Telenet Shooting Collection
Telenet was a prolific game developer in the late 1980s and early 1990s, beginning with computers and quickly transitioning into console development. Their focus was often on quantity over quality, with their games often featuring stellar cutscene artwork and excellent music, but typically lacking when it came to the actual game. Their most well-known work is the Valis series in its many incarnations, as well as action games like El Viento and RPGs like Cosmic Fantasy and Arcus. They also published a handful of shoot-em-ups, originally published for the Genesis/Mega Drive and PC Engine, four of which are collected here on the Telenet Shooting Collection. This collection was published by Edia, owner of Telenet’s IP, and crowdfunded on the Japanese site Makuake.

They're animan-ey, totally insan-ey and have their own video gam-ey! Join me in this video as I go through two of the many Animaniacs video games out there- one for the Genesis, and one for the PS2. Does better hardware equal a better game? Well, one way to find out!

The only canonically gay video games
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Before 1994 the only games that were allowed to fuck other games were obscure bootlegs, the rest were only allowed to fuck cheating devices, which are another gender, but lo and behold comes Sonic & Knuckles!
This power bottom can lock on not only with Sonic the Hedgehog 3, but also Sonic the Hedgehog 2! Hell, it can lock on with literally every Genesis game but since they're not as into it you just get blue spheres...
This was a big deal because it's the first time a major company, SEGA, made a huge promotion about it in the homophobic '90s. Very deserving of its spot in queer history.

The Story
The story is about three personified game consoles trying to graduate from highschool.
On paper, a comedy of the SEGA consoles and games is actually a really good idea, since many people on YouTube have successful series based on classic game tropes.
But does this anime do it well? Eh... Kind of...
Some of the jokes are funny, especially the ones about retro games. But the problem is that the classic anime jokes fall flat and some of them come out as too mean spirited, especially with the treatment SEGA Saturn gets! This isn't as bad as the Squidward torture porns, but it still on those lines.
And the Sega Saturn torture just gets really predictable. They do it to DreamCast in one episode, but it ruins another joke that came before it and it just leaves a bad taste in your mouth.
The Characters
The characters of the consoles are unfortunately just moe trash! Mega Drive is the smart one, DreamCast is the cute and bubbly one and SEGA Saturn is post-movie Squidward. They should have had the consoles personalities reflect the age that they came from. Such as Mega Drive being the cool gal, Saturn being the jealous one who is often forgotten and DreamCast feel like a failure to reflect on the failure the DreamCast was to the point SEGA stopped making consoles! Does that sound like a more interesting cast than moe garbage?
None of them grow as characters and other than them being SEGA consoles, they are REALLY forgettable!
The 8-bit rabbit is a really unlikeable character, which is a shame because he is voiced by Yuji Naka!
On many Websites, other consoles are mentioned and even have voice actors listed. Not only don't they EVER speak once during the anime, nearly half of the ones listed aren't even in the anime! Sorry Tera-Drive fans! (What the hell is a Tera-drive fan?)
The Animation/Special Effects
You think at first the cheap looking models are a stylistic choice, you soon realise that the animation is actually lazy. They frequently recycle footage and in one episode during the contest, the other consoles are just cheap 2D sprites that look like they have been cut out from a pop-up book! So SEGA Master System and Game Gear fans, be ready to be pissed off!
The animation doesn't even try to make the characters fit in with the games they're in! They stand out like sore thumbs and it just takes you out of the emersion.
Final Thought
As both an anime and retro-game fan, I should have loved this anime. But it feels like the creators in this didn't even try to make it good and decided to do something decent for the ending! Which isn't even worth getting to.
It's no wonder nobody remembers this anime, heck, I didn't know about its existence till today, and I watched it all on one day because the episodes are so short!
Even if you do love the moe genre, there are so many better ones out there that have more care and time put into them. And for retro-gaming fans, the game show Go 8-bit is far more entertaining and Dorkly's animation skits are more funnier than this anime.
Just skip this anime. It's not worth sitting through, even when the episodes are only around 10 minutes long!

Mega Turrican (1994)
Sega Mega Drive / Genesis
Tumblr media
A solid run-and-gun platformer that is very contra-esque, aside from your grappling hook (to swing), and no directional shooting. Lots of challenging but easy-to-learn boss fights break up lengthy, varied stages which have plenty to explore.
I liked the gameplay in general, and it was pretty fun to learn the boss patterns. Weapons were well-balanced, and I never felt cheated. The grappling hook made this more unique as you had to swing around to scale the levels, which are not linear.
I disliked the scrolling sections (Alien Train), which gobble up your lives pretty quickly. The Alien stage was the most difficult IMO.
Beaten in around 3 hours (https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1661101096)
Rating: ★★★☆☆ 3.6 out of 5

Game 18: PICROSS S GENESIS & Master System edition (Feb 2023) 💖
Picross has been a really neat puzzle game to get into. It tickles the brain the same way Sudoku or crosswords do, but with math placement. It makes neat little shapes and drawings as you fill in the squares, and gives you a nice little sense of accomplishment when you get to see the pictures move a bit too. But mostly Picross is just a fun game that helps clear your mind, and Picross S GENESIS & Master System Edition is the best version of that fun.
I can't express just how blown away I was by the demo for this game alone. With the additional new modes like Clip Picross and Color Picross it really feels like Sega Picross just understands what makes Picross so fun, and what new ways such a mechanic can improve it's gameplay on. This game just has so many improvements to the hint systems, tutorials, and gameplay that this would make a great starting point for any puzzle fan wanting to try a Picross game. Add in the additional star system to reward veteran players for playing the game well, and new modes just caters to any puzzle fan out there.
The game is absolutely stacked with a huge amount of puzzles to chose from. Not only are the majority of these puzzles not locked by anything, but you also don't need to do them all to be reward for the work you do. This means that doing any puzzles in regular, mega, or color picross will give you a clip picross to work with. These Clip picrosses are often smaller picross puzzles that create a small picture to help an even bigger picture come to life. While regular picross is still as fun as it usually is, being able to break it up with some mega picross or color picross puzzles helps the overall game from becoming too stale. As well, the new featured color picross is perhaps this games main selling point. While most picross puzzles require you to use simple math placement to figure out where to place your next block, color picross also uses various colors to help construct your picture. Sometimes the colors can help immensely or provide to make the puzzle more challenging, but always giving you a new way to play and figure out picross. Attach to this we have a very slick interface with a lot of wonderful sound effects and a nice assortment of Sega music. Rounding everything out, each picross is entirely different through out giving you an entirely new picture aside from regular and big picrosses as they share the same gallery.
Really I couldn't ask for anything more from a picross game, and Picross S: Genesis & Master System Edition really provides for that charming pick up and play attitude like no other picross before it. While there could have been more pictures for mega picross or a larger sound track of Sega's works, there really isn't much more I could have asked for from this game. Sega picross gives far too much from it's gameplay alone, and it's pricing makes it far and above worth your time. There really isn't a better puzzle game that's under 10$ that I could think of.

Bomberman ‘94
Even with the success of Super Bomberman overseas, Hudson Soft had different plans for the next 1993 entry. Bomberman ’94 brings the series back to the PC Engine and is the first entry to (initially) release as a Japan exclusive since 3-D Bomberman. This was likely due to the fact that the PC Engine underperformed outside of Japan, though the platform would be discontinued everywhere in 1994 regardless. To better accommodate overseas markets, the game was ported to the Mega Drive as Mega Bomberman in 1994, so its Japanese exclusivity technically didn’t last long. As the final main series entry on the PC Engine, Bomberman’94 specifically picks up where Bomberman ’93 left off and refines it to a striking degree, making for a worthy sendoff for the platform.

X-Perts (1996)
In today's review, I find that levelling up an aging console might require some expertise. As I attempt a #positive review of the 1996 Mega Drive spin-off X-perts #retrogaming #sega #megadrive
Art isn’t a concept that thrives in a medium; exciting trends in one field often find themselves homage in another. Action thrillers influenced video games, for example, and these bonds will echo for countless decades. In 1995, and in further efforts to flesh out their promising fighter range, The Schrödinger ninja, Shadow, and two new faces set to undertake a daring mission, requiring the…

Sega Genesis (Nintendo Switch Online): The Bigass Review
I am currently fixated on a personal, categorical review of all available Saga Genesis games available through the NSO content that I unfortunately paid for. Gonna be a real thriller, folks. There will be seven categories: First Impression- the initial vibe check. Audiovisual- considers both quality and personal preference. Difficulty- considers ease of controls as well as enemy and terrain interaction. Originality- considers comparable content and the game’s ability to surprise the player. Story- considers the presence, detail, and continuation of storytelling elements. Enjoyment- the final vibe check. Final Average- a compiled average score. Each category will be scored in a five-level color-coded rating system: Homophobic, Bad, Average, Good, and She Ate. There are a few rules I’ll be following to allow for a fair review without palying through each game to completion.
1) Each game will be reviewed in alphabetical order, with the exception of sequels, as those will be played directly after the original title.
2) Each gameplay will be a minimum of 10 minutes to allow a fair review of games with a “Homophobic” enjoyment score, with no maximum playtime to account for games with a “She Ate” enjoyment score. The objective here is to assess vibes, not to create a playthrough reaction or comment on story progressions/finales.
3) There is no post schedule, though I anticipate at least one game review per week. The basic motivation for this review is simply fascination and free time. 4) These scores are not objective- they are absolutely based on my personal preference and taste. I think about these types of projects as “subjective/reactive” opinion pieces rather than my usual objective research. That being said, there will be a commentary section below each rating chart.
LINKS: As each review is completed, I will link those posts back to this main hub. There will be 36 total posts.
