I don't get ideas for stuff that isn't directly related to my WIP very often, but a bandmates shakarian AU hit me out of the blue the other week.

Shepard is the lead singer (obviously) and @otemporanerys wisely suggested Garrus as the bassist.

The sheer POTENTIAL in their chemistry on stage, songs written about each other, the connection you have when you make music with someone, literal rock star Shepard owning every stage she sets foot on, Garrus going from being someone who just soaks up the light coming off her to a solo musician in his own right, making out in the back of the tour bus, UGH.

Shakarian Spy X Family AU:

 - Jane Shepard a.k.a. “Specter”, the Alliance’s most capable spy. An expert in hand-to-hand combat, infiltration and diplomacy. When the Alliance hears of a possible rising of violent anti-alien sentiments within certain groups in humanity, they dispatch her to the Citadel in order to investigate and, if  necessary, intervene to keep the peace. To do that, she’ll have to get close to a certain human businessman who resides in the Citadel’s upper wards. Only one problem: The businessman is a bit of a paranoiac and only leaves his heavily guarded apartment to visit social events at his daughter’s school. The only way to introduce herself to him for Shepard would be to have a child to enroll, or better yet, a family, as people in the upper wards are a bit traditional and a single mother might be looked down on. She rents a nice apartment and sets up her identity as Jane Shepard, renowned psychiatrist. A child’s easy enough to come by, just adopt one from the lower wards where people don’t care enough to ask questions beyond the bare minimum. A partner proves to be more difficult, as all Alliance  agents on the Citadel, male and female, are currently otherwise occupied or have to lay low.

- Jack, a.k.a. “Subject Zero”, is the little girl Shepard chooses from a skeezy orphanage somehwere in the Citadel’s lower wards. Jack used to be part of an experiment to enhance the potential of biotic children, but the project was deemed a failure and abandoned by the people in charge, leaving Jack dumped in an orpahange and forgotten about. Jack’s biotic abilities are immense, to the point they’ve given her telepathy and enable her to read the thoughts of the people around her. Her less than stellar upbringing also left her with a big attitude problem, meaning she’s very aggressive and confrontational and will throw hands if she feels threatened. She was returned to the orphanage several times, because the families who adopted her just didn’t know how to deal with a child that obviously had issues and could throw a couch with her mind. So Jack’s already pretty distrustful of adults. However, she practically imprints on Shepard the moment the woman walks in. Jack reads her mind, sees that this is a woman who has killed and will kill again and thinks “fuck yeah, this is my mom now!” Shepard has no idea Jack knows about her real job and just assumes Jack is a particularly huggy kid (ha!), so she signs the papers and now Jack’s her daughter. Now all that’s left is a partner, but where could Shepard find someone willing to immediately get married to a single parent?

- Enter Garrus Vakarian, a.k.a. “Archangel“, C-Sec desk jockey by day, assassin for the Turian Hierarchy by night. A highly competent sniper and close-range combatant, Garrus actually has a very strict moral code and only really accepted the job to support his sick mother and his younger sister Solana after his father unexpectedly died. He tries to only accept contracts for people who deserve it, like mobsters, drug dealers or traffickers. At the time Shepard moves into the Citadel, he’s in a bit of a bind because he lied to his sister (and maybe his colleagues) about having a girlfriend, so he could escape the frequent attempts at matchmaking. Now he needs someone to pose as his partner for a C-Sec party. As luck would have it, he meets a very nice human lady while getting his suit fixed, who agrees to play his girlfriend for the evening. In exchange, she wants him to play her husband, in order to get her daughter into  a prestigious school. Sounds fair, so deal. At the evening of the party, Shepard shows up quite a bit late and also introduces herself as Garrus’ wife instead of girlfriend, having mixed up their missions because she was doing spy stuff before this and maybe has a bit of a concussion from an altercation with a bad guy. Everyone is a bit surprised that Garrus’ wife is a human, apparently. But they seem happy enough together so most just let it go. After a tumultuous run-in with some “patients” of Shepard’s, Shepard decides that getting married for real might just be the perfect cover for both of them, so she proposes to Garrus, who accepts, since the way he sees it, it’s a convenient deal for both of them.

- Last but not least, Eezo, a varren originating from Thessia. Eezo was exposed to Element Zero his entire life, leading to him developing some biotic abilities. He is a lot more intelligent than normal varren, being able to understand basic language. Also, he can see the future. Jack saw him at a shelter during a walk with her parents, read all of this in his mind and spontaneously decided she wanted a pet. Shepard and Garrus were hesitant at first, but Jack and the varren seemed to really get along and it didn’t seem dangerous to her, so they eventually agreed. In a lot of ways, Eezo and Jack are the only ones who can understand each other, so they basically become inseperable from day one.

Malec as Shakarian .. I am SOLD already. I didn't know I needed this but now I need it like air? Somebody needs to write it asap (same as with the Dragon Age Malec AU? Just give me all the Malec Bioware Games AUs tbqh) Just that one Garrus' quote .. "It's much easier to see the world in black and white - I don't know what to do with grey" and the whole thing with him feeling unable to live up to his father's/society's expectations?! If that doesn't SCREAM Alec then I don't know what does .. welp

Urgh, tell me about it anon. I was talking about it yesterday, Mangus as Aria, ruling Omega with his biotic powers; Alec as Garrus Vakarian - archangel, come to clean up the scum off the space station… anyway, it’s too early for all of this..  (referring to my subtle mass effect AU hint in my gifset last night)

Never mind Dragon Age - Magnus as an apostate mage. Alec would probably be a an ex-templar like Alistair.. (ex- because I hate templars so much). The Clave would be the Chantry.  (Actually Dorian gave me a lot of Magnus feels, just for his intersectionally as a gay tevinter poc mage who has been through hell and yet is still full of love and i love him so much)

OK SO. i'm imagining this as human au (because when am I not) but it probably works as Wild West But There Are Aliens too.

i think most of the normandy crew is an outlaw gang in turn-of-the-19th-century north america a la red dead redemption 2.

anderson runs the show and shepard is his second. wrex and ashley are the muscle. liara and tali are runaways (wrex teaching them both to shoot 🥺). thane is a missionary who started out trying to convert them and then stayed for the crime. kaidan has a guitar. kasumi is with them for a while but prefers to work alone. joker is their getaway (cart)driver.

think train and stagecoach robberies, protection rackets, general thievery etc.

zaeed and aria both run (separate) rival gangs; aria has graduated from gang leader to crime lord and basically controls the nearest major town / city.

wrex disappears periodically for like MONTHS at a time. everyone is used to it and he always comes back, but no one knows where he goes because he won't tell them and no one has ever managed to follow him successfully - except shepard. turns out he's got a wife (eve! i love them 🥺) and kids. shepard doesn't tell anyone she knows about them, including wrex.

miranda is a chemist who emancipated herself from her rich dad (and found a legal loophole to get hold of a LOT of his money in the process). the gang try to steal from her once and she nearly kills them lmao

garrus is a local small town sheriff's deputy (I'm imagining this less like his c-sec days and more like his omega vigilante days) who keeps running into shepard and the gang doing crimes and never quite catching them. yes the sexual tension is scorching thank you for asking

saren is new money; he made his fortune in the oil business (by being very corrupt) and now they're trying to raise garrus's town to drill for more oil. when he meets resistance from local law enforcement he basically just sets the whole fucking town on fire in the middle of the night. garrus is the only survivour to speak of. the gang happen to be passing by; they find him injured the following morning and bring him back to camp. (they also loot the ruined town mercilessly; they're not bad people but they're also not great people)

and that's how garrus joins the gang 🥳

There's, uh, a lot going on in the WIP meme, but hs au's? (Whichever of them you care to talk about!)

OH BOY

So i made this AU (spread between multiple files because the files were so long) with @jane-shepard / @weepycat and the first thing to say about it is that it IS an on-earth modern everybody's human au so those that don't like *shoos*

But that is A Lot so here's a summary:

They meet when Garrus transfers to Shepard and the squad's school in sixth grade and they pair up for a badminton match in gym and GO AT IT and it's intense and they're both like 'huh. Competition >:)' and then Shepard basically pulls him into the squad and has him sit beside her in every class after that (the squad was an odd number so she was always sitting alone before).

They become BFFs and basically PINING also Garrus gets his scars in a house fire when he's home alone and I think after the fire his family moves and they're super close to Shepard's house so going over to watch movies or just hang out and Garrus has a car and Shepard is never allowed to drive anything and they go on a trip alone one spring break and PINING and there's only one bed so PROGRESSIVELY MORE CUDDLING EACH NIGHT/ENTWINED-NESS WHEN THEY WAKE UP and it all culminates in the LAPDANCE aka when Shepard sits on Garrus's lap when Kal drives them and Tali home because there's other stuff in the other seats and it's A Lot and once they get to Garrus's house (which is empty) they bang on the couch.

And then AUs of the AU where they're in university but didn't get together in HS and so get together other ways but in all of them they got married for benefits regardless (to be able to live off campus where they share an apartment) which they do in 'canon' too after travelling together for a gap year. Also Grunt is their dog later on I think or their adopted kid I forget.

WIP Whenever-Day

I got tagged by @squigglysquidd, haha. Here’s from chapter two of Beyond the Blue:

When he’d finished dressing, Garrus took Jane by the hand, bringing it to his mouth plates for a gentle nip. He then nodded in the direction of the large cabin that housed the Conclave. 

“Let’s go,” Jane agreed. Hand in hand, they walked down the colossal deck. It was a living garden of exotic plants; fruits, vegetables, flowers, a riot of greens, reds, and blues. He supposed it made sense that the quarians maintained floating gardens. The flotilla rarely docked on dry land and fish couldn’t always be a reliable food source. 

Stepping inside the surprisingly ventilated cabin, Garrus towered above the other occupants. He recognized Tali who was speaking animatedly with another woman toward the back,  though otherwise the brightly robed quarians were all new to him.

Okay okay okay okay listen because I was just struck by something. Have you seen the trailer for Stumptown? Bc the one I saw gave me fairly strong Shakarian AU vibes. I had to share.

i had not but i just watched two different ones and i’m not 100% sure what’s going on but i’m getting some hella chaotic garrus vibes???? like i know it said she’s an ex-marine so the first instinct is shepard as dex but also consider garrus who is adrift and A Mess post-service and shepard as the actual cop that kept appearing……..i was expecting some cop partners au from the trailers initially but this is definitely interesting too [eyes emoji]
