Unlocking the Mystical Powers of Dowsing Rods for Divination
Shaina Tranquilino
August 27, 2023
Tumblr media
In the world of divination, there are various tools and techniques that seekers turn to in their quest for spiritual insight. One such method is dowsing, a practice that utilizes dowsing rods as a means of connecting with higher energies and obtaining answers to perplexing questions. In this blog post, we will explore the fascinating art of using dowsing rods for divination, its history, and practical tips on how to harness their mystical powers.
Understanding Dowsing:
Dowsing dates back centuries and has been used across cultures worldwide. This ancient technique involves using Y-shaped or L-shaped metal rods or wooden sticks to locate hidden resources such as water sources, minerals, or even lost objects. However, dowsing can also be employed as a powerful tool for divination by those seeking guidance from the spiritual realm.
1. Choosing Your Dowsing Rods:
When it comes to selecting your dowsing rods, personal preference plays a significant role. Some practitioners prefer traditional L-shaped copper rods, while others opt for Y-shaped metal ones or even wooden sticks. Experiment with different materials and shapes to discover which works best for you. Remember that the most important factor is your connection with the tool.
2. Preparing Yourself:
Before embarking on any divination practice, it's crucial to ground yourself and create a sacred space conducive to spiritual work. Take a few deep breaths, center yourself, and clear your mind of any distractions or preconceptions. Visualize an energetic shield around you for protection during your divination session.
3. Setting Intentions:
Clearly define your intentions before starting your dowsing session. Be specific about what you seek clarity on or wish to uncover through this practice. Whether it's finding answers about relationships, career decisions, or simply gaining general guidance from the universe, setting clear intentions will help focus your energy.
4. Holding the Dowsing Rods:
Hold the dowsing rods lightly but firmly in a relaxed manner. Allow them to rest comfortably in your hands, with the longer ends pointing forward or upward and the short ends held loosely.
5. Establishing Yes/No Responses:
To begin, establish simple yes/no responses with your dowsing rods. Hold the rods parallel to each other while asking a question that can be answered with a definite "yes." Observe any movement of the rods towards each other or away from each other as they respond to your query. Repeat this process for a definitive "no" response, noting any different movements or reactions.
6. Asking Questions:
Once you have established your yes/no responses, you can proceed to ask specific questions. Ask one question at a time, allowing an appropriate pause between each query to allow the rods to respond and settle before moving on.
7. Trust Your Intuition:
While dowsing rods serve as a conduit for divination, it's crucial to remember that ultimately, you are tapping into your intuition and higher guidance. Trust your instincts and interpret the movements of the rods based on your inner knowingness rather than seeking external validation. Over time, you will develop a stronger connection with both yourself and the tool.
Dowsing rods offer seekers of spiritual insight a unique method of connecting with unseen energies and gaining clarity on various aspects of life. By choosing suitable dowsing rods, setting intentions, establishing yes/no responses, and trusting your intuition, you can unlock the hidden depths of divination through these mystical tools. Embrace the art of dowsing and let its ancient wisdom guide you on your personal journey of self-discovery and enlightenment.

DA2: Xenon and his Black Emporium
[This is part of the series “Playing DA like an archaeologist”]
Tales of a mysterious underground shop run by an immortal—perhaps undead—proprietor who peddles impossible and implausible goods  […] No reputable source has ever found it and none ever will, because it does not exist.
You will, of course, hear the standard justifications: it appears only to the worthy, it appears only to the invited, it is hidden by blood magic, it exists only in the Fade. Rubbish. There is no magic that can hide an entire shop full of trinkets from the eyes of a Seeker of Truth. And I am not just saying that because I searched for six months and didn't find it; shut up, Tristan.
—From a letter by Seeker Benedict to Divine Justinia V.
The codex of the Black Emporium implies that this shop is truly hidden by powerful magic if a Seeker of Truth [who, thanks to DAI and Asunder, we know they have strong unique sensory powers] couldn't find it. What it's a fact is that Hawke and the Inquisitor found it and visited it, the place exists. Now, the description of the codex makes me _speculate_ that it could be hidden in a pocket of the Fade, a small plane like the Crossroads: if blood magic were involved, a Seeker could find it. DAI and books like Asunder showed us how strong a Seeker's powers are. However, they have not senses to identify places in the in-between the waking world and the Fade. In fact, we know by the book The Masked Empire that these places are very anti-human [non-friendly towards humans, I would say]. So this kind of space could pass invisible to a very powerful Seeker. In any case, that's total speculation on my part. It’s fun to play with the idea, though.
Among the emporium’s objects that are interesting, we find many re-used items with no meaning, or if they have it, it escapes me completely.
Tumblr media
One of those is this masked bird.
Tumblr media
It's a strange creature: a bird-like humanoid with human hands and arms, holding a mask, so we can’t see its face. Its legs are of a bird [bent backwards], with feathers or scales [the resolution of the game is not great for these details], and it has shackles on its ankles. It also has talons and wings.
Tumblr media
The only hint we have of any potential meaning is given when we find it inside Hawke’s mansion: we know that the statue unsettles Fenris since he claims it’s similar to relics of the old gods in Tevinter. So it’s Tevinter-made? or Elven-made and co-opted by Tevinter? who knows.
Tumblr media
On a less interesting note, there are some iron maidens used several times in many scenarios along DA2. They have a circle on their chest with something that resembles the shape of a star. Nothing more to highlight.
Tumblr media
Continuing the less interesting objects: there are a lot of extra items in the emporium such as the dwarven sarcophagus we found in other quests, a lot of general stuff which is more related to fill and decorate the backgrounds than to have any lore significance, and many other objects spread along the Emporium with strange funny codex that can be found in the wiki and I don't think they require attention.
Now, what truly caught my attention in this place were 3 things:
Tumblr media
A piece of red lyrium on the desk, as a component for potions, like it's a totally normal component. After analysing DA2, and specially in the posts of the Gallows or the one about Red Lyrium, I have the suspicion that Red Lyrium m ay have been used by Tevinter when Kirkwall was still called Emerius, which would explain why Xenon has pieces of this element even when we visit him before the expedition to the Deep Roads [or maybe it’s just a dev’s overlook. It can happen].
Tumblr media
However, the detail is very well-thought: because it's red lyrium, and may have some effect on the Fade around it, we see the desk surrounded by Felandaris, an herb that only grows where the Fade is thin.
Tumblr media
The most shocking part of this DLC, lore-wise, is that Xenon has an eluvian infected with red lyrium, being the Mirror of Transformation. Yes, it’s close to the concept that, if the Fade alterations have effects in reality, and an eluvian allows you to have access to the Fade, maybe a mirror in this twisted/corrupted condition can alter its reflection in the Fade and see the consequences in the waking world. Something along those lines. As it couldn’t get worse, in the background, on a shelf, we see two of those cursed statues [see post of Strange Idol].
Tumblr media
There is also a golem that, according to the emporium codex, is the defence that Xenon has when someone wants to steal something. I don’t think there is much to say about it.
Now we move on to the most interesting thing in this place: Xenon himself, the owner of the Black Emporium.
Tumblr media
Seeing his design is fabulous. There is no way to understand what happened to him: he is a mess of limbs.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
DA2 Xenon has the following characteristics: I can count 11 arms and 5 legs. Below the book there is another face, screaming, covering its eye sockets with two additional hands. It looks like small humanoid bodies were stuck or absorbed by Xenon’s core. Part of the 3 arms that reach the back of the chair are fused with the chair as well.
Tumblr media
If we see the detail, his limbs are fused with the chair suggesting petrifaction?
What is curious to me was that extra head below the red book. It looks like that, in order to keep his youth, Xenon may have used magic to fuse his body with other living creatures, adding more and more limbs to his body with each procedure. Once more, this idea resembles part of the narration of The Horror of Hormak, which features monstrosities with many limbs as a consequence of fusing living creatures. As a speculation, I think there is a remote possibility that Xenon has been close to this kind of elvhenan magic, in his many experiments to seek a solution to his state.
Tumblr media
Just to discard an excess of hypothesis and wild speculation, for a moment I thought that the screaming face under the book could be similar to the cursed strange idol, or to the red lyrium idol. I placed these objects in the same picture to compare easily… and we can see there is no relationship at all. However, it’s disturbing that the small head comes from his heart, which is from where the red idol was retaken from Meredith’s remains [Tevinter Nights]. Maybe it’s not the exact same thing, but a similar procedure or the imitation of it.
Tumblr media
DAI Screenshots belong to  https://twitter.com/Legimel
I did not replay DAI yet, but I picked some screenshots to compare and remove some doubts I was having in terms of design. DAI Xenon is not different to DA2 Xenon, the effect of his body getting fused with the chair is more notorious, as all the details are, including the small screaming head below the book. So, Xenon is consistent through both games, at a simple glance. I’ll do a detailed post of him once I replay DAI.
Tumblr media
I checked the art books to see if I could find something interesting too. What I found is that Xenon’s tarot card has not much to offer with the exception of a small detail: the hands that cover the small screaming head below the book seem to be tied, giving the impression that, maybe, those bodies attached to Xenon were unwillingly people [fusing with him in an attempt to keep his youth?].
Tumblr media
In the book Art of Inquisition, we see the same detail again: those hands are tied with a rope.
Tumblr media
When it comes to the information in these books, there is nothing interesting. Everything is narrated in a very vague way.
The codex about him offer little important information: all of them are written by unreliable narrators that know nothing about the true past of Xenon.  [Codex in DA2, and in DAI]
Like in the book of World of Thedas, there are some lines, written in a very vague way, that suggest [if this can even be considered true] that the Antivan Witch of the Wild granted him eternal life without youth. This would mean that Yavanna and her dragons [which blood is the blood of the world] may have been related to all this, but seems very unlikely. Could she be that powerful? Probably Xenon will remain a mystery forever.

Puredistance I (Puredistance)
It has always existed, in a blinding variety of forms. It goes by many names, as if to confuse the seeker. It can be found everywhere, but only if you're looking.
If you travel to Polynesia, you will hear about mana, a spiritual quality found in people and objects of power. At Findhorn Garden in northern Scotland, they'll tell you about the tutelary deva that inhabits each flower and tree. The earthy and plainspoken Vikings knew it as vættur (wight) or álfr (elf)-- both personifications of a nameless, vital energy.
In ancient Rome, philosophers called it numen, ineffable presence; the Greeks called it a eudaimon and believed it responsible for conferring happiness on all mortal beings. In Japan, it is addressed as Ō-kami, honorable great being, and is reckoned mighty enough to shake the foundations of the earth.
Incarnated in this tiny sample vial, it is called Puredistance I.
For a perfume billed as one of the most exclusive on earth, it looks quite innocuous -- a glass tube full of rosy-amber liquid, enclosed in a clever white box which unfolds like a reliquary and snaps crisply closed as though it concealed a tiny, hidden rare-earth magnet. And it probably does. The full-bottle iteration of PI comes in packaging so deluxe that I probably couldn't afford it even if it came without the perfume. Sheathed in a protective block of Swarovski crystal as if to shield it from the world's contaminants, it is clearly meant to be perceived as a precious, even powerful substance, needful of careful containment. (If this were Pandora, the atomizer and cap would be made of pure unobtainium.)
Getting the sample vial open poses a challenge, as the plastic stopper appears to operate on a flexible ball-and-socket principle, ballooning slightly within the rim to create a hermetic seal. Obviously, if I want to gain access to the elixir inside, I'll be forced to work for it. My hands tremble during the procedure-- partly from effort, partly from terror. What if I should fumble and spill it? Would this be Joy all over again?
Finally the stopper slides through, and I hold the vial under my nose.
I suppose I've been conditioned to expect an aloof attitude from people and things of luxury-- a snobbish stance that questions my right to partake. But what wafts up to meet my nostrils was so friendly, so glad to greet me, I wonder if I'm imagining things. This isJoy all right; not Jean Patou's version, but the real thing. Who am I to argue?
I place my fingertip over the mouth of the vial, tip it, touch the perfume to the base of my throat, restopper the vial, and wait to see what will happen.
Over the next fifteen minutes, PI enters my aura and just-- proliferates. From a single point of contact on my throat, it seems to expand, multiply, fill my etheric body like helium. Sounds hippy-dippy? I agree. But I can't deny what it does for my energy. I have experienced the same effect when I've worn a particular quartz crystal next to my skin-- a thrum of electricity all through me, as if I've just plugged into a hidden power source. Although my morning began with various anxieties and tests of my patience, I now feel calm and grounded, all my tiny pinhole leaks repaired.
When you encounter it, you may be as incredulous as I am now. But there it is. So synchronized doI feel to Puredistance after half an hour that I forget I'm simply -- what do you call it? -- wearing a perfume.
Yet PI is a perfume. And what a perfume-- one of the loveliest I've had the pleasure to meet. Beginning with an awe-inspiring virtual sunrise composed of citrus-blossom notes, it wends its way slowly and meditatively through a garden of cream and butter-yellow flowers before coming to rest on a tender chord of musk. And the cassis? Irreproachable. PI contains blackcurrant the way a properly-mixed kir cleaves to the ratio of one-tenth crème de cassis to nine-tenths dry white wine. The result: crisp and sparkling, yet graceful and restrained. The implied presence of the round, ripe, glossy blackcurrant is far more effective than any crass surfeit of the fruit. (Got that, Thierry Mugler?)
Works of art perform many useful services for mankind, the greatest of which may be to liberate our emotions. Rare may be the perfume that accomplishes this feat; once encountered, it forces a shift in belief. I might have held PI at a skeptical distance if I had not experienced it for myself. Now, like one who has met the Buddha on the roadside, I understand why such great lengths have been traveled to present this fragrance to the world. It is precious. It is powerful. It goes beyond mere perfumery and enters the realm of the numen, the mana, the eudaimon.
I'll leave you with the one tiny word that changed a great man's fate forever. Is it any wonder he found it in an art gallery? Let him tell the story:
…I saw this ladder on a painting leading up to the ceiling where there was a spyglass hanging down. It’s what made me stay. I went up the ladder and I got the spyglass and there was tiny little writing there. You really have to stand on top of the ladder -- you feel like a fool, you could fall any minute -- and you look through and it just says "YES"…
Well, all the so-called avant-garde art at the time and everything that was supposedly interesting was all negative, this smash-the-piano-with-a-hammer, break-the-sculpture boring, negative crap. It was all anti-, anti-, anti-. Anti-art, anti-establishment. And just that “YES” made me stay in a gallery full of apples and nails instead of just walking out….
--John Lennon, describing his first encounter with the artist Yoko Ono, from a 1980 Playboy interview with journalist David Sheff
Scent Elements: Tangerine blossom, cassis, neroli bigarade, magnolia, rose wardia, jasmine, mimosa, amber, vetiver, white musk, and a mystery substance known as "parmenthia" about which I have been unable to find any information whatsoever, being that it never appears in anything but Puredistance ad copy and related reviews. Being an fan of Avatar, I like to think parmenthia only grows on Pandora, and is the "active ingredient" that fills this perfume with Eywa.)

In a world which is split, alienated, untrue to itself, this unity of the world is torn and reconfigured under the totalitarianism of alienated existence. Capital aims at becoming the social whole, at subordinating everything to itself and reorganizing the world around its all-devouring growth. As Marx taught us, capital originates from the way the relations between living beings are organized, but also dominates these beings. By doing so, it acts “behind the backs of the actors.” In a word, capitalism becomes second nature in a dual sense — it literally operates above and beyond the individuals who create it the same way that natural, physical processes like gravitational pull do, and it appears to individuals in capitalist society as the natural order of the world.
Marx tried to describe this phenomena in the related concepts of commodity fetishism, where value appears as a characteristic of objects themselves rather than as socially created, and of real abstraction, abstract categories like labor-as-such or value-as-such which operate in everyday life. The division of labor and growing scale and density of society in turn make society into something like a massive machine, where it is impossible for any individual to comprehend or control the whole thing. What he always emphasized is that capitalism is literally mystified, and that this mystification occurs both on the level of our social whole and on the level of subjective consciousness.
With this in mind, an uncritical form of appealing to “lived experience” seems quite problematic. Not only can our consciousness about the world be mystified, and fail to understand — the world itself can be mystified? How can we be sure we understand the world, or even ourselves? If our lived experience is complacent with this mystification (and vice versa), then how can it be a reliable appeal for emancipatory truth?
One answer to this unreliability would be to simply identify that truth with the whole rather than the individual, to say that truth on an individual scale falls apart and that one only reaches truth when the truth-seeker is identical to the object they seek truth about. The individual truth-seeker, the knower, is not enough — one must reach the scale of the whole knowing itself. Perhaps, this ultimate identity of subject and object can directly be called God, or it can be called the Absolute, the unconditioned truth which is not merely true relative to something else. This is Hegel’s answer. In light of the horrific catastrophe of modern life however, from the Holocaust to the capitalocene, this seems trite. Theodor Adorno’s slogan, that “The whole is the false,” seems more appropriate to the world we live in.
The critical dialectic of Marxism offers us a potential to redeem this desire for emancipatory approach premised on “lived experience” where it critiques the “truth” of this capitalist social totality. This dialectic teaches us to question intuition, since immediate experience often contains abstractions and mystifications. Yet, it also values that embodied intuition as a potential seed for transformation on a total scale. Marx spoke approvingly of the intuitive revolts of workers, saying of the 1844 uprising of Silesian weavers “[…]Not only are the machines, these rivals of the worker, destroyed, but also the ledgers, the property titles, and while all the other movements turned first only against the industrial baron, i.e. the visible enemy, this movement turned also against the banker, the hidden enemy[…]”
Here, Marx sees the working class as already recognizing the power of capital as transcending individuals, as something beyond just its embodiment in the boss. In this sense, the workers themselves, in their uprising itself, point through their practice to a theoretical point. In his words, “[…]the Silesian revolt by no means took place in the separation of thoughts from social principles.” As Raya Dunayevskaya has noted about his writing on the working class struggle to shorten the workday in Capital (1867), “[…]theory is not something the intellectual works out alone. Rather, the actions of the proletariat create the possibility for the intellectual to work out theory.” Rather than emancipatory truth being the social totality, or being the solipsistic and quantitative individual, Marx pointed towards the potential emancipatory whole embedded in the revolutionary actions of everyday life.
Revolution, or emancipation, must start from everyday life, but cannot become content with staying there. The notion of “emancipatory” solipsism is in truth a defense of the capitalist social totality — You are not revolutionary merely by existing. There is a revolutionary potential within our concrete, lived existences, but these existences in themselves are not revolution. We must reject both those pessimistic doctrines which speak of the “system” as independent of human action (whether it is the natural order or it is so entrenched that it may as well be so) and those which try to take the individual as a refuge from society, ignoring the historical and social mediation of every individual and their identities — including their very identity of being an individual! We are not inherently anything, and this becomes obvious when the attempt to strictly delineate “lanes” falls apart into incoherence.

Hide & Seek - A Look at Hidden Object Games
I want to talk about an odd genre today, one that doesn’t really get much mainstream appeal: Hidden Object Games. There are, of course, scores of them available to play. It seems a fairly simple genre to break into it. You just need a decent artist to do some pretty backdrops and you just scatter some objects around it, making a list of what the player has to find. That’s the skeleton of it but that doesn’t really explain the appeal of it. It’s a genre that I’ve had a dalyance with a few times now, so I wanted to take a look.
I’ll be looking at it through the lens of a mobile game called Seekers Notes, developed by MyTona. Mobile seems to be the perfect platform for a game like this, as the gameplay is limited to tapping. Seekers Notes is a good way for me to talk about the genre because it has a story behind it too, which highlights some of the quirks of the genre. It’s also got good production value. It’s a good game, a great example of the genre. So now, let’s dissect it.
Tumblr media
So why is tapping objects on a screen fun? Well, I suspect it’s the same way that assembling a jigsaw is fun. Jigsaw puzzles have different ranges of difficulty, based on the amount of pieces stuffed in the box, but they’re fundamentally uncomplicated. You’re simply recreating the picture on the box and finding the pieces that fit together. The fun comes from seeing the picture slowly come together and from hunting out the right piece among hundreds.
I think the same metric of fun can be applied to hidden object games. Rather than assembling a picture, you’re dismantling it. The fun comes from spotting some hidden piece, tucked away in the corner of the picture. It’s not an exciting genre, of course, no matter what kind of clock you put on it. But people don’t do jigsaw puzzles to get excited and the same applies here. It’s for relaxation, a way of engaging your brain but without the need for complex thought. The list says scissors, so you find the scissors.
On top of that, you usually have a nice backdrop to look at while you do it. Seekers Notes has a huge range of levels, each gunning for different things. The graphics are nice to look at and the backdrops are animated. Add in the pleasant music and it’s just a nice place to be. The problems, however, begin to arise with the repetitive nature. After all, looking for, and tapping, things is going to get old. Even in other games, such as The Clockwork Man, this begins to bite. Seekers Notes changes up where its things are hidden but the grindy nature of the game makes things tend to blend together.
Tumblr media
I imagine that’s probably down to the mobile platform than anything else though. Gotta keep people interested ‘cause that’s where the money is. Still, it’s a free game so I can’t complain too much. Instead, let's turn to the odd quirk of hidden object games: the story. Seekers Notes has a fairly detailed story about a town being overtaken by dark forces. We need to hunt down the culprit, the man in the mask, by… finding a book, a bottle and a teapot. It just seems a little silly and all the games tend to do it. I’m supposed to be looking for clues, right? They’re unlikely to be concealed in an umbrella.
Still, the story does at least give more of a reason to push through the puzzles, particularly when Seekers Notes pretends its Bejeweled. Not a huge fan of that. But its actual hidden object levels are fantastic because it ticks all of those above boxes. Nice backdrop, big list of things to find and the levels change things up. It’s not a game to play for hours at a time, it’s something to play at the end of the day to help your brain wind down. The need to focus helps push away the other worries of the day. You’ve got a to-do list and you just gotta do it. It’s not hard but it’s fun.
It goes back to all the stress relief games I’ve spoken about before. Hunting down all the objects in a level gives you a nice win. You have to concentrate but it doesn’t tax you. Like a jigsaw puzzle. The enjoyment is in solving simple puzzles without strings attached. It hands you a gentle win, essentially. Add in the production value and you’ve got a good game. It’s not a genre that’s going to win awards and make headlines but hidden object is, pardon the phrase, something of a hidden gem if you’re looking to chill out. An odd one to recommend, but I’d give it a look in if you want something to distract you before bed.

Energy Update: November 2021
November is a 7 Universal month [11 (November) + 5 (2021) =16 = 1+6 = 7] in a 5 universal year. The 7 energy supports inner wisdom, truth seekers, and all who wish to pursue the mysteries in life - a fitting accompaniment to Scorpio and Sagittarius season and our last eclipse cycle on the Gemini-Sagittarius axis. After a year of endless stand-stills as Saturn in Aquarius squared off with Uranus in Taurus, we are starting to dig deep into the reasons that we have been shut down and cut off from where we need to be in our lives. The answers are there but still hidden below the surface. This is a month to dig deep and really explore yourself, your life, and your motivations.
The Setup
As we move into the ever-deepening shadows of Scorpio season, the Sun and Mars are in the sign of Scorpio, Mercury is about the exit their post retrograde shadow at the end of Libra, and Venus is in the freedom-loving sign of Sagittarius. By month's end, the Sun and Mercury will be in Sagittarius; additionally, Venus will have entered Capricorn in the shadow of her next retrograde which starts during December. Saturn, Jupiter, and Pluto will remain direct in Aquarius and Capricorn respectively, and Uranus remains retrograde in Taurus while Neptune remains retrograde in Pisces.
All eyes will be on our fixed signs: Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Sagittarius. Our ongoing square between Saturn and Uranus is growing tighter daily for one final conjunction that will be exact on 12/24. This is our Irresistible Force Paradox - if Uranus is the unstoppable force that wrecks our lives (like the Tower card in the tarot) to force change, Saturn is the immovable object in his way. Something has to give. Something things have to break before we can move forward. This is unavoidable.
The Nitty Gritty
There is no sugar coating this: the energy of November is going to be intense and likely quite provoking to those who are not living in alignment with their true selves. As our Sun, Mercury, and Mars transverse the sign of Scorpio this month, each will make a hard square to Saturn in Aquarius and opposition to Uranus in Taurus. These are our big Caution Days of the month: 11/2, 11/4, 11/10, 11/13, and 11/17. It is worth noting that both our new moon in Scorpio on 11/04 and lunar eclipse in Taurus on 11/19 will occur while these energies are highlighted - approach both lunar events with extra caution.
We've been sitting in the energy of this Saturn-Uranus square for most of a year and some complacency may have set it. We may feel like this sense of inertia is going to last forever. We've likely been still for so long that we've failed to notice the tension building slowly and methodically (Taurus is the turtle that wins the race, one step at a time). Where have the termors been growing in your own life? Where is the steam building below the surface? These are the signals you need to be extra mindful of all month (and through December as well) because you might want to step out of the way when this energy finally blows its top. And it will blow its top - like a slingshot held taut for too long, this energy is going to exert extreme force as it releases.
With Saturn in Aquarius feeding and delaying the forces of Uranus in Taurus, the initial blast of this may appear violently destructive. Expect metaphorical volcanic eruptions around stagnant issues in your own life - especially those that fall under the purview of the fixed signs (wherever Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius fall in your personal natal charts). This will manifest differently for each of us based upon our own charts and the charts of our Others but we will also see it manifest outwardly in the world at large. An event this big does not go unnoticed. For some, major earthquakes might shift around your priorities. For others, lava might make your common stomping grounds uninhabitable. Beware the pyroclastic flows that incinerate anything in their paths. Others may find it hard to breathe as they choke on volcanic gasses and still others may have to deal with a tsunami of unactualized emotions. Yes, it's a metaphor and should be taken with a grain of salt but we are reaching the main event that we've been working towards for a full year. There will be casualties despite all of our best efforts.
As we enter eclipse season on 11/19, these "disasters" will take on a fated edge. If you are holding on to something past its time - something that was meant to be a "now" thing instead of a "forever" thing - you may find it swept away in the deluge. Trust that what is leaving your life is meant to go to make space for something better. Though destructive - volcanos are a source of great fertility and renewal to the land...eventually. There may be some debris to clean up before you can get there.
We ARE getting somewhere this month but it made be hard to see the forest for the trees (perhaps because the aforementioned pyroclastic flows knocked all the trees down, but I digress). Your best bet is to go with the flow; all of the Scorpionic energy might make you want to fight the currents but that will only drag your underwater. Beware the Scorpio bad habits of obsession and rumination over things that cannot be changed that are outside of yourself - this is a month to dig deep and change the things within yourself that will propel you forward towards your goals. Instead, tap into the Scorpio's high vibe energy of the Eagle and sore high above the petty grievances of your life. Or, if you're ready to stand in the fire, tap into the Scorpionic connection to the mythological Phoenix and burn it all to the ground to start anew.
As Scorpio season winds down, we will experience a very late lunar eclipse a mere two days before the Sun enters Sagittarius on 11/21 and makes an immediate conjunct to our South Node. This shows that there is something from our past that we need to let go of to move forward. If you've found yourself in a state of decision paralysis around an important choice in your life, something important may come to light around this time that will make your choices clear. DO NOT IGNORE THIS INFORMATION. There are no bigger lies in life than those that we tell ourselves. You cannot evolve past that which you run from. This is a month in which facing yourself is of utmost importance all throughout but especially as the month winds to a close and we sit in the in-between of eclipse season.
As mentioned above, this is the last of the eclipses on the Gemini-Sagittarius axis before the nodes shift to Taurus-Scorpio at the beginning of the new year. This is the end of the cycle of fate coming to a close - use it to your advantage so that fate works for you rather than against you. Somewhere you know in your heart of hearts what is meant to stay in your life and what needs to go. Scorpio is a sign that is not known from running from fear or those parts of life that are unpleasant - use this energy to enter your own personal dark side cave. What are you holding onto out of fear rather than love? Where have you stifled the sparks of creativity within yourself to stay in a place of comfort rather than growth? What in your life have you outgrown? What can you let go of to make space for what you are becoming?
Only you can answer these questions for yourself, just as only your Others can answer these questions for themselves. There is deep magic in that, magic that will light your way through this dark season.
The Aspects
As always, important aspects are Bolded for emphasis.
11/1 - Mercury in Libra trine Jupiter in Aquarius - 11/1 (111) is a magic number and with this quick transit, you are all set to have a magical day 11/2 - Mercury exits its post shadow, Mercury in Libra square Pluto in Capricorn - here we round out the last of the trials and tribulations of this Mercury retrograde cycle, something has to give so that you can move forward with what you have learned. Let it go. 11/4 - Sun in Scorpio opposed to retrograde Uranus in Taurus, new moon at 12 Scorpio - Lay low and stay home if you are able. Stay aware of what breaks down today and work to reassemble it in a way that suits the future rather than the past 11/5 - Mercury enters Scorpio, Venus enters Capricorn - two planets switching signs in the same day is big news, expect a change of pace and mood for the rest of Scorpio season (and beyond). Mercury in Scorpio may be preoccupied with uncovering secrets so watch out for those lies. Venus will be in Capricorn for a very long time as she enters her own retrograde cycle. 11/6 - Mercury in Scorpio sextile Venus in Capricorn - a sweet day among the sour, talk things out today if you need to 11/10 - Mercury conjunct Mars at 7 Scorpio, Mercury square Saturn, Mars square Saturn, Venus sextile Mars - We need to think about what we have done and the consequences of our actions. With Saturn so activated, this has a fated feel. Karma may come due today. 11/12 - Sun in Scorpio trine retrograde Neptune in Pisces - a day better spent daydreaming than doing 11/13 - Mercury in Scorpio opposed retrograde Uranus in Taurus - Mercury and Uranus are both involved in communication and truth. Expect a big reveal at this time and trust the unfolding and what it is telling you. 11/15 - Sun in Scorpio square Jupiter in Aquarius - where are you getting ahead of yourself? Where are you pushing yourself too hard? As the planet of expansion goes up against our egos - we may be made aware of our mistakes. Learn from them. 11/16 - Sun in Scorpio sextile Pluto in Capricorn 11/17 - Venus enters her shadow, Mars in Scorpio opposed retrograde Uranus in Taurus - this is perhaps the most dangerous day of the month. Pack your patience and be very careful with machinery and other accident-prone areas in your life during this time. 11/18 - Mercury in Scorpio trine retrograde Neptune in Pisces - fuzzy, don't expect to get much done 11/19 - Venus in Capricorn trine retrograde Uranus in Taurus, eclipsed full moon at 27 Taurus - this is our other biggest danger day of the month. Mars is still opposed to Uranus which counters Venus' trine - watch out especially for relationship conflicts around this date which could prove fatal. This is break up and breakdown weather, plan accordingly. 11/20 - Mercury in Scorpio square Jupiter in Aquarius - Where have you been saying too much? There is a power in silence. Use it. 11/21 - Sun enters Sagittarius - the mood will lighten as our Sun enters the sign of the Archer. We are not out of the woods though - Sag season sees our solar eclipse and Venus retrograde, so stay away. 11/24 - Mercury enters Sagittarius - We've spent the month delving into the shadows of our own psyches and now is the time to come up for air. Conflicts around fairness may come to the surface during this time. Truths may be revealed 11/29 - Sun conjunct Mercury 10 Sagittarius, Mars in Scorpio trine retrograde Neptune in Pisces - Thoughts may be ego-driven and clouded, watch out for falsehoods and the ways you lie to yourself. 11/30 - Mercury in Sagittarius sextile Saturn in Aquarius, Venus in Capricorn sextile retrograde Neptune in Pisces - a sweet day to end a hard month.

Heartbeats (Part Two)
Based on this request: “Jesper x reader where she was in the first army and grew up with mal and Alina, but then when stuff goes down in the fold she ends up in ketterdam (maybe she’s grisha too) and teams up with the crows but her and Jesper end up falling for each other?”
part one / masterlist
Tumblr media
As much as you’d like to avoid it, though, the battle on the sand skiff rages on. In the end, despite all of your complaints about Kerch sharpshooters and their unusually quick wits, there’s nothing you can do about the present situation except fight your way out of it. You’ve been a soldier for a long time now, a tracker and a fighter through the First Army. This isn’t your first brawl, and it likely won’t be your last.
It is, however, your first one where you’re actively attacking the grotesque flying monsters known affectionately as volcra. There are also several Grisha on board, and despite your silent protests, you can hear your power almost calling out to them, as if it can recognize those of its own kind. You try to reel it back in, collect it and calm it and force it away, but in a life and death situation like this, your control is weak. If you used it now, you could probably save yourself. The only issue is that by revealing yourself, you might damn yourself to a worse fate than a quick death at the claws of a volcra.
So, you ignore the thrum of heartbeats echoing out around you, electing instead to fire your pistols again and again. You’re not the only shooter here- Jesper Fahey is at your back, the two of you surrounded by a cloud of smoke issuing from the barrels of your respective guns. You could almost fool yourself into thinking that you might make a good team. Clearly, the stress of the battle is getting to you.
Then, just when you’re sure that you’re going to make it out of here alive, you slip up. You took too long in taking down a volcra and forgot about the Darkling’s oprichniki guards still on board the ship. You sense them before you see them, and whip around to see one seconds away from shooting you full of bullets. Your own arm rises involuntarily, as if pulling the string of a marionette. The oprichnik’s body rises in turn, his face turning ashy as his heart is yanked apart under your watch.
The moment is over almost as quickly as it happens. The guard’s body slams to the ground beneath him, head lolling. He’s dead, no question of that. What have you done now? You quickly force your hand back to your side, pretending as if you’d shot the guard and nothing more. Alina and Mal are still busy with the Darkling on the other side of the skiff, so you think you’ve managed to keep your secret intact for a little longer. Saints, you’d sworn to yourself that you wouldn’t let this happen. Grisha are constantly on the run for their lives, and you can only imagine that it will get worse now that word of the Darkling’s treachery has come out. You can’t afford for this to happen.
When you look up, though, you’re met with a pair of eyes. Jesper Fahey watches you from his place a few paces away from you. There’s no doubt in your mind that he’s seen everything, that he knows exactly what you are. Strangely enough, though, he doesn’t seem angry or surprised or even afraid. Instead, he just looks understanding, like he knows exactly what you’re going through. He nods his head once, a sharp motion, then moves away again.
You try to redirect your attention back to the fight at hand, but your thoughts keep straying to that one moment over and over again. What will Jesper do with this information? He’s used to being a canal rat running the streets of the Barrel, where any piece of knowledge should be taken and sold to the highest bidder. There’s no doubt in your mind that he’ll tell somebody- why would he ever keep your secret?
However, he gives you no suspicious looks, and when you and your friends finally make it out of the Shadow Fold and into the dim gray sunlight of the ruins of Novokribirsk, he simply walks over to stand with his own group once again. He doesn’t say a word to Alina or Mal or anyone else.
Your stomach is still in knots over the potential of your secret being revealed, and you find that you can’t sit quietly, even when you’re exhausted from the fight on board the sand skiff. Instead, there’s a strange buzzing in your chest, as if you could run a hundred miles and never tire. It occurs to you that this might be because you finally used your Grisha abilities and didn’t keep them tied up for once. Regardless, you can’t be content with a place by Alina and Mal in the long and broken grass, so you stand up, walking to pace back and forth overlooking the ruins of the city.
To your surprise, you’re soon joined by Jesper. He walks with you for a few yards, then turns back to you. “Why do you keep the fact that you’re a Grisha a secret?” Your feet stall in place, and you quickly check around you to make sure that no one can hear the conversation. Alina and Mal are a ways away, so they probably won’t be able to tell what you’re saying, but you can never be too sure.
“It means I can stay with them. It means that my friends don’t look at me like I’m an enemy, one of the Darkling’s men. They don’t trust Heartrenders that well. I cannot have them think that of me.” Jesper nods, but doesn’t speak. You glance over at him. “Aren’t you going to do something? Make a joke about how I’m too afraid of my friends?” He shrugs. “You’re not the only one with secrets to keep.”
Before you can think more on this and what the seemingly open Jesper Fahey could possibly have to hide, he’s turning his attention back towards the ruins of Novokribirsk below you. At the sight of it, the wind drifting through clouds of smoke and dust, he whistles softly, the low note hanging in the silent air. “Are you looking for anyone down there?” You shake your head. “I have no one anywhere.” Jesper regards you for a moment longer, a strange look in his eyes, then turns and walks back to his Kerch friends without another word.
As you watch, he speaks to them in low voices. Although you cannot make out a single word, you swear that their gazes lock on you several times. Later, after everyone has had time to recover and start to think about moving forward, Jesper’s friend Kaz steps forward. “We’ll be heading back to Ketterdam soon. You should either run or find a place to hide. They’ll be looking for you soon enough.” Alina nods, giving Mal’s hand a comforting squeeze. “We plan on going to Novyi Zem.”
It hurts you a little, this quiet intimacy. They’ve clearly discussed this, although you weren’t in on their plans. You’ve known that it would be like this for a while, that the two of them would always need each other a little more than you. Truth be told, you’re largely alright with it, although it does sting a little to know that you will forever be on the outside of their happy pairing.
Kaz now turns to you. “If they’re going to Novyi Zem, where does that leave you? We have a position in our ranks, if you’re interested in taking it. You appear to have a skill set that we could use, and it would probably be best for your Sun Summoner if you split up into smaller groups.” You look between him and Jesper, who appears to be doing his best to remain nonchalant. Was this what they had been talking about- offering you a job?
Before you can talk yourself out of it, you step forward. “I’ll go with you to Ketterdam.” Alina stares at you. “Really?” You nod, clasping her hands. “I’ll miss you, Alina. You too, Mal. But he’s right- you too need your best chance at staying hidden from him if he comes looking. It’ll be safest if we split up. Besides,” you try for a laugh, “I’d probably get really bored in Novyi Zem anyways.” You might just be kidding yourself, but you swear that Jesper’s looking at you with an honest smile now.
This is how you end up boarding a ship to Kerch, how you end up saying goodbye to Alina and Mal with tearful hugs and farewell waves, how you end up staring with a smile at the cobblestoned streets and grimy alleys of Ketterdam. Jesper laughs at your awestruck expression. “It’s just the Barrel, darling, not the Grand Palace. No need to drop your jaw quite so low.” He dodges out of the way when you try to hit him, unfortunately. “Compared to the endless hills in Ravka, I’d say it’s pretty good.” If you didn’t know better, you’d swear that Jesper’s smile looks almost proud now.
Ketterdam is surprisingly good. Sure, you’re on the run for your life practically all of the time, whether it’s because of Kaz’s mad schemes or because some gang boss or another has decided that they’ve got it out for you, but you’d be lying to say that you didn’t do it all with a smile on your face. You might be risking your life all of the time, but at least you feel like you actually have a life to risk now, instead of just another place as just another tracker in the First Army.
You also spend a lot more time with Jesper. At first, you had rolled your eyes and questioned your Saints as to why they seemed determined to damn you with one of the most insufferable sharpshooters known to man, but in all honesty, he’s starting to grow on you. It’s just the way that the two of you get to have neverending competitions to see who can shoot the farthest and the best and the quickest, who can come up with the wittiest retort or steal the best object from a store in the least amount of time possible. It’s just that he seems to click with you in every way. Maybe a life as his rival was something you’ve been waiting on for a long time.
You keep waiting for the shoe to drop, for him to reveal to Kaz or Inej or any one of the numerous information seekers in the Barrel that you’re a Grisha. He never does, though. Instead, he waits for you late at night, when everyone else is asleep, and lets you practice your gifts on him. At first, you’re just monitoring his heart rate and trying to sense where he is in the room with your eyes closed, then you’re carefully adjusting his consciousness and the flow of his blood through his veins. It’s nothing major, certainly not enough to hurt him, but it’s practice nonetheless, and you always walk out of each session with a smile, skin practically glowing with exertion and the thrill of using your powers.
The first time he’d dropped by your room, offering such a thing, you’d practically laughed in his face. “Sure, you want me to Heartrend you. Aren’t you worried that I’m going to mess something up and kill you?” He’d just given you one of his textbook smirks. “If I was worried about you stopping my heart, love, it happened the first time I saw you. Plus, ‘Heartrend’ isn’t a verb.” You’d had no troubles with helping him into unconsciousness after that.
Now, when you sit across from him, both of you cross-legged on your bed with your hands on his wrist to sense his pulse, you can’t help but wonder why he’s there. Jesper, as if sensing that there’s some deliberation going on in the head of someone also trying their best not to kill him, tilts his head to the side questioningly. “What’s wrong?” You shrug. “Nothing. I just don’t know why you’re doing all of this. I mean, you could have turned me in at any point, but instead you’re here, letting me mess around with your heartbeat. Why go all this way?”
Jesper leans back against the wall, considering this. “You’re not the only one who wants to hide their Grisha heritage, Y/N. If one of us can have at least a little time to use their gifts, I’d want you to have it.” You can sense that there’s something in his words when he mentions his Grisha heritage, that even if he’s brought it up he doesn’t quite want to talk about it. So, you focus instead on the second part of what he’d said, the part about his attention to you.
“Why, though? What’s worth it about some orphan from Ravka?” He chuckles now. “Y/N, if I thought for a second you were just an orphan from Ravka, I’d pawn off my revolvers to the next person to walk through the door. Not everything has to be for an angle. Maybe I just wanted to spend time with you.” For a second, you almost think that your focus lessened, that you messed something up with your gifts. There’s no reason why his pulse would seem to jump as he said that, why his heart rate always seems to increase whenever he looks at you as he looks at you now.
You decide to take a chance. “I want to spend time with you too, Jesper. Even if I didn’t have Grisha abilities to hone.” His smile is genuine this time. “I’m glad to hear it.” Jesper’s hand slips slightly in yours, moving your fingers away from his wrist so he can link them around his. When he looks back at you, his eyes hold an unspoken question. You nod. An instant later, he’s kissing you, hand slipping from yours to guide you closer to him. You can’t seem to sense anything except an overwhelming rush that might be his heartbeat or yours or everyone in this entire Saintsforsaken city. To be honest, you’re fairly sure that you’d be fine with questioning it until the day your own pulse runs out.
