Grimm: Hexenbiest Juliette/Grimm Nick Drabble

Summary: What if, when Juliette was becoming a Hexenbiest, she told Nick before Renard?

In which people actually talk about their feelings, and Nick discovers the benefits of having a Hexenbiest for a girlfriend.

Warnings: Sex between consenting adults, monster-fucking (the monsters being Nick and Juliette).

We do not always understand the full impact even the most inconsequential choices have on our lives. If we did, we might go mad, paralyzed with indecision, if we knew the choice to wear the black top instead of the red prevented a war five years in the future; or that because we were too busy to pet the dog waiting outside our building, the bacteria on your hand never hybridized with a rare zoonosis and caused a worldwide pandemic.

Those kinds of choices.

One rainy February in Portland, Oregon, Sean Renard made one of those choices. He came home at two in the morning from booking a dozen cultists from the wesen version of the KKK, considered the number of vacation days he’d built up, and decided to book a flight the next day to Cuba.

So when Juliette pounds on Renard’s door, desperate for help following her transformation, his car is gone and the house is dark. She cries and knocks harder, and no one comes. Finally, she gives up. She goes back to her home, and her Grimm, and tells him what she should have told him in another world.

“I’m turning into a Hexenbiest.”

This time, there are no dramatics. It’s early in the transformation. She has just barely become a witch, and her fear of Nick is less than her fear of losing him.

He kisses her and reassures her that they’ll find something, that they’ll fix her. “Hey,” he tells her, wiping the tears from her eyes, embracing her in his thick, strong arms. “We’ll get through this. This happened to you because of what you did for me,” he says, looking her in the eyes. “Juliette, you’ve been here through all the weird shit that’s happened to me since I became a Grimm. I’m not going anywhere. You’re not going through this alone.”

She cried louder, relieved at his reassurance and still half disbelieving. “Don’t Grimm hate Hexenbiest?”

She could feel the rueful chuckle in his chest. “I think that has a lot more to do all the ones we meet trying to kill us.” He pulled back, and she could see he was worried, that he was putting a brave face on for her and didn’t know if she loved or hated him for it. “What do you think? Any sudden urges to rip out my throat?” he grinned, and she decided, yes. She loved him. She smacked him in the chest.

“Only if you forget to throw your laundry in the basket again,” she snipes.

“Ouch. Yeah. I’ll remember.”

“There’s one other thing,” she hesitated. “You know how I blew the back of that guy’s head off while we were rescuing Rosalie and Monroe?”

“Yeah,” Nick says, settling down by her on the couch. “Sharp shooting.” He’s stroking his fingers over her shoulders, trying to be reassuring, then stops. “Waaaaait… you’re not saying—”

She flinches, and Nick recovers.

“Hey, no, no, no, this is good,” he hastily says. “You defended yourself. If there’s a fight and you lose your gun, I feel better about it, knowing you can still protect yourself.” He says it almost automatically, and then pauses, and she wonders if he’s considering what she is.

Nick is a Grimm. There will always be another fight. She knew that when accepted him, when she accepted his wesen friends, when she bought the gun and began to practise her aim. There was a book in the trailer Nick had barely touched, because it had no descriptions of Grimm, no recommendations for how to kill or incapacitate his enemies. It was the memoir of a Grimm’s human son, who’d bitterly noted that Grimm might live long enough to die of old age, but only by burying everyone around them.

Nick’s life was dangerous, Nick was dangerous, and she still wanted him.

Maybe she was a better partner for a Grimm as a Hexenbiest than she ever could be as a human woman.

He doesn’t ask her to woge for him. It’s a relief. She’s not sure she knows how, and she’s not sure she wants to see his reaction.

In the days to come, they must read every book in the trailer. They buy a scanner (“Because, really, Nick, these books are priceless, shouldn’t we have backups if anything ever happened to them?”) and start digitizing the materials. Nick sends the files to his mother and Trubel, who send their thanks. Juliette begins to skim the books obsessively, on her lunchbreak, before dinner, after dinner, in bed. Nick is no less diligent.

There’s nothing.

Juliette accidentally summons the salt to her hand while cooking supper, and Nick sees it, eyes wide.

“New trick?” he asks casually.

“That’s never happened before,” she tells him seriously. He seems to understand how nervous she is about all of this, because a moment later, the idiot throws a wet dishcloth at her head—

--and she smacks it away, while it’s still a metre from her hand.

“Wow,” Nick says, and somehow sounds more impressed than afraid. “Maybe we should take these new powers of yours out for a test drive?”

She’s excited and shouldn’t be. “What if—what if using them makes them harder to get rid of later?”

He picks up the wet dishcloth and hangs it on the towel rack. “Right.” He runs his hand over her shoulders, kisses the top of her head. “Well, Monroe and Rosalie will be back soon. Maybe they’ll know what to do.”

Monroe and Rosalie return, and no, they don’t know what to do. They’re just as shocked as Juliette and Nick were. She’s glad to tell them though. For one thing, Monroe and Rosalie have more books between them that might offer answers. For another, somehow, over the course of the past two years, the fuchsbau has become her closest girlfriend. Monroe and Nick begin to rake over the natural medicine texts Rosalie’s collected over the years and begin to order more from the small wesen publishing houses that supply them. While the boys are doing this, Rosalie takes her to the backroom.

“How are you holding up?” she asks, sympathetic as always.

“Terrible,” she responds automatically, flinging herself on the settee.

“I’m sorry. This must have been a shock,” Rosalie murmurs, response aggravatingly rote.

“No kidding. Actually,” she bites her lip, “no, it doesn’t feel terrible, but like, I feel it should? Like, I’m a frigging hexenbiest, and Nick’s a Grimm? What if I just like, snap some day and rip out his throat? But I have these powers—” she gestures, and a flask of dried lemonbalm floats to her hand, “and it’s exhilarating, Rosalie,” she admits, setting the flask down on the table beside her. “Like, I—I think I might like it. It’s only been a few weeks, and I don’t know if I want to lose this.”

Rosalie’s expression is as composed as ever. She’s thinking.

“You think I’m horrible person.”

“Because you’re a hexenbiest? No. No, I don’t.” She sits down across from Juliette, who’s starting crying again, and she can’t stop crying, and it’s awful. Juliette feels her hand laid down on her knee.

“Then because I don’t want to turn back?”

“No,” Rosalie tells her seriously, and the settee dips as Rosalie settles down next to her. “Every wesen struggles with their instincts. It’s more difficult for some of us than others. I don’t know or understand everything Monroe struggles with as a Blutbud, and I won’t know or understand everything you’re going through as a Hexenbiest.” Juliette lowers her hands from her face and looks at her friend, her gentle eyes and soft expression. “But saying you’re a horrible person just because you’re a hexenbiest? That’s the kind of racist, old-world crap that just about got Monroe and I killed. You’re Juliette, and you’re a hexenbiest, and you’re my friend.”

Rosalie hugs her as easily as she hugged Nick’s mother. It relaxes something in Juliette that she hadn’t realized was hurting.

“Thanks,” she gurgles out around the lump in her throat, when she can finally speak.

“Right,” Rosalie says, a few moments later, business-like. “So I might not know everything you’re going through as a hexenbiest, but there’s a few things I can get you that might help. Stay put.”

She whisks off into the shop. Juliette is squinting to make out the labels of the herbs on the nearest shelf, when Rosalie returns with hot tea for the both of them, an old book, and a stack of pamphlets. “Drink up,” the fuchsbau orders with a smile. “You’ve lost a lot of water from crying.”

Juliette begins to sip at her tea, then sputters on catching sight of the pamphlets. “ ‘You and your changing body?’” she sorts through the stack. “ ‘New feelings, new you?’—Rosalie, I’m turning into a bloody witch, not going through puberty!”

Rosalie makes a face. “Yeah, about that. Most wesen woge for the first time during early childhood, but there’s some accounts of people going through it in late teens and early adulthood. A lot of them experience a kind of hormonal surge. Some folks feel things more intensely for awhile or have personality changes, like acting more impulsive.”

“Crap,” Juliette mutters. “Puberty was bad enough the first time around.”

“Yeah,” Rosalie murmurs, and looks away.

“What,” Juliette demands. “There’s something else you’re not telling me.”

“It’s covered in the pamphlets,” Rosalie says delicately, and Juliette woges. “Just tell me!”

Rosalie flinches back with a surprised mewl, face furring over, and Juliettes winces in turn. “Oh damn, I woged, didn’t I?”

To her credit, Rosalie recovers easily. “Yes,” she says, peering curiously at her, the wet black tip of her nose wrinkling as she sniffs.

“God, I’m so ugly,” Juliette groans. “I’ve been terrified of doing this with Nick. What if he sees me like this and never wants to touch me again.”

“He should be more worried about what you’ll think if you see him,” Rosalie mutters, continuing to inspect Juliette’s face, lifting her clawed hand in her own.

“What the heck does that mean?”

“If Grimm could actually see what they look like, they’d probably have chopped off a lot less heads over the centuries,” Rosalie muses, feeling the edge of the curved claws that have replaced Juliette’s nails. “All I can say is brace yourself.”

“That bad?” Juliette asks, fascinated despite herself.

“Monroe made me watch a documentary on cave explorers. And they found this enormous pit underground, and tried to drop rocks into it, to get an idea of where the bottom based on when the rock hit. They never heard the rocks hit. That’s how deep the pit was. And one of the guys almost slipped over the edge. When you woge,” Rosalie says, intent, “that’s what Nick’s eyes are like.”

“Like bottomless pits,” Juliette says, and realizes belatedly, that she has changed back into herself.

“They look like bottomless pits. They make you feel more like you’re standing on the edge of that bottomless pit, and if you just step an inch further, you’ll be falling forever.”

“Ugh. And Nick can’t see that?”

“Nope,” Rosalie pops the ‘p’. “Totally unfair, right?”

“I’ll say,” Juliette grouses. “He looks like a human. You look like an adorable furry—”

“—hey!” Rosalie protested.

“—even Monroe looks bad-ass, and I look like a corpse.”

Rosalie, to her credit, doesn’t argue with Juliette’s self-assessment. “I do not look like an ‘adorable furry’.”

“Please,” Juliette grumbles. “Go to the furry convention next time they’re in town. I dare you.”

“I’m not going to dignify that with a response,” Rosalie tells her firmly, and continues eyeing her hands, which, thank God, have transformed back to their human shape.

“Why are you looking at me like that?”

Rosalie looks guilty. “Curiosity. I—I’m sorry. I’ve never had the opportunity to see a hexenbiest up close like this before.”

“You don’t have them in your shop?”

Rosalie takes a sip of her tea, which has stopped steaming. “Usually, they’re in a bit of a rush.” If Rosalie happens to be thinking of all the hexenbiest that have threatened her over the years at the cash, she’s not about to tell Juliette. She drinks again, giving herself time to think.

“So the pamphlets?” Juliette insisted, lifting them again.

“Hexenbiest tend to be very,” Rosalie paused, aggravatingly, to sip her tea, “sexually active.”

“I doubt Nick will complain about that,” Juliette scoffed. Rosalie’s eyes shifted sideways. “What?”

“It’s just unusual for a Hexenbiest to commit to a single male,” the fuchsbau says neutrally. “Most of them tend to live in kinship groups that share several men.”

“Ewww,” Juliette made a face. “Yuck. I’m not like, going to turn into a total ho-bag just because I’m a hexenbiest. Like, Nick totally wouldn’t go for that.” She thought a moment. “It’s not going to be like that thing with Sean Renard where the two of us would have killed each other if we couldn’t—”

“No, nothing like that,” Rosalie hastened to reassure her, gathering up the tea-cups. “More tea?” Juliette shook her head. Rosalie settled back on the settee, curling her feet under her. “You might want to avoid him though.”

“Why?”

“He’s a Royal, and a Zauberbiest. Hexenbiest are attracted to power.” Rosalie paused. “Of course,” she considered. “You already have a Grimm.”

Juliette and Nick left around 10 PM that evening. Rosalie and Monroe closed up the shop and went home in Monroe’s Tesla.

They mostly discussed their friends’ problems. Sometimes, Rosalie thought ruefully, she felt like they spent more time on Nick’s not-marriage than they did on their own.

But their friends showed up for them when it counted, and they showed up for the community.

“I can’t imagine the kind of stress this is going to put on their relationship,” Monroe vented, peeling out of his cardigan and button-down. Rosalie admired the fine musculature of his back as he picked up a striped pajama top. “I mean, can you imagine, if she woges when they’re, you know—”

He stuttered, pulling up his striped pajama bottoms awkwardly, and fell back on the bed. Rosalie snorted.

“No, Monroe, I don’t know,” she snickered, woging as she leaned over him from the other side of the bed, kissing him upside-down. “Maybe you should remind me.”

“Oh. Oh, right!” He sat up too quickly in his enthusiasm and his forehead connected solidly with hers.

“Ouch!”

“Oww!—are you okay, I’m sorry—”

“No, it’s fine Monroe—just—oww—have to lie back a moment—” she pulled herself into bed and laid back, propped up on the pillows, waiting for the ringing in her temples to disappear.

Monroe, or at least, his curiosity, recovered more quickly than her head.

“Like, I can’t imagine—with a hexenbiest?”

She turned her head and gave him an unimpressed look.

“I hope you aren’t imagining it.”

“Sorry, it’s just that—you know what I mean!”

“Yeah,” Rosalie says, turning off the lamp next to her bed and staring up at the ceiling. “I know. Attraction’s a big part of a relationship. I don’t know any wesen couples that made it if they weren’t attracted to each other’s woge.”

“I mean, hexenbiest will hit just about anything—”

Rosalie gave Monroe a look. Bless blutboden vision, he could see in low light.

“I’m just saying! Juliette might be able to get over Nick being a Grimm—might. Nick though? He’s never liked hexenbiest.”

“But he’s always loved Juliette,” Rosalie reminded him. “I’m just worried, what might happen the first time she woges. She’s already really uncomfortable with her appearance and just everything that’s happening to her, Monroe. Changing is hard enough for normal wesen who know what’s happening and expect it and who have people like them around for support. I can’t imagine what Juliette’s going through. If Nick reacts badly to her appearance while she’s woged—could you imagine getting rejected like that by someone you’re in love with?”

“Right,” Monroe said, leaning back in bed. “You’re right. I can’t.” He twisted his upper body to face Rosalie. “Think I should say something to him?”

Rosalie considered. Nick was a grown man… who had proven impressively inept at communicating with the people closest to him or intuiting their feelings. She loved Nick and Hank, but they were both kind of muscleheads.

“Yeah, that might be a good idea,” she agreed.

Monroe would be blunt, but that was probably what Nick needed.

In another world, Juliette woges, and Nick recoils. Juliette grips his face, forcing him to look at her, to see her as she is, and he can’t. Because in that world, he sees her only as he saw Adalind, as everything that ever ruined their lives, pure malfeasance made corporeal.

In this world, he is prepared.

The first time she woges in front of him, they’re out at the shooting range, and Juliette’s just beat his score. Her face changes in victory.

“Ha, got you—” she freezes. Nick knew this was coming and maintains a neutral expression. “Shit. Your eyes. Did I—” she feels her face.

Nick shrugs, and awkwardly pats her on the back, experimentally, draws back a lock of hair from her withered visage.

“Don’t worry. No one else can see.”

She looks up at him. “Your eyes, they’re really—”

He shuts them. “Better?” he asks.

“No. Open them. I want to see you,” she tells him, then hesitates. “Unless—you don’t want to see me, like this…”

Monroe’s advice comes to Nick then:

“When we’re woged, it’s like, deep down, part of who we really are. Our identity. And maybe you can find someone to reverse whatever happened to Juliette and maybe not, but if you reject her hexenbiest—I don’t know if your relationship could come back from that. Not if she’s never human again.”

He opens his eyes.

“I always want to see you, Juliette.”

The second time it happens, they’re making love, awkwardly, for the first time since she changed. She wants it. She’s afraid of how much she wants it. Rosalie’s pamphlets hadn’t been wrong about how becoming a hexenbiest would affect her in this way. She’s afraid they’ll be right about other things, and afraid Nick will notice a change in her and reject it.

They begin tentatively, fumbling like teenagers, as they never did on the first time they slept together. She’s trying not to woge and she can tell Nick was trying not to treat her any differently, and it’s just so frustrating.

“Stop,” she tells him, as he gingerly unbuttons her pajamas. “Just stop. If you’re not in love with me or attracted to me—”

“I’m in love with you and attracted to you. That hasn’t changed,” Nick says stubbornly.

“Then why won’t you touch me like it—”

“Like what?” he asks, frustrated, and she can’t tell if he is honestly confused or just too stubborn to give up and admit he’s disgusted by her. She pushes him off her, then pushes him back on the bed, pulls down his briefs, straddles him, and sinks down onto his length without waiting. “Like this,” she snaps, bucking, squeezing her hips around his thighs, kissing him, her hands as firm on his shoulders as his ever were on hers.

There’s a moment, when he is stunned or thinking—probably stunned, because Nick Burkhardt is more reactive than thoughtful—and then he rises to meet her.

He thrashes under her, pumping upwards, wrestles her for the upper hand. He turns her over, grinning, and she bares her teeth and bites him. They roll onto the floor, and she is on top again, and he is still thrusting up into her, still aroused. His eyes darken and he turns her against the wall and pins her on her side with a burst of strength.

She sneers, and flings him back, against the wall facing, with a thought, and impales herself on his length again.

He’s fighting her and fucking her at the same time, and she’s doing the same, her still-human teeth mouthing bruises into his neck, his pecs, his hands writhing against the wall where she’s holding them by sheer will, his eyes glaring out at her challenge, black as the sockets of a skull even though she isn’t woged. And she can see the Grimm for what it is, the angel of death behind Nick’s eyes, waiting to destroy her, destroy them, and she won’t let it. She snarls and woges in defiance, and the Grimm wrests free of her hold at the same time, but Nick’s erection never flags. They come together, and the sound she makes shatters the windows, and the lamp, and then it is just her and Nick there, looking at each other, her clawed hands on his shoulders, his preternaturally strong ones about her waist.

“Well,” Nick says weakly, “that was different. He twitches under her, to go to the restroom as he usually does right after sex, but she’s somehow more attuned now than she was before, and realizes his cock is starting to twitch again.

“Holy cow,” she demands. “Do you just not have a refractory period?”

Nick blushes like the boy-next-door he really is. “Uh,” he says sheepishly.

She grinds down on him, consciously reverting to her human form. “How often does this happen?”

Nick doesn’t blush often, but when he does, it is really adorable. He’s not answering her, which tells her everything he needs to know.

“Have you been wanking in the washroom every time after we have sex?”

He looks really embarrassed now.

“Juliette, I—”

“Shut it,” she kisses him. “For however long this lasts just don’t hold back on me,” she tells him—and takes him again.

Afterwards, they call their friendly neighbourhood eisbiebers to replace two windows and fix the bedroom door.

OC-Tober Day One: Sunrise

OC: Rebecca Renard

Fandom: Grimm

Pairing: Rebecca x Sean

Warnings: None, this is pure fluff.

It’s still cold when she slips out of bed, so she pulls on her house shoes, snuggles into her robe, and plods into the kitchen. She turns on the coffee maker for Sean, fixes herself some tea, and makes her way to the porch.

As far as the eye can see, darkness covers the earth. She smiles, clutching her cup between her palms to soak in the warmth, and scans the shadows. Finally, the first flickers of light appear on the horizon, and she smiles.

The sun is almost up when Sean joins her. “You know,” he murmurs, in lieu of a greeting, wrapping his arms around her waist, “I considered myself a morning person before I met you.”

Before, when she would fall asleep at all hours of the night, pouring over dusty books with her mother and jumping at every creak, she wasn’t a morning person at all. But now? She leans back into her husband’s chest, closes her eyes, and hums. This, she cannot help but think, is always worth waking up for.

Smutty Blog Introduction

Hello fellow earthlings! I’ve been debating for a while now on whether or not to become more active on this platform. Given the short nature (ish) of the content here, it seems like a good option given that I’m currently quite busy with Uni and other life stuff in general, but still feel that writer’s itch and wish to write down thoughts and ideas to explore some creative avenues. Now, for that to happen, I’m more than happy to take requests, given that I’m a part of quite a few fandoms. I’ll also add the characters I’d be willing to write for, so you guys get an idea as to what to expect.

That being said, this is a blog largely dedicated to all the smutty fics I come up with, so it’ll mostly be one-shots, drabbles, headcannons, NSWF alphabets, etc. I reserve the right to not write certain stuff because, well, I might not be into it (this includes underage stuff and noncon, straight off the bat, sorry, that’s just how it is). The origins of Hexenbiest... (drabble fic)

The story Sean Renard’s mother tells him about the genesis of her people, and the Wesen, and the Grimm.

Warnings: Sex between a prostitute and an eldritch being, described in biblical language. Actually, if you’ve ever read the bible, you’ll probably be chill with everything here.

There is a story only the Hexenbiest tell each other these days: In the beginning were all things, and from chaos, the Creator drew forth the world, and all the animals in it. And from all the animals in it, the Creator separated out man and woman, but when she came to the very last of her animals, she was tired. So she told herself, “I will do half the work today, and half tomorrow,” and so half-separated the woman from the fox and the ziegevolk from the goat, but the next day, she forgot to complete her work, and so the Wesen have remained forever suspended between man and animal.

And there was famine and plague and war on the earth, and men died in numbers uncountable, until their race dwindled and you might walk a tenday before meeting another living soul. Out of her loneliness and desperation, the first of heroes walked back into the chaos before creation and called upon Death.

“Death,” said she, “my husband has died on the blades of brigands and my daughters have been taken by demons, my sons rot in the fields after the Wesen picked clean their bones. The only child I have left to hold is the one yet in my womb, but he has not moved a fortnight, dead of hunger before he could live. Give me back his life.”

“What will you give me for that life?” asked Death of the hollow-faced woman. The mother smiled like a skull.

“I will give you a fight,” she told Death, and leapt to tackle the god.

So startled was Death, that they did not disappear into void or shift their shape or meet the mother with any divine artifice. They met the mother as mortals do, hand to hand, and they hurt her as mortals do, in the flesh. They drove their thumbs into her eyes even as she bit and clawed at Death’s manifold necks, they gashed their claws through her ears, their wings beat down and broke her bones, and still, she fought. Death crushed her all but to jelly, but there in the void, her soul clung to her corpse, and through sheer will, she stood again and again to defy the god, where all others would have submitted.

It was the fifth or fiftieth or five hundredth time, perhaps, when at last the god tired of the game. “Enough then,” they said, to the blind and deaf body at their feet. “You have proven a will worthy of your Maker, I will now give you a body to match it.”

So they straightened and set her bones, and along every fracture they firmed up hard as iron. So they healed her body, and gave into it the strength of a manticore and the swiftness of an aswang. They traded her ruined ears for a pair of their own, and the same for her ruined eyes. Last, they exchanged a piece of their own unlife for the infant’s death, and the child moved in the mother, and she cried then with Death’s eyes, overjoyed.

Then Death said to her, “When you cross back, I will come with you, I will accompany both you and every child of your will, until the world collapses back into me. For now your eyes and mine are the same.”

And that is why the eyes of the Grimm turn black: they are the eyes of Death and look out unto the void before being.

The second one to come before Death was a leader of men, tall and proud but lean as any other in those famine days. “Death,” said he. “My wives are dead of plague, my sons swallowed up by beasts. My men throw down the swords grown too heavy for their hands, and their women throw themselves from the cliffs when the raiders breach our walls. As all things go to Death, they say Death also can give all things. So Death, I ask you: give me back my wives and my sons and the strength of my city.”

Death considered the man with their many eyes. After the exchange with the Grimm, their gaze had grown kinder: the mother’s eyes looked out amid their tangling wings.

But Death is still Death, and so they said, “What will you give me in trade for these things?”

Though angered with his losses, the man was not lacking in sense or restraint. He recognized he had nothing a god would need or fear, if he gained anything, it would be by Death’s good will only.”

“Who could give you anything, oh Death, equal to your generosity, you who bestow your gift equally on king and worm and all life between? You are the ground out of which the Creator makes and returns us; our lives as much as our deaths rely on your largesse. You, greatest of gods,” and so he went on, for five or fifty or five hundred hours, until Death tired of his praises, and said, “Enough.”

“Your words are enough to move Death,” they said, “I will make it so they move also the hearts of men. Go back into the world and travel to the easternmost country, and you will find there the Creator still idling on the mountain. If you kiss her, you can steal her voice, and the words you speak thereafter will change the world.”

So the man left back into the world and found the Maker on her mountaintop, and she was lovely as the moon and stars, too lovely to make him dishonest. He would not steal a kiss from her, but sat with her, in her garden, day after night after day, and learned at her knee. And after five or fifty or five hundred years, she kissed him, and he kissed her back, and they passed her voice between them forever after; and every scion he sired on her had something of their mother’s power, though diminished by mortal blood. And this is why the Royals do not marry outside their bloodline.

Last of all, came the temple prostitute to Death. “Death,” said she, “my priests have been stoned and my temples burnt and raided, my mother and aunts taken in the road and their bodies left behind there. I am plague-ridden, Death, so none will sleep with me, and I have no coin to buy a cure or bread.”

Death looked on the whore with their many eyes and asked, “What would you have of me?”

“Our gods promised those sworn to them protection from violence and disease and famine, I ask you make good on their word.”

“And what will you give me in exchange?”

“In exchange?” the woman asked, furious. “I have already given the gods my life, what else would you ask of me?”

“Your life and service you have given to the gods of life, but I am Death, and to Death, you and yours already belong, be it in a year or an hour or day. What can you give to Death that I do not already own.”

She looked on Death, and she disrobed. She came before their many mouths and kissed them, and her skin withered against their skin. She stroked their many hands and feet and all else belonging to the body of the god, and her golden hair gristled below their beating wings. She laid with them, fearless, as one who has known the worst of men cannot fear worse from gods, and Death took her gently.

She worked her arts upon them as carefully as though they were a kingly patron, and the novelty pleased Death. They finished with her, and then said, “Go. Your womb is seeded with Death now, with the chaos before creation, your skin bears my seal. You are Death’s wife, and none will harm you, your daughters will bear the measure of our power, and no man will touch them but by their will. Go back and bring my scions into creation.”

So Death’s wife returned to the world a crone, but that crone bore three daughters. And to the eyes of men, each was beautiful as the morning, but to the eyes of those others who belonged to the half-made world—the Wesen, the Royals, the Grimm—they appeared as those long dead. They knew the secrets of the made and unmade worlds. Their tonics could cure or kill, and they had the god’s hand, and could move a knife without touching it.

Thus came the first Hexenbiest, greatest of all god-touched creatures.
