Genuine question... Why do people act so weird whenever they compliment my name and i say "Thanks, i picked it myself"? I dont understand why peoples minds go straight to a baby picking it instead of the person changing it later in life.

I haven't seen the new Barbie movie yet, but as a lifelong movie enthusiast I'm heartwarmed by it being such an Event and by the hype it's getting, because it felt like that might become a thing of the past after the Pandemic, or something that became only reserved for the MCU

My boyfriend was laid off from his IT job this week.. no warning or anything, the company just decided that this branch wasn't making them enough money because their local clients are mostly non-profit orgs like senior services and stuff like that. So they just closed down the whole office to focus on their other locations in bigger cities.
BF is rightfully pissed off but hasn't shown up at the office to sign the paperwork and help close it up. So the company called ME as his emergency contact person, 3 times! While he has no missed calls from them--why did they call me when it seems they didn't even attempt to get ahold of him? It feels like an overstepping of boundaries tbh!
THEN! Because I didn't answer the phone! They sent police to my door to do a fucking welfare check!! Even the police were confused, but they were like sorry we were asked to come out here so we gotta do our job.
I am so royally pissed off right now
Also freaking out about how we're gonna pay the bills, because that job was our lifeline
Fortunately I talked to the people at the nearby gas station and it looks pretty hopeful that I'll be able to work there, but with my health problems I'm gonna be struggling at 20hrs a week, plus the hourly pay is half what he was making. He's applied for unemployment and is looking for other jobs as well. So we'll probably be ok in the end. But it's the not knowing that's scary :x

I'd like to remind everyone of a couple things that I was very, very painfully reminded of today.
people who work at the store are people too.
if you would like some help with something, please ask politely. do not just gesture and act like we are animals you can call over by snapping.
put carts back where they belong, not in random places in the parking lot.
do not walk in the middle of the parking lot when the sidewalk is right next to you.
don't say "lemme give you something to do" to someone, it's likely that a. they're actually already doing something and are either waiting for someone / something, or taking a break from doing something.
please don't leave big trash in your carts if you can help it.
please be patient with your cashier, chances are they might be new, or don't have the clearance to do what you'd want them to do. they're there to help you, don't be rude to them. please. most of the time, they're doing their best, I promise. that's not to say don't ask if you need something, just please be kind.
people have to live in tourist towns too.
please, please drive safely. especially in small towns.
is this gonna make people upset? sure. but the biggest message is please, please don't be rude to customer service people. especially with how difficult this summer has been heat and tourist season wise. most small town places are very, very understaffed and are doing their best.

Oof remembering retail and fast food stories is making my blood boil
Why are so many customers such absolute pricks, like what's your goddamn damage where you feel entitled to screech at teenagers and min wage workers? Don't go shopping or get food if you can't be a decent person while doing so, you can't have it both ways where you want these services done but think the people providing them don't deserve living wages or basic respect.

as of today, all of my former coworkers in the circulation department have either relocated to different branches or resigned 🤭
#mads makes a text post#can't say i'm surprised tbh#i love the staff at that location but admin treats the circ department kinda shitty ngl#like all the other circ clerks at other branches do more than the ones at the main branch (where i previously worked)#also ngl working at the main branch during its renovation kind of sucks#im so glad i got a new position at the location i would float to#it's a longer drive (only 20 minutes) but it's bearable and i like my new position!#also lol since the final clerk resigned they put up a hiring ad#ngl I’m kinda salty about that#because since the renovation started they had a hiring freeze at this location for months#and guess what - a youth services librarian actually retired in early June#if I wanted to I could have applied but they’re not putting it out until like the fall I guess#so I could have stayed at that location (no one wanted me to leave) but!#hiring freeze and ngl I wanted out of my current position#bc again - circ clerks at the main branch are treated kinda shitty and most normal responsibilities are capped#so I wasn’t going to learn or allow to do much which would have hindered future career paths#it’s fine though I like working at my current branch now#it has its ups and downs but the patron culture is so different#plus I no longer have to handle fine money which is super nice#anyway I hope my former coworker gets to do what she wants#(she’s doing further career research for what she really wants to do)#I feel bad for my former supervisors I know they must be freaking out now

The state of Utah in the United States has no citizenship requirements for marriage licenses, and Utah County is the only place there that allows international couples to register their marriages online. Since the county rolled out virtual weddings during the Covid-19 pandemic, it became a wedding haven for same-sex couples who are not able to officially marry in their own countries.
As sexual minorities in China face suppression at home, Utah County is allowing them to officially marry and celebrate their love — all for around $100. Although the marriages aren’t recognized in China, some 200 same-sex couples from mainland China and Hong Kong have gotten married via the county’s digital marriage license system since 2021.
For authorities in Utah County, the influx of international couples came as a surprise. The Utah County and Auditor’s Office moved its marriage licensing service online, as part of a digitization initiative in 2019. At the start of the pandemic, a number of couples requested Zoom ceremonies, and the county made those available as well.
The service first attracted couples in Utah, followed by people from across the U.S., and later, from all over the world. From May 1 to September 20 this year, at least 77 same-sex couples with mainland Chinese addresses have been married there, said county deputy clerk Russ Rampton, who oversees marriage licensing, to Rest of World.
Although same-sex marriage remains illegal in Hong Kong, under a different set of laws to mainland China, residents who get married in other places are able to apply for dependent visas in the city for their partners. Married gay people are also able to mark themselves as married in tax filings.
In his vow, however, [one marriage certificate applicant] Zhu said he was looking forward to getting married a second time — in China. “If one day our country allows this, I hope we could get married again in this country,” Zhu said to his husband before they kissed.
**
Marriage equality does not stop in the West.
