I also look forward to seeing all of them playing more villains in the future because they're all amazing in that role.

"THE SUSPICIONS OF MR. WHICHER: THE MURDER ON ANGEL LANE" (2013) Review

Over a decade ago, the ITV network aired a television adaptation of Kate Summerscale's 2008 true life crime book, "The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher or The Murder at Road Hill House", starring Paddy Considine. The movie proved to be such a success that producer Mark Redhead had followed up with three other television productions featuring the main character, Jack Whicher. The first of these sequels was 2013's "THE SUSPICIONS OF MR. WHICHER: THE MURDER ON ANGEL LANE".

The 2013 television movie began with Jack Whicher coming to the aid of a wealthy middle-age woman, when a young thief snatches her purse inside a London pub in London. After retrieving her purse, Whicher discovers that the woman, Susan Spencer, is searching for her missing niece, a 16 year-old girl named Mary Drew. Miss Spencer learns of Whicher's old position as a police detective and hires him to find the missing girl. Whicher eventually discovers Mary's brutally murdered body inside the police morgue. Both eventually learn that before her death, Mary had given birth to a child and someone had stolen a family heirloom from her. Miss Spencer hires Whicher to act as her private consultant and find Mary's killer.

When I first saw "THE MURDER ON ANGEL LANE", I had assumed the story began sometime after the events of 2011's "THE SUSPICIONS OF MR. WHICHER: THE MURDER AT ROAD HOUSE HILL". It took a rewatch of this second television movie for me to realize that it was set during the events of the 2011 movie - sometime between the four or five years between Mr. Whicher's failure to get the killer prosecuted for murder and the latter's eventual confession. I was able to ascertain this conclusion, due to the hostile behavior of Police Commissioner Richard Mayne toward Whicher and the one of the supporting character's comments. This setting also explained Whicher's occasional doubts regarding his skills as a detective. Now whether the other two Whicher television movies that followed were also set during this period is a matter I will eventually discover.

Unlike "THE MURDER AT ROAD HOUSE HILL", "THE MURDER ON ANGEL LANE" proved to be a genuine "whodunnit" story. This particular case was not some true crime narrative. And Whicher did not discover the antagonist's identity until the finale act. I am not saying that this particular difference made the 2013 television movie an improvement over the first one. But in a way, it felt a little refreshing to view a murder mystery/period drama, instead of a mere true life case set in the far past. "THE MURDER ON ANGEL LANE" started as an investigation into the disappearance of a well-born adolescent managed to transform into a lot more. Like "THE MURDER AT ROAD HOUSE HILL", this story also proved to be a family drama beset with murder, betrayal and corruption. But unlike the 2011 movie, greed also play a major role in "THE MURDER ON ANGEL LANE". I thought screenwriter Neil McKay and director Christopher Menaul handled the movie's narrative very well, with a minor exception or two. I also admired how McKay used the unresolved events of THE MURDER AT ROAD HOUSE HILL" to not only provide the Whicher character as an emotional obstacle for him to overcome, but also an excuse to place him in the dangerous situation that he found himself in the movie's final act.

I do have a few complaints about the plot for "THE MURDER IN ANGEL LANE". And it centers around a small group of quibbles regarding the television movie's final act. Whicher's investigation led him to a third visit at an insane asylum, where he found himself incarcerated as a patient. A part of me felt relieved that this particular scenario lasted less than five minutes. However, another part of me found this sequence rushed and contrived for it did not take Whicher long to receive help in making his escape. Following on the heels of the asylum sequence, Whicher finally confronted the murderer. But he did so alone . . . and without contacting his old friend, Chief Inspector Adolphus "Dolly" Williamson or other members of the Metropolitan Police. I understand why Neil McKay had written the confrontation scene this way. I simply found it implausible and wish he could have created another way to close the case.

I certainly had no complaints about the movie's production values. David Roger returned to the "MR. WHICHER" series to serve as production designer. As he did for "THE MURDER AT ROAD HOUSE HILL", Roger managed to re-create the look and style of early 1860s Britain with the additional work of Paul Ghirardani's art direction and the set decorations of Jo Kornstein, who had also worked on the "ROAD HOUSE HILL" production. Only in this production, his vision extended to the streets of London. Tim Palmer served as the film's cinematographer. I thought he did a solid job, but his work did not exactly blow my mind. Lucinda Wright also returned to serve as the movie's costume designer. As she did for the 2011 television movie, her work for "THE MURDER ON ANGEL LANE" perfectly recaptured the early-to-mid 1860s without being either shoddy or over-the-top.

Paddy Considine returned to reprise his role as Jack Whicher. As he had done in the first movie, the actor did an excellent job of quietly capturing the character's reserve nature, intelligence and skill for criminal investigation. However, Considine managed to add an extra touch of poignancy, as he project Whicher's occasional bouts of insecurity in the wake over the Road House Hill case and his minor failures during his investigation of this case. Both William Beck and Tim Piggott-Smith reprised their roles as "Dolly" Williamson and Commissioner Mayne from from the first film. Like Considine, both actors gave first-rate performances. And both added extra touches to their performances - especially in their characters' attitudes toward Whicher - in the wake of the Road House Hill debacle. Olivia Colman provided the movie's emotional center as the well-born Susan Spencer, who hired Whicher to first, find her niece Mary Drew and later, find the latter's killer. She and Considine, who had co-starred in the 2007 comedy, "HOT FUZZ", worked very well together. Shaun Dingwall gave a very subtle performance as Inspector George Lock, the main investigator of Mary's murder and the only one willing to give him a chance in helping the police. The television movie also featured solid performances from Mark Bazeley, Alistair Petrie, Billy Postlewaite, Angela Terence, Justine Mitchell, Sean Baker, Sam Barnard, Christopher Harper and Paul Longely.

Of the four "MR. WHICHER" television movies, I must admit that "THE SUSPICIONS OF MR. WHICHER: THE MURDER ON ANGEL LANE" is my least favorite. I believe the last fifteen to twenty minutes had been marred by some contrived writing that I believe had rushed the narrative's pacing. However, I still believe it was a first-rate production in which screenwriter Neil McKay had created an intriguing whodunnit involving a major family feud, betrayal and greed. And director Christopher Menaul, along with a talented cast led by Paddy Considine had skillfully conveyed McKay's story to the screen.

I’ve finally read Far Cry: Les Larmes d’Esperanza!

It’s a French graphic novel set in the Far Cry 6 universe. The story follows Juan Cortez who travels to the fictional country of Santa Costa, where three factions are fighting for power and a new mining resource called “Tantale” has recently been discovered, to offer his services as a mercenary… and guerrilla expert.

The book takes place before the game and is officially described as a prequel, but it can totally be read as a standalone. Most of the characters never appear in Far Cry 6, and even though what happens in Santa Costa is reminiscent of the situation in Yara, the story is self-contained and doesn’t affect the game.

Far Cry: Les Larmes d’Esperanza (“the tears of Esperanza”) is dispensable... but enjoyable, especially if you’re a Far Cry 6 and/or Juan Cortez fan! I won’t spoil the plot twists but I still want to talk a bit about continuity and the other Far Cry characters who appear in the book. Minor spoilers below…

In my opinion, Juan’s characterization doesn’t contradict who he is in Far Cry 6. The book talks about his addiction problems while showing how effective and talented at his “job” he can be, and expands a little on his backstory. For example, his childhood is very briefly mentioned and it’s “revealed” where he got the inspiration for the Supremo backpacks (or their names, at least): comic books.

I initially assumed the events of the book were set several years before the game because I thought Juan looked younger, but his adventures in Santa Costa happened shortly before he started working with Libertad. Antón is barely mentioned but already in power and, according to Juan, they are approximately the same age.

In Far Cry 6, a letter from Willis Huntley revealed that he and Juan had worked together in the past. In Les Larmes d’Esperanza, they do it again. Here is Willis (on the right) with a formally dressed Juan:

Longinus also makes an appearance. In the game, he was acquainted with Sean McKay. In the book, he has apparently known Juan for a long time and frequently supplies him with equipment.

For some reason, Hurk is here too and works for Juan at one point. There was no known connection between the two characters in Far Cry 6, so this really looks like fan service to me… Still, it’s always fun to see Hurk and it’s not impossible that he and Juan know each other, after all.

Juan also sees Vaas and Pagan in a fever dream… for no particular reason.

That said, the book feels more like a derivative work than an integral part of Far Cry 6, so those “fan service moments” didn’t bother me as much as they usually do.

Finally, after Juan’s mission in Santa Costa is over, Clara approaches him, which “explains” how and why he started working with her.

However, Guapo sadly never makes an appearance…

-君はいわゆる「すべてのトリックを最初の6ヶ月で習得した」っていうSean Sheffeyタイプの一人だったのかな？

そうかもね。13歳で始めてスポンサーがついたのが16歳。これって早い「学習曲線」なのかな？オレらはただオーリーでなにか飛び越えたり、ジャンプランプやってたりして、その後ウォールライドが流行ったのかな？そんな感じだったよ。だから今あるトリックを身に着けていく状況じゃなかった。ハンドレールもまだ広まってなかったし。だから「学習曲線」で言えば全然緩やかな感じだったと思うよ。例えるなら「360サランラップ」対「今あるトリックすべて」みたいな感じじゃないかな。

-かなり早い時期にカルフォルニアに来たよね？初めてのカルフォルニアでの冒険はどんな感じだった？

その時のトリップが動画で残ってることに驚いてるんだ―友達の一人で一緒にスケートしながら育ったKevin Chan、それとこのトリップに一緒に行ったBen Chibber。Kevin は片手で持てるビデオカメラを持ってたんだ。オレらはグレイハウンドバスでサンフランシスコまで行った。なぜかっていうと、Sick Boys（1988年リリースのスケートビデオ）に出てきたスポット全部を回るって目的があったから。消火栓に縁石、あのビデオに出てた全部をね。オレらはスケートボードを持って聖地を回る観光客みたいなもんだった。 85年だったと思うけど、その時Mike（マイク・キャロル）に会ってるんだよね―直接ではないんだけど。笑っちゃうことに彼のミニランプを無断で滑ってたんだ。その後、ちゃんとした形で会うことになるんだけど、記憶だとオレらが勝手に自分のランプを滑ってるのを観てたんだ。彼は寝室の窓から見ていてムカついてる…。彼は絶対そんなことないって言うけどMike独特の表情を知ってるよね？だから、ね…。

-当時、スポンサー契約っていうのは頭にあった？

あったね。そういう状況はローカルのパーク―Richmond Skate Ranchでも時々起きていたんだ。友達のPeter SullivanはSchmitt Stixから商品をもらってたり。Powellのチームが来たことがあって―たしかLanceとTony Hawkだったと思うけど、それって大事件で「ボーンズブリゲードが近所のパークに来たぞ！」ってことだから。結局、ローカルの何人かがPowellのライダーになった―Colinとその兄貴のCaseyのMckay兄弟とか。それを見てて「マジか。バンクーバーのキッズだよね。そんなことあるんだ」みたいに感じてたわけ。その後、自分でもBlockheadのDave Bergtholdからデッキをもらうようになった。それが人生を変えたよね。

-話をちょっと戻したいんだけど、Richmond Skate Ranchでの最高の思い出ってある？

すごいいっぱいあるよ。あの頃はむちゃくちゃ楽しかった。憶えてるのは地元に戻ってくるのが夜遅くになった日があって、たしか最終バスに乗り損ねたんだよね。その時期って、ちょうど皆がいろんなものを壊して回るのが流行りだした頃で―のちに彼らは自分たちをRed Dragonsって名乗りだすんだけど。で、その1人が小さな磁器の破片一つでどんな窓ガラスでも割ることができるって発見したんだよね。それでスパークプラグから磁気の破片を取り出して、ちっちゃなスリングショットを持ってたやつが車の販売店の窓めがけて発射したんだ。窓ガラスが割れ落ちていくのを目にして！？ってなった。「マジかよ？バスもないのにオレらなにやってんだ？」ってなって、地元までほとんど走って逃げ帰ったんだ。あの頃は「悪ガキ行為」がたくさんあったね。誰かがセブンイレブンで「襲撃だ！」って叫ぶわけ、で20人ぐらいのキッズが菓子だったり宝くじを盗んだりとかね。のちに何人かはCrime Stoppersってテレビ番組に出たりしたよ。だから、ものすごく楽しかった時期。めちゃくちゃ忙しくやらかしてた頃だけど、楽しかった。

-どういう流れでBlockheadからプロになったの？

Daveにサンフランシスコの"Back to the City"プロ・コンテストに出る気ある？って言われて。めっちゃ緊張したね。Tony Hawkの後、Mark Gonzalesの前だった記憶なんだけど、出場前に裏で吐いちゃったんだ。「ダメ。できない」って感じ。憶えてるのがSheffeyがちょっとした安心する一言をくれて、「オーライ。もういいや。なんでもこい。戻ってスケートするだけだ」ってなったんだ。

-Blockheadからリリースされたデッキ「スカンクとルートビア」のグラフィックは、なにを意味してたの？

それはたぶん、オレがIBS（過敏性腸症候群）のすごく良い例だからじゃない。オナラがすごく出る。それが「スカンク」。で、たぶんよく「ルートビア」を飲んでたから、（グラフィックを担当した）Ron Lemenが使ったんだと思う。あのグラフィック、実際気に入ってるんだよね。

-君はある意味、IBS（過敏性腸症候群）で有名だよね。聞いたところではBlockheadのビデオでシミのついた短パンで滑ってるシーンがあるとか。

あるね、EGで。たしか「Splendid Eye Torture」（1989年リリースのスケートビデオ）でちょっとしたシミが映ってると思う。スクショで送れるよ。

-履いてたLimpies（90年代のアパレルブランド）に？

LimpiesだかT-Bagsにね。 嫁Meganとの最初のデートで―彼女は君にこの話した？当時、World Industriesに勤めていた彼女のことが好きになったんだ。普段から見かけていて、ある日デートすることになった。Redond Beachに遊びに行くことになってちょうどIBSがはじまって－クソしたくなったら「どこでする？ここでなにが起きる？！」ってなるだろ。で、車を停めた。この頃彼女はなんも知らなかったけど、オレはかなり焦ってた。「そうだ、ビーチまで下りていけばトイレがあるよな」って思いついた。だけど、トイレは閉まっててオレはシャツも靴下もない状態で戻っていった。トイレの脇で済ませてシャツと靴下をトイレットペーパー代わりに使ったよ。その姿をを見て「なにがあったの？」ってなってたけど、彼女はオレとの最初の夜を乗り越えたんだ。そこで思ったよ、「オッケー、彼女なら間違いない」って。

-90年代のEmbarcadero（EMB）のスケートシーンがどんな感じだったか説明してくれる？

それか。そうだな、最高の毎日だった、それは確実だね。当時Mikey（マイク・キャロル）の家に寝泊まりしてたから毎日あそこに滑りに行っていて―Henry Sanchezが新しいトリックをメイクしたりとか、なにかしら新しいことが起きてた。すごかったね。Kelch（ジェイムス・ケルチ）や皆があの場所をどうやって取り仕切っていたかも、振り返ってみるとすごかったなって思う。だから、彼らと一緒にスケートしてあの楽しい日々を送れたってことに感謝してる。あの場所が今みたいに有名になるなんてビックリだよ。後から聞くことになったんだけど、国中からスケーターが集まってきて、彼らを有名にしたトリックを「ザ・セブン」でやりだす前―その頃には俺はもうそこにはいなかったんだ。それは後の話だね。だから有名になる前の、ちょうどいい量のEmbarcaderoについての思い出がある。あそこは特別な場所だったんだ。

-君がPlan B結成を一番初めに知ったのはいつだった？

1989か90年の夏にヨーロッ���のMünsterでコンテストがあったんだ。そこで、Danny（ダニー・ウェイ）が「見ろよ、これが始まるんだ」って、関係者のリストを見せてくれて、そこに俺の名前も候補として入ってたんだ。「え？うそでしょ。なんでこのリストに？」ってなったよ。Mikeyに（彼がこの件について）なにかしら関わっているのかどうか質問しないわけにはいかなかったね。間違いなく関わっていたと思うけど。

-あのビデオ（「Questionable」1992年）撮影時、新しいアプローチの作品になるのは君の中では明白だった？

そうだね、正解。H-Streetがすでにビデオをリリースしてたし、その内容は今まで見たことのないトリックの連続だったよね。Mike T（マイク・ターナスキー）の話からもその方向になるってわかってた。カメラの前で初めてメイクしたトリックも多かったよ。今になってみると「うわーめっちゃグラついてるしクオリティ低い」ってなるけど、今までやったことなかったり見たことのないトリックだったらその当時はクールだった。楽しかったよ。

-Matt Hensleyが（Plan Bの）最初のビデオで引退したことは良く知られてる話だね。

それからSal（サル・バービエ）が次だったよね？

-そうそう。当時、「わー、歳とってスケートしてたら自分の意志じゃなくてもリタイアさせられるのかも」みたいな感覚はあった？

うーん、あった。そういう雰囲気はかなり漂ってたね、もし君がその時23歳だったらそう思ったかも。なんていうか、クレージーな話だけど。その頃って「古いものはアウト、新しいものが正解」みたいな感じだったよね？そんな空気はたしかにあった。それがオレたちがGirlを設立したひとつのきっかけになってるかもしれない―（自分たちで会社を立ち上げれば）意志に反してリタイアすることないなって。おかしな時代だったね。

-Girlのチーム内でロゴについて反発はあった？

いや、記憶にないね。

-それとかブランドネーム自体？

Carrollがあの名前を思いついたんだ。反発があったって誰かから聞いたの？

-じゃなくて、個人的に気になってたんだ。19歳ぐらいのタフになろうとしている連中が「ロゴは女子トイレのマークにする」って言われたらどう思ったんだろうって。

だね。それってつまり、Carrollがどういう脳の使い方をするかってことだよね。人をおちょくるようなことが大好きなんだ。そう、だから反発はなかったよ。ロゴはもっと後にできたと思う。Mikeは「コンテストで『さあ、次は『女の子のためにスケートしている○○』ってアナウンスされたら笑えるよな」みたいな感じ（※通常、"skate for ～"の～にはスポンサー名がアナウンスされる）。彼はそう聞こえたらおもしろいよなって思ったんだ。特に長い間深く考えたネーミングじゃなかった。いろんなアホみたいなアイディアがあわさって、あの女子トイレマークがロゴになってツアーに出たんだ。

-GirlとChocolateって「スケート業界の老兵」にはどんな風に受け止められたの？

Girlをやり始めた頃はたくさんいる友だちを加えることができなかった。で、Girlが回りはじめた頃にChocolateをスタートさせた。だけど老兵には理解できないわけ。「こいつらなにやってんだ？また別の会社始めるだと？」みたいな感じ。で、老兵が集結するような感じでオレらを材木加工業者から締め出したんだよ。当時は2、3の業者しかスケートボードデッキを受注してくれなかった。Schmittはオレらのデッキを生産してくれたんだけど、老兵が彼に詰め寄ったんだ。「アンタがやつらを許すってことはスケートボーディングを滅茶苦茶にしてるってことなんだぞ」みたいな感じでね。Paul（ボール・シュミット）は協力的だったけど、周りに脅されたんだと思う。Fausto（ファウスト・ヴィテッロ）に出会った時ことを覚えてるんだけど、彼はとっても興奮してくれて支持してくれた。オレらのウィールを生産してくれるって言ってくれて、それからもいろんなアドバイスやヘルプをできる限りしてくれたんだ。素晴らしい人だよ。彼の協力には本当に感謝してる。なんだけど、そうオレらは家具メーカーのTaylor Dykemaにデッキを発注するしかなかったんだ。理由は君が言ったように老兵が「ダメだ。おまえら他のことやってろ」って態度だったから。まあだから、困惑したよね。

-ヤバいね。Spike（スパイク・ジョーンズ）とはどうやって繋がったの？

オレらはただバカやって遊んでただけだよ。なんていうか、彼は今でも大きくなった子どもで「遊ぶこと」が好きなんだ。探求するのが大好き。今でもなにかを学んでる、そういうところが好きだね。出会えてすごくラッキーだと思う。しっかりした人間だし、最高の一人。

-たぶん無計画に方向づけされたんだとは思うんだけど、今までにオフィスで働くことで自分自身のスケートキャリアを犠牲にしたって感じたことってある？

Mikeがその話したの？

-いや、これはオレ自身からの質問だよ。

その質問は興味深いな。Mikeと共有した経験だからね。そうだね、苦しい思いになることもあった。でも、「ノー」だね。オレらの仕事は、一緒に働いている皆の喜びの為だし、それってかけがえのないことだから。まあでも、なにかを成し遂げるには時間がかかるだろ。もちろんそういう出張だったり、時期は当然あったよ―「ああ、みんなとスケートできたのになあ。もったいないなあ」なんてね。でもね、聞いてほしんだけど、結局は正当な理由があるからなんだよね。だから、キャリアを犠牲にしているとは考えないようにしてる。そんな考えが出てくる時って不思議だよね―オレはオフィスに一晩中ってわけじゃないけど「いる」。それは「その分、時間が経過した」ってことになる。でも、振り返ってみても「スケートすることだけ頭にあって、（現在の）責任ある立場にいない」という選択をしていても不思議じゃないからね。うん、どうなってたんだろうね。

-DC（スケートシューズ会社）とスケートシューズのゲームに乗り出した時の話を聞かせて。

素晴らしかった。すべての工程に関わらなきゃなくて、それからオレが一足作ることになったんだけど、その当時のオレたちの好みにはまるのがなかったんだ。だから現行のシューズと違うものを作り出さなきゃならなかった。クレージーだったよ。最終的には家を一軒買えるぐらいの経済的恩恵に与れたと思う。はじめは、正直乗り気じゃなかったんだ。自分のモデルのスケートシューズを出すなんて「陳腐で安っぽい」って思ってたから。でも誰かに「やったほうが良いぜ」って言われて、実際にやった自分を褒めたいね。Huf（キース・ハフナゲル）やDanny（ダニー・ウェイ）のような一緒に旅行に行きたいと思う連中すべて、憧れていた全員と過ごすことができたから。楽しかったけど、次第に何人かは別の道を選ぶことになったんだ。

-GirlとChocolateには「90年代初めの重たい状況」から出てきたパイオニアたちであり仲間同士の「バイブス」があった。そこから君たちはオリジナルのクルーではないスケーターを加入させていったよね。それって難しいプロセスだった？

自然とそうなっていった感じなんだけどね。何人かは以前よりスケートしない時間が増えていったり、別の興味を追求しだして―まだコンテストが重要視されていて頃だよね、McCrank（リック・マクランク）とBrian Andersonの2人がどんな大会でも入賞してヤバいビデオパートを残してたんだ。何人かに「このMcCrankとかいうヤツ、聞いたことないな！」みたいに言われたことを憶えてる。彼の加入は何人かの機嫌を損ねることになったね。

-その時期って、君がTy Evans（フィルマー・ディレクター）と作品に取り組み始めたのと同じ頃でもあるよね。なにが君のスケーティングを「再点火」させたの？

オレたちがPlan Bから離脱した時には、みんなもう疲れ果ててたんだ。最終地点まで、かなりの激務だったからね。それからGirlをスタートしてからは「なんでもいいから撮る」みたいな感じで、ボロいカメラでお互いを撮影してた。「Goldfish」はかなり経費がかかったけど、楽しかった。だからいくつかビデオをを作って、何年か楽な感じで過ごしてた。その後、Mikeに火がついたのに気がついたんだ。「このビデオパートにトライする、マジでやる」みたいな感じで。で、それから彼らと一緒にスケートするようになって、うん、あれは特別な状況だったね。楽しかった。Tyと一緒に作ったビデオは驚異だね。言い訳ができないんだ―彼はどんなものも「スケート可能」な状態にしちゃうんだ。「照明を点けろ！」なんて言ってね。それがオレたちをハードにトライさせる状態に持っていったんだ。

-その時にいたキッズたち、P-Rod（ポール・ロドリゲス）、Biebel（ブランドン・ビーベル）やSherm（ジェレム・ロジャースのニックネーム）はどんな様子だった？実際の10代をツアー・バンに詰め込むのはどんな感じだったのかな？

あれはホント楽しかった。JeremeとPaulはヘッドフォンをシェアしたりしてたね。キッズ、若いやつらと一緒にいるのって、自分がバンでツアーしていた頃を思い出させてくれるんだ。Biebelはヤバかったね。最高の時間だった。彼とサクラメントで過ごした週末？最高だったね―川でただプカプカ浮かんでみたり、昼も夜もスケートもして。それとヤツのエネルギー��たぶん君も体験したことあるだろうけど、あのエネルギーには誰も勝てないね。

-00年代を通して、本当にヤバいくらい積み重ねられたチームライダーたちが出てくる重要なビデオを作ってきてるよね。妥協しなければならない場面もあったと思うけど、チームライダーが去っていくベスト、またはワーストの状況ってどんな感じ？

なんていうか、家族みたいなものだから悲しいことではあるんだけど、場合による。初期はマジで今まで経験したことないもない最悪な出来事だった。実際の友達でもあったわけだから。いつどのタイミングでプロとしてデッキをリリースするべきかをチームライダーと話し合う、そういう立場になることにオレは同意してなかった。今はそんなことはないけど、スタートした頃は本当にラフな感じだったんだ。Mikeがいつも言うのは「くだらないことを言ったやつらが、少ない額で解雇されてきた」なんだ。誰かに去ってもらわなきゃならない場合、良い気分のはずないよ。オレらと一緒にやってきたこと以外に、彼ら自身の創造性を伸ばしたいとか何かを新しく始めたいとかであれば、それは別のシチュエーションになる。最悪なのは、その後の人生で繋がりや友情を失ってしまうことだよね。今まで仲良くしていた皆と、いまだに友達であり続けられているオレは幸運だなって思う。たとえば、New Yorkに行くならBrianがいるのを知ってるからいつも連絡するみたいに。すごいことだよ。この一連のできごとの最良の部分、それって「繋がり」なんだ。だから関係が悪化したときは悲しいし辛い。さらに、時には手に負えない状況もある。オレはただ単に、皆になにかをやるチャンスがあることが嬉しいよ。スケートボーディングには違う側面もあるよね。つまり、大金が流れ込んできたことで人生が一変した人たちもいるから。

-オレたちが2004年にKIng of the Road（Thrasherの名物企画）に行った時、オレはBrian Andersonがゲイであることを知ったんだ。だから君たちの間では共有されていた話題なんだと思う。それから数年後、彼は公にカミングアウトすることになる…。

その時点で知っていたかわからないな。

-ある人物から聞いたんだ。

了解。それってオレらがZeroに負けたとき？

-オレたちはいつもZeroに負けてるよ

知ってる。クソ、Jamie Thomas（ジャーミー・トーマス）め！オーケイ、そうだな、オレたちは他の機会で（その件について）話したことがある。オレたちはBrianと最高のカミングアウト・パーティーをすることになったからね。

-どんな感じだったの？

オレらはSpikeのパーティーにいて、近くに��在してたBrianもやってきた。たしか最初Meg（嫁）と話してて、それからこう言ったんだ。「ヘイ、俺がゲイだって知らせておきたかったんだ」。これが笑えるんだけど、彼女から聞いたのは、その時振り返ってオレをみたらオレは誰かの肩に乗ってダンスしてたみたいで、彼が「次はRickに伝えてくる」ってなったんだって。でも彼が話してくれた時、すごく楽しかったのを覚えてる。裸になってプールに飛び込んだかって？オレたち最終的にHollywoodのいくつかのバーに流れ着いた。まあでも、楽しい夜だったよ。もっと友達があんな風にカミングアウトしてくれたらいいのにって思う。そしたらお祝いできるからね！楽しい時間だった。

-うん、なにしろ90年代初頭なんて「黄色いTシャツを着てスケートしたから」って理由で周りから追放されたからね。だからこの件に関して君たちに躊躇いがなかったのはクールだった。

でしょ？うん、たしかにそんな風潮だった。それか「適切じゃないズボンを履いてる」とか、そんなのでしょ？まさにね、あの時代はすごく偏見も派閥意識みたいなものも強かったよね。

-君が故意に、あるいはアクシデントで最悪に誰かを傷つけてしまった経験は？

Carrollに聞くべき話題。オレとしてはだんだん落ち着いてきたと思ってるんだけど、一番最近だと、あるツアーでのこと。空気の抜けたサッカーボールがあってさ、それをピント（※フットボールで両手で持ったボールを落として蹴る動作のこと）したら、それが完璧なカーブを描いて50ヤード先のMikeの顔面にヒットしたんだ。で、彼は今までみたことないぐらいキレた。終いには「こんなことがファッキン30年間あったんだぞ！」って叫んだんだ。それを聞いてさ、わかるかな？彼が言ってることは正しいんだ。オレはずっとこんな調子のバカなんだよ。たぶん彼には「いつ痛めつけられるかわからない状況への耐用年数」みたいのがあって、そこにプラスしたような感じ。Mikeの「ちょっかいを出された場合の耐用年数」を越えちゃったんだね。

-自分で自分を痛めつけた経験は？もしかして間違った薬で、あるいは正しい薬を大量に摂取して有害な影響が出たことってある？

うわ。落ち着かない気分にさせる質問だな！まあでも、あるよ。本当に若い頃、たしか14か15の時に間違って大量のアシッドをキメちゃったんだ。いつ素面に戻るかわからなくなって怖かったね。数日後、医者のところというか病院に行ったんだ。その医者には「うーん、大丈夫でしょう。温かいミルクを飲んで安静にしてください」って言われた。その後再診を受けたら「言いたくはないのですが、あなたと同じことをして元に戻れなかった人たちもいます」って言うんだ。おそらくそれが今のオレである原因。良い気分じゃなかったね。たしか3、4日間ぶっ飛んでいたと思う。あれはクールじゃなかったね。

-Girlのビデオに出てくるスキット（寸劇）で好きなのはどれ？

Owen Wilson（俳優）があのセリフを練習して現れた時は、度肝を抜かれたよ。その時初めて「Hard Out」って業界用語を知った。たとえば、「Owenは20分でHard Outしなくてはならない」みたいな感じ。彼はあれを1、2回で撮り終えたんだ。Meza（Aaron Meza ディレクター・プロデューサー）があのセリフを書きだして「この男、どうやってこんなにスケーターみたいに喋れるようになったんだ？」って昂奮してたよ。彼の最初の演技を見てオレらは抑えきれなかったね、大爆笑。まあでも、Spikeとの仕事はいつでも楽しいんだ。スキットをやるだけでも彼とふざけまわってるのは楽しいからね。実を言うと今、ちょうどLakai用にもスキットを撮り終えたところ。口ひげとカツラをつける時はいつだって楽しい日になるんだ♠
