So does that make Gabby and Jonathan - Shaggy and Scooby, Akihiro and Laura would be Daphne and Fred since they paired up, and Logan would be… Velma?

In the novelization of "A New Man" via "The Journals of Rupert Giles," it says that for Buffy's birthday that year (Buffy season 4), the Scoobies got her a cake with a Supergirl cake topper (which is awesome and all too fitting, of course). I'm assuming that happened in the episode itself, of course, and isn't just something the novelization added in. But I never noticed that in the episode itself!
But I love how that parallels Angel Investigations getting Cordelia a cake with Wonder Woman on it (her as Wonder Woman?) for her birthday in Angel season 3.

Pulptober 2023 Themes Elaborated, Part Five
Before we go any further, the previous posts...
Part One
Part Two
Part Three
Part Four
OK, let's goooo
21-Conan/Adventures Finds You: Another fairly straightforward one. This hero do not, as a general rule, set out to find adventure or right wrongs, they just go about their own business and keep stumbling over mysteries that needs solving, baddies that need defeating, and people that need to be rescued. Alternates: Spear & Fang+ (from Genndy Tartakovsky's Primal, whom I'm annoyed I hadn't realized counted before @maxwell-grant pointed it out), Mystery, Inc., Indiana Jones.
22-Sheena/Justice From The Jungle: Again, straightforward. Pulp loves jungles for some reason, so here we are. Jungle Jim*, Frank Buck*, Tarzan
23-The Question/Find The Truth. Another straightforward one. One of the key tools in the standard Pulp Hero's arsenal is the art and science of investigation, the solving of mysteries, the uncovering of secrets. Today is for those who make that their primary tool. John Doe+ (from Potter's Field by Mark Waid), Sherlock Holmes, Mr. Keen
24-Shang Chi/Master of the Martial Arts: Wow, today is all about obvious ones, isn't it? The ability to kick ass, even without a weapon, is pretty standard for Pulp Heroes, but today is for those where the art of unarmed combat is the primary tool in their arsenal. Alternates: El Santo*, Remo Williams*+, Joe Palooka*+
25-Nyctalope/Better Crimefighting Through Science: Ah-ha! This one sounds straightforward, but I had something very specific in mind; many Pulp Heroes make use of scientific wizardry, but this is specifically for those who's prowess and abilities are the direct result not of good genes or mysticism or but are the direct product of science. Alternates: Atomic Robo, Tom Strong.

Theses on Monsters, China Mieville
1.
The history of all hitherto-existing societies is the history of monsters. Homo sapiens is a bringer-forth of monsters as reason’s dream. They are not pathologies but symptoms, diagnoses, glories, games, and terrors.
2.
To insist that an element of the impossible and fantastic is a sine qua non of monstrousness is not mere nerd hankering (though it is that too). Monsters must be creature forms and corpuscles of the unknowable, the bad numinous. A monster is somaticized sublime, delegate from a baleful pleroma. The telos of monstrous quiddity is godhead.
3.
There is a countervailing tendency in the monstrous corpus. It is evident in Pokémon’s injunction to “catch ’em all,” in the Monster Manual’s exhaustive taxonomies, in Hollywood’s fetishized “Monster Shot.” A thing so evasive of categories provokes—and surrenders to—ravenous desire for specificity, for an itemization of its impossible body, for a genealogy, for an illustration. The telos of monstrous quiddity is specimen.
4.
Ghosts are not monsters.
5.
It is pointed out, regularly and endlessly, that the word “monster” shares roots with “monstrum,” “monstrare,” “monere“—”that which teaches,” “to show,” “to warn.” This is true but no longer of any help at all, if it ever was.
6.
Epochs throw up the monsters they need. History can be written of monsters, and in them. We experience the conjunctions of certain werewolves and crisis-gnawed feudalism, of Cthulhu and rupturing modernity, of Frankenstein’s and Moreau’s made things and a variably troubled Enlightenment, of vampires and tediously everything, of zombies and mummies and aliens and golems/robots/clockwork constructs and their own anxieties. We pass also through the endless shifts of such monstrous germs and antigens into new wounds. All our moments are monstrous moments.
7.
Monsters demand decoding, but to be worthy of their own monstrosity, they avoid final capitulation to that demand. Monsters mean something, and/but they mean everything, and/but they are themselves and irreducible. They are too concretely fanged, toothed, scaled, fire-breathing, on the one hand, and too doorlike, polysemic, fecund, rebuking of closure, on the other, merely to signify, let alone to signify one thing.
Any bugbear that can be completely parsed was never a monster, but some rubber-mask-wearing Scooby-Doo villain, a semiotic banality in fatuous disguise. It is a solution without a problem.
8.
Our sympathy for the monster is notorious. We weep for King Kong and the Creature from the Black Lagoon, no matter what they’ve done. We root for Lucifer and ache for Grendel.
It is a trace of skepticism that the given order is a desideratum that lies behind our tears for its antagonists, our troubled empathy with the invader of Hrothgar’s hall.
9.
Such sympathy for the monster is a known factor, a small problem, a minor complication for those who, in drab reaction, deploy an accusation of monstrousness against designated social enemies.
10.
When those same powers who enmonster their scapegoats reach a tipping point, a critical mass, of political ire, they abruptly and with bullying swagger enmonster themselves. The shock troops of reaction embrace their own supposed monstrousness. (From this investment emerged, for example, the Nazi Werwolf program.) Such are by far more dreadful than any monster because, their own aggrandizements notwithstanding, they are not monsters. They are more banal and more evil.
11.
The saw that We Have Seen the Real Monsters and They Are Us is neither revelation, nor clever, nor interesting, nor true. It is a betrayal of the monstrous, and of humanity.

Wenclair and Yokovina explore a haunted house after Nevermore's Halloween party.
Enid, hiding behind Wednesday: I don't like this!
Divina, snickering: Your girlfriend is 5 foot nothing and mortal. What is hiding behind her going to do?
Wednesday glares at the siren but says nothing.
Enid, indignantly: I'll have you know that she carries at least a dozen knives on her, and she knows how to use them!
A noise upstairs makes Enid jump, but Divina remains calm.
Enid: How the hell are you not scared right now??
Divina, leaning into Yoko: My girlfriend has super-strength, sharp fangs, and a bad attitude. Whatever is in here should be afraid of her.
They continue up the stairs; the creaking noises get louder. The hairs on the back of their necks stand on end as they slowly make their way into the master bedroom until...
Wednesday: BOO!
Enid and Divina scream, skittering down the stairs and straight out the door.
Yoko, beside herself with laughter: Ha! Did you see that? Enid runs like Scooby Doo!
Wednesday, the faintest smirk on her face: It was certainly an amusing subterfuge.
Yoko: You know the girls are going to be pissed at us for like a week, right?
Wednesday: Perhaps if we convince them that this was a friendly bonding ritual, they'll be more lenient.
Yoko, grinning widely: You evil genius.

No one looks more like a butch lesbian than season 1 Dean Winchester, except perhaps openly bisexual punk season 1 Dean Winchester covered in tattoos.
Support me on Patreon or send a tip on Kofi!
(ID in alt and under cut)
ID: Multiple drawings of season 1 Dean in a punk style with tattoos. 1. Chest up in a Siouxie and the Banshees hoodie, hair spiked up, nails black, bar through one eyebrow, septum ring in nose, dolphin bite hoops in lip, small gauges and multiple cartilage hoops in ears. There is a large tattoo of an open mouth full of fangs on his throat. Dean points sternly at the viewer and says, in the form of a tumblr post from tacofriendss, 'Normalize toys during sex. Roll that hot wheels over them titties. Skurt.' 2. Full body of Dean talking animatedly to someone offscreen, gesturing limply with one hand. He is wearing brown work boots, cutoff lightwash jeans, and a gray tee shirt with the Werner logo, torn off at the sleeves and below the sternum. He also has a black leather cuff on his left wrist and multiple tied and beaded bracelets on his right, along with multiple rings and the samulet. Tattoos on his left arm include: a tipped over salt shaker, a woman in a bikini posing on a billiard ball, roman numerals spelling out 11-2-83, and a chevy impala logo. Tattoos on his right arm include a barbed wire wrap, the outline of the angel from the Led Zeppelin Swan Song logo, and the name 'Cassie' written in cursive on his middle finger. On his stomach are the symbols from Zeppelin 4 and a random phone number that looks like it may have been scribbled on hastily. Scooby Doo is peeking out from his calf in the space between his boot and the jeans. 3. Dean from behind, arms reaching upwards. He is wearing low jeans and another homemade crop top, revealing the tattoo on his lower back. It is a full rendering of the impala from the side, with stylized words above it that say 'highway to hell', surrounded by flames. 4. Knees up of Dean wearing a leather vest that looks like it was cut from his dad's coat, a Bruce Springsteen shirt with the sleeves and neck cut out, sitting low on his sternum and tucked into faded black jeans, paired with a simple black belt with a wallet chain. He is posing with the fingers of one hand hooked in his pocket, the other holding up a cigarette. He is wearing all the same jewelry as in previous drawings. More tattoos are visible including a small sword on the side of his left hand, a colt revolver and Faith's tattoo from Buffy on his right forearm, a demon protection sigil in its usual place over his heart, and a stylized crucifix across from it on his right pec. /end ID

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Fanfic Rec
Guys I have so much useless fanfic knowledge -- one of my friends asked me for a list of Buffy fics and this happened.
Non-Buffy Centric, One-Shot Fics
Potential Friend by srmcd1 - a cute little ficlet that looks at what might have happened if Jesse lived.
Age Difference by Amina - for all the Oz fans out there! A time-travelling Oz gives Buffy a new perspective on life and relationships. Slightly Angel-bashing.
All that I wanted was just to be haunted by you by chasingfictions - After the events of "The Body," Jenny's ghost bullies Giles into moving in with the Summers girls. This one made me BAWL.
Appropriate conduct by The_Eclectic_Bookworm - an increasingly angry series of memos between Principal Synder & Jenny, Giles, and the other teachers of Sunnydale High. Absolutely hilarious.
i belong to time, you belong to me by chasingfictions - Dru knows when she meets Spike, that he will fall in love with a slayer. She forgets, until she doesn't. Beautiful, poetic, and very Dru.
One Girl in All the World by zedpm - a trans!Buffy AU, where she was born in a boy's body and is still the slayer. A beautifully done AU, with Oz and (surprisingly! Riley) as particular standouts. Minor Spike/Buffy.
The Holy Grail of Buffy Fics: Long, With a Focus on an Ensemble Cast. Absolute Masterpieces.
hit rewind by untiljanuary - Hands down, the best Buffy fic I've ever read. Buffy (from some time in season 6, but unclear when), is sent back in time to season 3. What makes it so interesting is that it's from everyone else's perspective! The author writes Cordelia, Willow, Faith, Angel and Spike in particular so well. Lots of interesting character work, though the plot hasn't deviated too much from canon so far.
Ships: Buffy/Spike, Angel/Cordelia, Willow/Tara, Anya/Xander. The Buffy/Angel ends on mutual terms.
two roads diverged (and that has made all the difference) by RoseyPoseyPie - a Buffy season 5/Angel season 2 crossover. Hoping to escape Glory, the Scoobies end up in Pylea with the Fang Gang. This fic is absolutely hilarious (the scene where everyone gets high and drunk together is a notable standout). The author writes Anya, Lorne and Cordelia in particular super well. Dawn and Angel's dynamic is also amazing.
Ships: Buffy/Spike, Angel/Cordelia, Anya/Xander, Willow/Tara.
don't know how to stick around, but I wanna by chasingfictions - a series in an alternate universe where Faith, instead of going to prison, joins Angel Investigations. Very Fang Gang centric, but really builds up their family bond. Darla, Faith, and Wesley were stand outs to me in this.
Ships: eventual Faith/Buffy, and minor canon pairings. Faith briefly pursues other girls, including Darla.
Best Spuffy Centric Fic
wouldn't it be nice? by SummerFrost - an alternative universe, where the will-be-done spell in season 4 goes a little differently, and Spike and Buffy start a slow crawl towards friendship that becomes... something. So soft and sweet. Has two sequels, and the season 6 one in particular is WONDERFUL.
Every Letter That You Write Me by othellia - the obligatory fandom soulmate AU. Young Buffy is absolutely adorable in this one, and Spike and Buffy's relationship is bittersweet, raw, and believable.
Choices by lafillesauvage - An AU. After Season 5 of Angel, Spike becomes human. Angel does not. Buffy still chooses Angel, and these are the consequences. Slightly excessive Angel bashing, but the characterization of Buffy and Spike, and little notes like Buffy's relationship with Giles being slowly fixed and Willow getting a non-Kennedy girlfriend are great! Buffy/Angel with a happy Spike/Buffy ending.
The Darkling by OffYourBird - the iconic time travel Spuffy fic. Buffy goes back in time and meets Spike... in the 1970s. His slow path to redemption starts differently, with tons of interesting changes in the timeline. Be warned, this one is LONG and smutty. Shout out for making me believe Giles/Anya could work as a couple!
Inside Man by HollyDB - An Angel season 5 fic. Spike calls Buffy. This shows all the things that change when Buffy has a spy on the inside of the Fang Gang. Follows canon up until the last episode, but provides fun context.
Short, Cute Cangel Fics
give them all that they can drink by eagle_eyes. The one where Cordelia is ace. Amazingly written, and the Cangel relationship is so soft and believable.
Another Chance by NikitaDreams - After the events of Angel: the Series, Cordelia travels back in time. Focus on Cangel and Connor. Lots of cute family dynamics.
Halloween Happily Ever After by GeckoGirl89 - cute, mutual pining between Angel and Cordelia in season 3. Angst with a happy ending. Really highlights how oblivious Cangel were to each other's feelings.

Cat!familiar!spike head canons
(I added this to my list of OC fics I’m working on)
@mrs-liebgott came up with the idea 🤭🤭
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Spike got cursed by a witch who he tried to kill
as punishment he now has to be a familiar to a witch
Spike just showed up as most familiars do
Literally he just just showed up with a “well here I am” and a shrug and plopped down on your couch
Spike is pouty and dramatic the whole time
He purrs when the right person touches him
he's got fangs as a cat too cuz why not
He’s the kind of familier where he can change between cat and "human" and the cat can talk
He does not like any other cats
Witch!reader also dresses him up in cat costumes
“If you show this to any of the scoobies, i’ll gut you” he says while hanging off your arm, eating one of those squeeze tube treat things
When he asked for catnip, witch!reader gives him tea leaves And he’d roll in it all “holy shit, am i so much of a stoner where it doesnt work anymore…”
He’d be pouting the whole time claiming that he hates it but really he loves it

I never gave this panel much thought, even though something I'm about to show/explain in a moment shows that Buffy didn't know about "Not Fade Away" in season 8. (The above panel is from season 9.) I just assumed Angel and Spike must have finally filled her in about it here in season 9.
So, yeah: the proof that Buffy didn't know about it in season 8, and isn't letting Angel tell her about it at the time (though Buffy is definitely justified in her anger here atm and in not wanting to talk/listen):
Tumblr media
But now I'm thinking that when she does finally learn about it in season 9, it was probably just Spike who just told her about it--which is really kind of sad, when that whole thing was Angel's whole idea and major sacrifice, really--since she and Angel aren't talking at the time.
But, yeah... everyone in the comics who didn't live in L.A. didn't know about "Not Fade Away." For months, the entire city gets sucked into Hell at the end of that episode. At the end of "Angel: After the Fall," which covers that whole thing, Connor dies. And Angel is unwilling to accept that, of course. And he and Wesley very cleverly realize that Wolfram & Hart want him for their plans and won't just accept his death and will be willing to do anything to stop it, should it happen. So, he then kills himself. And then in order to save him/bring him back, the Senior Partners have to undo the past months, and they essentially make it so everything that happened in "Not Fade Away" (following the alleyway fight) never did. And because of this, only the people in L.A. who had gotten sucked into Hell remembered that L.A. had ever disappeared and that they'd been gone. So while Buffy probably did know that Angel and the crew were gone at the time it happened and mourned them, by the above part of S8 she no longer does.
And while we're at it... let's just talk about the comics hinting at the information that was passed along from the Buffy group to the Angel groups--and vice versa--as a whole. Because I've meant to discuss this for a long time:
Tumblr media
So, Angel and Spike clearly told Buffy about Illyria. And since Buffy flat-out says Angel was part of that, this was undoubtedly in season 5 that that discussion happened.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Angel must have told Buffy stuff about Connor (who then told Xander). There can be no other explanation for the above scene, really.
I will say that one thing that kind of saddens... actually, even ticks me off a little (though at least where the shows were concerned, there were legal issues involved, in which it got to a point where Buffy and Angel couldn't appear on each other's shows anymore--at least not very easily--because they were on different networks), is that after Buffy and Angel breakup he shows up a number of times to help Buffy out with her apocalypses or to be moral support for her when she needs him. But Buffy only ever shows up to help Angel once. (Edit: And this is why, even though it's not the canon verse, I actually kind of prefer the "In Every Generation" timeline where Buffy took an army of Slayers to help Angel and the A.I. team in the "Not Fade Away" battle.)
I've seen the argument that it's because the one time she did go to help him (the Faith thing in "Sanctuary") it didn't go well, they were on two different sides of that argument, and just ended up fighting with each other. But that's not a good enough explanation for me. Really, I feel like that's just an excuse to try and justify it, when really it makes no sense and kind of paints Buffy in a bad light.
And we see in the comics that there were definitely times when Angel wanted Buffy's help/could've used her help, but didn't get it (though of course, once again, he goes to help her with one of her apocalypses in the comics. And is treated kind of badly while most people there while doing so. Which I do get after the whole Twilight thing, but sheesh!):
Tumblr media
(In the above panel, Dawn's beginning to fade away--and people are starting to forget her--as the world no longer has magic in it anymore.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Which is why I'm actually kind of glad we get this moment in season twelve, where Angel takes this apocalypse he needs help with to Buffy and is basically like, "Yeah, you're all going to help me with this, and I don't want to hear it."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anyway...
Edit: However... in the classic comics, at least, Buffy went to help Angel a few times (which I so appreciate!). Thank God.

Any more headcanons for us? Any about innes and Muir?
Round 2. Here we go:
Muir is considered the 'rich' one on deck. He's from a farming family, started by his great-grandfather, and is now owned by his older brother. He's the only member out of his immediate family who doesn't work there.
Muir is the middle child of 3 brothers. He's the only one not married or has children. He's an uncle to a niece on his younger brother's side and two nieces and one nephew on his older brother's side.
Innes is a single child.
Innes started working on oil rigs to escape a gambling addiction.
Innes is Muir's superior. Both have been working on Beria for 3 years, but Innes has been working on rigs for nearly 10 years. Muir started working on Beria in 1972 because he was bored of farm life.
In my 'Still Here' AU, Innes brought Muir back by reminding him of the time he turned to hear what Innes said, forgetting he was carrying a metal pole which hit Innes square in the face.
Headcanons not Muir and Innes based:
Scooby takes photos to either send home in letters or for his personal scrapbook. His favourite is one he took of Rennick sleeping in his office whilst on duty. Speaking of:
Gibbo is camera shy.
Roy is aro-ace.
Roy is the tallest character, standing at 6ft2.
Roy and Addair have alopecia.
Scooby, Muir, Brodie, Raffs, Rennick, Gibbo, and O'Connor are the only non-smokers.
Caz has given boxing lessons to most of the crew.
Finlay's son is in his mid-twenties and is in the British Army.
Rennick actually respects Finlay, Roy, Addair, and Brodie. The same went to Caz before the letter from the police arrived.
Infected headcanon:
The infected were going to continue to evolve if they survived to suit their fish-like appearance. For example: Rennick would have grown fangs, an underbite, and a light from his forehead, whilst Muir would develop a hardened shell.
