MY WRITING MAKES IT SO OTHERS CAN FEEL SEEN: A QUEER PHENOMENOLOGICAL STUDY OF LGBTQ+ COLLEGE STUDENTS AFFECTIVE EXPERIENCES IN AN OUT-OF-SCHOOL POETRY WORKSHOP
A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY
Abstract
This dissertation explores the affective experiences of LGBTQ+ undergraduates in an out-of-school poetry workshop. Through the lens of queer and affect theories, the study asks the following research questions: 1) How does reading and writing poetry foster community in an LGBTQ+ out-of-school poetry workshop? (2) How can participation in an out-of-school poetry workshop with members who identify as LGBTQ+ engender a love of writing in queer students? (3) How do LGBTQ+ college students’ affective experiences manifest in a queer out-of-school poetry workshop? Using queer phenomenological methods (Ahmed, 2006) to engage with such data sources as audio and video class recordings, semi structured interviews, field notes, memos, and student writing, the study explores the way that two self-identified LGBTQ undergraduate students came to understand their writing and experiences in a queer out-of-school writing workshop space. Specifically, it engages with the ways young people interact with texts and writing prompts that center queer topics and issues, and how reorienting a space in which queer bodies and subjects are made visible can lead to increased engagement, empathy, and confidence in literacy skills

If you're wondering what this all is and means... it's nothing. It is and means literally nothing.
"But surely..." you may be thinking. No. These aren't real things, this is literally not anything. It's no more real than a $3 bill. From top to bottom, it's fake.

Ballroom dancing isn’t actually particularly queer coded in fact it plays more into tradition and has very clearly defined gendered roles associated with it - male leader - female - follower.
And that’s what’s interesting about it being the activity Eddie was signed up for by Helena, especially in relation to Eddie’s incoming queer arc. Eddie was forced to grow up too fast and to step into the role of ‘man of the house’ by Helena because Ramon was by all accounts an absent father - hero complex provides us with plenty of canon information about Eddie being pushed into a husband/father role at a very young age and being told to man up and not to cry etc - machismo in action.
Helena sending him to ballroom dancing classes is likely because it was a way of reinforcing those traditional gendered stereotypes held by wider society and particularly in Latinx culture that the Diaz’s are entrenched in.
It becomes an especially interesting choice if it’s something Helena did because as well as it reinforcing gender stereotypes, she could see that her son was queer and wanted a way of trying to push him towards girls/women - encouraging him into straightness by surrounding him with girls as generally classes are female dominated and away from activities that would have him surrounded by boys/men.
It’s not about ballroom dancing being queer it’s about trying to prevent him from being queer through the structure of ballroom dancing.
#of course Helena would think it worked as Eddie dated and married Shannon and got her pregnant - even if she didn’t like Shannon very much#eddie joining the army would reinforce the diaz parents thinking that it worked as would firefighting.#but Eddie moving to LA - where there is a large and vibrant queer community and culture - was not well received because Eddie was escaping#Helena’s control - her and Ramon were keeping him surrounded by gendered expectations whilst he was in Texas#but LA could undo all their work (which it has) and enable him to experience more liberal non traditionalist ways of thinking and being#Eddie has been unlearning all of the traditionalist teachings of his parents and breaking the cycle with how he’s raising Chris.#the last thing Helena had in her arsenal was her vitriol towards Shannon - which actually prevented Eddie from moving on from her after her#death because it has made Eddie double down on Shannon to protect her memory for Chris.#(there are obviously a lot of other things in connection with Shannon - this is just one aspect of her ghost still being very present)#I don’t even know if I’m making sense - sleep deprecation might be making me talk nonsense - but basically ballroom dancing is about#pushing straightness and winning trophies viewed as a sign of its success as a method of preventing queerness!#911 spoilers#911 meta#random thoughts I have when operating on little sleep!!#911 abc#eddie diaz#the queer Eddie narrative#buddie

Sometimes I'll be having a perfectly normal day and then get blindsided out of nowhere by the "Louisa May Alcott was definitely 100% a binary trans man and if you call her a woman or use she/her pronouns for her, you're transphobic" Hot Take
why couldn't that asshole have just stuck to writing racist South Park (yes, really; this person even filed the serial numbers off one story and got it published) fanfiction and left queer/trans history to the people who have an ounce of nuanced thinking or interest in the broader context of what they read

lmao so I'm up on the king's scaffold and the executioner leans in just before he raises the axe to take my head off and whispers that he's always had a crush on me and thinks it's a shame he'll only get to hack up such a pretty neck once. but the joke's on him cause I'm wearing a resurrection amulet and I can't seem to stop getting caught corrupting the nuns in the local convent, so I'll definitely be back

been hearing rumors that the "i'm always straight" lines may have been cut from the GN and IF that is true, I expect everyone will be super mad about that--and ngl i'd mourn the loss of it too because it has become iconic to me
But. i can't believe i'm playing devils advocate for this, BUT it is not entirely unreasonable for an adaptation of this work to decide it does not want to reference Ronan's sexuality yet......coming to terms with his sexuality is (one) part of his arc in the 2nd book. Adam Parrish being ~the 2nd secret he doesn't want to admit to himself~ , Ronan's catholic guilt homoerotic nightmares and the like, all characterize his sexuality as something he might vaguely be aware of but seriously struggles to openly admit. I don't think he even uses the word gay or any other word to describe himself in the whole series? (unless I'm forgetting something?)
So, idk, it's not unreasonable to want the (hypothetical) audience to also not be aware of it until Ronan is forced to directly grapple with his identity next book.
i think this is one of those things that has become very dear to the fandom over time, but if i look at it objectively without my feelings, i just.....i do understand why someone could conceivably decide that this off-handed bitchy "he's gay btw" joke is not of dire importance for the sanctity of the story 😭 in the 'pros don't outweigh the cons' sort of way....
#like..#in context of TRB it has some plausible deniability as just a teenage boy standard 'your gay' joke#but coming from adam#someone not characterized as immature in the typical way#it can read like a genuine observation (it did to ME when I read the book the first time and I didnt even know ahead of time which/if any-#were gay) its an observation that he IS being bitchy about rn but only bc ronan was just being bitchy to blue#and like. it comes off differently from adam because he is also not straight (but idk if ronan knows that so who knows how he took it)#wish we had his pov for that moment tbh#it is my personal head canon that Ronan lynch has never officially 'come out' to anyone#'coming out' has way too much of an emotionally vulnerable connotation to it. and i think all of these teen boys would rather die-#-than be even a little emotionally sincere on purpose. td3 said ronan thinks hes the only queer person at his school mind you#and with all the catholic guilt he has about it?? i dont think he is secure enough to openly talk about it#i always imagined Adam and /probably/ gansey have had to put two-and-two together over time on their own#any time the topic of girls or dating casually comes up i imagine ronan glaring into the distance / avoiding the question /changing subject#b/c he does not want to lie but he does not want to say anything else either so he says nothing#and his silence is so loud that his friends just. make some natural guesses#i think THAT would be his only plausible method of 'coming out'#ronan's sexuality is other peoples problem he is sure af not going to talk about it. that feels the most in character to me#(at least at this stage in his life-- while he's an insecure teenager)#yarrow reads trc 2.0#yarrow reads trc#the raven cycle#the raven cycle graphic novel#forgive me i am not like. invalidating whatever deeply personal relationship someone may have with 'thats the biggest lie you ever told'#its just my onion i swear its not some kind of 'gotcha'#i was really surprised by the extreme emotional attachment so many people apparently have with 'hey tiger'#a line i would've assumed was changed for no reason deeper than just 'sounding kind of awkward and unnatural'#but the dissertations ive read on it in the past couple days..apparently i underestimate the emotional toll of any given quote in this book#i dont envy anyone who tries to adapt it lmao

hey! I just found your blog, very into the stuff you post. I'd love to know a specific fantasy or preferred treatment you'd give to a brat. totally asking for a friend......
getting brat questions is always so interesting, because i'm not much of a brat tamer myself, despite knowing how they work. which might be why most are typically pretty disappointed with my reactions, or rather, lack thereof.
truly, it depends on the circumstance. if you were trying to get me to give chase, i would simply let you run. brats are so driven by instant gratification that no reaction is far more disarming than any other one. if the goal is to rile me up, you're shit out of luck. i'm not one to lose my temper, and i don't tend to lean towards brute force as my method of control.
one thing brats don't have, is patience. luckily, i do. regardless of instance, brats always come crawling back in due time, and that would be that. if you're looking for punishment or traditional acts of domination in response to bratting, i'm not the dom to dish them out.

Since I keep seeing the same talking point, I wanted to address it:
Yes, even things like ages can be unknown about famous historical figures! You can get can overview of reasons why at this r/askhistorians thread
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hotd fandom is full of people who don't know about historiography in general, but specifically for the kind of medieval text the book is meant to imitate, holding forth on how obvious historical fact is when that's simply not so.
And as I've said in a prior meta - yes, people in queerphobic societies have actively and consistently erased evidence of queer people and their love.
Now, it would be artistically valid to make changes in an adaptation even if none of this were the case. But it is. It's entirely possible that records were unclear due to time and the chaos of war or other factors. And that it just seemed obvious to people, as the story was handed down, that the dowager queen, Rhaenyra's stepmother, *must* have been older than her, even though she wasn't.
What we know of the past is often very sketchy. It's a careful process of putting clues together to make best guesses in many particulars. No trained historian would look at a medieval account like the kind the book imitates and simply believe it as fact.
Each subfield of history has specific tools and practices for analyzing materials to come up with the best understanding - and then historians challenge and rework those understandings over time as they reevaluate evidence and find new materials!

So last night was the GLAAD Media Awards ceremony, and it has come to light that the winner of the award for Outstanding Comedy Series was...Ted Lasso.
Now, I know next to nothing about Ted Lasso, but from what I have heard about it, there is no part of me that would hear "Ted Lasso" and automatically think of it as a queer show...
Tumblr media
And when I look at this list of nominees, I see at least three other shows that would have been excellent winners--especially Good Omens 2 and OFMD, both of which are arguably overtly, loudly queer (albeit in entirely different ways).
Both contained extraordinary performances from their lead actors. Both showed us relationships that we came to care so deeply about and feel represented by, which is particularly notable by the lack of representation that has traditionally existed for those relationships. And both have forever changed the lives of their cast members, who seem to have found themselves in ways they never expected as a result of being in these shows.
So I'm going to need someone to throw out some citations/references or just explain to me like I'm 5 why TL won this award over everything else, because the math is very not mathing here...
