibly call Katniss ‘sweetheart’ once, bc she’s been sullen & hostile to him and he is in fact sarcastic (the horror!), only for it to go on to become an actual term of endearment by the end - like, that’s lovely in and of itself. why weigh it down further? who asked for that? I know I didn’t. 

most insignificantly & pettily of all: geese do mate for life - as in monogamously, meaning they stay together until one of them dies. then, they mourn and find another mate. just putting that out there, lmao

*how tf was Haymitch able to kiss his token and set up a bomb and throw it over the edge and put his token back when we know he was convulsing from shock by the end? to where Silka was able to start staunching her wound as she waited for him to die? if him going into shock was taken from footage anytime after, the arena would've been quaking/on fire around him?? Idk fam. it just feels off.

Striking Scorpion (Prestige Class)

(That's right I'm doing Aspect Warrior Prestige Classes! I can't help myself, I love elves, and striking scorpions are just the coolest. Green elf ninjas with chainsaws!!

Anyway these are all going to be high-tech, with one or two original items to each concept because that's kinda what each Aspect Warrior is actually centered on. They're also going to be only five levels, because the idea of the Asuryani is that they're expected to, through their vast lifetimes, move through a number of different paths! Fun little integration.)

Striking scorpions are the Asuryani aspect warrior that centers on stealth, close combat, and ending their opponents in fast, violent strikes before they can even react. Of all aspect shrines, they are perhaps the most brutal and cruel, reveling in the hunt of prey they deem lesser.

Role: Striking scorpions are close-range fighters, among the most powerful of elfkind, but specialize in striking from cover and navigating dangerous terrain. Alignment: Most aspect shrines strictly oppose Chaos, but striking scorpions are an exception; they can be of any alignment, but tend towards evil. HD: d10

Prerequisites

Race: Must have the Elf subtype Stats: Strength 15 BAB: +5 Feats: Two-Weapon Fighting, Exotic Weapon Proficiency (Asuryani) Other: Must be inducted into a striking scorpion shrine.

Skills

A striking scorpion gets 4+int mod skills per level. A striking scorpion’s class skills are Acrobatics (Dex), Climb (Str), Knowledge (religion) (Int), Perception (Wis), Stealth (Dex), and Swim (Str)

Weapon and Armor Proficiencies

A striking scorpion is proficient with light and medium armor.

Scorpion Chainsword

All striking scorpions are given a scorpion chainsword, a divine weapon representing the wrath of elven gods. This blade is specially crafted for them; all other creatures treat it as having the broken condition, and it If the weapon already has the broken condition, it does not work at all for anyone else trying to use it. This starting weapon can only be sold for scrap (it’s worth 4d10 gp when sold). 

Scorpion’s Sting (Ex)

Striking scorpions are trained to make powerful, devastating strikes against surprised opponents or those trapped in unwieldy situations. His attacks deal extra damage against creatures denied their dexterity bonus or who are standing in difficult terrain that they cannot ignore. The extra damage is 1d6 at level 1, and increases to 2d6 at level 3. This ability otherwise functions as a rogue’s sneak attack. 

Deadly Ambush (Ex)

Striking scorpions are particularly adept at urban and jungle combat; at level 2, he ignores all difficult terrain and gets a +4 bonus to Acrobatics, Climb, and Stealth while in those environments. 

Shadow Jump (Sp)

Striking Scorpions of level 3 or higher may make a shadow jump as a level 4 Shadowdancer.

Improved Critical

At level 4, a striking scorpion gains Improved Critical as a bonus feat.

Mandible Strike (Ex)

A striking scorpion is trained to make fast, brutal ambush attacks, and to strike hard and cripple enemies as soon as possible. At level 4, a striking scorpion has attained the pinnacle of this form- the mandible strike. At the end of a charge attack, a striking scorpion gets an opportunity; they may either make an additional attack with a light melee weapon at -2 to attack instead of +2, or may make a trip or disarm combat maneuver, losing the +2 bonus to combat maneuvers at the end of the charge. 

Scorpion’s Claw

At level 5, a striking scorpion becomes an Exarch; a respected and feared member of their aspect shrine who has lost himself to the craft, and is gifted the sacred scorpion’s claw. This weapon is specially crafted for them; all other creatures treat it as having the broken condition, and it If the weapon already has the broken condition, it does not work at all for anyone else trying to use it. The hand wielding the claw cannot be used for manipulation at all, and the glove cannot be wielded two-handed. Scorpion’s claws deal incredible damage for a one-handed weapon, but incur a -2 penalty to attack. This penalty stacks with penalties for lack of proficiency.

James Garner Racing Was The Real Deal (A Quick Read)

In 1969, American Motors (AMC) signed a three-year partnership with Garner and his team at American International Racers to compete in the Baja 500.

They fielded a squad of specially modified Ramblers built for off-road racing. These 1969 SC/Ramblers were equipped with powerful 390-cubic-inch, 315 hp AMC V-8 engines.

AMC delivered ten brand-new SC/Ramblers to Garner's workshop, each boosted to an impressive 410 HP.

These machines were hitting speeds of 140 mph at 7,000 rpm in fourth gear! Eight Ramblers raced in the passenger-car category, while the other two were outfitted with four-wheel drive for the Experimental class.

The team dominated the event, with Bob Bondurant and Tony Murphy taking first place. Ramblers secured the 1st, 3rd, and 5th spots overall. AIR drivers Ed Orr and J.W. Wright finished in third place, and Don Simpson & Walker Evans drove the fifth-place Rambler.

Trails in the Sky the 3rd is so weird, though I'm not yet through with it. It feels like it was made from scraps left on the workshop floor after the FC/SC. All of the quality of life improvements just serve to condense the game to a point where there might as well not even be gameplay; the most compelling parts of the game are the little Where Are They Now epilogues for the cast. It feels disjointed and unnecessary and yet here I am, tooling around looking for the next memory fragment so I can see Tita's home life with her parents or have Joshua catch up with everyone he hasn't gotten to talk to, having been gone most of SC. The most common recurring character in the main story is Shinji Gilbert, of all people.

I guess at the end of the day it's a testament to what a complete experience Trails in the Sky FC/SC were that I'm struggling more and more to get through 3rd.

Unlike Cold Steel 1, the Sky series hasn't burned me out on JRPGs yet (I'm very on/off with them), so I do want to get through more of the Trails series while I can. I wonder if I should just skip to Azure or whatever the Crossbell arc is...

they were all, on some degree, just like their father. it was obvious in their mannerisms, their separate genius, and how they all tinkered with experiments- sometimes with the knowledge of others, sometimes not. it was knowing that, that gave marie a gut feeling and led her down to the workshop, an amused smile on her face as she spotted her brother knowing she was right, as well as pride that he was able to hide whatever it was he had been doing for so long.

OKAY SO WHAT HAPPENED WAS i was born a baltimore catholic and guess who else was born a baltimore catholic? jacksfilms. (i am not doxxing him, this is public information on his wikipedia and videos lol). and because all baltimore catholics know each other to some degree, i closely knew some of his close family members and as such watched his videos regularly for a hot minute. NOW. for years he's been making dumb little royalty free christmas songs every holiday season, and one of said royalty free christmas songs consists of just one repeated lyric: "jingle my bells, baby"

so camera cuts to me, a horny little freak obsessed with supercorp who has also been mentally workshopping how well christmas string lights could work as cuffs in a pinch (for unrelated reasons), and the second i hear this lyric one fateful day in december 2021 i'm like oh. this is so fucking kara danvers.

and thus this fic was born. the working title was/is "jingle your bells" and i fear that may be the finished title if i ever finish this work lol </3. it was initially intended to be a 2021 holiday gift to coffeeshiib [if you're reading this, hi, i hope you're doing well, friend :)] but alas, here we are.

Something, or rather someone, was messing up with Mary's magic tech. She could tell there was an entity looming around, someone unseen but definitely present. A ghostly being.

She sighed, as it seemed like her semi-regular communion with the tech gods she worked with would have to wait. She reached for a pair of goggles she designed to see beyond the light spectrum, into the ether.

She looked around until she spotted a young woman — a girl, really — and she waved at her. "Now I see you," she said as she picked up a 90s portable radio and started fiddling with the dial. "Speak so I can tune it to your voice," she instructed.

A ghost wouldn't be in a witch's workshop unless she had something to communicate. Mary was no medium in her own right; she needed her tech to make do.

certain songs (aka, indie band patrick): David, owner of the recently re-opened Perennial gallery in New York gets dragged by Stevie to a show where the indie band the Creek Waders are performing. He crosses paths with the frontman and guitarist, Patrick, and finds himself intrigued. Mutual pining, David being an idiot, discussions about queer art, Stevie ex machina, etc etc.

gather up the avenues: David and Patrick dated while in New York but broke up, now neither of them can stand to be in the city because of all the memories. Patrick drives back home to Canada, but ends up stopping in a small town with a ridiculous sign, while David flees to the place with the stupid name his dad bought him for his birthday when he was a kid. I think you can see where this is going.

come on, get higher, loosen my lips: five times alex and henry talk on the phone and one time they wake up together (workshopping this description lol). Actually hoping to finish and publish this in 2023 but we'll see how it goes.

I have a lot of other projects I'd like to finish but I'm not going to list them all here. We'll see how this year goes. I also love an event (clearly) so plan to participate in some of those as they come up (hopefully for both SC and RWRB).

MY WRITING MAKES IT SO OTHERS CAN FEEL SEEN: A QUEER PHENOMENOLOGICAL STUDY OF LGBTQ+ COLLEGE STUDENTS AFFECTIVE EXPERIENCES IN AN OUT-OF-SCHOOL POETRY WORKSHOP

Abstract

This dissertation explores the affective experiences of LGBTQ+ undergraduates in an out-of-school poetry workshop. Through the lens of queer and affect theories, the study asks the following research questions: 1) How does reading and writing poetry foster community in an LGBTQ+ out-of-school poetry workshop? (2) How can participation in an out-of-school poetry workshop with members who identify as LGBTQ+ engender a love of writing in queer students? (3) How do LGBTQ+ college students’ affective experiences manifest in a queer out-of-school poetry workshop? Using queer phenomenological methods (Ahmed, 2006) to engage with such data sources as audio and video class recordings, semi structured interviews, field notes, memos, and student writing, the study explores the way that two self-identified LGBTQ undergraduate students came to understand their writing and experiences in a queer out-of-school writing workshop space. Specifically, it engages with the ways young people interact with texts and writing prompts that center queer topics and issues, and how reorienting a space in which queer bodies and subjects are made visible can lead to increased engagement, empathy, and confidence in literacy skills
